24.10.2012 Clockers

1995, US, Director: Spike Lee

Based on the riveting bestseller by Richard Price, this 1995 crime drama was directed by Spike Lee with such authority and authenticity that it has the hyperreal quality of a stylised documentary. The film focuses on Strike, a young, ambitious “clocker”- or drug dealer - who works the streets of his New York housing project, selling drugs for a local supplier named Rodney. Just as Strike is struggling to get away from his dead-end life of crime, another dealer is murdered in a fast-food restaurant and local detectives consider Strike the primary suspect.

29.10.2012 Salute

2008, Australia, Director: Matt Norman

The picture of the three men on the winner’s podium after the men’s 200 metre final at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics is still considered one of the most powerful images in modern history. Salute tells the true story behind this iconic image, the story of American athletes Tommie Smith, John Carlos and the Australian silver medallist Peter Norman - three Olympic competitors who, in one peaceful but inflammatory moment of political protest as they received their medals on the podium at the 1968 games in Mexico City, would destroy their sporting careers and become a seminal and enduring symbol of the Civil Rights struggle.

31.10.2012 Adulthood

2008, UK, Director: Noel Clarke

After six years in prison for killing Trife, Sam Peel (writer/director Noel Clarke) is released to face the guilt and pain caused by his crime. Before he can rebuild his life, there’s something he has to face first... those seeking revenge. In a desperate race against his past, the next 24 hours could be the longest of his life, as well as his last. Sam is about to go from kidulthood to adulthood... if he survives.

Jak Flash

Fashion, Editorial, Hair and Beauty Photographer / Mute Media / www.mutemedia.co.uk The launch of our new culture section, where we interview people involved in the art and culture industries, gain insights into their work and get to enjoy their personal selections of their work. This issue we interview Jak Flash from Jak Flash Photography whose portfolio of diverse work covers many areas of the industry. Where do you get your inspiration from ? Jak says:I draw my inspiration from many different sources but for me the most important source of inspiration when doing something creative is yourself. I always look back into my past, and remember the different things that make me who I am and then I try and push those ideas upon the work that I create. I think about the relationships I had with my friends as a child, and falling in love for the first time, which as a young gay man, is often your straight best friend at the time. This can often be a destructive first love so it holds a well of emotions to draw creative influence from. This particular memory actually forms the basis of a lot of my projects and when learning about myself I was able to see that a lot of the different films and stories I like focus on similar relationships, such as Fight Club, Akira and Tekkon Kinkreet.

Culture: What kind of camera do you use? Jak says: I use a Canon 500d at the moment or a 5D but I don’t really mind what camera I use because with my work it’s mostly about capturing the idea. I’ve never been big into cameras or lenses. I don’t really know much about them to be honest and I’ve had the same camera since university. How important are personal projects to you ? Jak says: Personal projects are a vital part of my creative life because they allow for self-exploration and expression. A lot of my personal projects are self portraits based on visual transformation. Seeing what it is like to become someone or something else for a brief moment in time. I’ve never felt like I was human, but more like I’m trapped in a human body so I used makeup and photography to explore that and try and represent how I feel on the inside through creative means.

Culture:

How much preparation goes into a shoot? Jak says: I prep my shoots a lot because I like them to have a clear idea behind them. I’ll do a lot of research into what the images should be about. Then you have to consider styling, makeup, positioning, composition, models and props. There’s a lot to do but it often means you get to work with some really great people along the way. Working in the photography industry is all about working in great teams. I did a project for SHOUT festival, which is an LGBT arts festival where I created an image based on my vision of my love life. It was based on a painting by Edward Burne-Jones called Cupid’s hunting field. I had to explore various ideas to come to the conclusion it would be based around that painting and then I had to restructure it to become my image. This involved creating a set, buying props such as wings, moths, horns and roses. I used 6 models all together and set the image up to tell a story of the varying stages of love. These included falling in love, love messing with you head, desperate for love and past love.

Culture:

How much do you do in post production? Jak says: Post production in my work is really important because my images are about capturing an idea. So using post production is just one of the necessary steps in the journey. My pictures aren’t about the models, or portraying their natural look, it’s about actualising what I had in mind. A lot of people have very negative opinions about post production and the use of ‘air brushing’ especially in the media but I don’t think everyone really understands it’s purpose. It’s nothing new, its been happening for thousands of years. You don’t see ancient Greek statues with spots.

Culture:

Do you think a photographer needs a philosophy to do good work ? Jak says: There are so many varying types of photography so it’s all about your intention. There are image takers and image makers. I’m an image maker, so for me it’s important to be able to construct a valid idea that communicates something. I use my work to explore myself, and creating images is opening a dialogue with people without using words. So my philosophy is to explore who you are and what your life is about. During a project based on Tarot Cards I came up with a kind of mantra that always keeps me focused ‘It is the right of man to give meaning to that which has none’. Sight of Sound

Exhibition Runs:13th Sep - 11th Nov 2012 / View Art Gallery / www.viewartgallery.co.uk Sight of Sound – where visual art is influenced by, and integrated, with music. This innovative exhibition explores how music and sound influences the visual arts. The show features a diverse group of artwork by local and international artists whose creativity has been taken to new dimensions:

Sound and vision is integrated in the installations of two innovative artists: Kathy Hinde’s ‘Music Box Migrations’ uses images to create sound while Will Kendrick’s ‘Light Art’ reverses the process by producing sound-stimulated images. Musicians also crossover to the visual arts: the sketches of Faris Badwan gives an insight into his visual thoughts whilst touring as the lead vocalist of the renowned band ‘The Horrors’. Painter and pianist Jimmy Galvin contributes new music-inspired artwork and a soundtrack for the exhibition, including live music. Icons of contemporary music influence the work of three artists with unique styles: Annemarie Wright uses the lyrics of famous musicians to create deeply sensitive portraits. Paul Oz uses rock stars as the subject of lusciously layered paintings with expression that leaps from the canvas. Ed Chapman captures both musical and personal expression in his mosaic portraits.

The artistic practice of ‘album’ covers heavily influences two artists’ work: Suzanne Partridge exhibits a part of her ’200 album covers’ collection, where original paintings began life as unique individual record sleeves. Critically acclaimed artist Gregory Euclide has had international success with artwork for the band Bon Iver and his new work brings those designs to life. Sight of Sound takes us on a symphonic journey that stimulates multiple senses.

I am out to my colleagues and officers of the council. I feel I have a duty to represent LBGT issues to my colleagues. The Lord Mayor of Bristol’s Children Appeal 2012 The Rt. Hon. The Lord Mayor of Bristol, Councillor Peter Main will be officially launching the 2012 appeal at a press reception at The Mansion House on October 16th when he will outline the objectives of the appeal and details of 2 fundraising events: The appeal dinner being held at Maaza Namaskar Lounge on November 5th and the Annual Carol Concert at The Colston Hall on December 12th in association with The Post. The Appeal originated in the 1920’s when it was known as the Lord Mayor’s Fund, and the money raised was used originally to provide Christmas dinners and boots for poor children. Now, needy families receive vouchers that can be redeemed for food, toys and clothing at Christmas. This year’s target is to raise in excess of £60,000, in order to help approximately 1,750 underprivileged children in Bristol. The nomination of the children and the distribution of the vouchers is managed through the Children and Young People’s Services, Social Care Division, City of Bristol, who undertake to vet all applications. Administrative costs of the Appeal are covered by the committee, enabling every penny collected to be passed on to the children. Please join other Out Bristol readers in helping to make this Christmas season more cheerful than it might otherwise be for so many of our local needy children.
