Enormous odds must surely have been available about Turtle Bowl completing a 2,000 Guineas double in England and France. The bet would have been lost, as his son French Fifteen found Camelot a neck too good at Newmarket, but the stallion was fully compensated when another son, Lucayan, came out best in a tumultuous finish to the Poule d’Essai des Poulains. Aliette Forien, who stands Turtle Bowl at Haras de la Reboursiere et de Montagu, told the Racing Post that the stallion “is a wonderful horse – he is big, very correct, with a nice head and good bone. He is fantastic looking.” Turtle Bowl was also a very smart racehorse, as he showed in winning the Gr1 Prix Jean Prat, and he is out of a very successful mare in Top Ville’s daughter Clara Bow. However, he started his stallion career carrying the twin handicaps of being a son of an unfashionable sire, in Dyhim Diamond, and of failing to win anything of note during his last two years in training. Consequently he has only 43 foals in his first crop – the crop which has produced French Fifteen and Lucayan. He has 52 two-year-olds in 2012 and 38 yearlings. No doubt he is now guaranteed considerably larger books and support from leading breeders. French Fifteen’s dam was a provincial winner and Lucayan’s dam, the provincial middle-distance performer La Vltava, managed just two wins from 22 starts, including one on all-weather. Lucayan was an €85,000 purchase at Arqana’s breeze-up sale. His second dam failed to win and has yet to produce a black-type performer but his third dam, One Life, had the considerable distinction of being a half-sister to Miesque. This magnificent mare won the 1987 1,000 Guineas and Poule d’Essai des Pouliches before becoming the dam of Kingmambo (1993 Poule d’Essai des Poulains) and East Of The Moon (1994 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches and Prix de Diane). Yogya, another half-sister to One Life, produced Six
Perfections, who gained compensation for her unlucky defeat in the 1,000 Guineas by winning the Prix Jacques le Marois and Breeders’ Cup Mile.
