A NOTE FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT & CEO

Ozarks Food Harvest Board of Directors

Officers

This past year was a challenge for everyone. As the COVID-19 pandemic continued to affect our day to day lives, we watched many of our neighbors struggle. They faced financial hardships beyond their control. Many turned to food pantries and feeding sites for the very first time. And families facing food insecurity became even more vulnerable.

As a food bank, we are well-positioned to face unexpected challenges and respond to sharp increases in demand. But we did not do this alone. It is the strength and ability of our network – and caring supporters like you – that helped us provide so many individuals with something to eat.

Every single gift to Ozarks Food Harvest makes a difference in the life of someone struggling with hunger. Your donations help Sylvia, a recipient of a Mobile Food Pantry distribution. She said, "The Food Bank has been a big blessing for us. We've never had a year as rough as this, and [this] meant we had fresh food. Thank you for everything.”

Your compassion and sustained generosity helped Ozarks Food Harvest and our network of 270 hunger-relief organizations provide a record-breaking 23 million meals. We are deeply honored to have served the Ozarks during such a difficult time. Alongside many of our neighbors, we know that the road ahead may be a struggle. Some families will be counting on us for a very long time, and we are ready to provide the support they need. We will be here to not only provide food, but provide hope. We will emerge from this crisis stronger and even better positioned to meet the evolving needs of our community. Thank you for your support of our mission to end hunger and your empathy for neighbors in need of hunger-relief. It is because of your trust and generosity that we can continue to Transform Hunger into Hope. With gratitude,

IT'S A RECORD-BREAKING
a network of more than 270 food pantries and meal programs, Ozarks Food Harvest helped provide a record-breaking 23 million meals to hundreds of thousands of people in need last year. Ozarks Food Harvest adapted to a new level of need—with agencies serving more people than before COVID-19—to safely and efficiently deliver food to families coping with the pandemic’s economic fallout. Across the network, processes were reinvented, including no—or low—contact operations, touchless drive-thru distributions, and pre-sorted food boxes, to meet the surge in demand.

OZARKS FOOD HARVEST’S RESPONSE TO COVID-19

July 1, 2020–June 30, 2021

The COVID-19 pandemic affected us all. So many of our neighbors in the Ozarks faced difficult challenges. People were out of work. Children needed food while they learned virtually. Seniors were stuck at home with nothing to eat. And many families needed help putting food on the table. The Food Bank reinvented processes, increased drive-through distributions, hired temporary workers and purchased food items to meet the surge in demand. In addition to providing a record-breaking 23 million meals, Ozarks Food Harvest:

• Purchased $3.6 million worth of food to ensure hunger-relief partners could continue to meet the increased need.

• Helped 64,000 people acquire food assistance for the very first time.

• Distributed more than 1 million meals through new partnerships and Mobile Food Pantry distributions.

• Received nearly 27,000 hours of help from the Missouri National Guard and volunteers to sort food and pack meal boxes.

• Connected more than 1,200 people with government benefits they qualified for. This SNAP outreach contributed 1.3 million meals, bringing an additional $5.6 million in local economic impact to the Ozarks.

The pandemic has proven to be an enduring crisis that we will continue to recover from for years to come, but within the hardship and loss, we have found hope for the days ahead. Thank you for standing by us throughout these challenging times.

RETAIL PICK-UP PROGRAM

Ozarks Food Harvest leads the way for Feeding America food banks when it comes to its Retail Pick-Up Program. We were one of the first food banks in the U.S. to establish a program of this kind, serving as a pilot food bank for Walmart. The program partners with retailers to rescue food that is no longer sellable, but does remain safe for consumption.

FOOD & FUND DRIVES

In FY 2021, nearly 200 local partners helped provide more than 993,000 meals through food drives, fundraisers and cause marketing campaigns.

“In
nursing, we learned that food, water and shelter are basic human needs. I know there are those in the Ozarks who have had struggles with meeting those needs. Harvesting at the garden is a good way to give fresh produce to those less fortunate.”

“When my husband and I retired, we thought we would be fine just drawing our social security. Not true. We were very naive and material bills started piling up. Money issues got to be a real challenge. I can't express enough to Ozarks Food Harvest and how grateful we are for the food. It's so appreciated.”
