President’s Welcome Welcome! It is my pleasure to bring you the Jaguar Land Rover Varsity Games, centred around the historic home of Oxford sport, Iffley Road. The original purpose of the Varsity Games was to bring together some of the indoor and smaller sports and generate support for their Varsity matches by hosting them all in one place on the same weekend. 42 years on, the Games has gone from strength to strength and in 2014 we will see nineteen different sports take place over two weekends in Oxford. Between them these events will see over 50 Varsity Matches and 400 competitors as well as countless officials, coaches and supporters. The Varsity Match is the pinnacle of the sporting year for both the Oxford and Cambridge sides. Students have trained extremely hard all year for their Varsity Matches where they will be in action representing their universities, and every match is sure to be of a high standard and closely fought.

PARKING

Parking for teams travelling in cars and minibuses is available at the Iffley Road Sports Complex. Spectators are asked to note that parking at the Complex, and in the centre of Oxford is extremely limited and is likely to fill up very quickly. The nearest Pay and Display Car Parks are situated on Marston Road OX3 0EE, St Clements OX4 1AB, Union Street OX4 1JP, Meadow Lane OX4 4BJ – ask car parking stewards for directions.

CATERING

AFTERPARTY

The official Varsity Games afterparty is going to be held on Saturday 1st March in Junction. Advance ticket will be available to purchase from the Sports Federation in the week preceding the Games. Tickets are priced at £5 and include queue jump until 10.30pm.

PLAYER OF THE MATCH PRIZE DRAW

Teams captains from both sides are asked to submit the name and contact email address for their player of the match to the Sports Fed following their event. All players of the match will be entered into a prize draw to win a Land Rover driving experience for two.

ALCOHOL AND SMOKING

Players and supporters are asked to note that both alcohol and glass bottles are not permitted within the Sports Complex. Smoking is not permitted on site.

OXFORD WOMEN IN SPORT EVENT

On Saturday 8th March the Women’s Rugby Club has teamed up with Atalanta’s, Vincent’s, OUSU and the Sports Federation to celebrate the Journey of Oxford Women in Sport. It just so happens that the 8th is International Women’s Day also! The event will be held in a marquee on the Rugby Grounds at Iffley. A drinks reception with high profile speakers will be followed by the official Varsity Games afterparty in the marquee starting at 9pm. Tickets cost £20 and are available from the Sports Federation office.

The Sports Complex kindly asks anyone who wishes to take photos of the Varsity Games events to obtain a permit from the reception desk. We have a number of photographers who will be taking photos of the fixtures throughout both weekends. Photographs will be made available on the Oxford University Sport Facebook page after the event.

If you didn’t know, netball is a fast-moving and high-scoring 7-a-side game where a goal equals one point. Alternating centre passes begin each play with clean interceptions and handling errors meaning a change of possession. Being in the same BUCS league, the Roos and the Jays have met twice already this season, resulting in some of the more dramatic fixtures of the year and two narrow wins for Oxford; Cambridge will certainly be looking to fight back. The Blues have not yet had the chance to size each other up on court – Cambridge currently sit high in their Midlands league after impressive victories against the likes of Warwick 2nds (58-28). However, Oxford have justified their place in the league above with a series of fierce performances, beating Nottingham 1sts to progress to the next stage of the National BUCS Trophy. Can Oxford repeat the double win of Varsity 2013 or will there be a fearsome Cambridge comeback?

After a slow start, Oxford Blues have found their feet in the Premier South and are 2nd (as of January end), whereas Cambridge Blues had a strong start with back to back wins at the beginning of the season, but have slowed down in the Midlands Division – 1A now lying in 5th. But all current league form is irrelevant when the teams meet for Varsity. Oxford have won the majority of the ties in recent years, but are reeling from Varsity 2013 where, at home, Cambridge took the gauntlet. 2014 should be victory and redemption for Oxford with home-town advantage and better pedigree , but could be another triumph for a Cambridge side riding on a high from a year ago. Currently the Oxford team are placed 3rd in the BUCS Premier South division, whilst Cambridge are 5th in the Midlands 1A league. WATCH OUT FOR … New Oxford players Ryan Webb and Alex Baron have used their athleticism and defensive intensity to cause teams trouble all year. The team is also filled with sharpshooters. For the Women’s match watch for Julie Fricke and Carrie Ryan to run the plays and put up some big points, but also watch for the all-round team intensity. 5

SWIMMING SATURDAY 1ST MARCH 2014 ROSENBLATT POOL Swimming Varsity Match 12.45 Team captains Men’s Kouji Urata Women’s Naomi Vides 2013 score Oxford 117 – Cambridge 63 In the swimming varsity match each of the 18 events (9 women’s, 9 men’s events) has two swimmers from each team. Points are allocated according to position with 4 points for 1st place, 3 for 2nd and so on. The 4 relays are scored with 7 points for 1st, 3 for 2nd and have in previous years proved to be decisive in securing a win. Individuals may swim maximum of 3 events of which up to 2 can be individual swims. Oxford and Cambridge came 3rd and 4th respectively at the Southern qualifier for BUCS in November 2013, separated only by 2 points. At BUCS short course national championship Oxford presented both a larger and a stronger team, with several Oxford swimmers qualifying for the finals. In the new year the two teams met again, this time in Spain each for their own intense training camp in warmer weather.

Both clubs have since taken part in their own local meets, with Oxford posting some impressive results and Cambridge’s swims looking a little less convincing. However the stage of training has to be taken into account. In the end, it is the performance on Varsity day that counts, so varsity 2014 promises to be an exciting match.

In 2013, Oxford Water Polo suffered a tough defeat at Cambridge Parkside Pool. Since then, we have comprehensively reorganised, restructured and improved every element of the Oxford University men’s and women’s water polo teams.

So far, this strategy has proved fruitful, with both teams competing strongly in their BUCS groups and pushing to qualify for the semi-finals. Now, both teams have undergone a gruelling training programme, and have pulled out all the stops to claim victory at this year’s Varsity match. This year also sees the first time the 2nds Varsity match has been played in Oxford, following its inauguration in Cambridge. We want victory, and we want you there! WATCH OUT FOR … Rhushub Bidd – last year’s U-polo top scorer has gone from strength to strength in his 2nd year, and will be sure to provide a stern test to the Cambridge net. Expect backhands. Louis von Guionneau – after a year spent honing his water polo skills in China, men’s vice-captain Louis is back in action for the dark blues – Cambridge beware!

The Swifts and Kingfishers have both secured some impressive wins in BUCS this season including, for the Swifts, an 11-10 win against the Kingfishers last term. With a more recent 8-8 draw between them, this is shaping up to be a tight and exciting match. Both Men’s Blues teams are well established in their respective BUCS leagues. Having drawn 6-6 a few weeks ago, both are sure to be coming out fighting. The Iroquois, meanwhile, are hoping to build on last year’s win against the Cambridge Eagles. Oxford’s Mixed squad has been growing fast this year. After some excellent victories against teams such as Southampton, Surrey and Brighton, they are hoping to learn from last year’s loss and overcome a strong and experienced Cambridge side. 8

A korfball team consists of 4 boys and 4 girls. Split into 2 ‘divisions’ of 2 boys + 2 girls, one division attacks whilst the other defends. Every two goals they swap. The basic rules are no running with the ball (2 steps allowed), no shooting if tightly marked by an opponent and no contact. Boys can only mark boys and girls can only mark girls. Players work together to create space for shooting opportunities. Cambridge have been in good form this year, winning most of their Cambridgeshire Division 2 games and taking 3rd place in the qualifiers for Student Nationals next weekend, bolstered by the arrival England U-19 captain Ollie Bell. Oxford, with only one surviving 1st team player from last year, have found things tougher going on Oxfordshire Division 1. The new team has made great strides as the season has progressed, securing 8th in national qualifiers. Historically, Cambridge has the slight edge, winnng Varsity 13 times to Oxford’s 10 (4 draws). However Oxford have appeared in the final of student nationals 6 times to Cambridge’s 4. A half-blue sport, Oxford and Cambridge are always keen to welcome new players, to play against other universities and local leagues, in what is widely regarded as a very friendly and jovial sport.

Oxford and Cambridge have been meeting each other in the Badminton Varsity Match for over 60 years with the last three victories going to the Dark Blues. A resounding overall win last year could be attributed to the outstanding performance from both the Womens 1sts and 2nds as they failed to lose a single of their 30 matches. The one blotch on the scorecard came from the Mens 2nds who lost for the second year on the trot, they will be hopping to reverse this trend this year and claim back the one trophy currently in Cambridge’s possession. The Varsity Match always bringsout the best badminton of the year in our players with tension high and true team moral apparent to any spectator looking down on the sports hall from the viewing gallery.

Cambridge Men’s 1sts are the favourites going into the match, having won 10-0 four years on the trot. Oxford Men’s 1st are hoping to win a single match, which will result in us gaining the moral victory. The Oxford Women’s team are looking to bounce back from last year’s defeat after beating Cambridge two years ago. We had got the better of them three years in a row from 2010–2012, but Cambridge have resorted to dirty underhand tactics, stealing our best player to do a PhD, who led them to success last year against a weakened Oxford side. Oxford Men’s 2nd are looking to build on their 2nd team’s 5-5 draw from last year. In what was a tense affair, Cambridge 2nds managed to clinch the draw 3-2 in the doubles. This year Oxford want blood, and are willing to pull out all the stops to gain victory! WATCH OUT FOR … Kris Hammarback, ex Warwick 1sts captain, whose movement around the table and strength on both wins could cause Cambridge some real difficulties. If Michael Peterer gets all his shots on, he will be unstoppable. He smashes everything and often produces wonder shots. Definitely one to watch. Adam Stanway may well produce confusion and victories against Cambridge. His spin serves and huge backhand (but don’t tell the Cambridge team that!) are deadly when they come off. Paul Erdunast may well sneak a win or two if his wacky serves are able to make up for his mid-point game – this has happened a surprising number of times in BUCS, with a win record of 14 in 16 matches. 13

Each match is a showcase in its own right, featuring its own trophy and being fenced in the exciting 135 hit relay format which sees the teams contest 27 consecutive individual bouts and the final team score is the cumulative total of these bouts. Further, with the teams evenly balanced, competitive contests are guaranteed. The Men’s Blues have one win a-piece in BUCS this year, whilst Cambridge have edged out two close Women’s Blues matches. Similar close contests are guaranteed with the Second’s matches: the women have won one match apiece, but the Oxford Men’s Seconds have had an undefeated season in BUCS. Points are scored by clean strikes (with force) to the scoring area of the face or torso. WATCH OUT FOR … Conor Husbands (SEH), OUABC’s answer to Willie Pep, a remarkably unorthodox boxer whose speed and movement are infuriatingly effective. After putting in what can only be described as a ‘shut up’ performance on a mow-hawked giant at welterweight last year, Conor stopping his next man inside the distance would be a sensible flutter. 15

2013 scores Blues 1-1 (lost 4-2 on penalties) Furies 1-0 loss After both teams faced relegation last year, the confidence in both teams is sky high as they are both pushing for the title in respective BUCs leagues. Oxford, having started off the season with a couple of narrow losses, are now growing stronger than ever, with a winning streak that takes them back to mid November. The light Blue side are also looking very strong, having won all but one of their BUCs matches to nil, to date. The Oxford squad includes 6 new players, including two undergraduate freshers, who have all become fully integrated with the rest of the team. Having beaten local rivals Oxford Brookes in a smashing victory of 6-0 in mid January, the girls have experience of playing on the wide pitch at Iffley in front of a big home crowd. With Cambridge stealing the victory with a frightfully close game which lead to penalties the previous year, both sides will be up for ending their successful seasons with the Varsity cup to their name. WATCH OUT FOR … Katharine Nutman (Blues), centre midfield, has represented England at U15s, U17s and U19s. In her first year of a 2-year Masters having completed her undergraduate at University of Oklahoma on a football scholarship, competing in the NCAA. She is currently playing for Oxford United Ladies in the WSL. Also watch out for star striker Tina Gough (Blues, and her bright yellow boots!) who has massively improved in her second year at OUWAFC and is going to be a huge threat to any defence Cambridge try to put against her. Habiba Daggash (Furies) with her electrifying pace upfront, and midfield play-maker Marina Petrovic. 16

After a double Shoeing in 2013, OUWRFC lost the majority of its players to graduation. As a result, the 2013–14 season has been one of rebuilding. The club has once more had to fight a three-way relegation battle, seeing off dubious application of the BUCS wet weather rules and current-student requirements against two of its Welsh foes. While the prospect of winning three Varsity matches in a row seemed unlikely before October 2014, the team has since come miles: season highlights include a 68-0 hiding of Cardiff and a narrow 32-22 loss to a Gloucestershire squad packed with internationals (after losing 90-0 only weeks earlier). Of course, no summary of OUWRFC’s 2013–14 season could be complete without mention of that calendar, a glorious 12-page tribute to the girls’ fine rears and even finer ball skills. Reaching the front pages as far abroad as New York and South America, OUWRFC lived up to its motto of ‘back yourself’ (and yes, in case you were wondering, they really were naked for those scrum and lineout pictures…). By contrast, CUWRFC have bounced back from their double loss in 2013 to ascend to the top of their BUCS league. The Tabs have scored big wins over teams including Nottingham and Oxford Brookes, and in addition to their impressive on-field form will be keen to strike back for their 2013 Varsity decimation. They’ll also be keen to make up for the disappointment of not having become an international media sensation, a sore point if there ever was one. Although OUWRFC haven’t left much to the imagination this year, the question of whether Oxford can make it three in a row shapes up to be one of the highlights of the 2014 Varsity season.

Each competitor performs one kata, fights two bouts of kumite and each team performs one team kata. Each kata is scored by 5 judges according to spirit, speed, strength and precision. The middle 3 scores are summed and competitors’ scores are ranked; each rank earns a certain number of points. Team kata is judged in the same way – the university with the highest score wins the points. Kumite is one single point to win. In general, a full point is awarded for a head-level kick or a takedown and finish. Half-points are awarded for punches and body-level kicks. The winner of the bout earns their team the points, or the points are split in the case of a draw. Points from all three events are summed to determine the winning university. A university winning both the men’s and women’s competitions is awarded the Enoeda Cup. Over the last year OUKC competitors have delivered strong performances at national tournaments, including three competitors reaching the BUCS semi-finals. The current Oxford squad is the strongest in memory, and has the best chance to win.

Team captain Men’s Jacob Shah Women’s Posey Pugh 2013 scores Oxford won Women’s A and Men’s A Cambridge won Men’s B Oxford won overall OUTKD is the oldest Taekwon-Do club in the nation, tracing its history right back to the introduction of the art by First Grandmaster Rhee Ki Ha. In two rounds of two minutes each, points are won by a mixture of punches and kicks to the front and side of the head and chest, ranging from a single point for a punch to the chest to several points for jumping or spinning kicks to the head. Each team consists of five members who face one fight each. The team with the most wins out of those five fights is the victor. The two A teams’ results are weighted at two points each, while the Men’s B is weighted at one point. To win the overall shield, a club must finish with the highest number of points. Oxford has won the overall shield for the last six years running and is looking to add a seventh win to this run. However, last year they lost the Men’s A shield for the first time in those six years and will be looking to take it back this time.

Each team scores a point by catching the disc inside the other team’s endzone. Players must not run with the disc and if a pass is not complete or goes out of bounds, the other team are awarded possession of the disc. The Oxford teams are in fine form ready to pounce. The Men’s 1st team have enjoyed great successes at the Division 2 Men’s Indoor nationals, finishing 7th. The 2nd team have also been strong, finishing 12th at Indoor regionals (out of 32 teams), taking down the 1st teams of many other universities on their way to the top. The Women’s team are looking to prove their strengths outdoors having narrowly missed out on qualifying for Women’s indoor nationals due to injuries in the regional qualifiers. The Cambridge Men’s team have soared to great heights and won the Division 1 Men’s Indoor Nationals. Their Women have also been strong, qualifying for Indoor nationals and performing well on the day.

WATCH OUT FOR … Michael West (Men’s 1st) – the man has been voted as MVP time after time by his team and will be the one to look out for on the pitch. Serena de Nahlik (Women’s) – known by the name ‘lucky’ to her team-mates, she brings a huge amount of skill and energy to the team. No luck involved.
