OVCR Report Annual Report OVCR Annual Fiscal Year 2015 Fiscal Year 2015 Sponsored Research Sponsored Research Funding Funding This graph illustrates the growth of total sponsored research funding over eight years. The peak in FY10 of $706M is a result of ARRA stimulus funding in its first full year. In FY12, ARRA funding was negligible. After two years of decline in FY13 and FY14, total funding experienced a 15.2% increase, due mainly to increases in federal funding, notably NIH, DOD, DOE, and Army. Additionally, State/Local Government and Non-Profit funding increased from prior years.

Federal sponsorship of research continues to be an important part of the WU research portfolio. FY15 saw a reversal of the decline of federal funding to WU, with the most robust figure since FY11, which was the second full year of ARRA funding. Of the $613M of total research funding the University received, 74.6% ($457M) was received directly from federal agencies.

OVCR Report Annual Report OVCR Annual Fiscal Year 2015 Fiscal Year 2015 Sponsored Research Sponsored Research Funding Funding The success of the University’s research program depends not only on funding received from federal and other government agencies but also from private sources. Private funding is reported in two categories: Industry and Non-Profit. Industry typically includes commercial (for-profit) entities such as pharmaceutical, energy-focused, and technology companies. Non-Profit includes foundations and trusts, such as charitable organizations established by family foundations or employees of a company, and voluntary health or disease-specific agencies. It also includes individuals, hospitals, and institutes.

Funding to the four research-intensive Schools for eight fiscal years is shown below, along with Administration & Other, which includes CFUs, some Centers, and Schools with less than $1M each in funding. Decreases in any fiscal year may be attributed to the expiration of a large grant or contract or the timing of a sizable award near fiscal year end. It should be kept in mind that dollars awarded in one year may be expended over multiple subsequent years as a research project remains in progress.
