Feature World Stage Festival An Interview with World Stage Festival Director Colin Gorrie, Bristol Boy brings a World of Performing Arts to Bristol. So Colin, how come a Canadian architect has wound up in the South West of England, running Bristol's newest international festival of the performing arts? "Yes, it is a funny picture isn't it? But I am a Bristol boy originally I left to go to Canada as a young adult and yes it's true I'm an architect by training, but designing theatres sidetracked me into the arts. I've worked as a director and festival producer in Canada for many years, so it's great to bring something back to the city where I grew up, after so long away". What was your thinking behind adding another festival to Bristol's busy festival calendar? "When I came back to live in Bristol, I looked around and saw that there wasn't really a similar type of festival in England that had the format of the Canadian festivals I had been running. Bristol, like many other cities in England has many fabulous community based arts festivals, but nothing of this format that promises the best from around the world for younger audiences. So I approached Arts Council England (ACE) and suggested it was something that was lacking. In December, I heard they'd offered a grant".

Feature World Stage Festival "Our aspiration for World Stage is that over the next few years it becomes known as an opportunity for people making shows and for young audiences to see new work and meet other practitioners. We also want to increase the media exposure and contacts for companies working in this area. Long term this can have a positive effect on careers through professional development and access to the industry". Six months is a pretty short timeframe for such an undertaking, isn't it? "You bet! But we wanted to have an established event ready for 2012. So this is the pilot year, Because of my international contacts, putting the program together at short notice, but raising the funds is a challenge".

Is World Stage a children's or young audiences' festival? "It's a festival for all audiences. It has something to offer anybody and everybody. The purpose in some ways is to show that world class performing arts is entertaining for everyone, regardless of age. If a show has quality it shouldn't define the audience. Communicating age appropriateness is a useful marketing tool: A show like Little Mysteries from Italy at The Arnolfini is tailor made for the very young, but its rapturous reception around Europe has already proved that people of any age can enjoy its spell".

Feature World Stage Festival Why do you think that people in this economic climate should spend money on coming to World Stage? "We all need entertaining when the economy is in a down turn. This festival offers the chance for people across the South West to come to Bristol and sample great entertainment from international performers specially flown in from around the world. Audiences can try varied practical creative workshops led by local artists and enjoy free, daylong street and local entertainment in the relaxed environment of Anchor Square. A ticket to World Stage is inexpensive given what's on offer, as we've managed to keep most tickets at ÂŁ6.50, which means that both new and young audiences don't miss out". "We've also made a commitment to distribute 15 per cent of all tickets free to students from schools where there may be economic and social hardship, as a way to further our mission of showcasing high quality performing arts to the widest possible audience".

Which shows are you most excited about? "I have to say I'm pretty pleased with the overall balance of large scale events and more intimate live arts experiences inthe programme for our first festival.

Feature World Stage Festival The line-up is quite startling in the way it brings together dance, music and theatre and I'm excited that it includes three companies from North America who are coming to England for the first time. Step Afrika! promise to raise the roof on Colston Hall where New York-based Mayhem Poets, will also be a rare treat in Slam Poetry. Ache Brasil join us from Canada with their jaw-dropping acrobatic skill and Les Voisins, a French group, are going to mesmerize younger audiences with their blend of live painting and shadow puppetry. From Scotland, Puppet State Theatre have received global recognition for their humorous and thought provoking piece and Teatro Kismet are tried and tested masterful tellers of tales. I'm excited about all the shows". So, how would you sum up World Stage Festival? "Four days in Bristol of world class world entertainment for everyone, wherever they live, whatever their age". World Stage Festival lands in Bristol New Bristol International Performing Arts Festival brings Music, Dance and Theatre from Canada, France, Italy and the USA. w elcome to world stage. a world of great shows on your doorstep. ”

We invite you to come with us this summer and enjoy some of the most exciting and affordable performances currently packing the World Stage, without ever leaving your city. We’ve put together a global festival of world-class shows, geared to audiences of all ages. Because we believe that the best in the performing arts should be good for all of us, however old our years or wherever we call home, and that you should be able to afford a ticket! We can’t wait for you to experience the world of dance, percussion, puppetry, live animation, theatre and circus on offer this July. You can also brush up on your own creativity in action packed workshops, led by artists who will be sharing their skills and helping you to grasp fresh ones. Because there are times when we all have the need to play and learn and give something new a go. We are hugely grateful to the Arts Council England, Bristol City Council, The Canada Council and the US Embassy, plus the city’s arts venues and, most importantly the artists from near and far, who have all made our very first festival possible. We want to have a long lasting relationship with young, new and established artists and audiences beyond our launch year of 2011, so we’ll be back again each summer to build new global links and bring a cultural feast of world excellence to everyone in Bristol and the South West. Top notch entertainment at rock bottom prices! I look forward to seeing you at World Stage. Colin Gorrie Artistic Producer
