Editor’s Message:

Peas In Their Pods Staff

Were you aware that a child is abducted every 40 seconds in this country? Moreover, did you know that over 40% of these children are African American? If not, you are not alone because few people are aware of this epidemic. The truth is that African American children receive limited media coverage when they go missing. Sadly, without this exposure it is less likely that they will be safely found. The staff at Peas In Their Pods works diligently to spread awareness about this issue by alerting media outlets as needed when African American children are missing or abducted. The media play a critical role in getting news and information out to the public, maybe in the future the role of reporting will include the safety of our children by alerting the public when one of our children are in danger, especially our African American Children, the response time ; immediate. Our mission is to bring awareness to our communities the plight of these children, and to make them a national priority. Peas In Their Pods are concerned about all our children, the organization strives to bring awareness to any child missing, no matter, race color. The commitment is to keep the public on alert and aware. There are many organizations across this country whose missions are to provide resources to families in helping to build stronger and healthier communities. Community based organizations are key factors in developing opportunities that will help our children advance to higher levels of achievement, without these additional support systems our children and families would lack the most.

PARENTING CORNER African American Parents...Are We Part Of The Problem? January 12th was Phylicia Barnes’ 17th birthday. It’s a day when she should have been planning a party, eating cake, and opening presents. However, there were no celebrations. Instead, her family grieves because she disappeared several weeks ago without a trace. No, she did not run away as the police initially suspected. Anyone will tell you that Phylicia is an overachieving young woman and not a troubled teen with a history of hard partying. In fact, she’s the All American Girl Next Door:with a megawatt smile. This straight “A” and college bound student vanished on December 28, 2010 while visiting family members in Baltimore. As would be expected, her parents are devastated. It’s easy to draw comparisons between her story and that of Natalee Holloway. Both of them are pretty, smart, and were visiting an unfamiliar place when they disappeared. However, this is as far as the similarities go because although Natalee received around-the-clock coverage, Phylicia’s coverage has been slim by comparison. That’s right, no initial Amber Alert, no news conference, and no 24-hr coverage by CNN. The evening news teams are not camped outside her parents’ homes, and her story has not made the cover of People Magazine or Newsweek. So why is Phylicia’s image not plastered everywhere we look? Is it because she’s Black?” Many are crying foul that a teen with such a stellar track record was all but shunned by popular media in the early and critical days of her disappearance. Instead, stories like Kaylee Anthony, Zahra Baker, Haleigh Cummings have consumed most of the airwaves. Don’t get me wrong, they deserve every second of the coverage that they have receive. But why can’t all children/ missing people be given the same attention regardless of race. The answer is simple, black children are lesser valued. Whether they are poor and under privileged, or a super star student like Phylicia, Black kids don’t appeal to the larger public like a White child does. I doubt that this is a newsflash for anyone. We know the problem, but I want to focus on the solution. So here’s where I flip it on you! How can we expect others to care more about our kids than we as people of color do? Let me ask you this! Do you know more about the cast of The Real Housewives of Atlanta or what’s going on in Hollywood than you do the names of missing Black kids. Like, do you know what plastic surgery Nene had, who Kim’s baby daddy is, and where Diddy spent the holidays, but don’t know if there are missing African American kids in your town??? Hmmm....You might be part of the problem. But here’s how to be part of the solution:learn their names and stories. You would be surprised to see how many children of color there are that are currently listed as missing from your state:most without an Amber Alert. Next, is to share this knowledge with everyone you know. There is so much that the African American community can do to help children like Phylicia and the countless others. Of course, we need to continue to demand that our missing children of color be represented in the news because they, too, are beautiful, valuable, loved, and missed. However, we need to do our part as well! We can’t expect others to care about our missing children if we don’t even care enough to know learn their names. It’s our community. They are our children. Let’s make them a priority:starting today. PLEASE..... If you know anything about Phylicia’s case, please call the tipline at 855-223-0033. AND...if you know anything about any missing child....call the authorities. It's EVERYONE'S job to save our children. “We are all longing to go home to some place we have never been — a place half-remembered and halfenvisioned we can only catch glimpses of from time to time. Community. Somewhere, there are people to whom we can speak with passion without having the words catch in our throats. Somewhere a circle of hands will open to receive us, eyes will light up as we enter, voices will celebrate with us whenever we come into our own power. Community means strength that joins our strength to do the work that needs to be done. Arms to hold us when”

DEVAN MARC BLACKWELL / BUILD TO BE Author. Filmmaker. Motivator. Visionary. Devan Marc Blackwell could list many titles already in his career. But educator is the one that he is most proud of. An educator in New Jersey’s urban school districts since 2002, his personal mission has always been to assist young people reach their highest potential. For his efforts in youth advocacy, Devan has earned recognition from The National Campaign for Tolerance. For his contribution to education, Devan was named Governor’s Teacher of the Year 2009-10, and honored by The State of New Jersey’s Department of Education. As the CEO of Build To Be, LLC, Devan creates educational materials, which promote the personal development of young people. Build To Be 101, the company's motivational workbook for teens, will be released in March. Devan has given keynote addresses for educators, and presented school assemblies and motivational speaking engagements to his target audience, delivering the message that every person is capable of reaching their highest potential in life. As an author of young adult novels, Devan has found another way to speak to and inspire his audience. His co-authored novel Blood Is Thicker (Scholastic Books) from the wildly popular Bluford High series has earned great reviews. Before those accolades, Devan, like many youth in the world today, was at-risk. In his own words, the educator says: "Growing up, I dealt with many adolescent struggles. I was the target of constant bullying. A speech impediment prevented me from expressing myself verbally. For a long time, I thought those struggles defined who I was and what I was capable of becoming in life. Believing this, I spent many years lost, feeling hopeless about what the future would bring. I was fortunate enough to survive those years, many times with the help of a teacher who was there at the right time with the right words. When I became a teacher myself, I sought to create opportunities that would develop feelings of self-worth in the students I taught. That would become my mission." He continues: "Drawing on the methods I used to overcome my own struggles, in 2003, I created Build To Be 101 as a lifeline for those in need of help. It is a roadmap for those in search of direction. It is the positive affirmation that all young people need, but many never receive. A feeling of self-worth is essential for a productive and meaningful life. It is an honor to have so many people join me in this life- changing learning experience. " Please visit www.buildtobe.com The workbook, titled Build To Be 101, will be released this March

Love Letter To My Daughter!

I Know, JaJa I know painfully well the sacrifices you make of our sharing more time together in your most important years. Know the time I take from you, I spend to fulfill “my calling” to build better communities for you and all children. I know you are a gift my God gave to me so that I am always sustained in my passion and drive to help create the kind of world you should live in.

Our goal is to establish a youth movement that benefits from strength in numbers and realizes political clout. By building youth movements in various parts of the country; especially concentrated urban markets, we will create a stronger support system for our youth and our communities.

I know you’re too young to now understand the sad truth that too many children are unjustly going down rather than just growing up in a society seemingly more intent in turning them into prisoners and prostitutes rather than positive, productive people.

Together, we will determine how to most effectively help today’s teens by arriving at ways to establish greater levels of community and youth activism. And in this progress, we will ensure our younger generation has more academic achievements and professional successes.

I know that only by taking matters into my own heart and hands to reinforce in our young generation the values of living, loving and learning, can I hope to create the future you and all children deserve.

Always swayed by a deep love for his beautiful people and a deeper love for all children, Lee decided to walk away from a lucrative career and take “a long leap of faith” to start his own Black Youth education and empowerment enterprise, UniTee Design, Inc.

I know sometimes you “slow my roll”, but know you fill my soul like nothing I have ever known or will ever know. I know how happy I am to have the most brilliant daughter and beautiful blessing this old man will ever hold. I know every time you look at me, your eyes see the work I do is my greatest wish and gift for you.

The vision behind UniTee Design is to develop and deliver programs and products that inspire children to “believe, achieve and succeed.”

Activating communities of youth resources, consistently and creatively connecting them to our youth, and leveraging the power of collaboration so we reinforce in our young generation the values of living, loving and learning.

Middle Township Dance/Step Team “Giving back to the community has always been a dream of mine.” As a child, Thea Crawley grew up singing in an interdenominational choir enjoying the various backgrounds and cultures who joined together as one. Here, Thea appreciated the many adults who provided their guidance and shared their time to help enhance the lives of the young adults of her community. As a teenager, Thea was well-rounded, while working hard academically, participating in athletics, as well as gaining an appreciation for the arts. This time however, the art of dance had an even greater impact on her. During these years, she was a member of Umoja Kuumba Dance Troupe under the direction of Muriel and Reggie Anderson. Until this day, the dedication of these wonderful people is invaluable as they are role models who developed up and coming role models, such as Thea. “The cycle of giving one’s time and support is critical to the success of our young people.” believes Ms. Crawley.

Presently, Thea is employed by the Middle Township School District whereby she has the opportunity to give back through a Dance/Step team. High energy practices are held twice a week in the school gymnasium in a year long effort to prepare for an annual Spring Performance. This is a great opportunity for young men and women who may otherwise not be able to afford the high costs of a dance school. Approaching their 17th year, the previous 11 shows have been advised by Thea Crawley along with one other talented colleagues. A great importance is placed on boosting the self esteem of the children and providing a positive social outlet for them. It’s not solely about dance; it’s also about teaching the children to be productive, kind citizens. For example, the team visits area nursing homes to brighten the days of the elderly and visits schools to showcase their talents and bring smiles and knowledge to many children. In addition, students who possess leadership qualities are given the chance to shine as they are able to choreograph routines as well as coordinate costumes and lighting for their annual performance. Above all, everyone involved has a great time! “Sharing my passion for music and dance while serving my community is a double blessing.” Dance Step Team (Middle school 6-8 and the High school 9-12) Mrs. Andrea Davis, Ms. Thea Crawley, Ms. Kimberly Shelton The Middle Township Dance Step Team offers an opportunity for members to learn a variety of dance and step routines. We offer instruction techniques in the areas of Hip Hop, Jazz, Tap, Modern, Lyrical and Worship dancing. In addition, we also teach rhythm and step movements. The team meets Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5 – 7 pm at the Middle School. We travel and perform at area high schools with United Young Generation during Black History Month as well as perform as special guests at the Friday Night Live Talent Show in January. Our main event of the year is producing and performing a dance recital for family and friends at the Middle Township Performing Arts Center in April. Everyone is welcome to participate. There are no auditions or try-outs. We encourage you to come out and be part of the fun.

Letter To My Son! Dear Dezmen, Let me start off by saying that I LOVE YOU, and no matter what happens in our lives, I will always be there for you. As of this day, February 3, 2011, I only have you, but if I choose assist in making more, I will love them just the same!! I am proud to be your father and I believe you’re going to be something special because when I was a young boy, a doctor told me that I might never have any children. You are my gift from God. “Thank You Heavenly Father” I am sorry I put your mom through a lot of heart-ache while she was carrying you, it wasn’t all me, but I didn’t help things. But now that is the past and nothing about it can be changed. All I can do now is to try and help make your today and tomorrow better. No, I’m not happy about the visitation rights to see you for only two days, every other weekend and I realize that sometimes more time passes in-between our visits; but I fought for years to have some sort of influence in your life and pray that I made the most of it for the little time we had. I can understand if you might be confused or maybe even upset because I wasn’t in the house with you and your mom to witness every little thing you did, but please don’t ever think or feel like I have abandoned you! I can only imagine that as you got older and started to form the idea of what a family-unit should look like, you might have pictured it with some kids, a Mom and a dad, all there, living together. At least I imagined it was that way when I was younger, But Son, sometimes that’s just not how things end up. Some might have you believe that I chose to be with another woman and her kids over being with you? NON-SENSE!! It was an adult choice that needed to be made, in hopes that you wouldn’t grow up, messed-up, because of what you might have seen happening had me and your mom stayed together. Sometimes adults can grow apart; it’s not your fault. WE still love you. As for children of these women- I might have treated them as if they were your blood brothers and sisters and yes, I know that they were not mine! But I treated them how I would want another man to treat you if he should live in the house with you and your mom; but that’s a decision I make for you, not against you. There’s an invisible force

called Karma and simply put it means- what goes around comes around; you get back what you give out. But if think you’re being mistreated, I’m always on speed dial, anytime! Nothing could ever replace you, you’re my first born. But Son, just because I wasn’t in the house, “DO NOT” use that as an excuse or a choice to be a POOP-BUTT!!! You’d better RESPECT your mom regardless!! Let me explain what it means to have choices. A Choice can give you many options or paths you could follow and the way that you decide to take, good or bad, can affect you for a lot longer than it took you to make those choices. Choices can give you freedom and can take it away - if you make good choices everyday, even while you are young, you will find yourself in a position to do what you want to and when you want to; and as long as your choices are legal and healthy, I all am for it. Now the word freedom means many things to many people but it can mean an even greater deal to someone who made bad choices and lost their freedom. As a teen and in those young twenty’s, you will be faced with some tough choices that if you choose wrong, they could make the rest of your life miserable; choices about going to school; choices about doing drugs; choices about who your friends; and choices about choosing to work hard or steal? You going to act and think as if you are grown and know the right choice to make but you won’t. Learn to listen and follow the warnings of “old folks.” We didn’t get old being dummies! Son I pray that I am here when ever you need advice or have a pitfall, but if I am not be around, “Just Think!!” Think about the path to the end result of a choice before decide to do anything. Your choice will show your maturity and growth to becoming a grownup. There are so many things that I want for you, but this is your life. I am living mine and I have to allow you to do the same. Just as a warning , “I’m still going to tell you when you’re doing something stupid, just know that I will NOT ALLOW YOU TO FAIL, it’s not an option or even up for discussion. I’m going to do all I can to help you succeed in what ever you choose to do with your 12

life. I just hope that you make good choices about what you want to be and how you are going to get there. It’s not going to be easy; in fact it’s not supposed to be easy.

There was no disposable income for anything else or decent savings accounts because responsible decisions were not made when an individual received what I call... a "financial blessing." When a financial blessing was received, it would get blown on material items, entertainment, fancy restaurants, etc. instead of being put aside in a savings. Now, I'm not saying that it's not ok to splurge every once in a while, but you have to be responsible as well. If you put aside a little today, it can take care of you alot in the future! After you take the time to write down your parent's belief regarding money and success, then write down your beliefs. Is it the same or opposite? Sometimes, you are able to identify habits that your parents had by seeing the way they are living today.

If life was fair, or if it were easy, everyone would have it, and forever. So just be prepared to work hard for the rest of your life and remember, no one is going to give you anything. If they do, you had better ask yourself, what do they want in return? Success is not only money, but Yes its good if you can make a lot of it. Your knowledge and skill that you acquire in your mind can make you even richer because no one can tax you on what you now and they can’t steal it away. The money is in the books too and so that means almost everything you will need to have for a good life is educating yourself and learning. You are the spark to my engine and you keep me wanting to be better. Your daddy loves you from now, since yesterday and forever. Think son. Listen and Learn

Their actions from the past resulted in what you are seeing in the way they are living today. Actually, some may be able to get their answers right away by seeing this because they know that they do not want to turn out to be or to live the way they are seeing their parents live today. They begin to take the necessary actions to break the cycle they may have identified. It's amazing how the stories and experiences of not only our parents, but our ancestors can actually determine our beliefs that create how we think and feel. These experiences can be passed down many generations and unless one steps up to break the cycle, it can continue on from generation to generation. Every one of us are made up of DNA and you have to stop and ask yourself, "What's in my DNA?".

Love Always, Your Daddy (Monte Howell)

What's In Your DNA By Shyra Smith Some of us have a lot of new positive thoughts hidden away in our subconscious mind and don't allow them to come out. Many belief systems are limited and are handed down through our DNA. Stop and think for a minute. Are there any unresolved issues that your parents and you are dealing with right now? What struggles are affecting you right now? Think about where your parents might have failed in their lives? You might want to make some notes about your findings on the patterns you are identifying.

Of course, you can get the physical inheritance of hair color, mannerisms, build of body or even the way we walk. But you can also inherit emotional tendencies and from this can develop negative behaviours. There may be someone in your family who dealt with trauma in their life, alcoholism, depression or irresponsible behaviors on a regular basis. Becoming aware is the most important step as it allows you to begin working on and not continuing it. If you are carrying negative tendencies and have identified the characteristics, it's not too late to change. Start now on working on being the one in your family who breaks the cycle!

For example, if your parents struggled with financial responsiblities, question them and make a list on everything regarding their beliefs as it pertains to money and success. One of the items that I've found is that at one point in time, there was an era that I call the "Survival Era". This was the time when folks believed in just settling and doing what it took to "just get by".

When The Molester Is Someone You Know% Recognizing Red Flags

By Pattie Fitzgerald, founder Safely Ever After, Inc. Several months ago, a popular teacher in a Santa Monica, Calif. middle school was convicted of molesting several students, charges that stemmed from repeated incidents occurring over the past 10 years:. during school hours. If that isn’t enough to make your blood boil, consider this: when several of the victims first came forward a few years ago, their disclosures to school administrators and even some parents were dismissed as “misunderstandings”. A few parents went so far as to insist the students were lying. After all, “Mr. F.” was a “really nice guy”. He was always volunteering to stay late with students, willing to drive kids home, spend time with a student over the weekend, more than happy to lavish extra attention on the kids who looked like they needed a little extra TLC, even buying expensive gifts for some of his “special students.” Exactly. “Mr. F.” was a classic, textbook case of a molester using his “grooming” techniques, allowing him to victimize students practically in front of everyone’s noses. The worst part is that this teacher used his position of authority to victimize children for years, knowing that his nice guy persona would enable him to get away it. And it worked, for a long time: until one victim’s parents took matters seriously and went straight to the police. Many parents have a difficult time understanding how this possibly happened. In fact, it wasn’t until there was some very strong and undisputable evidence, including video of certain incidents, that parents finally had to acknowledge the truth. It's very upsetting to think that someone you've trusted could do something as disturbing as molesting a child. When the accused happens to be a well-respected or popular authority figure, it's very common to see community members react with disbelief and denial. Often you'll hear comments like: "it can't be true, he was such a nice guy, he never tried anything with my child." How does this happen? Sex offenders are experts at grooming parents and kids into thinking they're the pillar of the community, or the nicest guy on the block. They have to appear this way – or they’d never get away with their heinous crimes. In fact, experts constantly warn parents: “Don’t expect obvious signs in a molester. They don’t look like the boogeyman.” Child molesters and sex offenders will patiently use their cunning charm for weeks or months at a time in order to manipulate their victim before even attempting to strike. Equally important to note: molesters don’t necessarily molest every single child them come in contact with. In the case of Mr. F., he knew exactly which students were more vulnerable and less likely to tell. He knew which students he could groom and which students he should leave alone. He knew that by befriending certain administrators, parents and students, he could solidify his position as the “super-teacher” so that if a child did disclose, they wouldn’t be believed. And: that’s exactly what happened. So, how can we protect our kids? By paying attention to the clues and cues of those adults who interact with them on a regular basis. Be mindful of any adult who seems “too good to be true” – often volunteering to “go the extra mile” or suggesting lots of one-on-one or “alone” time with your child. There are often warning signs and red flags when a molester is grooming a child. The problem is, many times parents ignore these signs because they’re being “groomed” as well. 16

Fact #1: 90% of childhood sexual abuse takes place with someone the child knows, not by a stranger. Fact #2: Over 80% of sexual abuse occurs in “one-adult/ one child” situations or environments. Fact #3: The most vulnerable age range for childhood sexual abuse is between the ages of 9 and 13. Unfortunately, this is when parents tend to back off the “safety” dialog – assuming their kids know it all by now. Establish good communication skills with your child as they venture into their middle school and high school years. Stay involved with their lives. Know who they’re spending time with, including teachers, sport coaches, and even family friends or relatives who seem to always have a reason or excuse why they need to spend “alonetime” with your child that excludes you. Most importantly LISTEN to your child if they tell you someone makes them feel uncomfortable, and learn how to recognize the warning signs that someone may be interested in targeting your child. We can stop a molester’s grooming process before he takes it further and actually victimizes a child. Red Flags • Someone who repeatedly tries to arrange one-on-one, alone time with a child. • Someone who lavishes an extraordinary amount of attention or praise on a particular child. • Someone who often gives extravagant gifts or treats to one child for no apparent reason. • Someone who prefers to spend most of their free time with children and seems to have no interest in ageappropriate relationships or friendships with other adults or colleagues. • Someone who frequently offers to “help out”; i.e. babysitting for free, providing transportation, or suggests taking your child on an overnight trip without their parents • Someone who uses “guilt tactics” when you insist on setting boundaries or limits to their relationship with your child. • Someone who often seems “too good to be true”. Someone who is more interested in your child than you are What to tell your kids: • No one, especially another adult, has the right to touch you in any way that makes you feel uncomfortable or weird. This includes uncomfortable hugs, tickles, wrestling, or any other physical attention. • Be careful around any adult who wants to make you their “special girlfriend/boyfriend” and tells you to keep it a secret. • Sometimes people may seem nice at first, and later ask you to do something you don't want to do. • It's okay to say NO, even to an adult or authority figure who gives you an "uh-oh" feeling. • It's not your fault if someone tries to touch you inappropriately. • Tell a parent or another trusted adult if you feel bad. • If you can't tell your parent, find someone else to help you -- maybe the parent of a close friend or a guidance counselor. Keep telling until you get help. All kids are special and have the right to be safe. For more information visit: www.safelyeverafter.com

Greetings! Here we are again, blessed to see another February. This is when everyone is showing their significant other how much they love and cherish them. It's also a great time for us to reflect on how much God must love us. He gives us so much mercy and grace, even when we know we don't deserve it. Let's take the time this month to really focus on loving others. It doesn't take any effort to give a smile, share a hug, and even say a kind word to someone everyday. If you claim to love the Lord, then loving others should not be a chore, but it should be something that you look forward to doing out of habit on a daily basis. It will make you feel good to know that you brightened up someone's day. Have a blessed February and remember I love you!

SHRIMP AVOCADO SALAD 24 large Prawns/Shrimp 2 Avocados sliced 2 Tablespoons chopped chives 6 leaves of Boston or Butter Lettuce Dressing: 1 cup of Mayonnaise (homemade or Hellmans is best) 2 tablespoons lemon juice 1 small fresh red chili, finely chopped 1 clove of minced garlic (Note: Sometimes I use just hot red pepper flakes and sometimes I roast a fresh red pepper, finely chop and add to the dressing along with the hot red pepper flakes) Peel and devein shrimp, leaving on tail shell. Cook. Cool and refrigerate. Make dressing by mixing all of the ingredients together. To serve, place one leaf of lettuce on each plate. Place the shrimp on plate and place one slice of avocado between each shrimp. Drizzle with dressing and sprinkle with chopped chives.

LEMON CHICKEN 8 boneless chicken breasts 1/2 cup cornflour 3 tablespoons water 4 egg yolks salt pepper 6 green onions Lemon Sauce 1/2 cup lemon juice 2 chicken stock cubes 2 tablespoons honey 2 1/2 tablespoons brown sugar 1 teaspoon grated ginger 1 3/4 cups water Note: I replaced the cubes and water with homemade chicken broth. And I reduced the honey and the brown sugar so that the sauce was just subtlety sweet. For the Sauce Combine lemon juice, crumbled stock cubes, cornflour, honey, brown sugar, ginger and water in saucepan and stir. Lower low heat until sauce boils and thickens. For the chicken Pound the chicken breasts out lightly. Put cornflour into bowl, gradually add water and light beaten egg yolks, add salt, pepper and mix well. Dip chicken breast into this batter, drain well. Put a few pieces of chicken into deep hot oil and fry until lightly golden and cooked through. Drain on paper towels and keep warm while cooking remaining chicken. To serve, slice chicken into three or four pieces each and arrange on serving plate. Cover with hot sauce and sprinkle with chopped green onions. 20

Dyci Manns Founder/Executive Director of MODEL26. Prior to founding the organization, Dyci volunteered and studied in Belmopan and San Antonio, Belize, where she was first exposed to international poverty and education issues. She also interned at Fundación Leer, the national literacy foundation in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 2009. In 2010, she spent a month in Finland as the U.S. delegation leader to a CISV International summer camp where she worked with leaders from 11 other countries to develop activities about sustainable development, human rights, conflict resolution, and diversity for children.

recognize education as a human right. Consequently, they see no need to provide a free, public education system, much less one of good quality. On the other end of the spectrum, there are countries like U.S., arguably the most powerful and influential nation in the world, which has a staggering child poverty rate of 20.7 percent. According to Census data released in 2010, in our country alone, 1.4 million children fell into poverty in last year. Imagine what these numbers look like in developing countries.

Her semester spent in Washington, DC as a Progress 2050 intern at the Center for American Progress inspired her to restructure Bookbags With the Basics and create MODEL26. Dyci’s first columns about education policies that could positively affect communities of color were published in 2010 by the Center. Dyci will be graduating from the University of Georgia in May and intends to pursue her Master’s degree in public administration with a concentration in nonprofit management in the fall.

With all the talk about Millennium Development Goals and fighting poverty, young people have become increasingly more excited to join the fight. There are many organizations that encourage young people to volunteer their time, energy, and even money to provide aid to children that live in poverty-stricken areas around the world. There are young people that have been inspired to build schools for children in poverty-stricken areas and collect money for health centers in these areas. While these are noble ventures, they only mask the underlying issues of poverty.

“(1) Everyone has the right to education. Education shall be free, at least in the elementary and fundamental stages. Elementary education shall be compulsory. Technical and professional education shall be made generally available and higher education shall be equally accessible to all on the basis of merit. (2) Education shall be directed to the full development of the human personality and to the strengthening of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. It shall promote understanding, tolerance and friendship among all nations, racial or religious groups, and shall further the activities of the United Nations for the maintenance of peace.” Article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

MODEL26 seeks to take aid one step further by educating young people about the root of the poverty they want to eradicate (ethnic and religious tensions, corruption, lack of infrastructure, lack of educational opportunities, etc). Through our Serve, Take Action, Reform (S.T.A.R) model, we provide opportunities for students to provide direct aid to poverty stricken areas through school supply drives and volunteer opportunities.

Although education is a fundamental right clearly outlined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, there are countries, including UN member states, which do not

Through strategic partnerships with international aid organizations, we will send campus leaders to poverty22

stricken areas around the world, giving them physical exposure to the problems and the communities they will be working to help. Summer conferences and leadership institutes for dedicated students will feature keynote speakers such as policy experts, economists, and NGO directors as well as hands-on workshops to expose students to the ways that policy and non-profits can achieve permanent change in the world.

Mission To develop diverse leaders capable of creating viable solutions to the pressing issues of poverty and the blatant disparities in access to quality education and resources facing our global community, thus creating lasting change in society. We will do this by: ● Providing financial assistance to low-income students, therefore ensuring their ability to fulfill intern obligations. ● Recruiting students from diverse ethnic, racial, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds. ● Providing financial and logistical assistance for shorttem volunteer opportunities abroad. ● Exposing students to global and domestic issues through on-campus events. ● Providing domestic service opportunities for students.

These conferences, internship experiences, and service projects will create globally aware leaders and motivate students to pursue careers in public service or policy, thus tackling the causes of poverty instead of continually putting a band-aid over a bleeding wound. In this Prospectus you will find detailed information about our programs and services, goals and mission, and our vision and purpose. If you are a student, I hope that this Prospectus will answer most, if not all, of your questions about how you can get involved, as well as motivate you to take action. If you have the opportunity to participate in one of our programs, I hope that it opens your eyes and your mind to the possibilities and potential you have to change the world.

How Do You Wake Up The "Entire" AfricanAmerican Community To The Epidemic Of Child Abuse? (By Simply Telling Your Story.)

One Voice / One Sound Since September 2004, One Voice / One Sound has led the way in building Child Abuse Awareness by maximizing the "Online" exposure of Child Abuse Cases, and providing the education / information needed in the detection and prevention of Child Abuse, while inspiring hope in everyone involved in the effort to stop the abuse and neglect of our nations' children.

After reading through the material on our Website, and listening to the Local News on a daily basis, you will more than likely agree that the most important issue that we need to address today is Child Abuse. We have now reached an extremely critical stage in our ongoing, lifelong project where we are aiming to collect over Fifty Million (50,000,000) Messages, before we can move on to the next stage. These Messages - which we are striving to collect by the end of 2015, will assure us that Fifty Million Hearts, Eyes and Ears are watching out and listening in lieu of this Epidemic of Child Abuse, for the safety of our young African-American Children. With your help, we can do this.

Working with the bare essentials, we provide leadership to promote and implement Child Abuse Prevention efforts at both the National and Local levels. With the help of our website visitors, children are being valued, families are being strengthened and communities are engaging world wide. We are an original, positive information-only website that strives to teach the Detection and Prevention of Child Abuse, by communicating in the stream of the Metropolitan Area. We simply cannot stand injustice in any form ... especially towards our AfricanAmerican Children.

Give us the Honor of having your Message on our Guestbook in Support of our Fight against the Child Abuse by clicking the link below, or you can simply send us a message. In return, we will display your words of support for all to read. I, as a Child Abuse Survivor - along with the children who manage to survive this Epidemic will never be able to thank you enough. WWW.CJ-BROOKS.COM

Children make good targets for Predators, Molesters, Abusers, Kidnappers etc., because they are so innocent and have no power to fight back. On the same note, too many people misunderstand" the purpose of Child Abuse Prevention. Many children are dying. Responsibility for these cases of Child Abuse, Child Neglect and Deaths belongs to all of us. This is a matter of conscience and here at One Voice / One Sound, we cannot and will not close our eyes in the face of this Epidemic, fully knowing what is happening to Children everywhere and knowing it will continue to happen.

Justice for children whose parents are in prison Dr. Howard Zehr , Professor of Restorative Justice, Eastern Mennonite University Widely known as “the grandfather of restorative justice,” Zehr began as a practitioner and theorist in restorative justice in the late 1970s at the foundational stage of the field. Zehr continues in this third decade to deepen the principles of restorative justice and grow its practice worldwide. He has led hundreds of events in some 25 countries and 35 states, including trainings and consultations on restorative justice, victim-offender conferencing, judicial reform, and other criminal justice matters. His impact has been especially significant in the United States, Brazil, Japan, Jamaica, Northern Ireland, Britain, the Ukraine, and New Zealand, a country that has restructured its juvenile justice system into a family-focused, restorative approach.

Three million children in the United States are estimated to have one or both parents in prison. Here is some information about these children:

• • • • • • •

1 in 15 African American children has a parent in prison. For white children the figure is 1 in 110. About half of parents in prison have never had a personal visit from their children. Half of children with an incarcerated mother live with their grandmother. Children of prisoners are 5 times more likely to go to prison themselves than other children. Common reactions include feelings of guilt, shame and loss; fear of abandonment and loss of support; anxiety; attention disorders; traumatic stress and even post-traumatic stress disorder. Longer-term results can include maturation regression as well as reduced ability to cope with stress and trauma. The associated stress and trauma often results in both short and long term mental health, behavioral and educational issues.

The impact of prisons on families has been called the collateral damage of crime and of our justice policies. Nell Bernstein, in her important book, All Alone in the World, states it eloquently: “These children have committed no crime, but the price they are forced to pay is steep. They forfeit, too, much of what matters to them: their homes, their safety, their public status and private self-image, their primary source of comfort and affection. Their lives are profoundly affected .” What Will Happen to Me? is intended to bring attention to these children. Rather than speak for them, Lorraine Stutzman Amstutz and I wanted to provide an opportunity for them to present themselves through their portraits and words. The book is also designed for those who care for these children: grandparents, teachers, social workers. Using a restorative justice framework, it concludes with an essay on the justice needs of these children. The appendix includes suggested resources and the Bill of Rights for Children of the Incarcerated. Eastern Mennonite University 1200 Park Rd. He Saw The Best In Me... He saw the best in me...who am I referring to is probably something that many are asking. I am talking about God our Father, the one who knew us before we were formed in our mother's wombs. There is no perfect person that has graced this temporary home that we call earth, but Jesus. Out of the innocence that we came from while children, we have all gone through things that I'm sure we are not all proud of...I know that I have. I always had such high standards set for myself, I even laid out my plan of life when I was merely 9 years of age. I can remember telling my grandparents that I was going to finish high school, go on to college, then on to medical school to work towards becoming an obstetrician because I loved babies and wanted to be the assistance that brought them into the world, all while still being a gospel singer like Vanessa Bell Armstrong (since I had the opportunity to sing with her at the private school I attended just a few weeks before). I also said that I would have my career in place, then go on to get married, and have 4 kids...2 boys and 2 girls. I even told my grandparents how my wedding would be, from everyone that would be in it down to what my dress would look like. Now didn't I plan that out down to the last detail, even saying where we would live and what my husband would be like and the job he would have. Not at one time did I ever think that life would be nothing like I laid out to my grandparents. I did indeed finish high school, but didn't finish quite on my own. I finished having my first child 4 months before my graduation. I did indeed go on to college, but had my second child before completing my first year. Some may be saying, wow, what were you thinking as that was something that I was saying to myself. After my first year I would drop out of college because I was a mother who had to take care of my little family. Two years later I would give birth to another child who was definitely not expected and no where near planned, but I would take it all in stride and do what I had always done which was to take care of business. Through all of the hardships that I endured I would be left alone to raise three children on my own, telling God that this is no where near how I planned this out. I would go on to experience many heartaches and endure many storms, but God kept me. Even when I walked away from Him and became the prodical daughter, He watched over me, keeping me. When I made my mistakes, imprisoning myself physically, mentally, and emotionally, God kept me...and each time that He revealed Himself to me, I wondered why considering I didn't maintain my focus, this was nothing like my plan of life that I made all those years ago. Today, I am walking in His glory, still growing in Him. I got the husband that was planned for me by God my Father and the father in my children's lives that He saw fit. I went back to college getting first my cosmetology license then on to my Associates and Bachelor's in Business, and now into my Master's in "Criminal Justice"...huh...that wasn't what I said when I was 9, but what He had planned for me was what He knew best as what I needed and where He wanted me to work for Him. I did go on to record music, but have been the Vanessa Bell Armstrong in the church and not necessarily on the record deal. I am still judged by people daily, something that on some days bothers me, but on others allows me to bask in His glory because He still walks with me. Through all of my failed attempts at keeping my plan as I had laid out to my grandparents, even looking at my situations and wondering how could I have gotten so far off track, I have had to stop and think, I didn't get off track, He allowed it all, allowed it all so that I could grow in Him. He allowed it so that I would have the experience to do His will. He allowed it so that I could be a living testimony, so that through His anointing I would stand and deliver the plan that He laid out and not my own. Through it all, when everyone saw the worst in me, saw how far off that I was from my plan, saw only the bad situations and my faults...He saw something different. He didn't see all of those things, He saw me as His child, through his chastising of me, He still showed me mercy, still allowed me to bask in His presence...He Saw The Best In Me. Much Love and Many Blessing, Paula Whitebear-Burton 32
