West End / Christmas Steps / Harbourside / Old City / Stokes Croft / Old Market Quarter The West End of the city extends from the Hipperdrome to the Downs and everything in between. The area is filled with shops, cafes and entertainment venues from dawn till dusk. This month we have chosen to focus on one of the newest resturants in town River Cottage, opening soon.

St John’s Court Hall, a Grade-II listed 19th Century church building on Whiteladies Road, will be home to our new Canteen next month. Now building on the success of Axminster and its award-winning successor in Plymouth, River Cottage will re-create its unique food offering in the atmospheric church building in the Clifton area of the city. It will offer a combination of freshly prepared seasonal, local, organic and wild food, on a daily changing menu, in the relaxed ambience of the restaurant. “The best seasonal local produce is always at the heart of the River Cottage approach to cooking, and we are very much looking forward to celebrating and contributing to the vibrancy of the local food community in Bristol,” said Hugh. “We have a great opportunity to source the best ingredients and create some fantastic food in a unique location,” he added. “Bristol is an exciting place to be part of and a great opportunity for everyone at River Cottage. We believe passionately about where food comes from and how it is produced and wants to support local producers, the local economy and reduce the miles your food has to travel,” said Andrew Green, River Cottage’s Development Chef. “A strict focus on seasonality is encouraged as is a ‘no compromise’ attitude on quality and taste.” The Canteen will be managed by Bristolian Sarah Kieck, bringing her local knowledge and experience of running restaurants in Bristol. The Head Chef will be Mark Stavrakakis, who has worked for Rockfish Grill and Seafood Restaurant in Whiteladies Road, and Goldbrick House, also in Bristol.

Lel Burnett

Fashion, Editorial, Hair and Beauty Photographer / Mute Media / www.mutemedia.co.uk

The launch of our new culture section where we interview people involved in the art and culture industries, gain insights into their work and get to enjoy their personal selections of their work. This issue we interview Lel Burnet from Mute Media whos portfolio of diverse work covers many areas of the industry. Where do you get your inspiration from ? Lel says:I get most of my inspiration from music, comic books and films, particularly very old films and world cinema. I’m a huge fan of Asian cinema.

Culture:

What kind of camera do you use? Lel says: My main camera is a Sony A580 with a Mix of Sony and Sigma lenses. For film I'm currently shooting on a Pentax 6x7 How much creative freedom do you have on an editorial shoot? Lel says: Usually quite a lot. Most people will contact me with a concept and a few preferences, but I tend to take control of the management of the team and have the final say on creative choices. How important are personal projects to you ? Lel says: Personal projects are of paramount importance to me. It's so easy to get caught up in the everyday work and the mundane but necessary aspects of the job. They remind my why I started taking photos in the first place. I find them essential for pushing myself and keeping my passion for my work alive.

How much preparation goes into a shoot? Lel says: That depends on the shoot, sometimes months, sometimes 5 minutes. how much do you do in post production? With the exception of hair and beauty work which can take hours or even days at times, Usually not a lot. Lel says: I try to get as much right as possible in camera and only use minimal processing afterwards. There are even a couple of shots in my portfolio that haven’t been retouched at all. Do you think a photographer needs a philosophy to do good work ? Lel says: Honestly, no. Anyone can do “good” work these days if they throw enough money and time into it. To be successful however I think a photographer needs motivation, adaptability, persistence and patience. (a little luck helps too!) Ka-Boom!

Exhibition Runs:24th Jan - 17th Mar 2013 / View Art Gallery / www.viewartgallery.co.uk Ka-Boom! draws on creativity from the comic book universe, bringing together an explosive show of dynamic artwork from emerging and established artists. This collection of fast paced, electric images will provide a sensory overload for visitors. The exhibition crosses generations of storytelling. With the thematic elements of the comic book traceable back to ancient Greek mythological gods and superheroes, and with its format evolving from the narrative sequences of cave painting, this genre is seeped in history. With a combination of neon integrated works, sculpture, painting and drawing, Ka-Boom!‘s heroes, villains and landscapes are largely created within the imaginations the artists. Prepare to be transported by Kristian Fletcher and Thomas Dowdeswell into mysterious cities, introduced to a world of unnerving fictional characters by Damian Daly and Mr Mead, astounded by Darren West’s racy neon-works and Ben Allen’s electric images and to recognize famous personalities from this enchanting world by Paul Oz. The result will be a vivacious show of colour, excitement, intrigue and happiness. Despite the playful appearance and reputation of the comic book, there is a serious undertone to this style of art. Traditionally occupying the fringes of pop culture, it is much more than just a simple form of entertainment. As its themes, characters and narratives largely feed off historical context and cultural trends, it can be seen as a reflection of contemporary and past society, politics and culture. “I’m through talking, now get out of my cave” (Batman said to Robin)
