RCB Bank: Trusted services and amazing people It has been 74 years since our first branch opened, and RCB Bank is still growing stronger each day. With 31 branches across Oklahoma and Kansas, over 500 employees and assets totaling over $1.9 billion, RCB Bank is one of the largest Oklahomaowned banks. A large bank that still very much operates as the small-town community bank that was chartered in 1936, that is. “We are part of our communities, not just branches operating in them,” said Roger Mosier, President and CEO of RCB Bank. “That’s really what sets us apart from the big guys.” Of the 12 communities in which RCB has a branch, Owasso has two easy-to-access locations in Owasso one on 86th Street North and the other at 96th Street North just off Highway 169 and has 41 employees. The staffs at the two RCB Bank locations in Owasso are involved in a plethora of civic and nonprofit organizations in the Owasso area, volunteering hundreds of hours every year. “We understand that being a community bank means responsibility,” said Frank Enzbrenner, President of RCB Bank Owasso. “We have a responsibility to our community, to be involved, and to be of service when we are needed.” RCB wants to help you get the home of your dreams Helping Oklahomans find the house of their dreams is a big part of the mission for Oklahoma-owned RCB Bank. “Right now we have low interest rates, incredible tax incentives and a stable housing market,” said Al King, Senior Vice President of Mortgage at RCB Bank. “It’s a great time to buy.” And an even better time to buy in Owasso, according to RCB Bank Owasso President Frank Enzbrenner. “Owasso is one of the fastest growing communities in Oklahoma,” said Enzbrenner. “The primary reasons for our continued success are our excellent school system, our progressive thinking city government and entrepreneurs who are willing to invest in our community.” Still, buying that house, whether it’s your first home or not, can be an

intimidating process; that’s where the helpful staff at RCB Bank can help. “There are a lot of options for homebuyers,” said King. “We can do everything from FHA (Federal Housing Administration) loans, to VA loans, rural development, home equity lines of credit, refinances, pretty much anything our community needs.” Assistance and special government programs are available for many Oklahomans including veterans, firsttime homebuyers, and the opposite spectrum, reverse mortgages for seniors age 62 and older. Our lenders are well educated on the programs available to Oklahomans and can help you find the best home loan or mortgage solution for your family. RCB also offers a secure, high-tech solution to home buyers: an online application process and information center. “The online system is great,” said King. “It allows you to fill out the initial forms in the comfort of your own home and take the time to gather those important documents you may need during the process.” The online application can be found at www.RCBbank.com, click on the RCB Bank Mortgage link. “We want to help build our Oklahoma communities,” said Enzbrenner. “And providing financing for families to get that home of their dreams is one of the big ways we do that. We can be your mortgage

lender.” Technology: More than what you’d expect from a community bank. “Whether we’re asked to meet personal or business needs, RCB is a bank big enough to provide cuttingedge banking services,” said Enzbrenner. “At the same time, we are small enough to provide the Owasso area with individual and personal banking experiences that you’ve come to expect from your hometown, community bank.” RCB Bank has been known for pushing the bounds of technology in banking for years - it was one of the first banks in Oklahoma to offer online banking, almost ten years ago, as well as one of the first to offer a “smart” ATM, mobile banking and remote deposit systems. “Banking has truly evolved,” said Enzbrenner. “Gone are the days of only cashing checks and taking deposits. Today we have instant access to our money through online and mobile banking.” RCB’s online banking touts features that are normally only offered by the big banks. For example, email alerts to tell you when your account balance is low or to remind you of a bill payment due, and the ability to transfer money between accounts, without ever stepping inside a branch. RCB also offers mobile banking with the same features and will roll out an

iphone banking application later this summer. Another feature unique to RCB is Rewards Checking. Typically these accounts that earn high interest to reward customers are offered through large online banks. “Rewards checking is definitely a positive product for our customers,” said Enzbrenner. RCB’s rewards checking account earns 4.10% APY on balances up to $25,000 and 0.25% APY on balances over $25,000. “This is an account that is accessible to just about everyone,” said Enzbrenner. “It’s a great product and certainly a wonderful account for our customers.” “Our new accounts department can personally assist our customers with our free and secure online banking in addition to the rewards checking and various accounts we have,” said Enzbrenner. “It’s reassuring that even with the technological advances we have, our bankers are still in their offices ready to help with anything our customers need.” Did you know that your bank does this? In addition to the traditional banking services both in the branch and via technology, RCB Bank offers services you may not expect: customized Wealth Management Services. RCB Wealth Management advisors can do everything an investment advisor at a large firm can, except our advisors live right here in your community. You don’t have to drive to a larger city to deal with an investment counselor, those valuable services are available right here, and with people you know and trust. Lance Skalnik, Financial Advisor with RCB Wealth Management is committed to providing not only quality service to his customers, but the right products and services for his customers. “I’m not interested in meeting quotas or getting customers in and out the door quickly,” said Skalnik. “I want to take the time to fully understand your needs, goals and attitudes toward investing and fully explain my recommendations. One size definitely does not fit all when it comes to financial

services.” RCB’s Wealth Management department can help with a wide variety of financial needs, including investments, life insurance and retirement planning. One big issue is 401K rollovers and IRA transfers. Most people expect their hard work to earn them a comfortable retirement. But if you’ve recently left your employer, that 401K may not be working hard enough. “I am committed to your financial future,” said Skalnik. “IRA’s and 401Ks are top of mind to a lot of Oklahomans right now and the products that we can offer can provide greater flexibility for retirement planning. The first step is for us to sit down and talk about goals.” RCB Wealth Management uses the broker/dealer services of Raymond James, a nationally accredited firm to provide global products and opportunities to RCB customers. “With Raymond James, I have all the resources needed to compete with any of the major financial firms,” said Skalnik. “Now you can have the same products but with better service because we’ve been your hometown bank for years.” “Lance is an invaluable part of our team of professionals,” said Enzbrenner. “He understands how to help people reach their financial goals.” “The bank provides you with the traditional financial services you need, like your mortgage and your checking accounts. Lance and the Wealth Management department can help you get ready for retirement or make sure your family is protected with insurance. It’s a beautiful service that benefits the Owasso community,” said Enzbrenner. RCB Bank is an Oklahoma-owned and operated community bank with assets totaling more than $1.9 billion, over 500 employees and 31 locations across Oklahoma and Kansas. Founded in 1936, RCB is committed to serving its communities with conservative banking practices and progressive banking products. For additional information, visit www.RCBbank.com.

Amber Post went to the Just Between Friends consignment sale in Tulsa nine years ago and made 75 dollars on her daughter’s hand-me-downs. She didn’t have to advertise for a yard sale. She didn’t have to stand in the sun for hours. She didn’t have to haggle with bargain hunters. She just dropped off what her daughter had outgrown and waited for the check in the mail. Now she owns a JBF sale of her own, two in face — and it’s one of the nation’s largest. Just Between Friends features more than 600 families doing just what Post did nine years ago: Leaving the work to the consignment staff and collecting the check. She holds a massive JBF sale twice a year in Kansas City, as well as the sale in hometown Owasso, where it’s been going since 2005. She took it over from the previous owner in early 2009, and the next sale is coming Sept. 22-25 at Owasso Assembly of God. Specializing in new and gently used children’s’ items, this year’s sale will have space for 1,000 consignors. “It’s just a great way to bargain shop and when you have kids, it’s just the perfect mix of buying and selling, Post said. Consignment sales work as giant yard sales with a staff that handles the selling. Consignors simply tag what they want to sell with a user-friendly barcode system on Just Between Friends’ website (www.jbfsale.com/Owasso), drop off the items and never think about it again - until the check arrives in the mail. And if they do want to think about it again, consignors have

amber Post of Just Between Friends

the ability to see how much money they made each day by checking online. Vendors keep 65-75 percent of the cost of their items, and many make hundreds of dollars, Post said. The average profit for a consignor is around $300. Quality items are bargainpriced, typically available for less than half of what retail stores are selling. Budgets are tight all over the area, so the popularity of consignment sales is skyrocketing, Post said. In fact, shoppers who would have thought it “uncool to shop at consignment sales five years ago are now the best customers at Just Between Friends, she said. For new consignors at the September sale, an orientation meeting is being held Sept. 12 from 2 to 5 p.m. at Owasso’s Panara Bread. Consignors there will learn what to sell, how to make the most money possible and can purchase supplies like tagging kits and hangers. This is the first year the sale is pursuing television advertising, and coupled with the state

of the economy, Post expects a record number of consignors, shoppers and even a greater number of volunteers who staff the sale. Volunteers get first dibs at the best deals in an early shopping presale, and then help manage the sale during public shopping hours. But with over 90,000 items, there’s plenty to go around. D’s Sweet Designs

Standridge Clinic

More space, same tasty treats

Well Beyond Chiropractic

The famous Truffle Bites at D’s Sweet Designs are available in 15 varieties.

If you haven’t stopped by D’s Sweet Designs for a tasty treat (or two) lately, you might be surprised at the changes that have been made to the cozy bakery. Owner DeAnna Doyle recently leased the space next door to add another thousand square feet to the store and has been busy renovating. “We want people to come by and see what we’ve done to the place,” said DeAnna. “It has always been a goal of mine for people to walk in and feel like this is a comfortable and fun place.” There is now room to offer special classes and events, including Cookie Parties. Cookie Parties are open to groups of up to 10 children and provide each with a cookie to decorate and a glass of milk. “We get our icing bags out and everyone has a good time,” DeAnna said. “They’re perfect for birthdays.” Reservations are being

accepted for a Gingerbread House Party to be held in early December. Cost is $35 and includes everything needed to make a gingerbread house. “We are taking suggestions for classes and also are considering doing some ‘Mommy and Me’ events in the future,” DeAnna said. “I’ve got a million ideas and with more space now, the possibilities are endless!” Retail products, including aprons, kitchen towels, coffee mugs, T-shirts and refrigerator magnets, will soon be for sale — all featuring funny sayings and some with D’s Sweet Designs logo. With all the changes, D’s Sweet Designs continues to make its delectable fresh baked desserts and cakes. Their famous Truffle Bites are still the most popular dessert item they sale. Truffle Bites are moist balls of cake that are hand rolled and dipped in dark or white choco-

late. “Even though others have jumped on the bandwagon and are now offering something similar, they don’t taste or look the same as ours and we have the largest selection of flavors,” DeAnna said. “There’s just nothing like them.” Many customers — including children — are choosing Truffle Bites as an alternative to traditional birthday cakes. “But we are still doing our awesome custom cakes and lots of weddings,” DeAnna said. D’s Sweet Designs is now open on Mondays! Hours of operation are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday. D’s Sweet Designs is located at 9100 N. Garnett Road, in the Ator Heights Shopping Center behind Ron’s Hamburgers. Join their Facebook Fan page for more about upcoming events and classes or call 2723103.

The technology can be used on the neck, shoulders, wrists, knees, feet and ankles. “If you are wondering why you still hurt and X-rays and MRIs are not revealing any information, the DMX is the tool of choice,” Dr. Standridge said. “If you have pain in motion, you need to be X-rayed in motion.” With the DMX and other cutting edge therapies, Standridge Clinic continues its commitment of offering the newest procedures and technology all for the goal of helping their patients reach their best possible health. “In all of the services and treatments we provide, we offer a level of personal service and touch that is unique to our office,” Dr. Standridge said. Zumba among offerings

Lose inches, lift and tighten skin

Penny Morris looked at herself in the mirror one day and decided she was getting old before her time. She was out of shape and overweight. It was time for a change. “I just made a decision to do it,” she said. She started eating right and exercising and dropped 81 pounds. Part of Penny’s success story is her participation in the Zumba Gold class at the Owasso Family YMCA. Designed for active senior adults, beginning exercisers, or couch potatoes wanting to get fit, Zumba Gold is an introduction to Zumba, a fitness craze that is sweeping the nation. “It’s the most fun exercise you’ll ever find,” said Maria Sullivan, Zumba instructor. “It’s mostly cardiovascular but it works your whole body.” Sullivan said Zumba is workout to a fusion of Latin and other international music with a fun, upbeat tempo. Instructors select tunes with a variety of paces and create a unique, dance-style interval workout alternating between slow, moderate and fast-paced moves. It’s aerobics with a fun twist. Penny Morris said she currently does four Zumba workouts at the Owasso Y each week and has changed her diet. “I eat a lot of fish, chicken and fruit,” she said. “I drink a lot of water.” Some of the regular participants in Zumba Gold also attend the other Zumba classes. Sullivan said they’re the inspiration for those who are just starting to get fit. Zumba incorporates ton-

"

ing through isometric moves combined with high intensity calorie burning. “We use stretches, especially at the end of class,” said Sullivan. “That increases flexibility.” Many of the moves, such as the knee lifts help adults maintain or develop greater balance. The dance type movements improve coordination. “Every movement that we do incorporates balance,” said Sullivan. “We’re using the core for stabilization.” The music makes the workout fun. “You don’t even realize you’re working out,” said Sullivan. Several of her students life and pipe up, that , YES, they are aware they are working out, but , YES, it is fun. “The people are so nice here,” said Penny. “They’re so friendly and supportive.” Fitness Director Michele Christensen said instructors and staff members are trained to be friendly and helpful, but not all of the support comes from paid staff. Particularly in the senior community at the Y, there is a lot of build in support and friendship that develops. “Everybody here is very very friendly,” said Christensen. “It’s like a family. Seniors here bond and talk.” Quarterly banquets help Y members meet each other and are heavily attended by the senior population, said Christensen. One involved senior organized a book and magazine exchange program. The Y allowed the space and all members, not just seniors, can benefit.

Zumba Gold is designed for very active seniors, but there are many programs for seniors to choose from depending on need and fitness level. Silver Sneakers works muscular strength and range of movement along with balance and endurance using hand-held weights, balls and elastic tubing. Silver Splash offers fun in shallow water to improve agility, flexibility and cardiovascular endurance, no swimming required. Cardio 101 is a lowimpact class for all fitness levels. Yoga Stretch moves the entire body through a series of seated and standing yoga poses with chair support. Twinges in the Hinges is an aquatic program taught at a lower intensity level for older active adults. The class is designed to help reduce pain and stiffness while increasing range of motion of the joints. “Most of our senior classes revolve around a chair so they don’t have to stand,” said Christensen. “Or they can hold onto it.” Senior needs are taken into consideration when setting up the classes. “Time of day is important to them. They don’t do early early morning,” said Christensen. “Safety is really important for them.” All ages can also participate in Choose to Lose which works on diet in addition to exercise and includes meetings with the dietitian on staff. Members can also sign up for consultations with the dietitian for an extra fee. It’s never too late to choose fitness and quality of life.

Carah McMillan of Silhouettes Body Sculpting

Carah McMillan’s business, Silhouettes Body Sculpting, is very personal. “It all started because I lost 100 pounds,” she said. “I was looking for a way to deal with my own excess skin in a nonsurgical way.” What she found worked for her and she wanted to share it with others. Silhouettes Body Sculpting — with locations in Owasso, Bartlesville and Bixby — offers a non-invasive form of liposuction utilizing applied cellular Electro-Aesthetics to target fat cells and reduce volume as well as stretch marks and cellulite. The treatments provide immediate results at a lower cost than medical procedures — without the downtime, side effects or complications. “At Silhouettes, our treatments firm and tighten skin

while emulsifying fat,” Carah explained. “Every single time you come in you’re going to lose inches. Silhouettes is an excellent compliment to any diet or weight loss plan, as it boosts your metabolism for a period of 21 days, post treatment.” Silhouettes treated more than 350 people in the last year, peeling off an average four to five inches per client. But the benefits aren’t limited to inch loss. “Dislodged fat cells (and the toxins they stored) are eliminated naturally via the body’s lymphatic system,” Carah said. “Not only does the body experience detoxification, the treatment also stimulates the regeneration of collagen.” Clients also experience increased energy. “The entire body benefits,”

Carah said. “The list of what it does just goes on and on — and it’s all good.” Client Cathy Cook says body sculpting is a “miracle.” “I lost seven inches in the first treatment,” Cathy said. “I didn’t experience any discomfort. I feel like a new person.” While body treatments comprise 85 percent of Silhouettes’ business, they also offer breast lifts and mini face lifts. The treatments have a cumulative effect, so three to six months after a completed set, the skin is still tightening and lifting. Silhouettes creates a pampering, comfortable environment and offers several treatment packages. Supplements for shaping up Dr. Gatlin is vet who cares When you bring your pet to VCA Owasso Animal Medical Center of Owasso, you’ll see exactly why their veterinarians are so highly praised for their kind and thorough care. VCA Owasso Animal Medical Center vets will give you and your pet all the time you need, and never rush through an exam. Whether you’re a veteran body builder or just looking to get yourself into shape, PowerHouse Discount Supplements of Owasso has anything you could need in the way of sports supplements. “We opened up a year ago in September, so we’re coming up on our one-year anniversary for being the hard-core sports nutrition and sports supplement store in the Owasso area,” said owner, Todd Godfrey. Godfrey, who previously worked at GNC, has himself trained in body building for around nine years — the past five of which have been “serious,” during which time, he’s expanded his knowledge on

sports supplements — a knowledge which he’s more than happy to share with his customers. “The kind of supplements a person takes largely depends on what they’re looking for — whether they’re wanting to lose weight, gain muscle, get fit, etc., all of which we carry supplements for,” he said. Some of the brand name supplements Godfrey keeps readily in stock include BSN, Gaspari Nutrition, Dymatize, Cytosport and Purus Labs, to name a few. “When I first opened this store, it had nothing to do with getting rich, like so many other supplement stores,” he said.

“This is what I love and enjoy, and if I can pay the bills doing it that’s even better. We’re here to help you bulk up, slim down, lean out or just stay healthy. Whatever your fitness or bodybuilding goals are we are here to help that’s our goal to you.” In addition to owning PowerHouse Discount Supplements, Godfrey also works as a personal trainer at Optimal Fitness 24 7, also in Owasso. PowerHouse Discount Supplements is located at 9220 North Garnett Road in Owasso. Hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays.

American Airlines Credit U You’re Not Just a Member...You’re an owner If you’re an employee of any airline or a household or family member of an airline employee, you have a resource available through American Airlines Credit Union. For nearly 75 years, AA Credit Union has been a member-owned, not-for-profit financial institution with no outside stockholders. What does that mean for you and your family? That means, when you join AA Credit Union, you’re not a customer, you’re a member-owner with a vote and a voice at the Credit Union. You see, we’re like a bank in terms of the accounts, loans and services we provide, but the similarities end there. Because AA Credit Union is a not-for-profit organization, our loan rates are generally lower than those offered by conventional, for-profit financial institutions. Whether it’s for mortgages, vehicles, vacations or education, our members enjoy extremely favorable loan terms. We’re also able to pay higher dividends on deposits and charge lower fees. Simply stated: We exist for our members’ benefit – not to profit from them. That’s what makes us different from other options in the marketplace today – and that’s how we’re able to offer benefits beyond banking. Credit unions were founded in the late 1800s on the basic philosophy of “People Helping

People.” The credit union movement began in Europe as a means for laborers to pool their resources for increased bargaining power when buying goods. The co-op also served to offer low-cost loans to its members. This model worked well, and the idea spread to the United States in the early 1900s. The Credit Union Difference today at AA Credit Union The basic, founding principle of People-HelpingPeople is still in place today at AA Credit Union, and despite advancements in technology, our mission is still the same. We work daily to find ways to help our member-owners get more for their hard-earned dollars. Because we are not-forprofit, we’re able to return

profits in the form of lower rates on loans, increased returns on deposits and lower fees in general. Simply stated: We exist for our members’ benefit, and not to profit from them. That’s what makes us different from other options in the marketplace today – and that’s how we’re able to offer benefits beyond banking. You can join AA Credit Union and become a part of this not-for-profit cooperative by making a deposit to a Savings account. This account is often called a “Share” account because it represents your part-ownership in the cooperative. Once you join, you’ll have access to all the benefits of membership. You can feel good about AA Credit Union because we’re an independent institution. Funds on deposit at AA Credit Union are federally insured up to $250,000 by the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund (NCUSIF), so you always know your money’s safe. And, depending on how you establish your accounts, funds may be insured for even more than $250,000.

Beltone Hearing instrument specialists Dick and Robin Clay of Beltone

Robin, a school teacher in Springfield, Mo., married her husband Dick Clay when he was a field worker for Beltone, selling hearing aids. Dick’s boss asked him if he would like to move to Joplin and take over that Beltone office. “Since Dick did not care for the field work, this job offer sounded great,” said Robin. “He went to work in the Joplin office and worked there a few years and his boss came back to him and asked him if he would like to buy the Joplin office. Dick loved working with people and doing the hearing aid work, so we made the decision to buy. Within a year the business took off to the point that it was more than a one-man show. So that’s when I came to work with him, figuring if I didn’t like it I would go back to teaching. But I love it. So here I am seven years later still doing hearing aids.” Beltone Corporate had Dr. Brandon Murray of VCA Owasso Animal Medical Center approved the sale and gave the Clays five counties to work in.

It wasn’t long before Beltone gave them more counties in Oklahoma and then some in Kansas. Today they have six offices located in Pittsburg, Kan.; Joplin, Mo.; and Grove, Miami, Bartlesville, and Tulsa, Okla. They also have service centers in 23 other locations. A service center is where they go into the community one or two days a month, which may be at a senior center, and people who do not want to travel to one of the office areas can come and receive service or free hearing tests. In Oklahoma these are located in Owasso, Skiatook, Claremore, Pryor, Jenks, Sapulpa, Bixby, Sand Springs, Okmulgee, Pawhuska, and Cleveland. The five-day-a-week offices are Tulsa and Joplin. Both Robin and Dick, along with five additional staff members, are Hearing Instrument Specialists, which means they are qualified to do hearing

tests. If they see any medical issues with their customers they refer them to ear, nose and throat specialists. “There are over 1500 locations across the U.S., so no matter where you purchase a Beltone, you can get the same free service anywhere across the country,” Robin said. “The hearing aids are constructed according to strict FDA standards and very high quality.” Now Beltone has come out with the TRUE product, which won’t whistle on the phone, and streams sound wirelessly from the TV and cell phone without using a neck device. “We have 100 percent money back guarantee on the hearing aids,” Robin said. “If they are not working you can get your money back or exchange it for a different product. No dispensing or service fee.” (Some information for this story came from the Vinita Daily Journal.)

Bloomingdeals Bloomingdeals offers women’s, men’s and children’s clothing

Laura Hardin, along with her husband John, opened Bloomingdeals, an upscale consignment shop, on June 7.

Laura Hardin was a stressed-out school teacher when she had the idea to start a new business in Owasso. “I’ve been a consignment shopper for a long time,” she said, “and the idea for this store just kind of came to me.” Laura and her husband John were returning home after visiting a family friend who owns a business in another town. “We started talking about having our own business,” Laura said. “Owasso hasn’t had a good consignment store for adults for six or seven years so it seemed like a good time with the economy the way it is and people not wanting to drive to Tulsa.” While she is a new business

owner, Laura is not new to retail. “My mom had a children’s store in Oklahoma City for 25 years so that has influenced me quite a bit,” she said. “I’ve always known what is involved.” After purchasing their location east of Goldie’s, family and friends helped with the renovations and Bloomingdeals debuted June 7 of this year. “I love it,” Laura said. “When we started, there were 60 people that gave me stuff to consign and now we have 243. It’s been a really good response and people are bringing in great items.” Bloomingdeals carries mostly women’s clothing —

from 0 to plus sizes — along with lingerie, shoes, purses and jewelry. They also have children’s and men’s clothes, as well as some baby items. Items may be brought to the store Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Consignors receive 40 percent of what it sells for. “It’s out on the floor between 60 and 80 days,” Laura said. “At the end of that time, we can donate items that haven’t sold or they can pick them up.” The store features ongoing sales, currently offering 25 percent off white tags and 75 percent off summer clothing. Bloomingdeals is open Mon.Sat. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, call 376-4695.

Trails End Knife Co. ‘Art’ knives, guns, pens Chuck McCormick traces his finger across the zigzagging designs. He holds the dagger safely pointed out and down, its handmade steel reflecting his other creations in the crafting room at Trails End Knife Co. The knife has 272 layers, each carefully sanded down to create soft ridges that come to an artistic pattern. Not all his knives have such designs, but sometimes he gets creative. A knife enthusiast since childhood, McCormick has turned his hobby into work. He and his wife run a business selling knives and historical guns to buyers all over the world — right from Owasso. Most of his knives are what they call Damascus blades, or steel crafted in a kind of pattern welding that mimics the way blades were made thousands of years ago. But not all of them. Trails End Knife Co. has knives that feature their handles as much as their blades. Some handles are made of genuine wooly mammoth bones. Some are made of buffalo horns. Exotic wood, too. McCormick calls them “art knives,” and many are made right on location. He has pocket knives, hunting knives and display knives — soon to be joined by stainless steel kitchen knives. The store also offers handmade pens, knives from local and Native American artists and a wide range of classic guns. McCormick, a retired Oklahoma highway patrolman, said he’s had a fascination with guns for years so it only seemed natural to include them in his knife store. Some of his guns are as old as the Civil War, and one is the

kind carried by Billy the Kid the Colt lightning. He even has a rifle used by British infantry to defeat the African Zulu nation during the Anglo-Zulu War in 1879. It just goes with McCormick’s attention to detail. He’s had it since he opened Trails End Knife Co. as an Internet company, garnering customers as far away as Germany. He’s been in the Owasso area for six years and has operated from his current building a block east of German Corner for three months.

But he’s been into knives for much longer. He loved knives as a boy and even played games with them — but it was a different world, he admits. Now he handles knives professionally so others don’t have to. Trails End Knife Co. products are displayed at gun shows in Oklahoma, Kansas and Arkansas. For more information or to buy knives, visit trailsendknifecompany.com. The store, located at 11429 East 116th Street North, can be reached at 3719980.

Stone Canyon: Rediscover nature, redefine home Progress and growth abounds in the beautiful community of Stone Canyon. Still Oklahoma's largest master planned community, much planning and care has been made to connect nature with a modern lifestyle. More than just another beautiful home, Stone Canyon offers a lifestyle some may only dream of achieving. In Stone Canyon, you choose the landscape in which you want to live - upper prairie, woodlands, canyons or meadows. The neighborhoods currently available and being occupied offer some of each. Settlers Creek, Tanglewood and Greystone neighborhoods offer one-acre, more or less, home sites in the wooded and prairie areas close enough for a short walk to the sought after Stone Canyon Elementary School. Large wooded home sites within The Bluffs surround the scenic golf course and offer the privacy, security and seclusion of living within a gated neighborhood. Future plans for neighborhoods will offer half-acre home sites along with Golf Villas and Garden Homes for those ready to enjoy a lower maintenance yard. Whether you're a growing family, empty nester or somewhere between, there is a neighborhood blooming just right for you.

Healthy living is a way of life in Stone Canyon. The walkable neighborhoods, the miles of nature trails and the two mile trek around the lake make it an inviting way to stay in shape by walking and biking without the hazards of urbanized areas. Recreational use of the lake for catch and release fishing, kayaking or paddle boating also offer diverse ways to enhance a healthy, active lifestyle.

Stone Canyon Lake and Park enhance family living through providing private leisure venues for the enjoyment and safety of the Stone Canyon residents. Those Stone Canyon leisure facilities also play host to a more public venue, however. A number of successful and fun filled public events have brought a wide diversity of cultural and family entertainment opportunities to Stone Canyon residents and people from surrounding areas throughout the community's two year history. The Wine & Jazz Festival last fall featured the late Earl Clarke and band with Oklahoma Wineries serving their latest harvest and award winners. A Sunset Concert just ended its first season with great crowds gathering to hear local bands play rock, pop, country and salsa. The highlight was the July 1 concert, which ended with a spectacular fireworks show and over 2,500 guests. The concerts were staged at the amphitheater with a wonderful setting overlooking the beautiful lake and Tulsa's skyline, just as the sun was setting.

Stone Canyon offers spacious, family living and at times, seclusion. But the community is also designed to allow residents to invite their friends, family or interact with the broader community of Owasso through these events. It's also a community that fosters giving back… or what is popularly known as Paying it Forward.. Hidden away within Stone Canyon lies The Patriot, a spectacular golf course in many ways beyond just the beauty of its land and unique layout. The creation of the golf course is a wonderful story of a happenstance meeting between developer David Charney and golf professional / F-16 fighter pilot, Major Dan Rooney. From that initial fateful meeting the story of the Patriot grew into the formation of a group, including renowned golf architect Robert Trent Jones II, the Owasso Land Trust development team of Charney, Pete Kourtis and Greg Simmons and others.

The Oxley Foundation gifted the land to Owasso Public Schools for the next elementary school. With the talent of architect Mike Stacy, this state-of-the-art school opened in August 2009 and features a nature theme throughout in both the décor and characteristics of each grade level. Whether learning about the teamwork of the ant, the patience of the butterfly, or maybe participating in the human sundial, these lucky K-5th grade children are experiencing school in new and comfortable setting.

As the golf course and clubhouse grew, so did the purpose behind this world class site. The Patriot pays tribute to family, friendship, patriotism and the spirit of the game through the Folds of Honor Foundation. Through Folds of Honor, members of the Patriot give back by making scholarships possible for surviving family members of fallen soldiers. This living tribute to the unselfish service of those who gave their lives for this nation exemplifies the quality of life and values inherent in the vision of the founders of the Patriot and Stone Canyon. For the full story of The Patriot Golf Club and a tour of its 18 holes, visit http://patriotgolfclub.com. Tulsa University has also claimed The Patriot as their golf home course and will be building a state-of-the-art golf facility for its boys and girls golf teams. With the utmost respect for the land and natural resources, much care was taken in the design and construction of Stone Canyon and The Patriot, leaving as much of the landscape undisturbed and to conserve resources for the maintenance of the grounds. Future plans for Stone Canyon Lake and Park include a fishing pier, butterfly garden and a stone labyrinth to enhance the natural playscapes and wide open spaces for running, roaming or flying a kite. A neighborhood swimming pool is also planned. A future Town Center in Stone Canyon will bring shopping, office space, church site and restaurants on the boardwalk overlooking the lake and will offer incredible sunset views. These amenities are just another way to reconnect with life in a community with purpose. Award winning custom homebuilders and Stone Canyon, the 2008 and 2010 Greater Tulsa Parade of Homes Best Subdivision Award winner, will be growing for many more years, keeping area employment, materials and suppliers in demand. The Stone Canyon Information Center is open 7 days a week, located at 7500 N 177th E Ave (76th St North & 177th E Ave), 918-376-6764 or visit www.stonecanyonliving.com

Stoneage Manufacturing caters to growing industry It’s misleading to call Stoneage Manufacturing a fireplace company. With three generations of stone masonry experience, the Collinsville company does specialize in custom stone fireplaces for indoor and outdoor use. But anything short of calling Stoneage Manufacturing a leader in the outdoor kitchen industry misses the mark. The company submits its products to rigorous government testing, earning it s products the highest marks in safety and durability. And it’s accredited by the Better Business Bureau, which means it has a proven history of honest business and customer satisfaction. But Stoneage Manufacturing products are also sold from coast to coast, and it’s a favorite among local contractors and do-it-yourselfers because of its ready-to-build kits, which make for easy assembly without the added cost of labor. Joe Rider, owner and manager, says the company relies on a lifetime of masonry experience to make some of the safest, most reliable products available — and that’s given Stoneage Manufacturing a prominent place in an industry that caters to outdoor enthusiasts and those who just like cooking outside. “To build a masonry fireplace from scratch takes a lot of art and experience,” Rider said. “Everything we make is designed to be a top-quality product that is pre-engineered with the installer in mind, and something that will still have that old-fashion quality.” Stoneage Manufacturing produces decorative contemporary and old country stone kitchen equipment for outdoor use — the kind you’d find at specialty kitchens. Brick ovens, pizza ovens, fire pits, kitchen islands, accessories and, of course, seven kinds of fireplace models make up its catalog. While its hot sellers are “kits,” or yet-to-be-assembled kitchen parts that anyone can install thanks to easy-tofollow directions, Stoneage Manufacturing also designs “outdoor living areas” and offers installation of the products it produces.

Do-it-yourselfers love the cheaper alternative, especially because there are still ample options for customization, Rider said. But self-assembled or not, Stoneage Manufacturing products come with a seal of approval from Underwriters Laboratories, a private product safety organization approved by the U.S. government to certify products. “For the consumer who doesn’t know much about the product, the U.L. certification gives them peace of mind to know it’s a safe product,” Rider said. The company’s fireplaces and ovens go through extensive heat tests, exposed to intense heat longer than what can normally be expected, ensuring they will not fail. Because Stoneage Manufacturing products are made of refractory materials, not regular cement, they are much safer and more durable than all other outdoor burn units. Cement tends to buckle and expand under long-term exposure to heat. “There’s a lot of things the average homeowner doesn’t know about heat and it’s long term effects on cement,” Rider said. “It gives consumers the peace of mind to know it’s a safe product.” Rider said his company also tests ovens for smoke ventilation. In an outdoor setting just as indoors, smoke must be directed to draw away from people. An improper design can cause significant smoke spillage out of the front of the firebox instead of drawing up and out of the chimney like it is intended to. “There’s a whole new set of conditions you’re dealing with outside, with wind and weather,” he said. The other underrated aspect of outdoor living areas: The value it adds to homes. “Consumers aren’t throwing their money away,” Rider said. “Adding outdoor masonry adds value to homes just like an indoor kitchen does.” Sometimes, that can add up to thousands — or tens of thousands — added to the value of a home. With the quality of Stone Age products a home

Examples of Stoneage Manufacturing’s work

owner can expect them to last a lifetime so if the value of the home appreciates over time so will their investment into the outdoor living area. Basically whatever a homeowner invest into it they can expect to get their money back if they ever decide to sale their home. Outdoor rooms add space so home-

owners can entertain guests, so it’s functional space that does not necessarily fall into the category of “backyard.” Outdoor Living Areas can be considered part of a home’s total square footage, along with entertaining family and Rider said. With the relaxing atmos- friends “It’s well worth the investphere and and fun memories that come ment,” he said.

Summertime Storage Owasso Boxing Club Offering friendly faces, safe places Sharing the love of the sport Aimee Watson, manager of Summertime Storage, answers the phone with a greeting worthy of the season. It’s a friendly voice that makes Summertime Storage stand apart, she says: Constant on-site manager or staff assistance. It also helps that the facility on Highway 20 just east of Owasso is one of the only storage companies in town offering moving supplies as well as UHaul trucks. It’s a one-stop moving supply store as much as a fully-staffed, camera-protected storage facility. With lock-protected gates, security cameras and a staff on the lookout, Summertime Storage is one of the safest places in Owasso to store just about anything, Watson said. “I’m real picky. I really get out there and make sure everything’s OK,” she said. “A lot of storage places don’t have staff on site.” But the facility has more to offer than security and friendly faces. One of its biggest selling points is that customers face no contract obligations to stay, and no requirement to pay a deposit up front. That’s in contrast to some facilities that require customers to pay a short-term “lease.” And while some facilities have a limited selection of storage room sizes, Summertime Storage has rooms ranging from 10-by-10 feet to 10-by40, with roll-up doors, pad locks available and an option for climate control that keeps sensitive equipment in a more stable temperature than outdoor storage pods. “That’s real good if people want to store pictures, medical equipment, pharmaceuticals,”

Aimee Watson, manager of Summertime Storage, believes in customer service.

she said. “There’s all kinds of different reasons to get a climate-controlled room.” Watson took over as manager just a year ago, so the facility is operating under relatively new management. One of the recent developments, she said, is the addition of moving supplies and U-Haul rental trucks. The facility just began offering a full supply of everything related to moving this summer. Summertime storage now

offers bubble wrap, mattress covers, paper wrap, locks, boxes and more boxes. “Before, people could just go to a grocery store to pick up boxes and now you can’t really do that anymore,” Watson said. So now, with Summertime Storage, people can pick it all up in one place — “everything you need for moving,” Watson said. The facility is owned by local businessman Robert Summers, whose name inspired its name.

Aaron Sloan loves boxing. A boxer in his youth, he became discouraged because there were often not enough athletes in his age and weight range for a bout. Oklahoma was not a place where boxing was popular and he couldn’t get fights. The love of boxing was still in his heart, however, and as he reached adulthood and became a father, he wanted to share the sport with his sons. “Once you’re in boxing, you always keep an interest,” said Sloan. He rented a warehouse and hung some bags so he and his boys could work out. Trouble was, his sons enjoyed team sports and weren’t interested in boxing. Still, there the bags were, so Aaron opened his gym to the public. Owasso Boxing Club grew from there. “We got so busy there were 25 to 30 guys a night working out,” said Sloan. He started coaching kids and invested in a quality ring so he could put on boxing events every few months. Owasso is a great place for athletic talent, said Sloan and his guys are winning fights throughout the region. His boxers are mostly kids and young adults he has trained from the beginning. At this time, he doesn’t deal with professionals. “I haven’t had anybody that already fought when they came in here,” he said. The intense workout is also popular with fitness enthusiasts who have no desire to fight. Sloan added women’s cardio and an early morning co-ed Boxing Boot Camp that starts at 5:30 a.m.

Aaron Sloan has opened the Owasso Boxing Club.

“It’s more of a fitness thing,” he said. Boxing is growing in Oklahoma. “We’ve got a good crop of guys,” said Sloan. Youth in Owasso come from stable homes and frequently have athletic ability and exposure so they make great boxers, said Sloan. Parents support the kids with the good nutrition to make healthy athletes and his gym has fared well with a winning record. “I work with all ages,” said Sloan. He said he finds those under age 7 or 8 may not have the focus yet to start full workouts, however. Sloan invested in quality equipment while keeping a bit of the “rugged gym feel” in his facility. It’s not a fancy store front property. Workouts are individually driven. This is no aerobics or martial arts class.

There is cooperation between fighters, a close relationship with coaches, and a supportive atmosphere. “Fighters are going to develop their own strong points, their own set of skills,” said Sloan. He starts new fighters on the basics and goes from there based on individual abilities. “Until they get those basics down, they don’t get to do anything else,” said Sloan. While Sloan’s gym isn’t like the inner city gyms that get kids off the streets in some metro areas, it does help channel young people in a positive and appropriate direction. For some, Owasso Boxing Club is a fun workout and a way to get into shape while learning self-defense skills. For others, it’s a sport. Sloan even has one 17-yearold girl who fights. Best of all, interest in boxing is growing and Sloan gets to share the sport he loves.

Kats Northside Chiropractic New chiropractic procedures ease low back and neck pain Kats Northside Chiropractic is having a grand opening — or maybe we should say a reopening — right here in Owasso! Dr. Darin Kats has practiced in Tulsa for some time but now he has moved much of his time and attention to Owasso. Kats Northside Chiropractic is located across the street from Owasso High School. He is bringing new ideas and new procedures to the Northside practice that are seeing significant success in the areas of low back pain and neck pain. Both his flexion/distraction technique and the spinal decompression procedures are providing great relief and correction of these common spinal problems. In both cases, patients with bulging discs or pinched nerves get the best results. Clinic statistics show an 80 percent success rate in the elimination of symptoms and results are much more permanent than previous techniques used in the clinic. If you have low back pain it can be coming from many different sources but some of the most common are disc

problems and nerve entrapment. Even patients with significant amounts of arthritis in the spine can see good results using flexion/distraction and spinal decompression techniques. Here is why the new techniques are so successful. Between each set of vertebrae there is a spinal disc. When that disc is put under pressure from an injury or too strenuous activities the disc can bulge out against a nerve in the back or neck. Both the injured disc and the pinched nerve can cause pain is areas of the body like the neck, shoulders and upper back, mid-back, low back and down the legs. In both cases the procedures used by Dr. Kats reduce the pressure on the disc and have the potential to reduce the bulge without surgery. Once the disc bulge is reduced, the pinched nerve is freed and the symptoms go away over a short period of time. Dr. Kats is available throughout the week but also has Saturday and evening hours. You can check out these new procedures at www.northsidefamlychiorpractic.com or call for an appointment at 274-3888.

Find your fall fashion flair Betty Scott teaches taekwondo at ATA Family Karate.

ATA Family Karate ‘Believe in yourself’ The spirit of Martial Arts shapes lives in a positive direction by teaching focus, concentration, awareness, self-esteem and confidence. More than just exercise, the taekwondo classes taught by Betty Scott at ATA Family Karate in Owasso help children and adults lean to believe in themselves and say, “Yes, I can!” Taekwondo is a non-aggressive and ethical system of selfdefense that started over 1,000 years ago and has since spread internationally to become one of the world's most successful and popular martial arts. As a taekwondo instructor, Scott has been inspiring students for two decades. “I have been in taekwondo since January of 1988. I’ve been teaching since 1990,” said Scott.

She opened her own school in 1997. “I was in Tulsa for 10 of those years and I’ve been in Owasso for four years,” she said. A mother of two, Scott understands the special needs of children. Her son, Bobby, age 16, and daughter, Jessica, age 9, have been studying taekwondo since age 3. Bobby is a second degree black belt and Jessica is a first degree black belt. Scott loves teaching her Tiny Tigers classes and is also certified in kids safety training. Adults benefit too, not only from the fitness, but from the resulting self-esteem that comes with learning and coordinating martial arts skills requiring a combination of strength, flexibility and balance combining mind, body and

spirit – the perfect antidote to aging! Martial arts is an indomitable weapon against assailants from within and without. Scott teaches Tiny Tigers ages 3-6; Karate for Kids ages 7-12, and adult classes aged 13 and up. “We have to be certified,” said Scott of her affiliation with the American Taekwondo Association. “We have to keep up with our education.” Scott is certified in several weapons, women’s self-defense and kids safety training. She will be testing for her sixth degree black belt in October. “This is a family-oriented business,” said Scott. She said taekwondo offers the perfect balance of mental and physical training. She offers free introductory classes for those who want to try it first before committing.
