The Aga Khan’s purchase of the Lagardere bloodstock continues to reap rich rewards, such as the progressive Sagawara, who got the best of a tight finish to the Gr1 Prix Saint-Alary. This filly by the in-form Shamardal is a grand-daughter of Saganeca, a mare acquired by Eric Puerari on behalf of Jean-Luc Lagardere for $165,000 at Keeneland’s 1994 January Sale. Saganeca’s appeal stemmed largely from her racing record, which included a fourth in the Prix Vermeille, a close second in the Gran Premio di Milano and a fine fifth of 18 in the Arc. She achieved an International Classification of 119, though she managed only one win (Gr2 Prix de Royallieu) from 25 starts. Puerari no doubt also liked the fact that Saganeca’s third dam was La Mirambule. This outstanding performer established herself as France’s champion three-year-old filly of 1952, when she took the Prix Vermeille by eight lengths as a prelude to finishing second in the Arc. La Mirambule then passed on her talent to her sons Tambourine (1962 Irish Derby) and Nasram (1964 King George). Saganeca was purchased primarily as a mate for Lagardere’s young stallion Linamix, who sired four of her first six foals. Two of her Linamix foals excelled on the track, with Sagamix winning the Arc and Sage Et Jolie the Gr2 Prix de Malleret. Sage Et Jolie has since become the dam of Sageburg, winner of the Gr1 Prix d’Ispahan, and now her younger sister Sagalina is responsible for another Gr1 winner in Sagawara. Saganeca also produced Sagacity, winner of the Gr1 Criterium de SaintCloud, to Highest Honor. Whatever Sagawara achieves from now on, the Aga Khan must be looking forward to adding her to his broodmare band. She has no inbreeding in her first five generations and has a pedigree free of Sadler’s Wells, Danehill and Green Desert. 87 GALLINULE S G3 CURRAGH. May 27. 3yo. 10f.

RUN (c Rock of Gibraltar: Newmarket S LR), Stendhal (c Polish Precedent: 2nd Prix Altipan LR), Chambord (c Green Desert: 2nd Prix Jacques de Bremond LR).

It looks as though Frankel isn’t going to be the only product of the celebrated Galileo/Danehill cross with excellent prospects in this year’s top prizes at around a mile and a quarter. Last year’s dual French Classic winner Golden Lilac proved that she is as good as ever on her return to action in the Prix d’Ispahan. Despite having been off the track for more than nine months, she proved too speedy for the redoubtable Cirrus des Aigles. In the process she improved her record to six wins from seven starts. Frankel’s dam Kind was a Listed winner with a Timeform rating of 112 and Golden Lilac’s dam Grey Lilas was even more accomplished. After finishing second in the Pouliches, she confirmed her standing among the best three-year-old fillies of 2004 by taking the Prix du Moulin. Grey Lilas proved she stayed a mile and a quarter by winning the Gr3 Prix de la Nonette, in addition to finishing third in the Prix de Diane and second in the Prix de l’Opera. Grey Lilas’s three-parts-brother Kandahar Run – by Danehill’s son Rock Of Gibraltar – showed smart form at up to a mile and a quarter and their dam, the Listed winner Kenmist, also won at up to a mile and a quarter, while showing her best form over a mile. Golden Lilac’s third dam Mistral’s Collette was a useful Irish two-yearold who later enjoyed stakes success at up to a mile and a quarter in Italy. General Cloney, a brother to Mistral’s Collette, did well at up to a mile and three-quarters. Although Golden Lilac has a tendency to race freely in the early stages, she too stays a mile and a quarter well, even though her dam is by Danehill, a sprinter-miler, and her second dam is by Kenmare, winner of the Prix Jacques le Marois.
