Chris Kjeldsen Aquatics Complex

The Chris Kjeldsen Pool has served the University of the Pacific and Stockton communities well for over 25 years. In 1995-96, under the direction of former athletic director Bob Lee, the athletic department raised funds to make the aquatics programs and facilities at Pacific among the very best in the country, with the completion of the Pacific Aquatics Center.

The pool and deck underwent a major renovation in 2008, which included the addition of spill-over gutters and a new scoreboard. Additionally, the pool was resurfaced with new siding to make it one of the faster pools in the region.

2012 Season Preview Tigers Look To Continue Their Winning Ways In 2012 Talented Returners, Exciting Newcomers Have Pacific Looking For Third-Straight 20-Win Campaign Not content to rest on its laurels following its second consecutive 20-win season, the Pacific women’s water polo program is poised to make 2012 a memorable year that further establishes the program as a fixture both nationally and in the Big West Conference. Sixth-year head coach Megan Thomson has engineered a remarkable turnaround since taking over the program in 2007. Prior to her arrival, Pacific had not had a winning season in its 11-year history. It took Thomson three years to end the streak, leading the Tigers to a Big West Conference crown in 2010 and back-toback 20-win seasons in 2010 and 2011.

“I’m very excited to see what this group can do,” noted Thomson. “I know what they’re capable of doing, and after seeing them in pre-season scrimmages, I’m confident that we’ll see some big performances from this group.”

“I think we’re going to have a very balanced offensive attack this year,” Thomson noted. “If someone is in a situation to score, they’re going to be able to put the ball away. I believe we have threats all over the pool, which is exciting.”

Pacific will be put to the test early and often thanks to a tough schedule that features match-ups with many of the nation’s top teams. The Tigers will be facing top-caliber teams like No. 2 California, No. 3 USC, and No. 5 San Jose State, among others, in order to prepare for the rigors of the Big West Conference.

Joining the Orange and Black’s returners are a number of instant-impact newcomers. The Tigers welcome nine new players to the program this year in a balanced class that will bolster Pacific’s depth across the pool. “One thing that does excite me about this team is the depth we have,” commented Thomson. “To compete at the level of the Big West, depth is absolutely crucial. I think we have some diamonds in the rough and will find that many of our newcomers will end up playing huge roles for us.”

Head Coach Megan Thomson Megan THOMSON Head Coach Sixth Season Hartwick College, ‘02 Megan Thomson enters her sixth season as the head coach of the Pacific women’s water polo team in 2012. She became the third coach in the program’s 17-year history on May 5, 2006, and has engineered an impressive rebuilding effort that saw the Tigers claim their first-ever conference title in 2010 and finish with back-to-back 20-win seasons in 2010 and 2011. Thomson led the Orange and Black to its second consecutive 20-win season in 2011, guiding Pacific to a 21-12 mark and a fifth-place finish at the Big West Tournament. The Tigers ripped off a six-game winning streak early in the year, including a sweep of the Princeton Invitational on February 12 and 13. Pacific also dominated the Lancer Invite, going undefeated in four matches over March 18 and 19. The Tigers ended the regular season winning three consecutive matches, including a 6-5 road win over conference foe UC Davis. The Big West Tournament saw Pacific defeat host UC Santa Barbara 6-4 in its final match of the year. Under Thomson’s tutelage, Dara Tawarahara earned her second All-America selection in as many seasons. Tawarahara was also a First Team All-Big West selection while Mandy King and Michele Relton earned Honorable Mention All-Big West honors. Elise Martin was selected the Big West’s Player of the Week on March 17 after recording 10 goals, seven assists, three steals, and five field blocks in four matches as part of the Aztec Invitational on March 12 and 13. Out of the pool, Tawarahara, Siobhan Larsen, Melissa Loper, Meara McCarthy, and Bethany Quertermous earned Big West All-Academic honors while Kim Kay, Allison King, Michele Relton, and Elise Martin, along with Quertermous, Larsen, Loper, Tawarahara,

McCarthy, and Loper, received Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches All-Academic recognition. Pacific’s team GPA of 3.48 was tied for the ninthbest team GPA in the nation. During Pacific’s second season of of Big West membership, Thomson led the Tigers to program milestones in wins (24) and single-season saves (290). Pacific opened the year going 3-2 at the NorCal Invite January 29 through January 31 while the Tigers’ 9-4 win over Colorado State on February 14 ignited a 13-game winning streak that saw Pacific ascend to as high as No. 16 nationally. Under Thomson’s direction, the Tigers secured the top seed at the Big West Tournament after going undefeated in the final weekend of league play. The Orange and Black upset thenNo. 10 Cal State Northridge 8-7 in sudden-victory overtime on April 17 before edging UC Santa Barbara 13-9 the following day. Pacific went 1-1 at the conference tournament, defeating UC Santa Barbara 7-5 to claim third place. Thomson coached Tawarahara to her first-ever All-America honor while Brooke Millar, Jasmine Myles, Bridget Geck, and Tawarahara earned All-Big West recognition. Pacific had a trio of Big West All-Academic selections in Courtney Boettger, Catherine Collett, and Quertermous. As a member of the newly formed Big West Conference in 2009, Thomson coached the Tigers to a 9-25 mark and a 4-3 victory over league foe UC Santa Barbara on March 29. Pacific found itself in numerous close games throughout the year as 17 of its 34 matches were decided by three goals or fewer. Thomson saw Tawarahara earn First Team All-Big West honors at the conclusion of the season, marking the first conference award for a Tiger since the 2007 campaign. Boettger, Collett, and Quertermous, along with Alexandra Kutac and Jessica Safir, were named to the Big West All-Academic Team while Quertermous, Boettger, Safir, and Kutac earned ACWPC All-Academic recognition. In its last year of Mountain Pacific Sports Federation membership, Pacific’s 2008 campaign saw the Tigers finish the year at 4-27 behind a roster that featured nine underclassmen. The Orange and Black had an impressive 19-2 win over Fresno Pacific on February 17 and were in 12 matches that were decided by three goals or fewer. Earning MPSF All-Academic honors were Kutac, Safir, Kellie Fletcher, and Virginia McConnell. Quertermous, Collett, Safir, Boettger, McCarthy, and Fletcher, along with Scarlett Eisenhauer, Taylor Sutton, Kate Casey, and Jill Hauck, were selected to the ACWPC All-Academic Team. The 2007 season marked Thomson’s first year on the deck. Inheriting a squad that was victorious in just six of its last 49 matches, Thomson reshaped the Tigers with a young group that featured seven freshmen and only one senior. Pacific finished the year with a 5-25 mark that included back-to-back wins over Occidental and Cal State Monterey Bay on March 3. Thomson coached Sarah Harris to Honorable Mention MPSF and MPSF All-Freshman Team honors. Eisenhauer, Fletcher, McConnell, and Catrina Nishimura were named to the MPSF All-Academic team. Thomson was brought to Pacific after four successful seasons as an assistant coach at Hartwick College, where she helped lead the Hawks to a pair of appearances in the NCAA Championships. She guided the team to its first-ever NCAA appearance in 2004 before repeating the feat in 2006. In her time as an assistant, Hartwick compiled a record of 112-40 and were Collegiate Water Polo Association Northern Division champions each season. The 2004 group set a school record with 33 wins. Thomson starred at Hartwick from 2001 to 2002, leading the team to a 4723 record, two CWPA Northern Division titles, two CWPA New York Region championships, and one Eastern College Athletic Conference title. She led the Hawks to a runner-up finish at the 2002 CWPA Championships, falling to Michigan 7-6 in sudden-victory overtime. Hartwick would have advanced to the NCAA Championships had they emerged victorious. Thomson was named to the ACWPC All-America Team each year and was twice recognized as the CWPA Northern Division Player of the Year. Academically, Thomson earned AWPCA All-Academic honors in both of her seasons with the Hawks. She finished her playing career with 234 points, good for eighth all-time in PACIFIC

Head Coach Megan Thomson Hartwick history. Her 182 career goals ranks fifth while her 180 drawn ejections ranks third. Hartwick named Thomson its Female Athlete of the Year in 2001 and 2002. She was inducted into the college’s Athletic Hall of Fame on October 12, 2002. A native of Wellington, New Zealand, Thomson played for her country at the 2001 FINA World Championships in Japan where she finished among the top 20 goal scorers in the tournament. She was the captain of the New Zealand Development Team in 2000 and played on her country’s Under-20 National Team from 1996 to 1999. Thomson was also the cocaptain of New Zealand’s Senior National Team at the Commonwealth Game Championships in Perth, Australia, in January 2006, finishing with a bronze medal. In 2003, she captained the national squad at the Olympic Qualification Series and was a member of the group that competed in the Olympic Qualification Tournament in Italy. Thomson earned her bachelor’s degree in business in 2002 from Hartwick. In 2008, she graduated from the NCAA Women’s Coaches. Academy. She resides in Stockton, Calif.

Emily Schmit enters her first season with the Pacific women’s water polo program in 2012 after a distinguished coaching career at the collegiate club level. Schmit comes to Pacific from De Anza College, where she served as the head coach for both the women’s and men’s squads. She took over the school’s women’s program in 2008 in its first year of competition. Schmit assumed head coaching duties over the men’s team a year later in its first season of competition. Prior to her stint at De Anza College, Schmit acted as head coach of the women’s and men’s club teams at the University of Arizona. In 2008, she coached the women’s team to a fourth-place finish at the National Collegiate Club Championships, improving upon the squad’s seventh-place finish in 2007. The women’s team also won consecutive Southwest Conferene titles during her time on the deck. On the men’s side, Schmit saw both the “A” and “B” teams finish first and second in the Southwest Conference, a feat that had not been done before. Schmit was recognized as the Southwest Conference Coach of the Year for the both the women and the men in 2007 and the women in 2008. While at Arizona, she earned her Juris Doctorate and Master of Arts degree in Women’s Studies. Schmit competed at Indiana University from 1998 to 1999. In her two seasons as a Hoosier, she saw time in 58 matches, recording eight goals, nine assists, 22 steals, and five drawn ejections. She earned her bachelor’s degree in gender studies, history, and sociology from Indiana.

HISTORY

Danielle Sartori returns for her fifth season as a volunteer assistant coach with the Pacific women’s water polo program after graduating from Pacific in 2004. A four-year letter winner for the Tigers from 2001-04, Sartori initially joined Pacific as a walk-on. She notched a pair of goals as a freshman but was held out of action during her sophomore year due to a shoulder injury. Sartori concluded her career with two years in the cage, serving as the team’s reserve goalkeeper as a junior and starter as a senior. She tallied 174 blocks during her senior campaign, including an impressive 11-save outing in the Tigers’ 8-6 loss to Arizona State on April 18. Originally from Livermore, Calif., Sartori earned her bachelor’s degree in sport sciences in 2004. She went on to earn a doctor of physical therapy at Pacific in 2006. She currently works as a physical therapist at Lodi Physical Therapy.

Joey ROSSI Team Manager Second Season Pacific, ‘10 Joey Rossi enters his second year as team manager and strength and conditioning coach with the Pacific women’s water polo program. A four-year letter winner with the Tigers’ men’s water polo team, he earned his undergraduate degree in sport pedagogy in 2011. He is currently pursuing a master’s degree in sport sciences. As a member of Pacific’s men’s water polo team, Rossi tallied career totals of 41 goals, 53 assists, and 43 steals. He appeared in 97 matches in four seasons as the Tigers made the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament three of the four years. Outside of the pool, Rossi was a two-time MPSF All-Academic selection and four-time Academic All-America honoree. Rossi prepped at Ceres High School in Ceres, Calif., where he lettered in both swimming and water polo for the Bulldogs. He owns the all-time scoring title at his high school and was a two-time Junior Olympian as well as a member of the California Central Zone team. PACIFIC

Player Profiles Kim KAY Senior • 5-10 2M Offense Cape Town, South Africa University of Cape Town Junior (2011): Kay appeared in 20 games in her first season at Pacific. She tallied five goals on 20 shots. Kay also recorded nine drawn ejections, three steals, and two field blocks. She earned Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches All-Academic honors. University of Cape Town (‘10): Kay earned a bachelor’s degree in labor, organization psychology, and human resource management from the University of Cape Town. As a member of the Tigers’ water polo team, she won the South African University Games in 2008, 2009, and 2010. Kay earned all-tournament honors each year and received the Best Attacker award in 2009. Reddam House HS (‘07): Kay graduated from Reddam House High School in Constantia, Cape Town, South Africa, where she earned four letters in water polo. She led her school to national titles in 2005, 2006, and 2007. Kay was the Western Province School Aquatics’ top goal scorer as a junior and senior. Personal: Kay was born in Cape Town, South Africa, and is the daughter of Andrew and Elizabeth Kay. She has a younger sister, Sarah, and a younger brother, Jonathan. Brittany LLOYD Senior • 5-8 Utility Orinda, Calif. Miramonte HS Junior (2011): Lloyd played in all 31 games as a junior, tallying 12 goals. She also recorded 26 steals, 14 assists, four field blocks, and four drawn ejections. Sophomore (2010): Lloyd saw time in 12 matches for the Tigers, notching eight goals on 16 shots. She also registered eight steals, two assists, and two field blocks. Freshman (2009): Lloyd appeared in nine games during her first season at Pacific, recording 22 shots. Miramonte HS (‘08): Lloyd prepped at Miramonte High School in Orinda, Calif., where she lettered in both water polo and swimming. She led her team to a 25-2 record and a runner-up finish at the North Coast Section tournament as a senior, earning her all-league honors. Lloyd recorded an impressive 58 goals that year. Maryland (2008-10): Rowe spent her freshman and sophomore seasons playing water polo for the University of Maryland. As a sophomore, she saw time in six matches, starting three. Elise MARTIN Sophomore • 5-6 Utility Calgary, Alberta, Canada William Aberhart HS Freshman (2011): Martin appeared in all 31 games in her first season at Pacific, recording 39 goals, good for third-most on the team. She also notched 35 steals, 32 assists, 22 field blocks, and six drawn ejections. Her steal, assists, and field block numbers were second-most on the team, respectively. Martin earned Big West Player of the Week honors for the week of March 16 after she led the Tigers to a 3-1 record at the Aztec Invitational in San Diego, Calif. For the tournament, she tallied 10 goals, seven assists, three steals, and five field blocks. Martin was also an Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches All-Academic honoree. International: Martin is a member of Canada’s Junior Women’s Water Polo National Team. Most recently, she was part of Canada’s team at the 2011 World University Games in Shenzen, China. Player Profiles Taylor ADAIR Freshman • 5-8 Utility Lake Forest, Calif. El Toro HS El Toro HS (‘11): Adair attended El Toro High School in Lake Forest, Calif., where she earned two letters in water polo for the Chargers. A cocaptain and All-South Coast League selection as a senior, she led her water polo team to a second-place finish in conference play and a quarterfinal berth in the CIF Tournament. She was given the Most Improved award as a junior and helped her team to a second-place finish in the Seaview League and an appearance in the CIF Tournament. Adair also earned four letters in swimming and paced her team to league championships in 2008, 2009, and 2010, and a runner-up finish in 2011. Academically, Adair was a four-year member of her school’s Honor Roll and was an Academic Torch Award recipient as a sophomore, junior, and senior. Club: Adair was a member of the Saddleback-El Toro (SET) Club, and participated in many national tournaments. As a member of SET’s U-21 team, she placed eighth at the 2011 Junior Olympics. Most recently, she led her U-18 team to a sixth-place finish in the 2011 Canadian Women’s National Tournament. Carter was named her team’s MVP that same year. In 2010, Carter was part of a U-18 squad that took third in the national tournament, as well as a U-22 team that finished fifth. She garnered the Most Improved award at the conclusion of that season. Ventura HS Ventura HS (‘11): Mann graduated from Ventura High School in Ventura, Calif., where she lettered in both water polo and swimming. She earned All-Channel League honors and was her water polo team’s captain. Mann led her squad to fourth-place league finishes as a junior and senior and a third-place finish as a sophomore. She tallied 136 career goals in her time as a Cougar. Active in her school’s student government, Mann was a senior class officer and junior class vice president. She also received the Mary Keller Munsel Service Award as a senior. Personal: Mann was born in Visalia, Calif., and is the daughter of Pennie and Roger Mann. She has three siblings, Jaclyn, Dixon, and Ben. During her free time, Mann enjoys baking, playing music, painting, photography, and playing ultimate frisbee. Saint Mary’s HS Saint Mary’s HS (‘11): Pitcock attended Saint Mary’s High School in Stockton, Calif., where she earned three letters in water polo and four letters in swimming for the Rams. She led her team to league titles each season and was an all-league pick in 2010. She was coached by former Pacific men’s water polo player Dragan Bakic, who was a fourtime All-America selection for the Tigers. Personal: Pitcock was born in San Jose, Calif., and is the daughter of Jonathan and Kimberley Pitcock. Marymount HS (‘11): Martinovic attended Marymount High School in Los Angeles, Calif., where she earned three letters in water polo and one letter in swimming. She earned Second Team All-Mission League honors as a senior, and was given the team’s Coaches’ Award after tallying 21 goals, 16 steals, 14 assists, and seven drawn ejections. In 2010, Martinovic received MVP honors and was an Honorable Mention all-league pick. In her first season of varsity play, she was recognized with the Most Improved Player award after helping her team reach the CIF Tournament for the first time in school history. Martinovic also earned numerous academic awards in her time as a Sailor, including the California Scholarship Federation Academic Achievement award. Personal: Martinovic was born in Dallas, Texas, and is the daughter of Aleksa and Vera Martinovic. She has an older sibling, Nevena. In her free time, Martinovic enjoys running, listening to music, hanging out with friends, and going to the movies. Tracy HS (‘11): Pombo attended Tracy High School in Tracy, Calif., where she earned two letters in water polo and three letters in swimming. She had a stellar senior season for the Bulldogs, tallying 56 goals, 20 assists, and 20 steals on the way to earning All-San Joaquin Athletic Association and team MVP honors. As a junior, Pombo recorded 32 goals, 13 steals, and six assists. She was recognized with all-league honors and her team’s Most Improved award. As a swimmer, Pombo was an allleague pick as a senior and her team’s MVP as a sophomore. Academically, she was a four-year member of her school’s Honor Roll and the California Scholarship Federation. She was also president of the Future Farmers of America club. Personal: Pombo was born in Fairfax, Va., and is the daughter of Richard and Annette Pombo. 2011 Season Review Tigers Claim Second Consecutive 20-Win Season In 2011 Relton sets single-season saves record, Tawarahara earns second All-America honor Coming off of one of the most successful seasons in school history, the Pacific women’s water polo team had high expectations for 2011. Those expectations were fueled with a preseason No. 18 ranking and victories in eight of its first 12 matches, including a fourgame sweep at the prestigious Princeton Invitational. The stretch included a 19-2 rout of Villanova that saw 11 different Tigers put points on the board. A home date with then-No.1 Stanford saw the Orange and Black fall 15-4 but triggered another stretch of great play as the Tigers prevailed in eight of their next 13 matches. Freshman Elise Martin received Big West Player of the Week honors following her 10-goal, seven-assist, three-steal, five-field block performance at the Aztec Invitational on March 12 and 13. Pacific also swept its second tournament of the year after going 4-0 at the Lancer Invitational the following week, putting them at 16-8 going into Big West play.

Two straight road losses to then-No. 14 UC Santa Barbara and then-No. 17 Cal State Northridge put Pacific in a rough spot in the conference standings, but a 5-3 home win over then-No. 13 Long Beach State kept their league championship hopes alive. Those hopes were dashed with a loss to then-No. 10 UC Irvine. The Orange and Black finished the regular season on a three-game winning streak including a road victory over then-No. 15 UC Davis. Senior Dara Tawarahara earned Big West Co-Player of the Week honors following her four-goal outing against the Aggies. The Big West Tournament saw the Tigers in a rematch with UC Davis in the first round, resulting in an 8-4 loss. Pacific rebounded to defeat UC Santa Barbara 6-4 the following day, giving it a fifth-place finish. The Orange and Black’s seniors keyed the victory, notching five goals, nine assists, and four field blocks as a group. All told, the Tigers finished the year at 21-12, their secondstraight 20-win season.

Tawarahara received a spot on the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches Honorable Mention team after tallying 64 goals, 26 steals, and 22 drawn ejections in 33 games. She was also named to the AllBig West First Team. She finished her Pacific career with 229 goals, good for second alltime. Senior Mandy King and freshman Michele Relton were awarded spots on the All-Big West Honorable Mention team. King, who was the 10th-leading scorer in the league, led the Tigers with 40 drawn ejections to go along with 42 goals, 32 steals, and 17 field blocks. Relton set new program records for single-season saves (332) and single-game saves (18).

Pamela A. Eibeck University President

Pamela A. Eibeck became the 24th President of University of the Pacific on July 1, 2009. She is Pacific’s sixth President since the University moved to Stockton in 1924 and the first woman to hold the office. Her Presidency follows a distinguished career as a researcher, teacher, educational reformer, and university administrator. Prior to joining Pacific, Eibeck was dean of the Edward E. Whitacre Jr. College of Engineering at Texas Tech—one of the nation’s largest engineering colleges with 4,400 students, 156 faculty and five research centers. There, she was responsible for eight academic departments, 33 degree programs and a $55 million budget. An active fundraiser, Eibeck helped build an endowment of $57 million and doubled the number of endowed chairs. Eibeck takes the helm at a University with strong enrollments and finances, and the best incoming student academic profile in its history. With a record number of applications for Fall 2009, university enrollment is expected to remain steady at around 6,250 with a 20-point jump in the average admitted freshmen SAT score to 1200. Construction continues on two major buildings: the $7.5 million Janssen-Lagorio Multipurpose Gymnasium and the $10 million John T. Chambers Technology Center, and the last fiscal year closed with a surplus for the 13th consecutive year. While spending time to get know Pacific in her first year, Eibeck has committed to building on these strengths by continuing to enhance educational quality, build national visibility, and deepen the University’s involvement in community engagement.

Founded in 1851 as the first chartered university in California, University of the Pacific continues to enjoy a reputation as one of the finest academic institutions in the West. The main Stockton campus, with its expansive lawns and brick-and-ivy architecture, much like many renowned universities in the East, is highly regarded as one of the most picturesque college campuses in the West. The only private school in the Big West Conference, Pacific offers a diversity of programs that would normally be associated with a much larger university. Personal attention and small class sizes have become Pacific trademarks and help attract students from many U.S. states and foreign countries. Pacific provides its 6,235 scholars a student-to-faculty ratio of less than 13-to-1. Pacific is comprised of 11 schools and colleges on three campuses, offering students the distinctive advantage of nearby resources. Two professional schools complement the Stockton campus: the School of Dentistry in San Francisco and the McGeorge School of Law in Sacramento. The Stockton campus features the central liberal arts division, College of the Pacific and schools of music, engineering, education, pharmacy, business & public administration, international studies, the Graduate School and University College. Pacific students are represented on many policy-making committees, and the Associated Students (ASUOP) play an active role in campus life through social and cultural programs. The Stockton metropolitan area, with a population of over 280,000, is nestled conveniently in the San Joaquin Valley between San Francisco and the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Pacific offers its students a proximity to many exciting places including Monterey/Carmel, Lake Tahoe, the northern California wine country, and Yosemite National Park. It is adjacent to over 1,000 miles of waterways, making it the largest inland seaport in the state. Eibeck received her bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees in mechanical engineering between 1979 and 1986 from Stanford University. She joined the faculty at the University of California at Berkeley, where she earned tenure and served from 1985 to 1995. In 1995, she became a professor and chair of mechanical engineering at Northern Arizona University, where she later served as director of the honors program and then vice provost for undergraduate studies. In 2004, Eibeck was named dean of the college of engineering at Texas Tech. An expert in heat transfer, Eibeck conducted experimental research related to electronics cooling and thermal tiles used by NASA on the space shuttles. Her later work focused on engineering educational reform, including early use of multimedia in the classroom, curriculum development and, most recently, ways to attract young people and women to the profession. She has authored or co-authored nearly 50 articles and papers. Eibeck became a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in 2008. She received the Distinguished Engineering Educator Award from the Society of Women Engineers in 1996 and the Boeing Outstanding Educator Award in 1999. Eibeck is married to William D. Jeffery, a law professor and a native of California. They have four children. Sons Andrew and Kevin live in the Bay Area. Daughter Katherine attends the University of Southern California. Their youngest son, Will, attends Santa Clara University.

Is Pacific a religious or church-related university? No. Pacific was founded by and is affiliated with the Methodist Church. We do have a chapel, a full-time chaplain, a number of religious-oriented clubs, and a Department of Religious Studies, but we are not a “religious” university where students are required to attend chapel or to take religion classes. Any or all of the above are available to students who are interested, but participation in such activities is completely voluntary. Is Pacific accredited? Academics are Number One at the University of the Pacific, and Pacific is proud of its student-athletes’ performances in the classroom. In addition to having some truly outstanding individual scholar-athletes, Pacific currently boasts a graduation rate of over 96 percent for all recruited student-athletes who exhaust their athletic eligibility. During the spring semester of 2011, Pacific student-athletes posted a combined grade point average of 3.0. Pacific is annually represented on Big West Academic All-Conference teams, Academic AllAmerica teams, and boasts NCAA Post-Graduate Scholars in several sports. Faculty and counseling resources help keep student-athletes at Pacific on track to graduate in four years. Located in the heart of the Pacific Intercollegiate Athletics Center, the Pacific Student-Athlete Resource Center, includes stateof-the-art computer facilities and is used exclusively by studentathletes. A special opportunity exists for student-athlete participation at Pacific with the Pacific Student-Athlete Council. The council is comprised of elected student-athlete representatives from each Division I team. Administration Vice President of External Relations & Athletics

Ted Leland Dr. Ted Leland, the Vice President for External Relations and Athletics, took over as the athletic director of Pacific Athletics on July 1, 2011. Beginning his second stint as the director, Leland will oversee Pacific Athletics for a two year period while overseeing the implementation of Pacific’s new strategic plan for Intercollegiate Athletics-a plan that he and and former athletic director Lynn King created while working together over the previous year. In addition to his duties in the athletic department, Leland will retain his status as vice president for external relations. At the end of the two-year period, Leland will resume full-time duties as vice president for External Relations and conduct a search for a new athletics director. Leland last ran Pacific’s athletic department from 1989-91 before moving on to Stanford where he was the athletic director until 2005. During his 14 years at Stanford, Dr. Ted Leland not only led the Stanford Athletic Department to unprecedented success both on and off the playing field, but earned a reputation as one of the nation’s top athletic administrators. Leland was named The Jaquish & Kenninger Director of Athletics at Stanford University on June 7, 1991, and has been the guiding force in leading an athletics program that was voted as “the most admired collegiate athletic program in the nation.” During his tenure, Stanford won the prestigious Directors’ Cup, emblematic of the top athletic program in the nation, for the last 11 years and the Cardinal won more NCAA championships than any other school in the nation. Under Leland’s stewardship, Stanford’s athletic program enjoyed tremendous success in fund raising and athletic facilities were vastly improved. From 1991-2005, Stanford won 50 national team championships and 173 conference championships, including an NCAA record six national titles in 1996-97. Cardinal teams consistently competed for the national championship in virtually every sport every year. In 2004-05 alone, Stanford had 26 programs finish in the Top 25 nationally, including 10 in the Top 5 and 16 in the Top 10. In the area of fundraising, the Athletic Department raised over $270 million in private donations, and its assets and endowments grew from $52 million to $374.9 million during Leland’s tenure. In addition, approximately $185 million in new or renovated athletic facilities were completed and funded. Leland’s peers and colleagues have honored him on several occasions. He was presented the Dick Enberg Award by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) in 2004. The award is presented to “a person whose actions and commitment have furthered the meaning and reach of the Academic All-America programs and/or student-athletes while promoting the values of education and academics.” In 2000-01, Leland was honored by NACDA (National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics) and the Street & Smith’s Sports Business Journal as the Athletic Director of the Year. The award recognized an Athletic Director for demonstration of commitment to higher education and student-athletes, continuous teamwork, loyalty and excellence, and the ability to inspire individuals or groups to higher levels of accomplishments. In 2008, he was elected into the organization’s hall of fame. Leland has served on numerous national committees throughout his career. He is currently a member of the University of the Pacific Board of Regents and the Board of Directors of Opportunities Industrialization Center West (a non-profit community-based job training center on the Menlo Park-East Palo Alto border). He has been a member of the Division I NCAA Committee on Infractions and the NACDA Executive Committee, and has served on various other Pac-10 and NCAA committees. In June of 2002, Leland was named a co-chairman of the United States Secretary of Education’s Commission on Opportunity in Athletics. The 15-member panel examined ways of strengthening enforcement of Title IX and expanding opportunities to ensure fairness for all college athletes. Leland served a two-year term as the Chairman of the NCAA Management Council. He was a member of the Management Council for eight years. After serving as Stanford’s Director of Athletics for 12 years, Leland was granted a “Special Research Leave” from his post in the spring of 2003. During an 11-week absence, Leland was a Distinguished Visiting Scholar at the Hoover Institution on campus, conducted research on a book, and wrote and delivered several speeches on national issues related to intercollegiate athletics. In addition to Stanford and Pacific, Leland was also the athletic director at Dartmouth College from 1983-89. His other career stops have included Northwestern University, where he was a Senior Associate Athletic Director from 1981-83 and the University of Houston as an Assistant Athletic Director from 197981. He was an assistant football coach and instructor of physical education at Stanford in 1978-79. Leland grew up in Northern California, graduated from Hayward High School and later attended Chabot College. He earned both his Bachelor’s (1970) and Master’s (1972) degrees from the University of the Pacific, prior to adding a Ph.D. from Stanford in 1982 in education/sports psychology. While an undergraduate at Pacific, Leland earned First Team All-PCAA football honors as a defensive end in 1969. He later coached football at Pacific, Stanford and East Tennessee State. In addition to his work in athletic administration, Leland has held the position of “adjunct professor” at Dartmouth College, Pacific and Stanford, teaching courses in Sports Psychology and the Philosophy of Sport. He is currently a Distinguished Visiting Scholar at the Hoover Institution at Stanford. Leland and his wife, Stefanie, have two children: Amanda and Bo.

Holly Trexler

In her seventh year at Pacific, Holly Trexler is the As-

sociate Director of Athletics for Student-Athlete Services and Compliance. She became Pacific’s Senior Women’s Administrator in September of 2008. Among her duties, Trexler oversees compliance, academic support, student services, the Pacific Student Athlete Council (PSAC) as well as the CHAMPS/Life Skills program. In addition, Trexler is currently serving on the NCAA Leadership Selection Committee. Before coming to Pacific, Trexler was the assistant athletic director for academic support/life skills coordinator at Quinnipiac University from 2002-05. At Quinnipiac, she monitored the academic progress and eligibility status of all student-athletes, in addition to overseeing academic programming and support services. Trexler was also responsible for the CHAMPS/Life Skills program. Prior to her time at Quinnipiac, Trexler spent the previous three years as assistant athletic director for eligibility and student services/senior woman administrator at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in Greensboro, N.C. Her duties at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference school included the monitoring of academic records and eligibility status of 300 student-athletes. She also oversaw the academic programming and support services. From 1993 to 1999, Trexler worked at the University of Kansas as a strategic learning assistant and Mentor. In her position, she developed learning strategies for at-risk student-athletes and assisted with subject matter and overall academic development. Trexler holds three degrees from the University of Kansas. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in English and African-American studies in 1995. She was awarded her Juris Doctorate from the Kansas School of Law in 1998. A year later, in 1999, she finished her master’s in education.

Tony Sandoval joined Pacific in April of 2007 as the assistant director before being promoted to the Director of Athletic Performance in October of 2007. He most recently ser ved as an assistant director of strength and conditioning at Sacramento State from January 2005 through the spring of 2007. Sandoval also earned his master’s degree in spor ts performance in 2006 at Sacramento State. While working at Sacramento State, Sandoval also worked with UCLA on a mentorship program that allowed him to travel to Los Angeles, Calif., approximately once a month to work with Bruin athletics. Sandoval earned his bachelor’s degree from Cal State San Bernardino in December of 2004 in exercise science. During his undergraduate studies, Sandoval also ser ved as the boxing coach and the boxing strength and conditioning coach for the city of Chino, Calif.

The newest addition to the athletic performance facilities is a 2,000 square foot conditioning room with plyometric flooring and 20 Schwinn Spin Bikes. “The Athletic Performance Department’s goal is to help prevent the risk of injury while at the same time improving physical and mental attributes for all our student athletes,” said director Tony Sandoval. “We feel it is very important for our student athletes to be in great shape throughout the whole year so that they can compete at the highest level possible. “The benefit that our student athletes receive from our training goes beyond the weight room or conditioning field. We stress values such as discipline, accountability, team camaraderie, and competition. These traits that we build upon in every strength and conditioning session is what gives our teams the best chance to succeed during competition and in life.”

Marcus Dorin joined the Athletic Performance staff in January 2008 as the Assistant Director of Athletic Performance and is responsible for the yearround training for nine of Pacific’s athletic teams. Before coming to Pacific, Dorin spent the previous two years as the strength and conditioning coach of Butte College’s (Chico, Calif.) football, baseball, men’s basketball and softball teams. Prior to working at Butte College Dorin served as a spring training strength and conditioning intern for the Texas Rangers. Coach Dorin served as the strength and conditioning coach for seven of Chico State University’s athletic teams while he completed his master’s degree in kinesiology. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in exercise science from Chico State University.

Athletic Training Medical care of Pacific student-athletes begins with its athletic training staff and the fully operational Joseph Spracher Athletic Training Facility. The facility features the latest in injury prevention, rehabilitation, clinical diagnosis and educational research. The athletic training facility is operated and staffed by the director of athletic training Chris Pond and assistant directors of athletic training Sam Gay and Annette Martinez. Pond, Gay and Martinez are certified athletic trainers by the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) and oversee treatment and medical attention given to all of Pacific’s intercollegiate sports. In his 21st year at Pacific, Pond is a 1988 graduate of Utah State, and spent two years at Arizona before arriving in Stockton. The athletic training facility is also the training laboratory of Pacific’s athletic training undergraduate studies program. Pacific offers athletic training as a field of study within the University’s Department of Sport Sciences. Approximately 15 students participate annually in Pacific’s student-athlete training program. The academic needs of athletic training students are supervised by Jodi Baker (ATC), director of Pacific’s Athletic Training Education Program.

Brookside Field (Field Hockey) The Pacific athletics department boasts seven facilities for its 16 Division I intercollegiate teams. All Tiger basketball and volleyball games are held in the Alex G. Spanos Center (top left), with lockerrooms located in the central athletics department.

In 2006, Pacific saw the opening of its first oncampus baseball field, Klein Family Field (bottom right). Klein Family Field is one of two on-campus facilities with stadium lights that allow for night games throughout the season. The Pacific baseball team’s home seats 2,500 and capacity grew even larger in the fall of 2008, with the addition of two new luxury boxes on the upper concourse.

Janssen-Lagorio Gymnasium (Athletics & Recreation) Chris Kjeldsen Pool Complex (Swimming & Water Polo) ly the home of Pacific football. Stagg was built in 1950 and has undergone several renovative efforts since. The Tiger swimming and water polo teams hold their contests at Chris Kjeldsen Pool, located adjacent to the athletics department. The complex also holds lockerrooms and coaches’ offices. In 2008 the pool was resurfaced with new siding to make it one of the faster pools in the Big West Conference. Pacific athletics is dedicated to providing students with top-notch facilities, and the Janssen-Lagorio Gymnasium is the newest addition to the Tigers’ facilities. The multipurpose practice facility was officially opened in December 2009.

Tiger Team Capsules Pacific picked up a conference championship in softball in 2011, the Tigers’ first-ever softball title. The Tigers garnered five conference player of the year honors while taking home 71 all-conference awads. Pacific also had one Academic All-Americans and 62 Academic All-Conference Team athletes. BASEBALL – Final Record: 17-37 (9-15 Big West Conference) Notes: • Three All-Big West honorees with sophomore Dustin Torchio earning first team honors while seniors Matt Carvutto and Brian Martin each were named to the second team. • The Tigers beat three ranked teams with victories over No. 10 Cal State Fullerton, No. 13 Cal and No. 17 UC Irvine. • Senior Brian Martin finished his career second alltime in Pacific in hits and became one of four players to reach 200 career hits, 100 career RBI and 100 runs scored as a Tiger. • Senior RHP Jake Hummel earned Big West Pitcher of the Week honors for his complete-game shutout over San Francisco, while junior OF Daniel Johnston earned BWC Player of the Week honors after hitting .538 in a three-game series against UC Davis. MEN’S BASKETBALL – Final Record: 16-15 (8-8 Big West Conference) Notes: • Pacific finished fourth in the Big West during the regular season, but fell in the first round to No. 5 seed, and eventual tournament champion, UC Santa Barbara • Senior Sam Willard and sophomore Allen Huddleston each earned All-Big West Conference honors. • Willard was named All-Big West First Team, after a senior season in which he led the Big West and was 11th in the NCAA in rebounding with 10.6 rebounds per game. • Willard became the only Tiger in program history to score 1,000 points, grab 800 rebounds and nab 80 steals.

Softball - Big West Champions WOMEN’S BASKETBALL – Final Record: 9-22 (5-11 Big West Conference) Notes: • The Tigers finished seventh in the Big West to earn a bid into the Big West Championship tournament. • Pacific advanced to the semifinals of the Big West tournament for the first time in five years after posting their first win at UC Santa Barbara in 24 seasons in the quarterfinals. • Freshmen Danielle Peacon and Gena Johnson each earned All-Big West honorable mention and All-Freshmen honors for their play. Peacon also took home all-tournament honors for her performance in the championship tournament. • On Dec. 28, the Tigers hosted No. 1 UCONN, taking on the historic Huskies in front of a record 6,150 fans at the Spanos Center. CROSS COUNTRY – Final Record: Ninth at Big West Championships Notes: • During the Big West Conference championships the entire team set their personal best times. • The team improved its overall time from the 2009 season by seven minutes and improved the average time by over two minutes. • Freshman Melissa Hopper and sophomore Jazmin Quiroz competed at the NCAA West Regionals to close out the year.

GOLF – Final Record: Second at Big West Championships Notes: • Pacific earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament making their first trip to the postseason since 2001-02. • The Tigers finished seventh of 13 teams at the San Diego Regional • As a team, Pacific took home the Pacific Invitational title with a program record -23, 827 three day total. • Senior T.J. Bordeaux won the Pacific Invitational with a program record -15, 198 total. He set the program single-round record in round 2 with a -10, 61. • Senior Alex Johnson won the Fresno State Lexus Classic in a playoff and shot a -6, 210. • Four Tigers’ earned All-Big West honors at the end of the year as T.J. Bordeaux and Alex Johnson earned first team honors while Alex Edfort and Patrick Kucich earned honorable mention honors. SOCCER – Final Record: 8-8-3 (5-3-0 Big West Conference) Notes: • Pacific played one of the toughest schedules in the nation in 2010 as they played seven matches against top-25 teams. • Finishing fourth in the conference, the Tigers made the Big West tournament for the second time in three seasons, falling in the opening round, 2-1, to UC Irvine on the road. • Five Tigers earned All-Big West Conference honors, including Freshman of the Year Brittni Beeman. Tiger Team Capsules WOMEN’S SWIMMING – Final Record: Seventh at MPSF Championships Notes: • Pacific finished seventh in the first MPSF Swimming Championships. • Jayme Swalin, Elena Walterman, MaryElla Randall and Shelby Bolin all earned All-MPSF honors in the pool. Swalin earned first team honors in the 1650 Free. • The Tigers placed five swimmers on the all-academic team at the conclusion of the season. MEN’S TENNIS – Final Record: 13-11 (3-2 Big West Conference) Notes: • The Tigers were ranked as high as No. 74 in February. • Pacific swept UC Davis as well as UC Riverside in the month of April. • Coach Redondo was selected as Coach for the USTA Northern California Team for the 38th annual Maze Cup. • Six Tigers were honored with Big West recognition and All- Conference Team selections.

Jenifer Widjaja SOFTBALL – Final Record: 37-19 (16-5 Big West Conference) 2011 Big West Champions Notes: • Pacific won its first ever Big West championship after posting a 16-5 record in conference play. • The Tigers made the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2007, earning the conference’s automatic bid while being placed in the Stanford Regional. Pacific went 0-2 at the regional falling to No. 11 Stanford (3-0) and No. 16 Nebraska (11-1). • As a team the Tigers put together a historic campaign at the plate as Pacific finished with the Big West and the program’s single-season batting record after posting a .323 average. The Tigers’ finished No. 13 nationally at the plate. • Pacific took home three major honors in the Big West as head coach Brian Kolze was named the conference’s coach of the year while sophomore Nikki Armagost was named the Player of the Year and freshman Kelsey Rodriguez was named the Freshman Player of the Year. • A Big West record seven first team all-conference slots were given to the Tigers as Nikki Armagost (pitcher & utility), Megan Hom (outfield), Nicole Matson (first base), Amy Moore (catcher), Lindsey Pierce (outfield) and Kelsey Rodriguez (designated player). • Three Tigers earned all-region honors as Nikki Armagost, Megan Hom and Kelsey Rodriguez all earned second team honors. Rodriguez became just the third freshman in program history to earn the award.

WOMEN’S TENNIS – Final Record: 9-12 (4-4 Big West Conference) Notes: • The Tigers swept the Cal State Fullerton Titans and the UC Riverside Highlanders. • Susan Te clinched the match to advance the Tigers to the semifinal round of the Big West Championships after winning her nearly five hour long singles match against UCSB product Kiersten Meehan. • Pacific advanced to the semifinal round at the Big West Championships at Indian Wells, California. • Two Tigers were selected as Big West Athletes of the week (Kateryna Nezhura and Jenifer Widjaja), one was competitor of the month for the month of April (Susan Te), and one was Big West Tennis Player of the Year (Jenifer Widjaja). MEN’S VOLLEYBALL – Final Record: 11-19 (5-17 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) Notes: • Pacific achieved its first national ranking since 2007 and finished the season ranked No. 14 in the Association (AVCA) poll. • At the end of the year two Tigers earned All-MPSF honors as freshman Javier Caceres and sophomore Taylor Hughes each earned honorable mention honors as voted upon by coaches.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL – Final Record: 19-11 (9-7 Big West Conference) Notes: • Head Coach Greg Gibbons took over the helm of the program as the seventh head coach in program history on Jan. 28, 2010. • Pacific finished fifth in the Big West after going 9-7 in conference games. • The Tigers biggest win of the season came against No. 24 Arizona when Pacific knocked off the Wildcats 3-1 at the Wolf Pack Invitational. • Pacific won the 32nd Annual Bankers Classic at home in September. Sophomore Hannah Clancy was named the tournament’s MVP. • Senior Svenja Engelhardt capped a phenomenal career with her first-ever All-Region selection, First Team All-Big West honors and finished 16th in the NCAA in kills per game. • Junior Samantha Misa and freshman Jennifer Sanders also garnered all-conference recognition at the end of the year for the Tigers. MEN’S WATER POLO – Final Record: 17-11 (4-4 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) Notes: • Pacific’s kicked off the 2010 season receiving national attention when they swept the competition at the Triton Invitational, which included wins over No. 6 LMU and No. 11 UC San Diego. • During MPSF Conference play the Tigers finished the season with a 4-4 record that included a 10-9 upset over No. 3 Stanford. • The Tigers ended the season 17-11 (4-4 MPSF) and finished seventh at the MPSF Tournament. • Three players earned all-america honors at the end of the year as Goran Tomasevic earned his second consecutive award while Balazs Erdlyi and Alex Malkis made their first appearance on the team. WOMEN’S WATER POLO – Final Record: 21-12 (2-3 Big West Conference) Notes: • Pacific finished fifth at the Big West championships after finishing the regular season four th in the conference standings. • The Tigers picked up their second-straight 20+ win season after finishing just two wins shy of their program record set last season. • Three Tigers earned All-Big West honors at the end of the year with Dara Tawarahara picking up Pacific’s only first team award. Mandy King and Michele Relton each earned honorable mention honors. • For the second consecutive season Dara Tawarahara was named an Honorable Mention All-American at the end of the season.

Credentials All credential requests should be made at least one week prior to the contest being covered. Credentials will be left at Kjeldsen Pool’s spectator entrance.

Photographers

All photographers must wear assigned passes in plain sight at all times. While photographers are allowed on the pool deck, they must refrain from interfering with the officials and teams.

Interview Policy

The Pacific athletic media relations office requests that all student-athlete and coach interviews be arranged through the media relations staff. 24-hour advanced notice is appreciated. Coaches’ and student-athletes’ home and cell phone numbers will not be released.
