i n 1 9 6 6 , with the war in Vietnam heating up, a “newly minted” Dr. Peter Singer volunteered for active military duty and was sent to Vietnam, 1967: Peter Singer as a where he served as a battalion doctor battalion doctor in Vietnam near Da Nang. During his service there, Peter quickly recognized the dire situation of medical care, especially among the children, and devoted countless hours to their care. He made a vow to himself to return someday after his tour of duty, and to continue the work that he knew was unfinished.

Peter’s chance finally came in 1990, when, while serving as the medical advisor to the Vietnam-themed television show China Beach, he was introduced to Le Ly Hayslip, who asked him to join her fledgling organization, East Meets West Foundation. Since 1990, Peter has been devoted to expanding EMW’s impact in Vietnam and beyond, and has served as Chairman of the Board for nearly twenty years. Under Peter’s leadership, EMW has grown from operating a few small projects, into a major international development agency with over 100 staff, involved in health care, education, clean water, and a host of other programs and projects.
