We saw out 2023 with our annual Christmas match: 30 former U18 Academy players returning from University (and post-University life) formed the bulk of a Quins Legends XV and a Presidents XV which also featured alumni from Teddies Oxford, and further afield, including 3 members of 3rd XV captain Henry Fold’s family. Quins Head Coach Pete Davies managed the President’s XV whilst I and Academy Manager Tony McNally tried to manage the herd of cats that called themselves “the Legends”. On the day the Legends came a close second learning two lessons: life is best lived surrounded by friends, and Pete Davies should probably be picking their lottery numbers. The man has forgotten how to lose. On into 2024...

Jan 6th saw us host Stourbridge RFC for what was probably the most important match in our club’s history (for men’s rugby). Stourbridge, relegated last season from Nat 2, had beaten everyone in the league bar us (and had a draw against Banbury). We went into this match with a 2 point lead having beaten them away from home 22-27 back in September. The next team in the table, Bridgnorth, sat 17 points adrift. The league this season appeared to be a 2 horse race. Stourbridge brought a big crowd, credit to them, and with the home support swelled by flood cancelled fixtures, it certainly felt like the biggest crowd at Horspath Road for some time. It was a tetchy, difficult match, made more difficult by a flurry of second half yellow cards that reduced us to 14 men for 30 of the 40 minutes, and Stourbridge to 14 for 10 of them. Two tries, from Willo Bicknell and Jonny Ireland, and the accurate goal kicking of fly half Ewan Fox, were enough to see us through to an 18-13 win, which extends the lead over Stourbridge, to 10 points (although they have a game in hand). The team has been preparing hard for Old Halesonians away this week, knowing that with each week our performance must improve as we prepare for what we hope is in store for next season, and that every point we score, and do not concede, matters tremendously. Finally we received 3 accolades: England Rugby December Regional 1 Team of the Month after 3 wins with a 172 points difference, England Rugby #Grassroots Try of the Month on social media, for a Ben Vernede try against Syston, and a mention for the same and overall club progress on ITV’s Prem Rugby highlights. A good start to 2024.

The Oxford Quins three-day rugby camp at Horspath Sports Ground during the Christmas half-term break was a resounding success, attracting over 30 children of diverse ages and skill levels. The camp focused on not only enhancing rugby skills but also instilling a love for the sport through engaging and enjoyable activities.

Throughout the three days, the participants took part in a variety of skill-building drills. The coaches covered different aspects of the game, including attacking techniques, contact skills, speed and agility training, and strategic team games. Attacking drills aimed to sharpen players' understanding of offensive strategies, encouraging precise passing, dynamic ball handling, and effective positioning on the field. Contact skills were honed through carefully designed exercises that emphasized proper tackling techniques. These activities not only enhanced the children’s defensive capabilities but also instilled a sense of confidence when engaging in physical aspects of the game. Speed and agility sessions were incorporated to boost the participants' overall athleticism. These drills focused on quick footwork, acceleration, and change of direction—essential components for agile and effective rugby players. Team games served as a dynamic and enjoyable way to put newly acquired skills into practice. Participants engaged in friendly matches that reinforced teamwork, communication, and strategic thinking. The combination of these elements created a comprehensive rugby experience for the children. Horspath Sports Ground provided the ideal setting for these activities, offering ample space and wellmaintained facilities to facilitate a brilliant learning environment. Coaches were highly impressed with the children’s commitment and progress throughout the camp. The positive and inclusive atmosphere fostered not only individual skill development but also a strong sense of camaraderie among the young players. However, I have realised in doesn’t matter how low key you make the games, to the children it is a World Cup final, and they want to win at all costs. Looking ahead, the Oxford Quins are thrilled to announce plans to continue these camps throughout the coming year. The success of this event has reinforced the commitment to providing ongoing opportunities for children to delve into the intricacies of rugby, refining their skills and deepening their love for the sport.
