3RD BLACK BUSINESS MONTH

From February Black History Month to March Black Business Month Listen to the 2 ½ minute audio at www.Marching2March.org Overground RR!! ® pastors ask each and everyone of us to listen and have everyone you know to listen. Post it on your facebook page, e-mail it, text it, and tell everyone you can to listen. Then support the Overground RR!! ® in fulfilling Dr. King’s true dream of a truly free Black community.

T

he ORR!! ® pastors reminded us that there is no people with a legacy steeped with more Godly courage, fortitude, vision, depth, and determination than our people. We have come from the belly of the terroristic slave ships, through chained and Jim Crow slavery, from the back of the bus, to this moment in time. Through the OvergroundRR!! ®, we now set our eyes on the prize of true economic freedom and self reliance. With all of the heroes and sheroes who gave their lives to bring us to this point, all of our time could be consumed in the museums which remind us of how far we have come. And yes!! We must never forget the Amistad, the horrible ship which in 1839 was transporting our parents like cattle from their homes where they’d been stolen from their mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, sons and daughters. We should get excited over and over again when we look back on the moment at approximately 4:00 a.m. on July 2, 1839 when one of our people, Joseph Cinque` (obviously not his birth name) led a mutiny which saved 53 of our ancestors from being delivered to the terrorist slave owner. Yes, as part of Black History, the ORR!! ® pastors tell us that it was a proud moment when our people resolved to live free or die fighting. However, the ORR!! ® pastors remind us that it is history. We can’t consume our lives living in the past. We must take up the fight for our time.

much farther along the freedom journey than when this great man was born in 1929. After having gotten us off the back of the bus, into the front doors of stores, restaurants and hotels, into jobs and careers we could not previously have hoped to have, Dr. King told us that the next leg of the freedom journey is building our own economy. (Listen to the video at www.Marching2March.org)

1. What’s your position on ensuring the Black Business Community is at the table of all government deals from the start? What are you specifically going to do about it? How will the public know you did it?

Today we benefit from each battle waged by our people in the past, whether it was successful at that particular time like the Amistad mutiny in 1839, or ended in apparent defeat like our beloved brother Nat Turner on August 21, 1831, whose revolt ended with him being lynched.

2. What is your position on Georgia denying Medicaid expansion? Since you represent me, what are you going to do about it? How will the public know you did something? (Not in your area of governance won’t sell).

The ORR!! ® pastors tell us to know our history. But, we must honor their lives and their sacrifices by seizing the issues of our day like Harriet Tubman did in her day.

Dr. King’s last message to us was to build up and support our own businesses. Throughout all of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Dr. King’s “I Have A Dream” speech, you never heard a word spoken of Dr. King’s very direct and urgent mandate to us to become more economically independent as a people.

Like Harriet Tubman, Dr. King did not spend his life lost in history. He took on the issues of his time. Because he and countless others with him built on our history rather than living in history, when his life was taken on April 4, 1968, we, as a people, were

Well, OvergroundRR!! ® pastors are pointing the community to the lifechanging words of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., spoken on April 3, 1968 mere hours before he would lose his life. On that fateful night, Dr. King called for all of our people

3. What is your position on food stamp cutback? What are you going to do about it? How will I know you did anything? 4. What is your position on Black Business involvement on major private sector development? Since equal opportunity must include business opportunity, what are you going to do about it? How we the public will know you did anything? 5. Do you want to just set policies and govern our city (county) services or do you want to set policies that bring about equalization in Atlanta? If the latter, what are you going to do about it? It is not that our “favorite” politician has not thought about these questions, they just don’t act and we don’t ask or require them to act. To actually take on the role to represent us on these big important, issues is sometimes hard and sacrificial. But if they don’t, who will and/or why do we need them? We are a long way from equal, so let’s at least ask the questions.

to practice a concept we now refer to as “Kitchen Table Affirmative Action.” The speech that contained this profound call for action is most famous for the contents of the final stanza wherein he proclaims, “I’ve Been To The Mountaintop!” Of course, that part of the speech is climactically moving and inspiring. However, we have failed to pay attention to the very explicit instructions he also gave to us as a people. Specifically, he directed us to change the economic landscape of the Black community. (See Community Income Spending Comparison Chart on page 1) Over the years, we have indulged in the emotional inspiration of the message - and rightfully so. But in the midst of our indulgence, it appears that we have overlooked the life-changing directive he gave regarding the essential need to build up and support our own businesses. 40 years later, much like the people of God who wandered in the wilderness for 40 years and then finally emerged and awakened, the Continued on page 5

Guest Presiding Elder Presiding Elder Larry W. Hudson, Sr. South Atlanta District, Sixth Episcopal District African Methodist Episcopal Church

Congratulations to Rev. Larry W. Hudson, Sr. on his recent appointment to Presiding Elder of the South Atlanta District of the Sixth Episcopal District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Blessings to you as you journey for God!

“It is with great joy that I have the opportunity to share a word of encouragement with you. Whatever we face, God has the plan worked out for victory. The more we activate our faith in God, the more His way is revealed to us.”

Activating Your Faith “The Lord is near to all who call on Him, to all who call on Him in truth. He fulfills the desires of those who fear Him; He hears their cry and saves them.” Psalm 145:18-19

M

ost people feel there is something missing in their lives. Sometimes it could be a desire for a closer relationship with loved ones. You want to be in more control of your life. You feel the need to satisfy a spiritual longing. You feel that there is a void and it must be filled. The very thing that is missing is faith.

We trust Him to come through; trust Him to make a way and we believe it. Trust points us in the direction of God’s way. Trust causes you to act on your belief that God has a way to bring you out. Trust then consists of both attitude and action. Trust guides you into His will, now that you realize that it was God who brought you through.

How do I activate my faith when I’m going through a crisis? I begin by identifying the problem and believing a way out exists. The way out is God’s way. Believing that God will make a way activates our faith. It is our faith in God that brings us through our trials and tragedies of life. Our failure to embrace our faith in God simply means we don’t believe.

The more you activate your faith in God, the more His way is revealed to you. Your faith becomes activated in your trials and crisis until it seems like your faith is set on ‘automatic’. God is working it out even when you can’t see it. God is doing on your behalf and wants you only to trust Him. It is times like these you wonder, “Am I doing it or is God doing it?” The answer is yes to both questions because God requires us to do what we can do and God will do what only God can do. Be encouraged. We can all activate our faith through believing, trusting and praying.

God requires not only believing in Him but trusting Him. Trust is how we enter into a relationship with God.

Presiding Elder Larry W. Hudson, Sr. has been a pastor for over 40 years and recently served as the pastor of St. Mark AME Church in southwest Atlanta from 2004-2014. In June 2014, he was appointed as Presiding Elder of the South Atlanta District of the Sixth Episcopal District of the African Methodist Church in Georgia, which includes 23 AME Churches in Clayton, DeKalb, Fayette, Fulton and Troup counties.

Heroes and Sheroes of the Church First Gentleman Daniel W. Wright, Jr. has been a member of Faith African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church (Rev. Jawwad J. Love, Pastor) for 12 years where he is a class leader. Although his wife, Dr. Gloria Ward Wright and he pray together to broaden and deepen the family structure, they worship in separate Christian congregations. Mr. Wright is a life member of the NAACP, past president of the Georgia Association of Educators, and a Deputy Registrar with the Fulton County Board of Elections. He stated, “My life is an influence on every life mine touches whether I realize it or not. I am responsible and accountable for that influence.”

First Lady “First Lady” Libby Pollard knows her role is not as glamorous or appealing as some think. For more than 21 years she has been united in the covenant of marriage to Pastor Gregory L. Pollard, Senior Pastor of The Enon Church. She had to learn that as the Pastor’s Wife, God had entrusted her with a greater anointing and authority over the enemy to build up and spiritually protect the Man that He had set as Head Servant in ministry. A season of growth brought her to an undeniable, unashamed Love Affair with her Lord and Savior. Thus her Spirit walk began teaching her to pray without ceasing and to always stay on guard. She has come to understand how the enemy will distract in order to get to the Man of God. Today she is in the line of fire as THE FIRST LADY!

Mother Mother Iven Wright is a member of St. Phillip African Methodist Episcopal Church where Rev. Dr. William D. Watley is the Senior Pastor. Since joining St. Phillip’s 25 years ago, she has become a Charter Member, Attendance Recorder, Health Reporter and Bible Study presenter to name a few. As an active member of the Nettie Lewis Moore Women’s Missionary Society (Unit 6), in 2001 she was awarded “Woman of the Year”. God has sustained her through the years, and has brought her from “a mighty long way”. From the “Big Apple” to the “Georgia Peach” and He is not through with her yet!!

M2M Coordinator David Walters coordinates the activities of Overground Railroad M2M Black Business Month with Cascade United Methodist Church. A Cascade member for over 12 years, he is very active with the Business Alliance Ministry of his church. The mission of the Business Alliance Ministry is to unite all business owners and potential owners to share resources and collaborate within the Cascade Church Family and the greater Atlanta community. The alliance serves the community and church by conducting monthly Saturday Alliance Meeting with guest speakers; hosting annual wealth-building seminars, converting the Cascade Business directory to the web site, and promoting the Business Alliance events to encourage participation within Cascade and the surrounding community.

Usher Rita Holt-Smith is the Lead for Team Hospitality at Impact under the direction of Pastor Olu Brown. Since 2007 she has enjoyed being a servant leader and embraces the philosophy of “extreme hospitality” at Impact. It is a part of Impact’s DNA - beginning in the parking lot and extends throughout the worship experience. We know first impressions mean a lot, especially for those who are seeking God or a spiritual home; therefore, we are a church devoted to creating innovative and unique experiences. Our motto is, “Doing Church Differently.” “Come and See!”

Member Servitor Dwayne “Snapper” Mack, affectionately known as “Snapper” for his love of taking pictures, has been a member of The ARK of Salvation for over 10 years. He currently serves as Member Servitor, which means Male Servant. In addition to serving the members, he wears many “hats” including project manager of renovations, resident photographer, and audio visual staff member. He formerly served as the member services “Go-to-guy”— a liaison for Pastor Nathaniel H. Bronner, Jr. and the membership. Snapper received an Associate’s degree in photography from the Art Institute of Atlanta in 1981. He has worked as a photographer for the Bronner Brothers Hair Show, The Business Anointing, V-103 and Upscale Magazine. He also received the 2012 Pastor’s Appreciation Award. “God told me if you take care of my house, I’ll take care of yours – and God has done exactly that.”

A Message from The Chief Convener

THE COST OF DEBT simply trying to live beyond our means. For some strange reason we feel that we deserve and should have what our neighbor has, even if they simply make more money. Recently I came across an article that helps us to recognize if we are in debt and I would like to share some of those thoughts with you because as a Pastor I have seen and heard this far too often.

Rev. Timothy McDonald, III

T

here is a quote that I have used across the years that has helped with me to deal with many situations in my life: “You cannot solve what you will not face.” One of the most claring problems/challenges in most of our lives is DEBT. I have learned that Debt is one of the things that most of us fail to face and to own and yet it impacts our lives in so many ways. Debt affects our ability to enjoy life, family, career and church. How many of us have wanted to give more to our Church Ministries but feel that we can’t afford it? For so many of us it seems that we are just working to pay Bills and I am here to share with you that this is NOT God’s Will for your life. Far too many of us are in these challenging situations simply because we have not faced that fact that we have too much Debt or that we are

One of the first signs that I am in Debt is: If you have no idea how much you owe, you are probably deep into debt. When was the last time you took a serious look at your Mortgage, Credit Card and other Loan DEBTS? What is the Total amount minus your Mortgage that you owe? In your honest opinion, is this a reasonable amount or is it way out of line based on your annual income? Most African Debt is Credit Card Debt where you are being charged 20-22% Interest annually. Getting back to my Premise: “You cannot solve what you will not face.” You have to own your debt no matter the amount then figure out a way to reduce it. If your entire debt minus your mortgage is more than 1/3 your annual income, you are in a serious situation that can cripple your ability to enjoy life. A Second sign that I am in Debt is: You are forced to pay your bills late because you do not have all the money. We have made the practice of Robbing Peter to pay Paul an every week occurrence. This is no way for Christians to live. I was always taught to Live Below Your Means. What this simply means is don’t spend your life trying to keep up with the Jones, but every pay period make sure that you are

inspirational pastors of The OvergroundRR!!® are telling us to listen to Martin: [C]ollectively -- that means all of us together - collectively we are richer than all the nations in the world, with the exception of nine. Did you ever think about that? After you leave the United States, Soviet Russia, Great Britain, West Germany, France, and I could name the others, the American Negro collectively is richer than most nations of the world. We have an annual income of more than thirty billion dollars a year, which is more than all of the exports of the United States, and more than the national budget of Canada. Did you know that? That’s power right

“You cannot solve what you will not face. You have to own your debt no matter the amount then figure out a way to reduce it.” in a position to put some money aside. If every Pay Period you discover that you do not have enough money to pay your bills then YES you are in Debt. A Third sign that I am in Debt is: My Financial Situation causes me to lose sleep. This is happening to far more people than we want to admit. When we do not get the necessary rest that our body requires, it affects our Health. If you find yourself moving slow, inattentive more than normal, unable to focus or feeling drained and lethargic, then perhaps your Debt is getting the best of you. If you are preoccupied with money before you go to sleep, and money is the first thing on your mind when you make up, then You Are In Debt. Being consumed by my inability to pay my bills to the extent that I cannot sleep is a clear sign that I am carrying too much Debt. Fourthly, if you are Hiding your Spending from a Loved one: You are in Debt. I have always shared with Couples that if you cannot be Honest about your Finances, then you do not have a Marriage, you have an Arrangement. When you feel it necessary to keep the ones you love in the dark regarding your Bank Statements, Bills to be paid, Student Loans, Car Notes and the

there, if we know how to pool it. . . . But not only that, we’ve got to strengthen black institutions. I call upon you to take your money out of the banks downtown and deposit your money in Tri-State Bank. We want a “bankin” movement in Memphis. Go by the savings and loan association. I’m not asking you something that we don’t do ourselves at SCLC. Judge Hooks and others will tell you that we have an account here in the savings and loan association from the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. We a r e t e l l i n g y o u t o f o l l o w w h a t w e a re d o i n g . P u t y o u r m o n e y t h e re . You have six or seven black insurance companies here in the city of Memphis. Take out your

Status of your Savings, then perhaps it is time to pause and ask the Lord for Help. Too many of us tell ourselves: I Got This!!! I Joseph Hudson G o t it Under Control, when the reality is it is consuming us. It affects our Families, our Relationships, our Work, and our Health and if the truth be told, it affects our ability to worship and praise the Lord. I deliberately did NOT start with the Obvious and that is: WE ALL HAVE SOME DEBT. I am not referencing normal, manageable Debt. What I see as a Pastor are members so in debt that they cannot function. It shows in their faces, in their inability to enjoy Worship. I see it in their expressions when it is time for the Tithes and Offerings. God wants to free you from this weight, this burden. It requires owning where you are and coming up with a Plan to Reduce your Debt. It requires Faith, Patience, Trust, and Common Sense. God says that You Shall Have Life and YOU will have it More Abundantly. So I ask: ARE YOU LIVING THE ABUNDANT LIFE? Make a Decision TODAY to start getting your finances under control so that you can enjoy this wonderful creation that God has given to us.

insurance there. We want to have an “insurancein.” Now these are some practical things that we can do. We begin the process of building a greater economic base... now have the ORR!! ® Business Directory (see pages 13-15) to find businesses owned by members of our own community. It has become the central business directory in the Atlanta Black community found in The Conductor newspaper which has grown to have the third largest circulation per issue in the State of Georgia. Additionally, the ORR!! ® Business Directory can also be found on the website, www.overgroundrr. com. It has grown to have more than 1 million hits per year. Can your church business owners be found in the ORR!! ® Business Directory? Yes...the pastors of this great movement pointed us to the victories over the chained and Jim Crow terroristic slavery of our past. Our leaders pointed out that when Dr. King on April 3, 1968 directed us to start supporting our own businesses, Black spending was more than $30 billion a year. Now, as shown in the chart on the front page, it is $910 billion dollars. The Arts, Gospel, Entertainment and Sports (A.G.E.S.) sector of the ORR!! ® was very active during Black Business Month 2014. For the first time in ORR!! ® history, the ORR!! ® hosted the premiere of a movie -- The Retrieval. ORR!! ® pastors decided that they will not sit back and complain about the filth which is polluting the minds and souls of our people.

Aaron Turpeau

Instead, through A.G.E.S., they are actively supporting good entertainment. Watch the Q&A moderated by ORR!! ® Chairman Aaron Turpeau with the cast of The Retrieval with powerful opening remarks by ORR!! ® Pastor Rev. Dr. Gerald Durley.

The Atlanta Business League hosted another outstanding Congress on the State of Black Business, and the attendees Rev. Dr. Gerald Durley at Concerned Black Clergy meeting gave a thunderous round of applause to the ORR!!® for a dynamic Black Business Month 2014. Last, but definitely not least, Gladys Knight’s Chicken & Waffles on Cascade Road hosted Joseph Hudson ORR!! ® Tuesday (see pages 6-7). Now, we are marching to the March 2015 for the 4th Annual Black Business Month supporting and celebrating our own businesses throughout the year. Won’t you join us? Get onboard the OvergroundRR!! ®

How does the average hard working tax payer end up in a tax mess? Bad tax advice: WARNING!!! Don’t take tax debt advice from “side-line coaches”, which is what I call individuals who prepare taxes seasonally and kitchen table tax preparers and advisors. If you fell in the former group, don’t despair, there is hope. I recently sat in on Becky Davis, one of my peers, “The P Factor – a 3 part strategy to higher profits” seminar. PRODUCTIVE people do the right thing in the right order. They establish priorities and focus on the high dollar activities. They PLAN carefully then diligently and systematically execute what they planned. The most mercurial of the 3-P formula is the PEOPLE factor. By making proper selection of your human resources, and then with consistent communication, training and nurturing, success may be achieved. KSTB Enterprises, LLC: “Fundfilling” Your Goals KSTB

Kimberly Sellars-Bates Founder and President KSTB Enterprises, LLC

Enterprises, LLC. is a premier grant writing and non-profit development firm specializing in sustainable resource development for all clients through a customized approach. The company was founded in 2007 by Visionary and President Kimberly Sellars-Bates. “I founded KSTB because people would approach me and let me know that they had ideas as to how to help the community but they were unsure of the process.”

“In America, there are almost 100,000 funding sources of various types -- yet over 60% of non-profit organizations are underfunded!” KSTB is a full service fundraising and non-profit management firm that takes individuals and groups from starting a non-profit (501c3) organization, to creating effective fundraising management systems to help them achieve long-term success. Their client’s budgets range from $50,000-$13,000,000 per year. They are committed to structuring each project, capital, endowment or annual campaign to maximize a client’s opportunity. In America, there are almost 100,000 funding sources of various types -- yet over 60% of non-profit organizations are under-funded! A resource development strategy is crucial to the long term success of any organization. KSTB provides the expertise and coaching to craft and submit grant proposals that, with persistence, will produce results. Five Key Services for Mission Fulfillment and Development KSTB currently provides five key services to meet the needs of non-profit development clients in Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, South Carolina, Florida and New York: 1) 501c3 Startup Package KSTB offers a one-stop total package that assists clients in creating a non-profit from scratch and “fundfilling” their vision and goals. KSTB provides simple steps to getting incorporated, registered, and operating as a full-fledged, legal entity. KSTB even develops a Board by conducting an executive search and leading a series of training to ensure optimum operation of the new non-profit. 2) Sustainable Resource Development (Four Funding Streams) Funding is a critical component to the success of your program operation and project goals. We understand here at KSTB the challenges of operating your program or project amid a down economy. There’s good news for you! There is funding available and KSTB can serve your organization or project needs to sustain or take your vision to the next level. This service integrates a package deal that gets to your core needs of revenue generation. 3) Development and Management Seminars KSTB seminars are filled with current and relevant information on how to get past seemingly difficult roadblocks. Seminar Topics include: • • • • •

“How to Start a Non-Profit Organization” “No nonsense Guide to Fundraising” “Get on Board (Board Training)” “Securing Grant Funding” “Grant Writing Fundamentals”

4) Prospect Research Fundraising is about getting to know your donors and building relationships. KSTB’s Prospect Research Reports provide extensive information and data you needed to determine which individuals, foundations or corporations have the greatest financial Mrs. Sellars-Bates is currently responsible for over $20 million in grants and contracts. KSTB analyzes and implements action plans for all ongoing fundraising initiatives including: individual, corporate, and foundation prospect research, annual fund appeals, grant proposal writing and Board solicitation and training. KSTB also works with the organization’s Program Managers and Board of Directors to ensure successful fundraising

capacity and inclination to give to your organization. 5) HR Compliance Services Small non-profits may not need one, but if you have over two employees, having an employee handbook is a good idea. Having a written employee handbook ensures everyone in the organization has received and is operating from the same information. This can eliminate any dispute as to whether basic employment information was communicated. To this end, all employees should be asked to acknowledge in writing their receipt of the handbook at the time they are hired and at any time the handbook is modified. Challenges Small non-profits, including many schools, churches, community organizations and social service agencies, face many unique development challenges. Without a large and influential board of directors, a substantial fundraising staff, or widespread name recognition, these charities often struggle with development, in many cases operating “donation to donation.” This situation is unfortunate, because many of these smaller non-profits provide key services to the communities where they are located which aren’t replicated by larger non-profits. Their mission matters… and they need increased fundraising to survive and thrive. Churches Churches have a particular challenge when it comes to fundraising. KSTB works with several churches and have had great success in educating the executive board and congregation. Our initial assessment usually shows a pattern. Unfortunately, regular giving hasn’t yet become a habit for many, which underscores the importance of ongoing stewardship education. Fundraising doesn’t have to be painful or frustrating. With the right vision and education, raising funds can be a wonderfully growing experience for church leaders and congregants alike. Raising funds, whether for general operations or building campaigns, usually follows a cycle: Identify, interest, involve, invest, and influence. 1) Identify: Identify your top givers. You may have people in your church who would gladly give more, if only they were asked. 2) Interest: Present the church’s vision and make a compelling case. 3) Involve: Show how your church is helping the community and how the members can be a part of the vision. 4) Invest: Once your congregants understand the vision and how they can participate, ask them to invest. Although this is usually the toughest step, it is certainly the most crucial. 5) Influence: This is where you engage people and encourage them to invite others to participate. It’s also where you celebrate by sharing stories of how God has worked in the lives of those who pursue biblical generosity. Be sure to regularly thank and remind the congregation of how their giving is fulfilling your church’s vision. Because churches have ongoing needs, they must sustain this cycle. When people see how God works through their giving, there is usually a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to partner. KSTB holds fast to a quote from Bisagno-- “Fund-raising builds the kingdom and blesses the folks. Don’t be fearful and don’t be negative. Positively, joyously, abundantly, and expectantly go to the Lord and go to your people, and watch what God can do.” Customized Solutions Getting funded or building a sustainable operation can be challenging and expensive. Offering a customized service model allows KSTB clients to pick which services they need to fit their budget and timeline.

St. Philip AME Church:

TO THE NEXT LEVEL UPWARD T he history of Saint Philip African Methodist Episcopal Church is an eloquent testimony to the faith of the human spirit. Saint Philip Church began in Reynoldstown (Atlanta, GA) on Renfro Street, under the leadership of Reverend Browning, after which a long line of great leaders emerged. In 1970, Rev. George Moore, Sr. was assigned to Saint Philip by Bishop Hickman and in 1977, a group of farsighted, faithful trustees under the dynamic leadership of Pastor George Moore purchased the edifice now known as the Chapel, for $468,000.00. Through subsequent years, the chapel was redecorated and furnished and upgraded as the congregation continued to grow. In 1980, Saint Philip opened the Child Development Center and in 2006 the Family Life Center (FLAC) was dedicated. Pastor George Moore retired after 40 years of dedicated and exemplary service and leadership. After which in 2011, Bishop William P. DeVeaux appointed Rev. William D. Watley, Ph.D. as Senior Pastor of Saint Philip. Rev. William D. Watley, Ph. D. is the Senior Pastor of the historic 5,381-member Saint Philip AME Church in Atlanta, GA. Dr. Watley is a mentor, educator and prolific Rev. William D. author. He has Watley, Ph.D. written and edited Senior Pastor 21 books and is the founder and C.E.O. of New Seasons Press, the publishing division of William Watley Ministries. Through his leadership, Dr. Watley is committed to following God’s vision for moving the congregation and community “To The Next Level Upward. Vision 2014: TO THE NEXT LEVEL UPWARD Rev. Watley is a firm believer that there is always another level and dimension beyond where we are. “God has a vision for our lives that is greater than any vision we can have for ourselves or that others can have

Surpassing Faith Commit to having an upward focus - strive to do more, believe more and give more. Worship services, bible studies, various seasons of fasting and prayer will focus on growth and newness. The key to surpassing faith through surpassing worship involves keeping God at the center and hungering after His presence. In addition, St. Philip is planning to enhance its worship service by adding exciting elements such as reinstating the SPC Orchestra, developing a Singles Choir and installing high definition cameras to enhance the worship experience for those who attend service in person as well as their online family of worshippers. Strengthening Family Continued focus on strengthening and empowering married families through the Marriage Ministry and married couples retreats. The Sanctifying Singles Ministry is charged with encouraging singles to live a healthy, happy, and fulfilled life as a single Christian. Singles Week and a Singles Service have been planned for this year. Superior Fitness Emphasis will be on proper nutrition, prevention and treatment of illnesses that are prevalent among the African American community. Healthcare professionals will sponsor health events. Fitness classes at the church have also been proposed. The fourth Sunday of every month will continue to be Sweat Suit Sunday. Soaring Finance Commit to understanding and reducing debt. Debt is the silent cancer

Youth center, located on the upper level, has a café, computer and homework area and an activity center. The Senior Center, which includes an arts and crafts area, was designed to meet the growing needs of this important and active group of Saint Philip members. Carver College:

F

No Longer the Best Kept Secret in Atlanta!!! Training to Transform Carver has become one of the most vibrant higher educational communities in the Atlanta metroplex. We’re committed to offering students, young and old, the best opportunities for spiritual growth, academic training and Christian service. Whether in the classroom, in the chapel, the student center, the gym or on the ball fields, our desire is that the Carver experience will cause you to become more and more like Christ.

or far too long, Carver College has been the best kept secret in Atlanta! For over 70 years, Carver College (formerly Carver Bible College) has offered several bachelor, associate level and certificate degree programs. These programs have prepared thousands of men and women for a variety of careers in ministry and the marketplace. Over 502 alumni, many of whom are serving in leadership roles can testify to leaving Carver with both integrity in their hearts and skill in their hands – as it was said Robert Crummie of David (Psalm President Carver College 78:72). Three Toney’s come to mind: Tony Evans ’72 (pastor of Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship and president of The Urban Alternative in Dallas, TX); Tony Van Dyke ’89 (Cartoonist and Author – Moody Press); and Toney Mosley ’05 (pastor of Woods Memorial Baptist Church in College Park, GA).

Regardless of your major, the most important thing you’ll take away from Carver is a solid biblical world view, which includes wisdom and knowledge for living a fruitful life. Solomon valued the wisdom and knowledge of God above any earthly wealth and so do we. At the end of the “day”, God, who is our Judge (2 Timothy 4:1-8; James 4:12), won’t judge us by our vocations, but rather by our character and by our deeds (II Corinthians 5:10). The right deeds result from the right choices and decisions that spring from a well of wisdom and knowledge of God’s way and God’s will. This we acquire from a thorough study of God’s Word. Yes, Carver is one of few institutions in America that still believes that a thorough study of God’s Word is the most significant discipline anyone can ever undertake.

Bold, New Course! Last year, Carver charted a bold new course! Our accrediting association (www.abhe.org) approved our request for an additional degree program. In June of 2013, the approval came for a new B.A. degree in Psychology! While our Biblical Studies degree offers training for over 34 different occupations, our Psychology degree prepares students to serve in over 124. Princeton Review argues that Psychology is the #2 major in the U.S. Under the guidance of professors who are both prepared and prayed up, each student gains effective skills for life, ministry and the marketplace!

In recent years the Lord has blessed Carver not only to add a new degree program, but also accomplish several other milestones, including: reaffirmation of accreditation through 2021, enlarging our footprint from 2

½ acres to 16 acres on Cascade Road, accessing Title IV funding (financial aid) for eligible students and winning the NCCAA –D1 Men’s Basketball South Region Championship!

What Are We Going To Do Now?

T

he Mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut produced an outbreak of State level gun control bills around the country. But it produced an even stronger pro-gun backlash. Led by NRA scare tactics, people all Rev. Frank Brown across the nation have rallied President, CBC together for more aggressive measures to expand gun rights. In every instance they have pointed to their second amendment rights. Suggesting that in some way the effort to crack down on gun violence and the proliferation of guns in our society infringes upon their constitutional rights. The second amendment to the Constitution has long been the rallying cry of gun enthusiasts in this nation. However, the second amendment specifically relates to militias rather than individuals. The second amendment states: “A wellregulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” It was written at a time when America did not have a big army, and was designed to give folks a chance to protect their freedom during the American Revolution. But it was also expanded to give the militias particularly in the South during slavery, a chance to protect themselves from uprisings or slave revolts. Research suggests that in 1739, slaves organized a revolt that came to be known as the Stono Rebellion, the largest slave revolt on historic record. One of the factors that led to the uprising is that the slaves had heard of other slaves who escaped to Florida and gained freedom which gave them some hope of their own freedom. They planned the revolt to take place on Sunday when planters would be occupied in church and might be unarmed. The revolt began on September 9, 1739 in South Carolina, just South of Charleston. It was the largest slave uprising on record where seven plantations were burned; 25 whites and 35 blacks were killed. The Stono Rebellion led to the establishment of what came to be known as the Security Act of 1739. The Security Act required all white males to carry firearms to church on Sunday. And penalties were placed on those who did not comply. I share that with you because we need to recognize that there is some

“We as the faith community have to ask the tough questions. Are we doing enough through our ministries to address this issue for the common good?” historic precedence in folks having guns in churches. But they were part of the militia who were assigned duty as a slave patrol. Retired Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens suggests in his new book, Six Amendments: How and Why We Should Change the Constitution, that five words be added to the Second Amendment. He says it should read: “A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, when serving in the militia, shall not be infringed.” We often talk about many of the issues we face in our society resulting from learned behaviors. Well, this in fact is a learned behavior. Because in some regards, even if we don’t have anyone publicly state it as such, those who are staunch gun enthusiasts are simply trying to get back to the core of what they have learned through the years. What we have witnessed over the past few years is the NRA, gun enthusiasts, gun lobbyists and legislators working together in an unprecedented manner. Now, in spite of the separation of church and state, the state has overstepped its bounds to impose upon the church in a manner that is detrimental to our society. Since 2012, 75 people have been killed on church or faith based properties. And many point to these numbers as a reason to expand the opportunity to carry weapons in our churches. In the past year, 21 states have enacted laws expanding gun rights. But we as faith leaders and people of good will must take a position which shows that we value life. The bible reminds us that “he who lives by the sword, will die by the sword.” And there is a great deal of

concern over the availability and access to guns that fuel this debate in our society. We’re just talking about guns in churches, but guns in general is a great moral issue that is having a major negative impact on our society at large. Chicago, New York City, St. Louis, Los Angeles, Atlanta and other cities are ripe with gun violence. We as the faith community have to ask the tough questions. Are we doing enough through our ministries to address this issue for the common good? Do we have Mental Health Ministries? Are we offering Anger Management sessions? Is the Youth Ministry relevant to what our kids are facing every day? Are we offering adequate Parenting Ministries to help parents give direction and build a value system in their homes that their kids can carry with them out in the community? Here in Georgia, legislation has removed the ban on firearms in churches unless church leaders decide to ban firearms on specific properties. The Senate amended the bill so that church leaders can “optin” if they want to give their members the option to bring guns onto the church property. Someone caught possessing a firearm in a church that bans guns would be charged with a misdemeanor and would simply have to pay a $100 fine. The legislation also allows convicted felons to claim “stand your ground status”, claiming they acted in self-defense if they use deadly force. Campus Carry legislation was dropped saying they did not want to leave that kind of decision in the hands of college presidents. But they were willing to put it in your hands as leaders of churches. One reason this legislation passed in Georgia is that the Southern Baptist Convention was a huge supporter of allowing guns in churches. The question now is how are we going to respond? Churches are now strategically placing signs at their entrance points which indicate “No Firearms Allowed,” and are in the process of amending their organizational documents, (ie…church bylaws) to specifically state that no firearms are allowed unless being carried by security personnel contracted to maintain safety and order on behalf of the congregation. It is extremely disappointing that such measures must be taken in our sacred places of worship. But these are the times and conditions that now exist. God did not give us a spirit of fear, but God has given us common sense. What are we going to do now?

We Are Called To Be Stewards

“God commanded us to work the earth and take care of it (Gen. 2:15). If we do not follow God’s commandments, ecological consequences can result.”

T

he message for this significant, yet far too brief dissertation is for each of us to assume our God ordained consecrated role for being good stewards of the earth. A steward is one who takes care of another’s property. The steward is not the owner, but has the responsibility to ensure that nothing destroys the owner’s property. God created a perfectly balanced world where humans, animals, plants and the environment all must Rev. Dr. Gerald L. Durley co-exist in perfect harmony. God created a Servant Leader world from nothing and said “Let there be light.” That light was the unity created between human kind and the environment. God commanded us to work the earth and take care of it (Gen. 2:15). If we do not follow God’s commandments, ecological consequences can result.

“Global warming or climate change affects everyone, but communities of color and poor people will suffer more from the economic and health consequences of climate change than anyone else.”

Our moral responsibility is to mend broken systems, end our dependence on fossil fuels, invest in green jobs and green technologies and rebuild our communities from the ground up. We must put an end to toxic waste and chemicals being dumped in neighborhoods where families of color live. We must engage our voices involve our congregations and send up our There is a connection between the moral world and the natural world prayers to overcome the silence and provide hope to those who are suffering (Isaiah 24: 4-5). I am asking you to read II Chonicles 7:14 where the Bible and will suffer from climate change. Many great social movements have says “If my people, who are called by my name will humble themselves grown out of the church and our search for climate justice must have the and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways then I will same intensity. hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and HEAL their land.” God demands that, as stewards, we must stand up and speak out for Climate change, global warming and environmental injustice are real environmental justice. THIS MESSAGE IS BIBLICAL AND MUST BE “contemporary” issues and the Church must become involved. We must PREACHED DAILY by the pulpit and the pew!! pray, march and demand action for local, state and federal policies that will seek protection for the most vulnerable among us and wage a just war for the next generation of God’s created creation. As Christian stewards we must ensure that our response to the climate crisis does not further perpetuate the historical injustices that have taken place in this country.

Global warming or climate change affects everyone, but communities of color and poor people will suffer more from the economic and health consequences of climate change than anyone else. Please look for more details about this important topic in subsequent articles.

CHRISTIAN DECLARATION OF POSITION REGARDING MARRIAGE 1. As a Christian, with all of my faults and shortcomings, I must look to the Bible to define what marriage is and what marriage is not. 2. Marriage according to the Bible is between a man and a woman. (Genesis 2:24 - “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.”). 3. The relationship was established by God between the first man Adam and the first woman Eve, both created by God. (Genesis 2:20 - 25). 4. Though the Bible is my guide, support for homosexual marriages cannot be found even in non-biblical sources. Every system of faith (whether it was called a religion or not) which has had any wide recognition in human history has recognized that marriage is only between men and women, never between persons of the same sex. “The first country to allow same-sex couples to enter into legally recognized marriage was the Netherlands, effective in 2001.” Wikipedia, Same-sex marriage. 5. Even when marriage has been defined to include polygamy, it was always between men and women, never between several men or several women. As shown in Wikipedia, Same-sex marriage, homosexual “marriages” is a recent invention beginning in the Netherlands in 2001. 6. Indeed the Bible is very plain, in both the old and new testament, that homosexual behavior cannot be approved. “Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.” (Leviticus 18:22). Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools; And changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things; Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishon our their own bodies between themselves: Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet. And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient. (Romans 1:22 - 26). 7. None of this is to say that homosexual behavior is the only sexual behavior unacceptable by the Bible. Sexual intercourse outside of marriage between a man and a woman is also prohibited. (Exodus 20:14 - “Thou shalt not commit adultery.”; Romans 13:9 - “...Thou shalt not commit adul tery...”). 8. At any large gathering of Christians there is likely to be many who have committed, are committing, and/or within a short period of time after that gathering will commit, adultery. Indeed David, God’s chosen servant, committed adultery. (2 Samuel 11th and 12th chapters). 9. However, there is no movement afoot to stop the Church from preaching the Biblical teachings against adultery. A very large percentage of people who have committed adultery claim to be driven by biological urges which they cannot resist. This is similar to the claims of those who advocate homosexual marriages. 10. We have all fallen and come short of the glory of God. (Romans 3:23 - “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”) This includes heterosexuals as well as homosexuals. But it is not God or the Bible that must change. We must change. 11. The fundamental message of the Christian faith as stated by Jesus is “Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.” (John 3:7). And, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16). 12. As much as I love my homosexual relatives and friends, I cannot go against God and the Bible to endorse homosexual marriage. I respect their choice to not follow the Bible in their personal lives, just as I respect the right of persons to commit adultery. 13. But my respect for a person’s right to make a private choice does not justify my endorsement of that which the Bible clearly states is wrong. It would be a violation of my conscience and my relationship with God, as well as an encouragement for others to do wrong, for which I would be responsible to my family, society in general and GOD. 14. Likewise I stand strongly opposed to any violence against those involved in homosexual behavior. Any act of violence against a person because of homosexual behavior is a sin in and of itself, as well as a crime which should and must be prosecuted. 15. It must be clearly understood that the Church must preach the gospel which includes the loving teaching to repent for all sin including homosexual behavior. (Matthew 28: 19-20 - “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen).

It is imperative that a clear statement of the position of Christians regarding this issue be put forth. “For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?” (1 Corinthians 14:8).

“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” (Ephesians 6:12).

This is not homophobia, which those who seek to silence dialogue quickly label anyone who disagrees with them. This is homolove. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16).
