Table of Contents Chamber Review The Owasso Chamber of Commerce is the leading business organization in Owasso. Collectively, we are viewed as a body of influence for advancing the growth of business and industry. The 400 member organization represents the interest of business through its legislative advocacy programs, economic development initiatives, and its pursuit of quality of life initiatives for the citizens of Owasso. A primary purpose of our chamber is to serve as the guardian of the local economy. This means to preserve existing jobs, expand new industry, and develop an educated workforce. It also means to pass business friendly legislation at the local, state, and federal levels of government. We are pleased to have a strong working relationship with our city leaders, economic development officials, and local school administrators. We also have

Dr. Chris Kelley 2015 Chairman SAHO Animal Hospital an excellent relationship with administrators from Tulsa Tech and TCC. A unique challenge to our chamber is creating value for all members, thus, addressing the question of “what’s in it for me?” To address this question we advocate for large scale initiatives that benefit businesses of all sizes. Such

initiatives include expansion of transportation corridors, broadening the range of healthcare services, and expanding economic and workforce development within our city and region. In 2015, we were extremely excited with the opening of Macy’s Fulfillment Center, the widening of U.S. 169 from 56th St. North to 66th St. North, and the remarkable expansion of Rejoice Christian Schools. We welcomed many new retail businesses, restaurants and professional service providers to Owasso. We are a strong advocate and participant in the OneVoice Regional Coalition, the Tulsa’s Future Economic Development Initiative, the Annual Regional Inter-city visit, and the Annual Washington, DC Legislative fly-in. Owasso is a dynamic growth community with a very bright future. With proper vision, planning, and working together, we will continue to be the City Without Limits.

Macy’s fulfillment center dedication ceremony was held on August 6, 2015. Terry Lundgren, Macy’s Chairman, President & CEO, led the ceremony. He welcomed Governor Mary Fallin and numerous local, county, state, and federal officials. The groundbreaking for the $170 million, 1.3 million s/f facility occurred on April 17, 2014. The center is located on a 72 acre tract of property located on the south side of 76th St. North between Sheridan and Memorial, and resides in the Owasso school district. At the time of the groundbreaking, Peter Longo, Macy’s president of logistics and operations, stated that the center would employ nearly 1500 full and part time employees. An additional 1000 part time seasonal employees will be utilized. This was one of the nation’s largest building projects in 2014.

Terry Lundgren Chairman President & CEO

Total usable space exceeds the square footage of 46 football fields. This was a tremendous effort put forth by many individuals and entities throughout Oklahoma. Special recognition goes to the Tulsa Regional Chamber, OLT-David Charney, City of Owasso, Tulsa County Commissioners, ODOT, INCOG, Cherokee Nation, and Governor Mary Fallin. The Owasso Chamber was proud to have been an active participant in bringing Macy’s to our school district.

Rejoice Christian School officials are excited that the elementary school, the first phase of their new $50 million campus, opened in October, 2015. The mid-high and high school will open in 2016. The new campus has modern facilities with space and technology for RCS students to develop spiritually, intellectually and physically while being socially equipped to impact their community and the world for Christ. The new campus will feature a new high school, middle school, combined preschool and elementary building and athletic facilities. “We plan to grow from 800 students to 1,500 students,” said Dr. Craig Shaw, Rejoice Christian Schools Superintendent. With increased enrollment, RCS will become a larger employer in the Owasso area. Currently, RCS has more than 130 employees, and they plan to expand to approximately 200 employees in the next few years. The new campus will allow Rejoice to provide the Owasso community high-functioning Christian education for many years to come. 12 Lifestyle Owasso Magazine 2015-2016

In 2013, a small group of committed volunteers came together with an idea. Believing Owasso is a city filled with interesting people and amazing potential they began to dream of a way to transform Main Street, once a month, into a place where our community could celebrate life together. The first Owasso Gathering on Main took place August 1, 2013. Surpassing all expectations, thousands of people from all over Green Country enjoyed great food, local entertainment, and a unique Owasso Shopping experience. The Gathering began its first full season in 2014, running from April through October on the first Thursday night of each month. At times, attendance has reached as high as 10,000 people. The Gathering has garnered national attention.

Of all his accomplishments and awards over the past 34 years as Owasso’s head baseball coach, Larry Turner puts winning his 1,000th game this year, with his son Dodger pitching, and his long-time assistant Steve Holleman along side, as the very best. “The championships have been cool,” Turner added. There have been 11, and he’s glad his players got that experience. He got an early start. Moving to Owasso in 1970, he started as catcher three years for Melvin Spencer and became Owasso’s first All-State player in that sport in 1973.

Larry returned after college and became Spencer’s assistant for four years, then took over the program in 1983. His goal was to continue Spencer’s goal of winning 20 games a year. He missed it that first campaign but has been successful every year since. His first state title was in 1987; the Rams started a run in 1997 in which they were champs or runners-up every year except three. His 2013 squad went 36-0. “I’ve been surrounded by great coaches, players and friends,” Turner said. “I’ve been blessed more than I deserve.”

13th State Title in Program History

Turner’s right-hand man the past 34 years, Steve Holleman has experienced many highlights with the Ram baseball program. Steve, a native of Texas, met Larry at American Christian College where they both played baseball. After teaching a year in Texas his wife Betty got a teaching job in Owasso in 1979. Steve followed but there were no baseball openings. For the next two years he coached jayvee and when Turner became head coach he brought Steve on board. “The relationship with the kids has been the neatest thing,” he said. “We’ve coached some great players who have been good people. They’ve made us look good. They’ll be what I will miss most when I retire.”

Small Business Saturday is a campaign that was founded by American Express in 2010 and is held every year on the Saturday following Thanksgiving. In 2014, the Owasso Chamber created Shop Small Owasso as a way to support this day and our local small businesses. Merchants are able to participate at no charge. Participating businesses hand out passports to shoppers on Small Business Saturday. Shoppers receive a stamp in their passport each time they make a purchase at one of the businesses. Passports are turned in and drawings are held to win a grand prize item from each of the businesses. Shoppers are eligible to win from each business they shop at. There is no limit to the number of prizes they can win! In 2015, we added the “Surprize Patrol” to find shoppers participating in the passport event. Central Bank of Oklahoma, Prosperity Bank and Candlewood Suites provided gift cards for the Surprize Patrol to award shoppers with free money as a thank you for shopping small. Follow the Owasso Chamber Facebook page to stay up to date on #ShopSmallOwasso.

One of the most important components of the Chamber is our Ambassadors. With a staff of only three full time employees, we rely very heavily on our Ambassadors to assist with events and other functions. The primary responsibility of our Ambassadors is to act as a welcoming committee for new business. They attend Ribbon Cuttings and Ground Breakings as representatives of the Chamber. They help with membership recruitment and volunteer their time on a regular basis to promote the Chamber.

Leadership Owasso is a Community Leadership Training Program organized by the Chamber, to increase the participants knowledge of the inner workings of our city and region. This eight month program begins in October and continues with one half day class held each month. The final class in May is an all day trip to the State Capitol where participants hear from State leaders first hand. A graduation ceremony is held during the June Membership Luncheon, where students are presented with their framed certificate of completion.

Promoting Character & Community

Fuel for Healthy Relationships The Owasso Character Council exists to promote character within our community. The Council strives to strengthen the values of Owasso residents, families, and businesses. This is done each month by emphasizing one of forty-nine defined character traits. A joint effort has been created between the City of Owasso, the business sector, the faith community, and school systems, to promote and encourage excellence in character. Character is the foundation of every right choice. It is the fuel for healthy relationships. It influences an individual and defines a community. Character strengthens business and helps the economy to grow. It adds lasting value that affects every aspect of our lives. The character trait of the month is introduced during council meetings and has been part of every chamber monthly luncheon since 2002.

Character Matters: It doesn’t happen by accident, but by a deliberate decision to invest our time, attention and resources to strengthen those values that make our community great. It is defined by the core values we talk about, the choices we make, the stories we celebrate and the lives transformed by our healthy relationships with one another. When the choice is difficult, when mistakes are made, when things don’t go as expected, character becomes the road map to help us stay on track or get back on track. Character exists when we make choices based on who we are rather than what is expedient in the moment. Mission: The Owasso Character Council will strengthen Owasso residents, families, and the community as a whole by promoting excellence in character, helping Owasso to become known as a “City of Character.”

The Owasso Character Council was established in 2002 and is a 501(C)3 non-profit organization. On May 21, 2002, the Owasso City Council proclaimed Owasso a “City of Character in cooperation with the International Associa tion of Cities of Character.
