Meet the Sander Hindsgavl family from Denmark. Read how their Outwell tent opens up new experiences
W
ith a trailer in tow you cannot drive fast and cruise control set the relaxing pace that instantly got us into holiday mode. This has to be a good thing for it’s a long way from Denmark to our first site at Camping Sölden, Austria (camping-soelden.com) – a small, cosy site with a river running close by. Sölden is a popular winter ski resort and to keep the wheels in motion they have invested heavily in summer activities like mountain biking, trekking and more with a high emphasis on family enjoyment – perfect for us.
walking and little adventures. Nice treats and small breaks also took everyone’s mind off tired feet.
However, we found a single ticket with lift very expensive and when you are a family of four activities can quickly become really expensive. Luckily, the campsite sold the Oetztal-Card (premiumcard.oetztal.com/oetztal_card) − in addition to free access to all lifts in the region the card also provides entry to loads of attractions that would otherwise cost a small fortune.

Lake Idro in northern Italy was our next destination, with our eye on somewhere warmer without driving too far south. It is located in the Italian mountains about 45km north of Lake Garda, so temperatures are pleasant and the area less touristy. In fact, it was almost 30° C and the lake about 24° C, so the daily swim and beach visits were a real pleasure.
Sport Camping Rio Vantone Lago d’idro (idrosee.eu) offers great facilities and entertainment and we extended our holiday here as we had made friends with the family camping behind us. We had all our meals together and our Little Chef Cooker 3-burner was up for
the challenge, whether it was pasta or barbecue for the families. We used our awning for the first time – it provided plenty of shelter and we could easily seal off the tent when away on day-trips. The kids played in the awning while we spent evenings out front. On nice days we opened the front, leaving the tent wide open for plenty of ventilation. We even had enough space to put up a family for their last night so they could avoid packing away a wet tent in the morning! Our final stop was Bärenchslucht (baerenschlucht-camping.de) at Pottenstein − about 40km north of Nuremberg in Germany. This superb site lies next to the river and is named after the brown bears that once lived in the local caves. We found this is a fantastic area with plenty of family activities on offer and it could well become our choice stop on future journeys south. In fact, home was just a day’s trip away on the autobahn.

hat benefits do you think families can draw from outdoor life? The list is endless and I could bang on for hours and hours but to me camping isn’t all about the actual camping, it’s about finding a beautiful outdoor location that you feel happy in and you think differently when you have an entirely new set of functions to perform and there is a freedom away from the routines at home. Where is your favourite area in the UK for camping? I am always drawn back to the Lake District as it has something for everyone and the setting for The Camping and Caravanning Club Site in Keswick is breathtaking.
What is your favourite camping pastime and why? Sitting round the fire with the kids eating s’mores. What are your considerations when choosing gear? Functional, trendy and where possible environment friendly. What can’t you do without when camping? Chocolate! What is your family luxury? Anything to keep me warm! I go by the three W’s: waterproofs, warm clothes and wet wipes!

Inflatable tents have certainly lightened campsite chores by taking the strain out of pitching, but the market’s many different air systems can confuse. However, we have the solution − campers will find their distinct needs and pockets addressed in our inflatable tents by three air tube systems: Advanced Air Tube System, Power Air Tube System and Rigid Air System.
ADVANCED AIR TUBE SYSTEM
Our highly-acclaimed system provides excellent storm resistance and features our One-go Inflation Technology that allows you to plug the supplied high capacity two-way manual pump into a single inlet valve and quickly inflate the interconnected frame – no moving the pump between individual air tubes. Our optional electric pumps make light work of this slightly strenuous job.
POWER AIR TUBE SYSTEM
This has been designed to create a tent frame that is physically easier to manage by way of tubes that are inflated and deflated separately using valves that have external access. Stability is enhanced by manually placing a separate air tube along the tent ridge between the main tubes. The system balances price, ease of use and speed of pitching to suit most needs.

This is the most simple air system, comprising tubes that are inflated and deflated separately via easyaccess external valves. amping comfort is an important consideration when we design equipment and as campers we understand the importance of ground insulation to protect us from the cold and damp. So, many years ago we introduced carpets, colour-coordinated and tailored to fit individual tents. Soft-touch insulating carpet featuring a waterproof PVC backing was an Outwell innovation that campers immediately welcomed for the option to slip off shoes and socks to enjoy ‘barefoot camping’ in comfort is a particular joy, especially when you get up in the morning or when the temperature falls. Now considered by many as a camping essential, we have expanded our carpet choice and introduced our new optional Inlayzzz mats for underfoot bedroom comfort – nothing like a soft warm rug under the toes when you leave your sleeping bag!
