It is noted that one-in-four children in Australia are overweight. Preliminary findings have suggested that knowledge and attitudes relate directly to the behavior of children and adults. Furthermore, primary and secondary research suggests that food preparation in the home will shift the knowledge, and thus the attitude and behaviour of children and adults towards wholesome food. Kik is an analogue kitchenware’s kit that facilitates social interactions of food preparation between children and parents to aid the change towards healthy eating habits, through an awareness and understanding food. This product aims to provide a practical way in which children and parents can continue the conversations relative to sociocultural and pop-cultural trends like ‘Masterchef’ and ‘Masterchef Junior’. Being an analogue system, interactions with the product are physical and involve both parents and children. These interactions provide children with the fundamentals of food preparation tasks like weighing and measuring, whilst highlighting the educational role of parents during the preparation of food by getting ‘kids in the kitchen’.
