LETTER TO ANITA

In the late 1970s, Dr. Ronni Sanlo, a divorced mother of two who would later become Director of the UCLA LGBT Center, lost custody of her children after coming out as a lesbian. This injustice propelled her into a life of LGBT activism. Narrated by award-winning actress Meredith Baxter, LETTER TO ANITA explores the painful legacy of singer Anita Bryant’s infamous “Save Our Children” campaign. A devastating personal letter to Bryant serves as the heart of this riveting documentary, which details the unjust ramifications of anti–gay parenting legislation. OUT IN THE NIGHT

Dir/Scr: Blair Doroshwalther, 2013, USA, 75 min.

In 2006, seven African American lesbians were enjoying an evening in Manhattan’s West Village when one of them was sexually harassed by a young man. The women defended their friend and left the man hospitalized with a minor injury. Quickly, the women were labeled “lesbian gang members” and eventually given severe prison sentences. OUT IN THE NIGHT takes on this nightmarish case, teeming with racial and sexual prejudice. The result is both harrowing and inspirational.
