Cervical Screening Survey 2012 The Lesbian & Gay Foundation is exploring the experiences, knowledge and behaviour of Lesbian and Bisexual (LB) women, towards cervical screening to understand how they engage with health screening services and whether access to services is equitable. The research is funded by the Department of Health. If you agree to participate we are asking you to take 5-10 minutes to complete a survey to gather information about your current behaviour, knowledge and experiences of cervical screening. If you wish to be involved further then you can provide us with an email address at the end of the survey and we will contact you in the future, send you a follow-up survey to complete and maybe invite you to take part in an interview. LGF are exploring the experiences, knowledge and behaviour of lesbian and bisexual (LB) women outside the North West, towards cervical screening. Feature: Bristol Folk Festival The Bristol Folk Festival returns to Colston Hall bringing with it some of the biggest names in folk music. As well as up to 40 top musical performers, the festival will feature Morris dancers, mummers and maypoles, ceilidhs, workshops, singalong sessions, a market and posh loos! In a new move, Bristol Folk Festival is to present Brit nominated singer songwriter Newton Faulkner at the city’s O2 Academy as part of its three-day May Bank Holiday event.
Feature: Bristol Folk Festival The Festival, which returned to the city last year after 32 years, has staged all its events at the Colston Hall to date. But a new diversion this year will see the busy Colston programme augmented with events at the O2 Academy, with Faulkner as the flagship act on Saturday, May 5. Surrey-born Faulkner, with his trademark red dreadlocks, shot to prominence in 2007 when his debut album Hand Built by Robots rocketed up the charts to No 1 and went double platinum in the UK, triggering singles “Dream Catch Me” and “Teardrop” (a cover of the Massive Attack track). The Line Up hightlights Saturday 5th May 2012 Show of Hands 2010 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards double winners, Show of Hands, return to the Bristol Folk Festival in a year that will see Steve Knightley and Phil Beer celebrating 20 years of their incredible partnership that has put them right at the top of British folk. Together with regular double bass player Miranda Skyes, singer-songwriter Knightly and multi instrumental wizard Beer will mark their milestone year with a fourth return to the Royal Albert Hall next Easter before heading to Bristol to headline the festival’s first day on Saturday May 5. Karine Polwart A passionate and perceptive performer and a fine singer-songwriter, Karine, as Word Magazine says, “takes the heart to places few singers even know exist.” She has just released her first DVD Where Tomorrow Starts and will be showcasing tracks from her fifth studio album at Bristol, just ahead of its Summer 2012 release. Image David Angel Rua Macmillan Together with his Trio (Tia Files on guitar and Adam Briwon on bodhran), feted young Scottish Highland fiddler Rua Macmillan will be getting festival goers on their feet on the opening Saturday when he whips up a storm of a festival ceilidh, before his mainstage appearance. Rua will also be running the ever popular after Ceilidh as well. ahab have been described as “the most exciting harmony-infused Americana/pop outfit to emerge on the scene since Mumford & Sons”. Since their appearance at Fairport’s Cropredy Convention in 2010 with their outstanding songs and girl appeal, ahab have fast become a hot favourite on the festival circuit.

The Line Up hightlights Saturday 5th May 2012 Ewan McLennan The winner of several awards including the 2011 BBC Radio 2 Horizon Award, Ewan McLennan is an emerging folk artist that has been making headlines. His music combines traditional folk, with an inevitable focus on the music of Scotland, as well as his own selfpenned songs that are receiving critical acclaim in their own right. His guitar playing, described as ‘stunning’, is influenced by the rigour and technique from his years of studying classical guitar, while retaining a unique and compelling sound in which his immersion in folk music is evident. Blair Dunlop has already fitted a lot into his young life. From an early age he was encouraged to take to the stage by his parents. He has now blossomed into a greatly admired singer, guitarist and actor. Some of the highlights of his performing career include playing Little Willy Wonka in the blockbuster movie of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” (Johnny Depp starred as the grown-up Willy), touring for the whole of last Autumn in a new production of the play “Lark Rise” and appearing at festivals such as Big Session, Towersey and Cropredy. O`Hooley & Tiddow are the chamber-folk duo behind The Fragile, their genre-defying new album on the No Masters label. Their debut Silent June, was one of MOJO Magazine’s Top 10 Folk Albums of 2010. The duo’s beautifully unusual songs touch on everything from dark folk tales, ecology and cross-dressing historical figures through to the invisibility of the elderly and the global economy. 2012 sees them touring the country with their irrestible blend of thought-provoking song, striking arrangements, sublime harmonies and cheeky Northern banter.

The Line Up hightlights Saturday 5th May 2012 Luke Jackson is a young Roots singer-songwriter from Canterbury, Kent and has been performing live since the age of 13. Over the past 2 years Luke has opened for many great artists including Miranda Sykes & Rex Preston, Megson, Little Johnny England, Lucy Ward, Boo Hewerdine, Martyn Joseph, Steve Knightley, Show of Hands, Chris Wood and Paul Brady amongst others. Luke’s debut EP ‘Run & Hide’, available from the website, iTunes and gigs, was released in July 2011, generating a lot of interest in his songwriting, voice and playing. He also had a great summer of festivals, including Abbotsbury Festival with Show of Hands, Sidmouth Folk Festival and Greenbelt and ended the year at a packed Folk in the Barn in December opening for Martyn Joseph.
Sam Sweeney Sam Sweeney has been playing the fiddle since he was six and he now plays and teaches the instrument. Since 2002 Sweeney has been at the forefront of East Midlands-based folk band Kerfuffle, playing fiddle, viola, cajon, and singing. In 2009 Sam released Catches and Glees with new duo Hannah James and Sam Sweeney. Sam is also a member of the award winning big folk band Bellowhead as of 2008. As of 2009 he tours with Jon Boden and the Remant Kings where he sometimes plays drums and fiddle simultaneously. Sam has also been part of the Fay Hield’s new album and, along with Rob Harbron, tours with Hield.
Dyer:Cumming’s are an exciting Ceilidh and Concert band based in the southwest of England who have now been together for around 5 years. They play traditional English folk music with their own funky and youthful twist which is achieved by the unique mix of instruments merged with fun and energetic arrangements. They have been called a new uprising of Folk Fusion.

The Line Up hightlights Saturday 5th May 2012 Miranda Sykes and Rex Preston Miranda’s rich, spine tingling vocals and strident yet sensitive double bass playing are much in demand and she enjoys working alongside some of the finest musicians in the world. Increasingly in demand both as a double bassist and singer and has worked with Pressgang, Robb Johnson, Firebrand, Steafan Hannigan, Leon Rosselson, Bill Jones, Roger Wilson, Alan Burke, Kirsty McGee, Jenny Crook, Reg Meuross and Little Johnny England; and has toured throughout the United Kingdom, North America, Canada and Europe. Rex Preston was last seen on the folk & acoustic scene when his band Jane on Thunder reached the final of The BBC Young Folk Awards. Since then he has been building a strong portfolio of electronic music.
The Line Up highlights Sunday 6th May 2012 Cara Dillon Honey-voiced Dillon- and guests to be announced- will be the headline act at the revived three-day festival on Sunday, May 6. Cara is also patron of Bristol Folk Festival’s sister event, the inaugral Frome Festival, which took place in her Somerset hometown in February. Born in County Kerry in 1975, she is a spellbinding performer who has been described as “one of the best Irish female singers of all time.”
Moore, Moss and Rutter are a trio of young musicians from around England. They play mainly traditional English, contemporary and self composed tunes, but obtain influence from numerous styles and traditions. Tom Moore (Norfolk) plays fiddle, Archie Churchill moss (Somerset) plays melodeon and Jack Rutter (Yorkshire) plays guitar and sings.
The Young’uns With bags of charm, talent, and an abiding enthusiasm for traditional song, The Young’uns are making a big impact on the UK folk scene. Sean Cooney, David Eagle and Michael Hughes bring freshness and dynamism to their arrangements of close harmony songs, both with and without accompaniment. Everything from traditional sea and working songs to more recent compositions is present in their repertoire, and is delivered with originality and flair. They are effortlessly entertaining, with an irreverent sense of humour that always engages the audience.

The Line Up highlights Sunday 6th May 2012 Gilmore Roberts BBC Radio 2 Horizon Award nominees Katriona Gilmore & Jamie Roberts combine astounding lap-tapping guitar, fiery fiddle and their trademark harmonies with considerable songwriting talent to make a truly distinctive sound. Aside from their work together, both Katriona and Jamie are in high demand as session musicians and have played on several acclaimed albums. Katriona has previously toured as part of Tiny Tin Lady and with Rosie Doonan’s Snapdragons and recently joined the newly reformed Albion Band, while Jamie has played with young English traditionalists Kerfuffle since 2007.
Phillip Henry & Hannah Martin Recently described as, “authentic, haunting roots music from a first class duo” (Seth Lakeman), Phillip Henry and Hannah Martin are two musicians with a fast growing following on the folk and roots scene. Having just completed two tours with Show Of Hands, they have been receiving very warm reviews of their début album, Singing The Bones, including selection for a fRoots magazine compilation; and airplay. Fast becoming recognised as one of the finest slide guitarists the UK has produced, Phillip Henry is also a virtuoso on the harmonica. Maggie Boyle with Paul Downes Maggie Boyle is a traditional singer. Through her ballads, old and new, she continues the tradition of music and storytelling passed on by her Irish family. Now living in Yorkshire, she was born in London where she sang and played from an early age. Reared in the musically vibrant London-Irish community of the 60s and 70s, she and her brothers got the music from their father. Paddy Boyle was a native speaker from the Donegal Gaeltacht townland of Derryloughan, Nr Glenties. Her other main tutor was Oliver Mulligan, a great singer from Co. Monaghan, resident in London.

Tim Ashton, Athene Roberts and Lukas Drinkwater juggle an array of world music influences with an insatiable joie de vivre. In 2011 the band appeared at Glastonbury, headlined festivals in Holland, Belgium and Germany and were voted Best Live Act in the 2011 Spiral Awards. Mawkin Having gained a name for themselves in the festival circuit as a hardworking live band playing at over 50 festivals in the past 4 years, last year supporting Show of Hands, Eliza Carthy and Shooglenifty on their tours. Mawkin released their debut album “The Fair Essex” last September which has received brilliant reviews including a 4 star review from MOJO who described it as “Unconditionally Mighty”. Synopsis Another Country tells the stories of artists, mainly in New York, struggling to love and be loved amid the complexities of racism, sexism, and homophobia. James Baldwin divided the novel into three parts. Published in 1962, this is an emotionally intense novel of love, hatred, race and liberal America in the 1960s. Set in Greenwhich Village, Harlem and France, ANOTHER COUNTRY tells the story of the suicide of jazz-musician Rufus Scott and the friends who search for an understanding of his life and death, discovering uncomfortable truths about themselves along the way. About the Author James Baldwin Born in Harlem in 1924, Baldwin had an early career as a teenage preacher. He lived in Paris from 1948-1956 and his first novels, the autobiographical GO TELL IT ON THE MOUNTAIN and GIOVANNI’S ROOM established him as a promising novelist and anticipated some of the themes of his later works, such as racism and sexuality. He became a prominent spokesperson for racial equality, especially during the civil rights movement. He lived in France during his last years. Baldwin died in 1987.

Pop sensation The Wanted will perform a West Country concert this Summer at Westonbirt Arboretum. This is the final act to be announced at the venue as part of Forestry Commission Live Music 2012. Just 18 months since their huge Number One debut single ‘All Time Low’, The Wanted has already become one of Britain’s biggest, most brilliant pop bands, living a dream that has far surpassed even their most optimistic expectations. Music by Tchaikovsky A New Adventures Production Full casting is announced for Matthew Bourne’s NUTCRACKER!, which returns to Sadler’s Wells this Christmas to celebrate the production’s 20th Anniversary with a limited seven week run from Tuesday 6 December 2011 - Sunday 22 January 2012, as well as touring extensively throughout the UK (tour schedule attached). New dates are also added, with the tour now playing Dublin Grand Canal Theatre (Tuesday 8 – Saturday 12 May 2012) and Newcastle Theatre Royal (Tuesday 15 – Saturday 19 May 2012). Christmas 2011 marks another special anniversary, as New Adventures returns to Sadler’s Wells for a 10th consecutive Christmas Season. The English poet John Donne once wrote, “No man is an island entire of itself�. This assertion has never faced a more literal challenge however than through the story of Haney Ameer. Mr Ameer lives on the outskirts of Mas-ha just outside of Qalqiliya in the West Bank. Back in 2003 his house was situated on the path of the proposed separation barrier, 80% of which is built on Palestinian land. When he refused to leave his house and his land the Israeli government decided to build the barrier around him. His house is now surrounded on all four sides by either walls, fences or the separation barrier. He lives in what looks like a high security prison except he now holds the keys for the one small gate that provides access to his property. On one side of his house is the 8 meter high concrete separation barrier that scars the landscape for as far as the eye can see. All over the wall there is battle between local graffiti artists and the Israeli Defence Force’s (IDF) censoring white paint. On the other side of his house there is an illegal Israeli settlement which is cut off from him by a barbed wire fence. Flanking each end of his property are locked security gates leading to the military road that track the separation barrier. He is hemmed into his small plot of land on all sides. On the approach to his house our driver and translator rings ahead for him to come and meet us. We pull up alongside the 8 meter high concrete slabs to walk the last few meters. Next to the barrier there is a small rusted metal door from where Mr Ameer emerges. Between 2003 and 2006 he lived in his property not owning these keys to access his own property. For three years he relied on the IDF to let him through the security gate each day to return to his own property. It was not uncommon in those days for friends to throw food parcels over the wall so he could feed his wife and children.
Politics: Commentary We sit outside his broken and bruised property in the fading evening sun. He explains he cannot fix any of the broken windows, crumbling walls or holes in the roof as he cannot get a permit off the Israelis to ‘build’ on his own land. I ask him if he ever considered leaving. He responds with a story of isolation and incredible courage which is characterised by a lack of options. The Israelis offered him a lot of money and a chance to rebuild a bigger and better house on more land wherever he wanted in return for his land. He refused. Why he refused is a mixture of a connection to a family home that has been with him for years, and a slightly more harsh reality. The Palestinians who lived nearby warned him that if he sold up to the Israelis he would no longer be considered a ‘Palestinian’, he would be isolated. An ironic threat given his circumstances. Regardless of his motives, Mr Ameer now finds himself in a physical limbo, not on either side of the separation barrier. He insists that if he could turn back the clock then he would do nothing differently. I ask what he hopes for the future and he bleakly responds, “nothing, I will die like this”. This response sends a shiver down my spine as I realise that this is quite possible. The occupation has come to a point where a family can be living in 60 by 40 meter virtual quarantine and the world does not bat an eyelid. Mr Ameer has the look of a man who has told his story a million times before. He sits back in his chair as if this is a day to day occurrence for people all around the world as he recalls the details of his isolation. I wonder whether this is just his way of dealing with what is an unimaginable daily infringement on his personal liberty. The meeting comes to a close and he walks us back to the rusted metal gate. Unlocking the padlock he looks up at the separation barrier and then at the floor. His body forgets what he is doing for a brief moment but his hands are still unlocking the door they have unlocked everyday for the last 6 years. We leave him on the other side of the barrier. I cannot decide whether I have extreme admiration for this man, or if I just want to shake him by the scruff of the neck and tell him to move with his family to a new house. I suspect if I did the latter, he would sit me down, light a cigarette and tell me to not be so impatient. I am impatient though, I don’t want to think of this man sitting in his house, his virtual prison, until the day dies. There has to be an alternative ending to this tragic story. The occupation restricts peoples movement, freedoms and lives on a day to day basis. Mr Ammer’s story is unique only because of his physical proximity to the separation barrier. Haney Ameer will sleep tonight though knowing no one can tell him to leave his family house, not the IDF and certainly not a foreign human rights monitor like myself.
Bristol celebrates International Women’s Day A week of events marking International Women’s Day Monday, March 5) is taking place in Bristol including an exhibition, a workshop, a well-being day and creative projects. The week gets under way with a conference at the Watershed tomorrow, Wednesday, March 7 on Employment and Education: a Fair Deal for Women. It continues with a women’s health and well-being day staged by Bristol Drugs Project which will also include activities such as arts and crafts and dance. Halos Café Bar, Gloucester Road, will host an informal evening of music, food and speakers, including Sandra Rojas, community activist and Fairtrade sesame producer from Nicaragua. Also on Thursday 8, women from diverse communities in Bristol will stage a documentary play at the Malcolm X Centre which is based on interviews with seven extraordinary women activists. The play will be shown twice on the day.. The Showroom, Park Street, will host free workshops on the theme of self-portraiture, while Hannah More Primary School will host a day of creative fun. Bringing the week’s celebrations to a close will be a guided tour of Arnos Vale Cemetery and the memorials to some of Bristol’s ‘wonderful women’ and the contributions they made from Victorian times through to the mid 20th century. And on Saturday, March 24, the new Bristol Women’s Voice organisation will launch with an opportunity to see the new Bristol Women’s Voice website which will have information on events, activities and organisations that support women, as well as a blog and forums enabling views on issues affecting women to be shared. Councillor Guy Poultney, Cabinet member for Neighbourhoods and Equalities said: “This important day provides an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women, and the contribution so many women have made. “It provides a space to focus on the problems of inequality that women still face, how these can best be addressed, and ensuring we recognise and understand the contribution that the female perspective makes in shaping a better future for us all.” Further information is available on the Bristol City Council website at http://www. bristol.gov.uk/page/international-women%E2%80%99s-day-2012

The Bristol Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Forum (LGBT Bristol) is looking for new Management Committee members. We are looking for people with a passion for and committment to LGBT rights, willing to put their skills, creativity, intelligence, flair and confidence to work. Help us continue to challenge homophobia and make Bristol a City that welcomes LGBT people. You would be working with other Management Committtee members and staff to serve our Membership and LGBT communities in the City. In the 18 years since the Forum came into existence, and 8 years after it became an independent Charity, there is still much left to do to consolidate the rights of LGBT people. The local PCT, Constabulary, Fire Service and other major service providers regularly consult us on a wide range of issues and our influence gives a voice to LGBT people within both, the Equalities Team and other departments of Bristol City Council. One of the major outcomes of our work has been the Authority’s rapid advancement in the Stonewall Workplace Equality List (41st) and, following three years’ lobbying by us and other LGBT groups, it has joined the Stonewall Education Champions Programme, following intense lobbying by the Forum on action against homophobic bullying in Bristol schools. Our current projects include developing anti-bullying policy and practice in primary education and promoting universal inclusion of trangender, as well as older and disabled LGBT people. We have funding for 20012/13 and will be submitting our bid for the following 3 years, in July, but we are committed to developing new strategies to help us remain financially viable in the changing landscape of Charity funding and at this difficult time of cuts and austerity. We are asking members of the LGBT community to join us and leave their legacy in our brilliant, vibrant City, and help put it on the map as an LGBT destination of international calibre.
