Editor’s Message Were you aware that a child is abducted every 40 seconds in this country? Moreover, did you know that over 40% of these children are African American? If not, you are not alone because few people are aware of this epidemic. The truth is that African American children receive limited media coverage when they go missing. Sadly, without this exposure it is less likely that they will be safely found. The staff at Peas In Their Pods works diligently to spread awareness about this issue by alerting media outlets as needed when African American children are missing or abducted. Our mission is to bring awareness to our communities the plight of these children, and to make them a national priority. Peas In Their Pods are concerned about all our children, the organization strives to bring awareness to any child missing, no matter, race color. The commitment is to keep the public on alert and aware. There are many organizations across this country with missions are to provide resources to families in helping to building stronger and healthier children. Community based organizations are key factors in developing opportunities that will help our children advance to higher levels of achievement, without these additional support systems our children and families would lack the most. It still takes a village‌!!! Sincerely, Denise Bethune, Editor-In-ChiefWhitesboro, New Jersey www.peasintheirpods.com hfmbc@hotmail.com 2

SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY - Sharon Fox A personal chef, cooking instructor, and the writer and publisher of "Comfort Food for the Mind, Body, and Soul", an inspirational cookbook that has taken her almost 3 years to complete. This isn't your ordinary cookbook. Inside, Sharon shares not only recipes from her own kitchen, but many inspiring words of faith, testimonies, and words of encouragement. It's almost as if she is sitting at your kitchen table speaking with you as she shares her testimonies and teaches you how to create wonderful dishes.

SEASONED BAR NUTS 18 ounces (2-1/4 cups) assorted unsalted nuts 1 tablespoon butter, melted 1/2 teaspoon cayenne 2 teaspoons sea salt 2 teaspoons brown sugar 2 tablespoons fresh rosemary, coarsely chopped Preheat oven to 350 F. Spread nuts on a baking sheet and toast in the oven until they are lightly browned, about 10 minutes. In a large bowl, combine the melted butter, cayenne, sea salt, brown sugar, and rosemary. Thoroughly combine toasted nuts with the spiced butter and serve warm.

TORTILLA SOUP 4 corn tortillas 1 tablespoon vegetable oil (plus more for frying the tortillas) 1 small onion, chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 14.5 ounce can diced tomatoes 4 cups chicken stock salt and pepper, to taste small bunch cilantro, chopped Monterrey Jack cheese, grated avocado, cubed 22

Slice tortillas into 1-inch wide strips. Fry in vegetable oil until crisp, and drain on paper towelling. In soup pot, heat 1 tablespoon oil. Add onion and garlic and cook until onions are translucent, stirring constantly, for about 3-4 minutes. Add tomatoes and chicken stock and simmer 10 minutes until soup is slightly reduced. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Add chopped cilantro, reserving small bit to garnish soup. Place fried tortilla strips in bottom of serving bowls. Place small mound of grated cheese on strips, and ladle soup into bowls. Sprinkle with reserved chopped cilantro and garnish with cubes of avocado. Serves 4

CHICKEN PICCATA One of my favorite after-work meals is chicken piccata. It's so quick to make, I can have the entire meal on the table in about 20 minutes. Seriously. Put a pot of water on to boil for the pasta. Heat up 2 tablespoons of butter and 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a skillet. Pound out the boneless, skinless chicken breasts to an even thickness. (I place the chicken breast in a large Ziploc and pound away.) Put some flour seasoned with a little salt & pepper in a dish, and dredge the chicken in the flour. Place the dredged chicken in the skillet, squeezing 1/2 a lemon over all the chicken. When the first side has browned, turn the chicken over to brown the other side, squeezing the other 1/2 of the lemon over the browned chicken. (At some point here, put the pasta in the boiling water and cook until al dente.) When the chicken has finished browning on both sides, remove to platter and keep warm. Add approximately 1/2 cup of white wine and let reduce by half. Add 2 tablespoons of capers. Spoon sauce over chicken and drained pasta. As a side, I minced a clove of garlic and sauteed in olive oil, adding grape tomatoes, cooking until they start to pop. To serve, garnish with chopped fresh basil. Dinner is done!!

The abduction is of a child age 17 years or younger

The parent must have contacted law enforcement to report child missing.

A RILYA Alert may also be issued if the child is classified as a runaway by the police. The law-enforcement agency believes the child is in imminent danger of serious bodily injury or death.

All children of color meeting the criteria for the Amber Alert will also receive the RILYA Alert If these criteria are met, alert information is assembled for public distribution. This information may include descriptions and pictures of the missing child, the suspected abductor, and a suspected vehicle along with any other information available and valuable to identifying the child and suspect. *The staff at Peas In Their Pods respectfully requests that once a child is found that any organization posting information remove their pictures from their sites.

Foundation is an interfaith organization whose main focus is to build up our communities spiritually. We hope to give our community the tools to be able to constantly rebuild and renew their inner-selves. We believe the spirit drives the physical being, thusly, if we build positive spirits, we become postive people contributing to our local communties as well as the broader society in such a manner that induces caring, sharing, peace, social change, success and the like.
