The Latin American community is one of the fastest growing in Baltimore. People originating from all corners within the Americas come together here, exchanging traditions and culture. The result is a Latin American experience that is vibrant, rich, and most importantly, accessible, all of which Latino en Baltimore aims to capture.
La comunidad latinoamericana es una de las de más rápido crecimiento en Baltimore. Personas procedentes de todos los rincones de las Américas se reúnen aquí, e intercambian tradiciones y cultura. El resultado es una experiencia latinoamericana que es vibrante, rica, y más importantemente, accesible, todo lo cual Latino en Baltimore tiene como objetivo captar.
Throughout the year, folkloric and contemporary artists perform music and dance at the Harbor. Hispanic Heritage month, September 15th through October 15th, offers a great opportunity to explore Latin American culture as several cultural events take place city-wide. A great example is the Fiesta Latina at the National Aquarium. This event offers popular tropical music genres such as cumbia, salsa, and merengue, as well as other cultural events such as folkloric dancing and capoeira.
Durante todo el año, artistas folclóricos y contemporáneos interpretan la música y la danza en el puerto. El Mes de la Herencia Hispana, que se celebra entre el 15 de septiembre y 15 de octubre, ofrece una gran oportunidad para explorar la cultura latinoamericana dado que varios eventos culturales toman lugar en toda la ciudad. The folkloric group Bailes de Mi Tierra has as its mission to promote and celebrate Mexican folklore through dance. Children participating in this enriching activity, such as the Veracruz dance “The Fisherman” shown above, help in the preservation of these dancing traditions.
El grupo folclórico Bailes de Mi Tierra tiene como misión promover y preservar el folklore mexicano a través de la danza. Los niños que participan en esta actividad enriquecedora, como el baile de Veracruz “El Pescador” mostrado arriba, ayudan en la conservación de estas tradiciones.
Fell’s point has become one of the hubs for Latin American culture. Here, there is a variety of activities, countless restaurants, and various festive events held throughout the summer and fall. These events offer a family-friendly atmosphere, complete with great food, music, folkloric dances, and traditional crafts.
Fell’s point se ha convertido en uno de los centros de la cultura latinoamericana. Aquí, hay una variedad de actividades, así como numerosos restaurantes, y diversos actos festivos celebrados durante el verano y otoño. Estos eventos ofrecen un ambiente cálido y familiar, completo con comida típica, música, bailes folclóricos, y artesanías tradicionales.
Fell’s Point often becomes the host of events on given occasions. Two of those are Cinco de Mayo, a Mexican celebration that commemorates the Mexican victory over the French army in 1862, and also Hispanic Heritage month, which is celebrated at the Plaza Hispana event as part of the Fell’s Point Fun Festival.
Both of these are great opportunities for the whole family to enjoy traditional music and dance, as well as great food and beverages such as grilled corn, Salvadorian pupusas, Venezuelan arepas, and the ever popular horchata.
Fell’s Point a menudo se convierte en el anfitrión de eventos en ciertas ocasiones. Dos de ellos son el Cinco de Mayo, una celebración mexicana que conmemora la victoria mexicana sobre el ejército francés en 1862, y también el mes de la Herencia Hispana, que se celebra en el evento Plaza Hispana como parte del Festival de la Diversión de Fell’s Point.
Ambas son grandes oportunidades para que toda la familia disfrute de música y danza tradicional, así como buena comida y bebidas como el elote asado, pupusas Salvadoreñas, arepas Venezolanas, y la horchata a base de arroz.

Establishments like Tortilleria Sinaloa offer authentic Latin American food throughout Fell’s Point. Mexican-style scrambled eggs with refried beans and avocado, and beef tongue tacos are community favorites.

Patterson Park has become a popular spot for both quiet relaxation and festive community gatherings. The Pagoda at the park is usually the place of choice for community functions and is where the Butcher’s Hill Flea Market and Craft Fair take place. Once a year, this park also hosts LatinoFest, a mid-summer fair that celebrates Latino culture with activities for all crowds including traditional dancing, craft vendors, and food from Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean.
El Parque Patterson se ha convertido en un lugar popular tanto para el descanso tranquilo como para reuniones comunitarias festivas. La pagoda es normalmente el lugar de elección reuniones comunitarias y es donde tienen lugar el mercado de pulgas y la Feria de Artesanías de Butcher’s Hill. Una vez al año, este parque también alberga LatinoFest, una feria de mediados de verano que celebra la cultura Latina con actividades para todas las multitudes que incluyen bailes tradicionales, vendedores de artesanías y comida de México, Centroamérica y el Caribe.
This yearly festival takes place at Patterson Park’s Pulaski monument during late June and is one of the largest Latin American festivals in the region.
Since its origins in 1980, LatinoFest has celebrated Hispanic culture and heritage by hosting activities such as crafts, authentic Latin American food, face-painting, and dancing lessons. LatinoFest also grants the opportunity for Latino community-based groups, such as EBLO and Casa de Maryland, to come together and interact with the public.

The Latin American community within Highlandtown is one of the fastest growing in Baltimore, and its cultural scene doesn’t lag behind!
The “Chicanismo y Latinismo” art exhibit at Creative Alliance is a perfect example of just that. This group exhibition explored how the Latin American and Chicano identities have evolved from their original definitions that depicted strict cultural narratives to describing broader conversations. Chicanismo has moved beyond the typical description of a Mexican immigrant into encompassing the dual cultural identity of Mexican-Americans. On the other hand, Latinismo offers a slightly different focus by emphasizing the diversity in nationalities within the Latino identity. In other words, it highlights the variety of different cultural backgrounds that comprise Latino culture altogether.
La comunidad latinoamericana en Highlandtown es una de las de más rápido crecimiento en Baltimore, y su escena cultural no se queda atrás!
La exposición de arte “Chicanismo y Latinismo” en Creative Alliance es un ejemplo de eso. Esta exposición colectiva exploró cómo las identidades latinoamericanas y de chicanos han pasado de representar estrictas narrativas culturales, a describir conversaciones más amplias. Chicanismo ha ido más allá de la descripción típica de un inmigrante mexicano, a abarcar la doble identidad cultural de los mexicano-americanos. Por otro lado, Latinismo ofrece un enfoque ligeramente diferente, enfatizando la diversidad de orígenes de la identidad latina. En otras palabras, el Latinismo destaca la diversidad de las distintas identidades culturales que conforman la cultura latina en conjunto.

Specialty stores like Cinco de Mayo in Highlandtown are a great way to bring new Latin American flavors home. Grocery stores like this one offer products that you don’t normally find in supermarkets such as edible cactus, tomatillo, Jicama, tres leches cakes, handmade crafts, and piñatas.
Las tiendas especializadas como Cinco de Mayo en Highlandtown son una gran manera de traer nuevos sabores de América Latina a casa. Las tiendas de comestibles como ésta ofrecen productos que normalmente no se encuentran en los supermercados como los nopales, tomatillo milpero, jícama, tres leches, artesanías hechas a mano, y piñatas.
To conclude, I ventured into Baltimore’s Latino communities; something that I never really had the chance to do as a student. I discovered that the Latino community in Baltimore is as diverse as Latin America itself. People from very different backgrounds coexist and share their culture in a way that I had never seen before, even having grown up in Latin America. You can find different cultural atmospheres all throughout Baltimore. The Inner Harbor is rich in Latin American entertainment. Fell’s point is more diverse and still easy to reach: plenty of restaurants to pick from, friendly community, and many cultural events one can attend throughout the year. Patterson Park is a great place to relax, play sports, and attend lively events such as LatinoFest and the Flea Market. And although more withdrawn, Highlandtown offers the most immersive experience; specialty stores, traditional restaurants, and art exhibits create a welcoming and enriching environment that should not be overlooked. I can only reccommend and urge that you explore Baltimore and all of the Latin American culture it has to offer!

Para concluir, me aventuré en la cultura latinoamericana de Baltimore; algo que nunca tuve la oportunidad de hacer como estudiante. Descubrí que que la comunidad latina en Baltimore es tan diversa como la propia América Latina. Personas de muy diferentes orígenes conviven y comparten la cultura de una manera que nunca había visto antes, incluso después de haber crecido en América Latina.
Sin embargo, se pueden encontrar diferentes ambientes culturales, incluso dentro de Baltimore. El puerto es rico en entretenimiento latinoamericano. Fell’s Point es más diverso y todavía fácil de alcanzar: una variedad de restaurantes para elegir, una comunidad amistosa, y muchos eventos culturales durante todo el año. Patterson Park es un gran lugar para relajarse, hacer deporte, e ir a eventos alegres como LatinoFest y el mercado de pulgas. Por otra parte, Highlandtown, aunque más retirado, ofrece la experiencia más inmersiva; tiendas especializadas, restaurantes tradicionales, y exposiciones de arte crean un ambiente acogedor y enriquecedor que no debe ser pasado por alto.
