What is Purple Flag Purple Flag is an accreditation process similar to the Blue Flag award for beaches. It leads to Purple Flag status for town & city centres that meet or surpass the standards of excellence in managing the evening and night time economy. The Purple Flag Scheme is operated by a board in each city. In Bristol The Purple Flag partnership is a group of organizations from the public, private and non for profit sectors working together with the aim to attract a greater number of visitors into the city centre at night and to reduce the negative perceptions that some people held about our city centre. The Partnership feel that we have made considerable progress due to the Purple Flag scheme in bringing about change and believe that the Purple Flag award is an independent confirmation of our achievements to date.

What is in it for Bristol Bristol is a dynamic, prosperous, forward looking city that is the gateway to the South West with ambitions to be one of the great European cities, proud of its diverse communities, its heritage and proud of the rich range of attractions on offer to both visitors and residents. Bristol attracts almost half a million West End / Harbourside / Old City overseas visitors a year (staying at least one night). / Bristol Shopping Quarter / Old Market Quarter Visitors and residents bring the city centre to life and during the summer months the city’s Harbourside areas, public squares and green spaces are vibrant, exciting places and its visitor economy is worth an Purple Flag Bristol Operating Hours estimated £1 billion annually to Bristol’s economy supporting almost 20,000 jobs. Monday - Sunday 17:00-05:00

Purple Flag Map Victoria Rooms & RWA West End

One of the most significant achievements is that Purple Flag has acted as a catalyst to enhance partnership work around managing the night time economy. Quarterly Night time self assessments are now a permanent fixture and have proved invaluable for addressing issues and identifying new opportunities to improve the offer to residents and visitors using the city centre. Muscle & Fitness Photography by James Critchley “Interpreting form & structure, stylist & photographer James Critchley’s work naturally captures the masculinity of his subject.” A rising star in the portrait and physique photography world, James Critchley has already shot many of the world’s physique models. What sets his work apart from others in the field, is his ability to combine his skills and knowledge of physique photography with influences and structures drawn from his passion for landscapes and nature. Looking at his choice of stunning locations and physique models, his work is reminiscent of Ansel Adams and Bruce Weber.

Chem Sex by Matt Spike Fetish Photographer The chem sex project came together because Matt was looking for a project to do in a fetish way, that also contained a social message. Matt soon hooked up with David Stuart at 56 Dean Street, who was working on a documentary with Vice Productions. They came together as a team and Matt carried on producing images which were documented by Vice, and this became the chem sex connection. It does not aim to arouse or to be too serious, but leave the decision in the hands of the person seeing the picture as to what it actually means. Is it sexy? Is it dangerous? Is it both? These are answers that can only be provided by the person seeing the image. Matt Spike Fetish Photographer Show Matt Spike is a fetish artist who uses video, photo and human installations to illustrate his view of homoeroticism. As he puts it, “I simply must ‘create’ what obsesses me. As an ex-leather escort, I’m full of ideas and concepts relating to submission and dominance and the superficiality of sexuality. I am a politically-minded person; I like to include an edge in most of my images, as I believe taboos should always be challenged. And as an admirer of subculture, I gravitate towards left-field, bizarre tastes in sexual practice”. FUNDED BY

If I Think of Germany at Night 15

Date: Fri 19 - Thu 25 May Director: Romuald Karmakar Cast: Ata, Roman Flügel, Sonja Moonear Time: 105 mins, Released: 2017, Country: Germany Venue: www.watershed.co.uk Fans of electronic dance music know that Germany remains one of the greatest producers of techno in the world, and that visiting Berlin’s infamous nightspot Berghain is the EDM (Electronic Dance Music) equivalent of going on a pilgrimage. Director Romuald Karmakar hammers that point home in his documentary about the German electronic music scene, by focusing on five major DJs who are keeping Teutonic techno alive and well. Speaking - and sometimes freely associating - about the music they make and its evolution over the past decades, international stars (Ricardo Villalobos, Sonja Moonear, Ata Macias, Roman Flügel and Move D/David Moufang) take us behind the turntables to reveal the methods to their madness. In between eloquent thoughts from the musicians in interviews, quiet observations of them at work at their DJ home, and images of sweating masses at raves, a selective image gradually and very quietly emerges of a music scene in transition.

“Interpreting form & structure, stylist & photographer James Critchley’s work naturally captures the masculinity of his subject.”

A rising star in the portrait and physique photography world, James Critchley has already shot many of the worlds physique models. What sets his work apart is the combination of his physique photography with his other passion of landscape design which creates his unique style. His choice of stunning locations and physique models his work is reminiscent of Ansel Adams and Bruce Weber.

Where do you get your inspiration from ? Coming from a design background I have always been drawn to structure and form. This extended into my photography and into capturing the form and structure of the athletic physical form. Living in the Cotswolds, much of my nature series focuses on locations based in natural settings and way the natural setting accentuates the strong form of the model.

Culture

James Critchley Photographer / www.jamescritchley.co.uk / Show 2-3 June 2017 / Space Gallery, Bristol, BS2 0BH

What kind of camera do you use? I use a Canon 5D with a variety of lenses in order to create a range of different photos. To me, it’s the lenses that create the magic. How much creative freedom do you have on an editorial shoot? I have had complete freedom in almost every shoot. I am very lucky that I get to choose my models, locations and style of photography How important are personal projects to you ? I would like to think that almost all of my muscle photography is personal to me. To start with, I had to ask the models to shoot for me with very little photographs to entice them. Now I have top fitness and muscle models from around the world asking me to shoot them and within those shoots, I choose where and how they will pose with very good results. So each shoot I do, I like to think is a personal project.

Culture:- James Critchley Photographer / www.jamescritchley.co.uk/ Show 2-3 June 2017 / Space Gallery, Bristol, BS2 0BH

How much preparation goes into a shoot? Often I set out a list of goals and ideas for each shoot and sometimes the models will bring their ideas with them. I have a fantastic assistant Alicia who will assist with lighting, camera equipment etc. and without her I couldn’t keep up with the fast pace of some of the shoots. How much do you do in post production? A LOT! My ratio of shooting to editing is surprising. I might spend 6 hours on a shoot but I can spend up to 6 days working up the photographs. I am very particular, and nothing leaves my studio without being edited to the highest standard. My ethos is to over deliver on images for my clients. Where the top fitness photographers might only release five photos from a shoot (some models have dieted for weeks for that shoot) I will happily work up at least 50 images for them, and give a massive variety of shots for them to choose from. Do you think a photographer needs a philosophy to do good work ? Yes I do. A very happy positive attitude helps enormously and that can get you through the most awkward of shoots. Keep things fun, always make the models laugh and that not only makes for photos full of emotion but also keeps the shoot upbeat and memorable.

Culture:- James Critchley Photographer / www.jamescritchley.co.uk/ Show 2-3 June 2017 / Space Gallery, Bristol, BS2 0BH

Among your works, which one is your favourite? Why? All of my photographs are like my children and I love them all. I have models who I have a lot of time for who have helped me get started before I was well known and I am particularly fond of their photos, so a massive thank you to Kenolivier, Charlie Garforth and Ry Williams whose support and loyalty has helped me get where I am today. Whose work has influenced you most? I am a big fan of photographer Pat Lee from the United States, whose ability to make a monstrous vascular bodybuilder look serene and alluring has always inspired me. British fitness photographer Jules Godfrey always manages to capture images where the light and look of the models is so beautiful. What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos? I used to get very nervous before a shoot and I now look forward to them. I wish I could tell the younger me to relax more and just enjoy the view. Describe your photographic style? How did you develop your style? My style is so varied and is still developing, like my chaotic mind every photo from a single shoot can look like a completely different photographers work. I have recently become a big fan of depth of field images where the subject is perfectly crisp but the surrounding landscape is almost like a watercolor painting. I always throw in a location with every physique shoot which now has helped me get recognized as one of the UK’s best location photographers. To see James Critchley’s latest show please visit Space Gallery, 6 West Street, Old Market Quarter, Bristol BS2 0BH show is Fri 2nd June and Saturday 3rd June 2017 all day both days and into the evening.

www.WEBSITE GOES HERE For many BLUF represents the ultimate gay leatherman fantasy – that Tom of Finland look made real. BLUF@ Bristol is the west’s very own meeting exclusively for BLUF members. It is a night where the venue is filled with the heady aroma of leather and expectation as men in full leather meet, chat, drink and get to know fellow BLUF members. It’s always a night to remember! Now in its third year, BLUF@Bristol has become a popular event for members of BLUF, a community of leathermen who share a love of fine leather and the realisation of a fantasy.
