Honey Dijon 13 August 2016 / Playing at Bitch Please! / Motion / www.motionbristol.com

Honey Dijon was born and raised in Chicago the home of house music, but has been living in NYC for many years. Like many involved in the scene, her love affair with music began upon hearing her parent’s soul and r&b records at home. Soon she wanted to be the one dropping the needle on the record whenever they held parties in the family basement and the lure of club life soon followed. Before long she was obsessively collecting her own music from hallowed stores like Imports Etc and Gramaphone in Chicago, all the while honing her own personal style. It was while hanging out in these stores where Honey met and formed a long lasting friendship with Derrick Carter, who became a mentor. It was he who introduced her to the underground of Chicago where she was exposed to the sounds of jacking house and Detroit techno. After relocating to New York City, Honey also met another music giant Danny Tenaglia, whose legendary sets at Twilo were also a major source of inspiration. “Danny heavily influenced my sound as a DJ’, says Honey. “The drama of his delivery and risk taking always informed me of how I wanted to present music. Of course, Derrick and Chicago house were also very influential in my development as an artist, so it’s this combination of Chicago and New York that has helped me develop my signature sound.” Still preferring vinyl as a format, there is something hugely authentic about the way Honey mixes, fusing the bump of Chicago with more classic New York sounds and other European influences. Her sets are known for their strong programming, passion and integrity. The art of the mix itself is also very important to Honey as anyone who has witnessed her play can testify about her deft mixing skills and the way she dexterously flows between house or techno with a warm, hypnotic feel. She has played at many of the best venues around the world including esteemed underground haunts like Panorama Bar and Harry Klein in Germany, Sub Club in Glasgow, Output and Sankeys in New York, Ushuaia in Ibiza and of course Smart Bar in Chicago. In the studio, Honey brings her unique perspective and experience to her productions as well. Of course heritage sounds are at the rock bed of what she does, but far from churning out throwback sounds, she makes sure new ideas are at the forefront. For evidence of this look no further than her releases and remixes on Classic Records and Leftroom. In fact this cultural star recently mixed a retrospective compilation for the legendary Classic Music label as well being commissioned to create the soundtrack for a recent Louis Vuitton Menswear shows. With her charisma, style and broad understanding of electronic music and upcoming gigs in Los Angeles, Chicago, Toronto, Amsterdam, Germany, Spain, and Paris to name a few there seems to be no stopping Miss Dijon.

Spencer Parker is one of Europe’s leading djs, his unique style of house and techno is in demand the world over and his productions, remixes and reedits are regularly supported by names such as Ryan Elliot, Mike Huckaby, Radio Slave, DVS1, Gerd Janson and Zip. Spencer’s musical style is simply described best as, underground house and techno. Preferred record labels range from the techno stylings of Grey Report, Modularz, and Non Series, through to the house sound of White Material, FXHE, and, his own imprint, Work Them Records. A “typical” set from Spencer could include everything from house to techno to disco classics. Elsewhere in the world, you can often find Spencer manning the decks at clubs such as Womb (Tokyo), Concrete (Paris), Dude Club (Milan) and Dance Tunnel (London). The Politics of Identity: LGBT Representation in Public Life Written by Lauren Bond / Twitter @ASAPBond / Written for www.bristolwomensvoice.org.uk /

On the topic of representation Ani believes that ‘transgender people are a demographic we should be actively encouraging to become part of the council.’ Carla tells me that there have been trans Green Party candidates elsewhere in the country. Charlie Kiss, for example, was a parliamentary candidate for Islington South and Finsbury. However, Ani and Carla are not aware of any transgender councillors in Bristol, and agree that his may be due to the negative media and public attention a person may face. Ani believes ‘a lot of progress has been made’ in this area but trans people still face a lot of negative press. They both agree that there is little the council can do to combat this; despite equality procedures being in place you cannot make people change their own intrinsic views or control the media. Ani goes on to suggest that ‘a lot of trans people have enough of their own personal battles to deal with’ without taking on the pressures of becoming a councillor.

“A lot of trans people have enough of their own personal battles to deal with’ without taking on the pressures of becoming a councillor.” Ani STAFFORD-TOWNSEND I ask Carla what the council is doing to consider the specific needs of LGBT people in Bristol and she tells me that ‘whenever a motion goes to council or cabinet for a decision there is a section in the report that looks at the impact on various characteristic groups, for example sexuality, disability and race.’ Carla recalls one motion thought to impact LGBT people; the piloting of swipe card access to public libraries because of the possibility of hate crime if vulnerable people were in the library alone. Although the likelihood of this is fairly low, it is positive that the council actively considers the issue from this angle. Finally, I asked Ani and Carla what they are doing to get the voices of LGBT people in their wards heard. Carla, whose ward incidentally has the highest concentration of gay men in the city, finds that people in her ward are very proactive and gets contacted a lot. She also hopes to have regular surgeries where a variety of different people can express their views. Ani’s ward is very central so she hopes to connect with various student LGBT groups from both UWE and Bristol University. We end by discussing the impact the 50:50 campaign will have. Carla remarks on its success: ‘It seems to be doing really well so far’ and says she likes how it is being explored from many different angles. Both agree that it will help get more women into the council and Ani adds that it is ‘good to raise visibility of it as an issue.’ For more information about the 50:50 campaign, see www.bristolwomensvoice.org.uk

Summertime Date: Fri 15 - Thu 21 July Director: Catherine Corsini Cast: Cécile De France, Izïa Higelin, Noémie Lvovsky Subtitled. 105 mins, 2016, France Tickets: www.watershed.co.uk Price: From £6.50 A luminous lesbian romance begins in 1971 France when a young farm girl moves to Paris and becomes smitten with a charismatic radical feminist, only to discover that their love is not as easy, nor as accepted, when they return to the countryside. It’s 1971 and country girl Dephine (Izïa Higelin) moves to Paris to break free from the shackles of her family, where she meets metropolitan feminist activist Carole (Cécile de France), and the spark of attraction between them is undeniable. Their bliss is interrupted, however, when Delphine’s father suffers a stroke and she must return to the family farm to assure its continued existence. But Carole insists on accompanying her lover, and the two must confront the ramifications of their forbidden relationship in a world all too slow to accept social change... Both unabashedly sexy and utterly realistic and compelling, this is a beautiful, sensual film about two women in love - and the challenges they must face, together, that are beyond their control.

Free to be me Author: Title: Publisher: ISBN-10:

Lori Streich / Rosa Fanti

Free to be Me Tangent Books 1910089362

Synopsis Freedom Youth celebrated its 20th Birthday in 2015. Rosa didn’t want this important milestone to pass unnoticed, so we started talking with each other and then with Off the Record and Outstories about it. This led us to approach the Heritage Lottery Fund. They generously agreed to fund an oral history project to tell Freedom’s story in the words of the people who set it up, who have been or are its members, and who have worked for Freedom over the years. We interviewed 25 people, and heard from many more past and present members who filled in surveys. They spoke or wrote about the difference that being a part of Freedom has made to their lives, and how it has supported and enabled young people to be out, and to feel comfortable with their sexuality and identity. Most of all, Freedom has always been a place where young people can just enjoy themselves as themselves - whatever their identities. Identity is an important issue for young people, and for Freedom as a whole. Over its 21 years, the whole question of identity has changed and Freedom has changed with it. Initially, Freedom Youth defined itself as an LGB group (lesbian, gay and bisexual). By 2006, it was an LGBT group (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender). In 2016, it is an LGBTQ+ group, widely inclusive and including those who are queer/questioning and others. We have reflected this change throughout Free to be me. We have tried to use the right abbreviation (LGB, LGBT, LGBTQ+) in the appropriate time period as we’ve told Freedom’s story. What hasn’t changed is Freedom’s core service. It has run sessions in central Bristol every Tuesday evening (barring Christmas and similar) for 21 years. It is one of the oldest, and possibly the longest continuously running social and support group for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender young people in the UK. We want to thank the Heritage Lottery Fund for enabling us to record this previously hidden history, and everyone who contributed their stories and who gave their support to this project. Without you, we could not have told this story.

Kate Victoria (KT) Tunstall is a singer-songwriter and guitarist from Scotland. During her career she’s won a BRIT and an Ivor Novello Award, as well as the European Border Breakers Award – given to those who reach audiences outside their home country. Tunstall’s appearance on Later… with Jools Holland put her in the lime light. She only had 24 hours to prepare for the performance after the original act pulled out due to illness. Her debut album ‘Eye to the Telescope’ was re-released after she was on Later… and it reached number 3 (70 places higher than its original release). “From the moment the buzz bomb from Fife bounced on to the stage…she had the crowd exactly where she needed them,” says The Courier of KT Tunstall’s recent show at Perth Concert Hall. Eschewing the bulk of her back catalogue in favour of tracks from her soon-to-be-released album, the LA-based singer-songwriter delivered “a sparkling set … The new tunes evoke a period of watershed, of relationships past and freshbeginnings, with the mood upbeat and gutsy” (Scotsman). under 14s accompanied by an adult.

Bristol Pride Week

Pride Theatre Night 6 July 2016 @ 18:00 “Showcasing pride through diverse performances” Bristol Pride Festival bring their award-winning theatre night to The Wardrobe Theatre as they celebrate Pride across Bristol. Showcasing culture and community, the Pride Theatre night will feature three specially created pieces all in one evening: Venus & Adonis, Much Ado About Bingo, and #APPilyEverAfter

Venus & Adonis Pride proudly team up with the Bristol Shakespeare Festival as we explore LGBT themes in a special stage adaptation of Shakespeare’s epic poem.

Much Ado About Bingo Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your Bingo Dabber! Back in the Elizabethan era, Shakespeare was considered to be the light-entertainment of the day. Fast-forward to the 20th Century and popular culture gave birth to BINGO! You are invited to join ’70s telly host and crimplene-clad showbiz legend Derek Daniels for a sensationally silly Shakespearean round of retro musical bingo.

#APPilyEverAfter It’s 2016. We live most of our lives online – generations of thumbs ferociously swiping left and right. But is it possible to describe yourself in 140 characters? Can 6 photos honestly reflect your personality? Does one gym selfie truly reveal the inner workings of your soul? #APPilyEverAfter explores our generation’s reliance on networking apps and how their integration has irrevocably changed our pursuit of happiness. Inspired by hookup apps, dating sites and overbearing social expectations, Pride present the creative talents of Josh ‘Jacobs’ & Paul ‘Dincent’, as they try ever-so-hard to seduce you through song, sketches and stand up – delving deep into the world of online dating and unravelling the trials and tribulations they adventure. Venue: Wardrobe Theatre Old Market Quarter BS2 Price: £8

‘Free To Be Me’ Launch 7 July 2016 @ 17:00-19:00 We are pleased to invite you to the launch of Free to be me: celebrating 21 years of Freedom Youth. The book brings all of your stories together in a celebration of the first 21 years of Freedom Youth – one of the oldest and possibly the longest running LGBT youth groups in the UK. Thanks to support from the Heritage Lottery Fund, we were able to interview 25 people and we heard from more who have played a part in Freedom Youth from its start to the present day. Free to be me tells your stories in words and pictures. The book documents the history of Freedom Youth, explores the challenges and changing attitudes towards gender identity, and most of all shows how Freedom Youth has made a difference to the lives of young people by providing a space where they can be out and feel comfortable with their sexuality and identity. Please join us to celebrate the launch of this important book. Venue: Old Market Assembly

Bristol Water on tap at Pride Free Water at Bristol Pride Show nature #lovewins

Bristol Pride will be the first Bristol event to host a brand new Refill water bar, with Bristol’s finest on tap for free. Refill Bristol is the city’s free tap-water refill scheme and with more than 200 venues now signed up as Refill stations, where you can pop in and rehydrate for free, the focus is now on encouraging people to remember to carry a reusable bottle rather than buying single-use plastic bottled drinks that literally cost the earth. Plastic water bottles cause mountains of litter and waste at festivals like Pride – but with a water bar on site there’s no need to buy water, you can healthily hydrate for free! For many people the act of remembering to carry a reusable bottle is part of the challenge. So the message is clear – bring a refillable bottle with you to Pride or buy a Refill Bristol one when you are there. The cool, durable stainless steel bottles are half the price you’ll find online – at just £10 – and it will last you a lifetime. For Further Information visit www.refillbristol.org.uk
