INSPIRING AN IRISH ATTITUDE
e’re going to let you in on a secret: Dublin’s roots aren’t really Irish. The story begins in 1802, when Peter and Benjamin Sells of Pennsylvania purchased a beautiful slice of land upon the banks of the Scioto River (where Historic Dublin now stands)—including 400 acres for their brother, John.
W
Within a few years, John Sells and his wife came to claim the land. Sells and an Irish gentleman, John Shields, began to survey lots for the town in 1810. Legend has it that John Sells gave the honor of naming the town to Shields—who was reminded of his birthplace, Dublin, Ireland. Dublin was incorporated as a village in 1881 and became a city in 1987. Today, our city boasts a residential base of nearly 41,000. The ambiance of that original village is evident in Historic Dublin’s charming examples of early 19th-century architecture. And, yes, visitors will find plenty of hints of Ireland. From green fire hydrants, quaint pubs and rolling rock walls to one of the largest Irish Festivals in the nation—there is no doubt that Irish is an attitude here.
Living the Irish Attitude e love people who live the Irish attitude. The Dublin Convention & Visitors Bureau’s annual awards program recognizes local businesses that embrace Dublin’s destination brand and slogan: “Dublin, Ohio— Irish is an Attitude!” These visitor-friendly establishments and organizations help us to deliver a better visitor experience. Congratulations to the recipients of the 2010 “Living the Irish Attitude Award.”
W • Dublin Community Recreation Center – Offering Irish dance programming, the Abbey Theater and meeting rooms with Irish names. • Dublin Arts Council – Recently opened the new Celtic Corner in the DAC Gift shop, featuring Irish-themed gifts and artwork by local artisans. · Java Jan Coffee – Featuring Irish & Dublin inspired offerings including Highlander Grog coffee, Irish cream syrup and Dublin notecards.
