We would like to welcome you to Trans Awareness Week 2015. November 13– 20 individuals and organizations around the country will participate Transgender Awareness Week to help raise the visibility of transgender and gender non-conforming people, and address the issues these communities face. The final day of Transgender Awareness Week is the Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR), an annual observance on November 20 that honours the memory of those whose lives were lost in acts of antitransgender violence. Whether you are a local or visiting Bristol for the first time this guide alongside the website www.outbristol.co.uk has all you need to know about this event, the scene, the city and the other four LGBT festivals we host in the city through out the year.

Trans/Form Exhibition 13 -23 Nov www.outbristol.co.uk This is the first event by Trans/Forms, which is a new project by Bristol based artist Chris Hubley to give a platform for transgender and transsexual artists to showcase their work. The aim is to create an alternative to the mainstream narrative around trans people. The project is being launched with a series of events including art, performance and live art at Hamilton House created in collaboration with CoResist. This series of events are leading up to Transgender day of Remembrance on November 20th, which is a day on which we remember the trans people from around the world who have lost their lives through transphobic violence. Curator, Chris Hubley said: “We created this project because, despite the rising visibility of trans people in recent months, the mainstream media narrative is still very narrow and very often relies on cliche and stereotypes when talking about us. It often ignores those in the community who are most marginalised. There is a need to create space for those people who don’t fit this narrative and to show the many multiple ways that trans identities manifest. To this end, we are showcasing the exciting and powerful art that comes from these communities, and creating new narratives through self representation. “For the last few years Bristol has hosted events for Trans day of Remembrance which are intended for trans people, their friends, family and allies, so I wanted to create something alongside these which was also about engaging with the wider community. “We are very excited to be bringing this amazing array of talent to Hamilton House, this is the first time something like this has happened in Bristol and hopefully there will be much more in the future.” Venue: Hamilton House 80 Stokes Croft, BS1 3QY Bristol, Price: Free

These vividly coloured, larger than life paintings of his genitals are confrontational and celebratory. Through them he explores and expresses his sexuality and how far he’s come since he first transitioned ten years ago. Chris will also be facilitating a piece called “Say Their Names: a co created memorial for transgender day of remembrance”, in which visitors will be invited to create a flower bearing the name of a transgender person who lost their life in the last year as a result of transphobic violence and add it to a growing memorial wall.

“Boi Becomes Hare” is a series of small intimate expressive pencil abstractions on handmade paper that explore my ambivalence about the conventional “trans narrative” and the way that I fit into such a narrative as a transgender man of colour. Combining the image of the hare and scratchy, immediate imperfect drawings of myself works as means to displace and disorder the traditional Western idea of “transformation,” and as a way to envision the different, unexpected, radical and more expansive ways that the trans trajectory might grow away from socially expected Western cultural and neoliberal mass media circulated images that reassert binary gender norms and restrictions.’

Exhibit Date: 13-23 Nov 2015 Country of Origin: UK Media : Visual Art Rating: Contains Nudity Venue: Hamilton House 80 Stokes Croft, BS1 3QY Price: Free Raju Rage’s current project ‘kink, culture, conflict’ explores how rubber and its material and colonial history connect to modern day kink/sensual/sexual practices as forms of cultural bondage and rites. Inspired by Anjali Arondekar’s ‘For the Record: On Sexuality and the Colonial Archive in India’ and a recent collaboration in a photoshoot with fierce photographer Ajamu. Raju is building this work into a live sculptural performance focusing on sexuality and gender in necropolitical times which will be performed as a work in progress. Raju Rage’s work focuses on exploring, o ccupying and performing race, ethnicity, gender and queerness. Specifically, the way ‘South Asian’ queer gender non-conforming people have to navigate and negotiate their bodies in a western world where there is often a conflict between defining and expressing complex identities.
