Feature: International Bristol Bristol and the West of England is always a busy place but in the summer months festival madness takes over the city and August is no exception as this month sees Bristol take centre stage in the international calender. The first of these landmark events is the See No Evil event on the 20th August 2011 which will see Bristol’s cityscape change for ever as top international urban artists decend on to Nelson Street. Bristol invites you to ‘See No Evil’
Bristol will play host to the most ambitious permanent urban art project ever to take place in Europe this summer. Some of the world’s leading street artists will be taking over an entire street in the heart of the city to paint the facades of ten buildings as part of a new event called ‘See No Evil’. Bristol has long been known for its urban art movement in the UK, being the home of Banksy, a host of other famous artists and now a project that will see some of the world’s largest scale paintings ever created. Over twenty internationally renowned artists will take up residency on Nelson Street this summer to paint ten huge buildings, followed by a street party on 20th August celebrating the best of Bristol’s art and music culture.

Event organiser and celebrated urban artist Inkie explains; “We have spent nearly 12 months negotiating and planning this major project, which will be the jewel in the crown of the city’s already buzzing art scene. We have invited some of the world’s most talented graffiti artists to bring their skills to city, and we have a number of returning Bristolians to head up proceedings. “Nothing of this size and scale has ever taken place in the UK and it’s an event that has captured the minds of some the world’s most respected street artists. It’s a major coup that we’ve managed to pull this off in Bristol.” Organisers are keeping the exact line up of artists close to their chests but already announced include Tats Cru, a New York based muralists who last visited Bristol to paint in the 80’s and whose aerosol based work is dubbed to have ‘changed the perception of graffiti as art’. LA based artist El Mac whose work is prolific across every continent will also bring his photorealistic painting style to Bristol, alongside Shoe, a Holland based artist who was the muse of many original graffiti writers. Local graffiti legend Mr Jago will be joined by a number of Bristol based artists putting their mark on their home city. Brian Lloyd Jones, regional asset manager at UNITE Group, which owns one of the buildings set to be painted, said: “We’re thrilled to be involved with this urban art project. Nelson Street is a gem in the heart of the city and this project will really help to regenerate the area. It’s exciting to be involved with something which will attract tourism to Bristol, and further cement our reputation as a leading European city in the urban art movement.”

To mark this special occation the fiesta will be hosting a special area within the event so the vistors can see how a ballon is made. The event wll also have many of its favorites such as the famous night glow and fireworks
The event this year is focusing on all things local which will help showcase our amazing city to the world. This will include the entertainment arena which will have many local acts ready to entertain. One of the unique events will be the Super Sweet competition. As part of a nationwide road show, leading daytime show This Morning will be appearing at this year’s Bristol Balloon Fiesta in search of the UK’s best dessert recipes. The competition, Super Sweet aims to discover a delicious homemade dessert that’s tasty enough to be stocked in the shopping aisles of leading grocer, Tesco.

The judges will then choose their favourites who will be asked to take part in the semi final in London. The winning dessert is crowned Super Sweet and will be sold at Tesco. Fifty per cent of the available advanced car parking spaces have now sold so organisers are advising anyone planning on driving to the event to book their tickets as soon as possible. Visitors who purchase car packing passes in advance can now opt for privilege car parking. For just £10 per car per day, privilege car parking guarantees a space in the parking area closest to the showground, a dedicated entrance with easier access on and off site and an event programme. Advanced car parking is also available at the familiar price of just £6 per car per day, this guarantees a space within a short distance of the showground and a dedicated entrance and exit to the Fiesta site. As well as securing a parking space closer to the Fiesta site, by booking in advance purchasers also receive a discount of £4 on advanced car parking – on the day car parking is charged at £10.

This year, for the first time, visitors will be able to see how a hot air balloon is made. To celebrate its 40th anniversary, the world’s largest hot air balloon manufacturer, Cameron Balloons will take on the challenge of constructing a passenger-carrying balloon, on site, in about four days. To acknowledge Cameron Balloons 40th anniversary, the Fiesta will have a strong ‘Made in Bristol’ theme throughout the weekend. This year the event will include an extended Bristol food court, which made its maiden appearance last year and local brewer, Zero Degrees will be providing a bandstand, programmed with local acts as well as the bars around the site. Arena and air displays, over 250 trade stands, local and international food stalls, a funfair and a variety of other entertainment complete the fun-packed festival. The Man Clutch - Yay or Nay? Love it or loathe it, you can not help but deny the steadily creeping movement of the man clutch into an everyday item. Although it may currently be a feature confined to the collections of designers and the hands of models (and the occasional fashion industry insider), it may not be long before the man clutch will be in the hands of many a metropolitan man. I saw it happen with the cardigan, I saw it happen with the man bag and, if this weeks Gucci collection is anything to go by, we may well see it happen with the clutch. Personally, I am all for the clutch. I’m not a transvestite, nor am I interested in drag, but the man clutch, like so many pieces, has the power to be transitional. The long and folded styles we saw at Gucci were almost a smaller adaptation of the briefcase. And, combined with the dark, neutral colours and the masculinity of the fabric, these were wearable designs that could easily be seen in the hands of any businessman or man about town. Having seen my Fashion Beans colleague Ashley Cover carry, what he insists is, a document wallet, although I enjoy calling it a clutch solely at his annoyance and my amusement, I was reminded that document wallets have been carried by many men for years, almost as a symbol of status, a suggestion of professionalism and power.
So, we many not see male clutch bags on the shelves of Topman or Urban Outfitters in the immediate future, but for now there are still many options available to those with a less conservative taste. Ebay is a prime source of vintage finds, as our specialist stores. Alternatively, you could save up for a gorgeous Gucci clutch. Who knows, by the time you can afford one they may well have hit the mainstream...

Lifestyle: Film Bristol Encounters 0117 Hour Film Challenge Presented by Bristol Film Office, Encounters Bristol International Film Festival & M Shed. Supported by Bristol City Council A SHORT RIDE TO SUCCESS Thursday 30 June: Between 17 – 22 June 2011, filmmakers from Bristol and beyond took part in the Bristol Encounters 0117 Hour Film Challenge, a short filmmaking competition to celebrate the opening of M Shed, the new museum of Bristol.
Filmmakers were challenged to make a 2 minute 30 second short film in 117 hours, inspired by an artefact, theme or story from the galleries of the museum. Bristol Film Office provided a selection of strange and spectacular locations across the city such as Bristol Grammar School, Victorian toilets, a large warehouse, Bristol Ferries and more. The teams were also supported by a number of local organisations in the production process including; Big Bang Post Production, Dreambase Sound Studios, Films @59, Mecure Holland House Hotel, Premier Apartments and Visual Impact.
A total of 50 teams registered by Wednesday 15 June, 37 teams arrived at the launch of M Shed museum, and 30 films were finally handed in by the competition deadline at 10am on Wednesday 22 June. A variety of filmmakers took part, from professionals to students, film enthusiasts and artists, who each responded to the museum through an assortment of styles and genres, from live action drama, to animation, documentary, performance, experimental and even 3D. (Please see the full list of teams and films in the sidebar) The films were judged by a prestigious jury made up of industry professionals and representatives of the city, including Anna Farthing, Producer of the M Shed Launch; Chris Moll, Executive Producer (I Features, Nowhere Boy, Of Time and the

The collection of films premiered on 24 June in the magnificent M Shed event space overlooking the city, at a reception attended by over 200 people. We are delighted to announce that the winner of the Bristol Encounters 0117 Hour Film Challenge 2011 went to The Village Bicycles team for their film ‘Wheelers Love Story’. Inspired by the old fashioned bicycles in the museum, the film follows the romantic journey of two vintage bikes falling in love as they ride across the city. Staggered by the quality of all the films the jury had a difficult decision but after much deliberation stated, ‘Wheelers Love Story’ was well produced and used a fun and lighted hearted way to animate the inanimate that speaks to and of the city. This film has an opportunity to play on an international stage and take Bristol round the world.’ The jury congratulated everyone who took part in the challenge, and gave a special mention to documentary ‘Alan’s Town’, performance piece ‘Reading the Riot’, experimental film ‘Coca da Potata’ and animation ‘On The Bus’. The Rt. Hon. Lord Mayor Geoff Gollop presented the winning team with a large cheque for £1,000, an engraved paperweight thanks to Bristol Blue Glass, and a selection of ‘I Heart Bristol’ t-shirts donated by Beast Clothing. Sofia Ejderos from the winning team The Village Bicycles said, ‘It was such a good experience, I think the tight deadline made us focused and creativity thrived. Best of all it was a really fun film to make, chipping around Bristol animating bicycles!’
Lifestyle: Film Encounters Festivals Managing Director, Liz Harkman said, ‘We have been overwhelmed by the response to this challenge and look forward to developing the relationship with M Shed and Bristol Film Office to turn this event into an annual activity forming part of the city’s memory and providing a snap shot of Bristol life each year.’ Bristol Film Office, Film Liaison Officer, Esther Mars said, ‘The challenge was a fantastic success and shows the range of films that can be created in a finite time, and Bristol’s variety of locations. Filmmaking is really important for Bristol, so I think it’s excellent that we can support filmmakers and the cities locations in promoting them in this engaging and exciting way.’ Producer of the M Shed Launch, Anna Farthing said, ‘Film captures moments in time, and we are delighted that the 0117 Film Challenge enabled the creation of some wonderful films that will be lodged in the city archives so that people in the future will be able to see not only what Bristol was like in June 2011, but the interests of the filmmaking community and the inspiration provided by the M Shed launch.’ The films will join the museum collections and be available to view by visitors in the future. They will also be screened to the public at 7.30pm, 30th July on BBC Big Screen in Millennium Square Bristol, as part of the Bristol Harbour Festival.It has been his pleasure, pain and privilege to become a painter (via repeated pilgrimages and explorations in the realms of body,mind and spirit) . . and increasingly , and thankfully , a relatively fulfilled man of the same-sex affections variety. In part, the measure of his progress and ability can be seen in his art , which exhibits a development from exuberant and sensual landscapes in the manner of his artist forebears, through nostalgia for lost panoramas, to the hopes of enjoying loving manly fellowship inseparably entwined with his subject matter.

Simon Nelson talks at Bath Race Equalities Commitee It really was an honour and a privilege to be invited to Bath Race Equality Councils annual general meeting to talk about my very personal experience as a black gay man. Unfortunately the weather wasn’t kind and the numbers in attendance were small however the discussion that followed my brief presentation was I feel progressive considering the taboo that is still race and sexual orientation.

that caused a degree of controversy in itself. As I mentioned to the audience there are many forms of social constructs/ terms that communities use to identify, we’re not a homogenous group and we are not all at the same place. For many LGBT people a discussion on sexuality might be deemed a step back however what if you’ve never taken that step forward. My sexuality was shaped not from an understanding of legislation and or support networks but from the simple fact that I knew I was attracted to other guys. To me my sexual orientation is defined by the fact that I am an ‘out’ gay man having come through the struggle for self acceptance and wider family acceptance - my sexual orientation didn’t just arrive! Understanding this important fact for me is crucial for all those wishing to progress their work in with BME LGB people their families and loved ones. This isn’t just about me but my wider family and community. I talked about my own experience of having outed myself to my parents back in 1984. At that time there were few individuals or organisations that could support my unique experience of being black and gay. Indeed I doubt the situation has improved much with few agencies whether gay or black led having the necessary knowledge of the complexities of life as a black gay person. The racism and the homophobia I experienced and still experience are the result of as I see it ‘competing struggles’ for equality. My parents had and I would argue would still have difficulty in finding support from agencies whether black or gay led, making it impossible for them to come ‘out’ about my sexuality to other family members and or their wider community. For my parents there was only one sexuality, heterosexual, therefore who could they turn to for understanding of their son’s sexual orientation? I spoke about my family and their rejection and gradual move to acceptance something they still struggling with to this day. I listened to a progressive audience of black and gay people and for the first time got a real sense of a sea change in opinions with the REC talking of joint working to challenge the issues of racism and homophobia. So watch this space – turning the rhetoric into action – well that’s the challenge but at least there appears to be a will to move the debate on. Development: Health THT News THT comments on new trial results showing that once-daily pill for HIV-negative people can prevent them from acquiring HIV
If you have seen the news from UNAIDS and WHO about new results showing that a once-daily pill for HIV-negative people can prevent them from acquiring HIV, you may be interested in the following comment from HIV and sexual health charity Terrence Higgins Trust (THT): THT’s Policy Director Lisa Power, said: “These findings are a useful development. We need to employ every method at our disposal to drive down the onward transmission of HIV and this is likely to be one of a range of future options. “We already know that if someone has HIV, using treatment drastically reduces the likelihood of them passing it on, as does using condoms. We also know that if an accident happens, like a condom breaking during sex, then giving the HIV-negative partner treatment (PEP, or post exposure prophylaxis) also reduces the chance of passing on HIV. These trial results show that, to some extent, pre-treatment (PREP, or pre-exposure prophylaxis) also reduces onward transmission. “What we need now are further trials, particularly with gay men, to see how the same level of protection can be achieved for them as was found for heterosexuals in this trial and to see how this can be optimised for all. There is no single method of prevention, short of nobody ever having sex again, that can on its own stop the transmission of HIV. PREP may become one of the many strategies we use to prevent it- but if you want to avoid HIV right now, don’t stop using condoms. And if you’ve been at risk, get tested and look after your health.”

Bristol Youth Links (BYL) is the umbrella brand for a range of integrated services: Open access play activities for children and young people Open access, enjoyable and exciting structured positive activities that children and young people can do in their own time, including volunteering Information and personalised advice, guidance and support that enable young people to make informed decisions and choices about their lives Ways for children and young people to have their say in developing services so that they are accessible, attractive and relevant for them and their families These services are delivered at tier 1 and tier 2 alongside and complementing the formal education system and tier 3 and 4 services for all children and young people aged 8 – 19 (and for those up to 24 with additional needs). These services contribute to building resilience and protective factors in their lives, help them to become more self-reliant and better able to manage their personal development, including their learning. The Bristol Youth Links Strategy “A Toolkit for Life” was agreed by Bristol Children’s Trust in April 2010, following feedback from a range of stakeholders. out+proud in the LGBT community: UWE at Pride Bristol 2011 UWE is committed to LGBT equality The University of the West of England sponsored and took part in Pride Bristol 2011 on 16 July. As one of Pride partners, UWE had a stall in the Community Tent on the day. The UWE stall was one of the most popular stalls in the tent and many people enjoyed making their own badges with their unique messages. Some prospective students asked what student life would be like and UWE staff were on hand to answer any queries.

Colin Offler, President, and Louise Goux-Wirth, Vice President Community and Welfare, of UWE Students’ Union said, “The Students’ Union is proud to say that we, hand in hand with UWE, support Pride; not just in Bristol, but across the globe. Equality, diversity and inclusivity are core to everything we do within our Students’ Union because of its great importance in our society as well as the importance of the welfare of our students. LGBT events like Bristol Pride demonstrate the fact that we live in a vastly enriching and cultural society. However, it also highlights the evermore important fact that we should never fear from talking, sharing and contributing to that culture and that we should celebrate in doing so.”

A STAR-STUDDED MAIN STAGE FOR THIS YEAR’S MANCHESTER PRIDE 2011 MANCHESTER PRIDE ANNOUNCES SOME TOP CLASS ACTS JUST IN TIME TO CELEBRATE ITS 21ST BIRTHDAY IN STYLE TURN IT UP THIS AUGUST: PIXIE LOTT Singing sensation PIXIE LOTT will be headlining Manchester Pride’s Gaydar Main Arena for 2011, being welcomed back just in time for her brand new single ‘All About Tonight’, due for early September release. Pixie Lott – as if you don’t know her already – first hit the UK music scene when debut smash ‘Mama Do (Uh Oh, Uh Oh)’ went in straight at number one in the UK singles chart. Her followup track ‘Boys and Girls’ matched this effort, and the Bromley-born pop-star went on to have three further successive Top 20 hits. The album these singles came from, Turn It Up, which is certified as double platinum in the United Kingdom. Since, Pixie Lott has made numerous television appearances – including a judging panel spot on TV’s The X-Factor – and has starred in feature film ‘Fred: The Movie’. 2011 holds all things new for Ms Lott, and where better to showcase some of her new material (Pixie is set to release her second album this year) than headlining Manchester Pride. We can’t wait to ‘Turn It Up’ with Pixie on the day!
Community: Manchester Pride PREPARE FOR LANDING: PAM ANN Departing from her home country of Australia and set to land over Manchester Pride’s Big Weekend is hysterical and extremely camp fictitious ‘trolley dolly’ PAM ANN! Borrowed from Down Under, Pam will be joining Manchester Pride again after a successful flight to its 2010 dinner, both as a part of the Pride Parade (Saturday 27 August) and as a Gaydar Main Arena act. The alter ego of Australian comedienne Caroline Reid, Pam Ann is an acclaimed act that has received fabulous receptions from the likes of Victoria Beckham, David Furnish and Lulu. Her sharp, teasing wit has kept her a firm favourite of many – so fasten your seatbelts and brace yourselves for landing – Pam Ann is back in Manchester! ALL RISE: THE BOYS FROM BLUE COME TO MANCHESTER PRIDE Also added to the line-up for this year’s Manchester Pride is boy-band Blue, fresh off the back of their Eurovision Song Contest success with hit single ‘I Can’. Duncan, Lee, Simon and Antony Costa will be joining Manchester Pride over the Big Weekend performing some of their best loved classics, such as ‘Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word’, ‘If You Come Back’ and ‘One Love’. In conjunction with Pride’s 21st Birthday celebrations, Blue will also be turning 10 this year! So if there wasn’t already enough reason to celebrate this August, we can ‘All Rise’ for one of the UK’s most successful boy-bands of the past few decades. And – for the Pride boys – they’re not half bad looking either!

Heidi, Amelle and Jade – AKA the Sugababes – will also be headlining Manchester Pride this August. The girls, who have enjoyed recent success with top ten singles ‘All About A Girl’, ‘Wear My Kiss’ and ‘Get Sexy’ from album Sweet 7, are being brought to the Gaydar Main Arena by G-A-Y, and festival goers can expect to see something with glitz, glamour, and a little bit of sugar… Despite having been away for a short while, the Sugababes are the UK’s longest standing girl band around, having been in and out of our charts for over twelve years. So, whilst we look forward to hearing the fabulous and current material from the three babes, we may well be in for a few nostalgic treats on the night! The girls will be playing a G-A-Y section on the Gaydar Main Arena, headlined also by Alexandra Burke.

HALLEJULAH: ALEXANDRA BURKE COMES TO MANCHESTER PRIDE Alexandra Burke, winner of X-Factor 2008, will be headlining Manchester Pride’s ‘Big Weekend’ this August. Alexandra has had a double platinum album, Overcome, which includes three number one singles (‘Hallelujah’, ‘Bad Boys’ and ‘Start Without You’). Hailed as “the British Beyonce”, Alexandra is known for her bubbly persona, strong, powerful voice and pop melodies. There is no doubt that Alexandra will have the crowd on their feet with her singalong tunes, including ‘All Night Long’, and will get the crowd going in this spectacular set over Manchester Pride’s 21st birthday and ‘Big Weekend’.
