Welcome to Owatonna Parks and Recreation Fall-Winter 2012 This fall/winter brochure will be of help to you as our department advertises its seasonal programs, activities, and amenities with this feature. Included in this brochure is information about the River Springs Water Park, information covering parks and their amenities, youth and adult recreation programs, therapeutic recreation, information about Brooktree Golf Course, SeniorPlace activities, and services and information about Tennis and Fitness Center. Our department did update our website to make it much more customer friendly, www.ci.owatonna.mn.us, created a Facebook page, and have made major attempts to “get the word out” about the Parks and Recreation Department and their programs. We will put information together each season that can be picked up at the Park and Recreation office will continue to create flyers for the schools about our youth programs, and continue our weekly column with the People’s Press, along with our bi-weekly radio shows on KRFO. If you have any suggestions on how to make further improvements on advertising our department services, please let us know. As all of us try to cope with the tough economic times, I find myself reflecting upon the core values of what our mission is at the Owatonna

Parks and Recreation Department. After 35 years in the Profession, I still get the feeling of satisfaction to see so many citizens using the parks, trails, recreational activities, Brooktree Golf Course, SeniorPlace, Skate park, River Springs Water Park, and the list goes on and on. The department does significantly add to the quality of life we enjoy here in what we call home…. Owatonna Sincerely,

Therefore adaptive equipment, program modifications, and other accommodations are considered to assist the individual as needed. Individualized consultation with parents and coordination with the coach/instructor help make the transition possible. In addition, all coaches, WSI’s and summer staff receive a brief orientation to working with the child with disabilities in their initial training sessions. 1 to 1 assistance for your child is provided upon request. Registration: When enrolling your child in sports and other youth programs, we request that you check the “Special Needs” column on the registration form. We must be aware of any medical condition that warrants medication or special attention from Park and Recreation staff while your child is in our care. The Park Passport program is part of the City of Owatonna Wellness Committee initiative to promote healthy choices in individual’s lifestyles. The program is intended to encourage individuals and their families to explore our parks and exercise through walking the mapped trails. Individuals walk through designated parks and look for hidden passwords long the trail. Write the password on your passport and collect them all. The program has three components: The Passport – A handout used to collect all six Parks passwords. The Map – A detailed map of all six Parks with the designated walking routes. Somewhere along the

route a sign is located with a password on the back. The Password Box - A colored box on the Passport Handout where the hidden password is written.

Interested individuals should obtain a passport from the City of Owatonna Park & Rec. website (http:// ci.owatonna.mn.us/parksrecreation/) or pick one up at the Park & Rec. Office. The program is FREE and all access to the Parks is FREE too! The program lasts from September 1st - September 29th for a total of 4 weeks. Once you get your passport, visit all of the Passport Parks and find the hidden password along the trail, write the password down and enjoy the park or facility you are visiting. The six Passport Parks are Dartts Park, Mineral Springs Park; Manthey Park, Kaplan’s Wood Trail, Leo Rudolph Nature Reserve; and Buxton Trail. Completed passport equals 12 miles of trail walking All Parks will have a small sign mounted to a post along the trail. The signs will be located approximately 2’-4’ from the ground. On the back side of the sign will be a word. Yellow signs for week 1 & 2 will be placed in the park for only the first two weeks and then removed. White signs for week 3 & 4 will be placed in the parks in different locations from the previous weeks. On the back side of the sign will be a password. Write the corresponding password in the colored box on your passport. For example, if you go to Morehouse Park during the second week of September and find a Yellow sign, read the word and write it in the Yellow box on your passport. Return to the park during week three or four and look for a White sign with a password in a different location long the same mapped trail. Read the password and write it in the White box on your passport.
