NOTE

Magazine

A NEW YEAR. A Fresh Start. It’s time again to hit the reset button, pick some resolutions for the new year and set goals to get your life back on track. Now that the holidays are over and you have had some time to spend with your family, it’s time to get back to work. Although we all want to do well at work and be productive, it’s key to set some boundaries so your work doesn’t consume your family and personal time. Be sure to read our featured article on balancing work and life. In addition to reflecting on how things are going in our own lives as parents, we continually focus on our children’s lives and education. With such a variety of schools and programs available, you can now not only ask your child “What do you want to be when you grow up?” but they can actually start learning towards their interest and field of work they would like to pursue. Read “Choosing the Right School” by Renee Haines to help parents get a idea of what is available when it comes to your child’s education. Whether you have a child with special needs or know someone with a child with special needs, we always want them to be included and not have them feel left out because of their disabilities. “Yes They Can” by Bonny Osterhage highlights some fitness programs and facilities in San Antonio for disabled youth. And for all of you new year mothers-to-be, I know this is an exciting time with baby showers, sonograms and decorating a room for your little one. Be sure to read “Special Delivery” By Jessica Burshtynskyy, on the many birth options you have as a expectant mother.

Special Note Just as our own kids grow up and change over the years, so does Our Kids Magazine. You may have noticed some recent changes to the magazine, some big and some small. We have so many new and exciting things happening this year from working with new local mom bloggers to our new special needs section, as well as our annual Our Kids Camp Fair coming in March. We spoke to many families, teachers, doctors and parents over the past couple of months on Facebook. We listened to your suggestions and concerns. I’m proud to say that some of the changes to our magazine and planned articles for the coming year are a direct result of this feedback from the community. We are working as hard as ever for San Antonio parents and will continue to do so throughout the coming year. Happy New Year!

Did you

Know? A Piece of Kiddie Park History! Established in 1925, Kiddie Park claims the title of America’s oldest children’s amusement park. They have preserved their 1920’s style by maintaining all of the original rides. Grandparents who take their grandkids, reminisce of a time when they were children visting this iconic San Antonio attraction. But what if there was a way to be a part of Kiddie Park history? Did you know there is? Kiddie Park has started building a brick pathway through the park. Families can purchase an engraved brick to be included in the pathway. Just imagine, one day when your kids take their grandkids to Kiddie Park, they can point out your familiy brick symbolizing their part in Kiddie Park history! How cool is that?

Modern Life Leaving you

Tired & Stressed? Tips on Balancing your Work and Family By Allaire Williams Today’s family unit has evolved into a technologically-driven, on-the-go challenge with parents attempting to do it all at work and at home. It’s hard to balance a career and family life when your work is basically tethered to your hip as more companies are imposing their needs into your time off. How do you know when you are fighting a losing battle?

Here are a few common scenarios:

don’t even get to see them anymore. The only communication you have is when you text them during the day.

You are constantly running out of time to complete tasks. The dry cleaning needs to be picked up, or you have to go grocery shopping but are getting off work late and just don’t have the energy. One day has turned into five when you realize you don’t have anything to wear or you have to order takeout.

You are always working late. Deadlines are always eating up your time and your workload is continuously growing, creating an environment where you have to work late to keep up.

You are constantly stressed at work and at home. Everything sounds like “noise.” The kids want to talk and you don’t want to be bothered, or a co-worker needs some information on a project and you make up an excuse to make them go away. This is a clear indication of you being stretched too thin and that your stress level is sky high. You don’t have time for the kids. You’ve missed another football game or dance recital and homework time is over by the time you get home. Most of the time, the kids are on their way to bed or already in bed so you

You procrastinate with co-workers or are on the web throughout the workday. Your work has become so boring and monotonous that you find reasons to talk to co-workers and surf the web, causing a backlog in your work. You neglect your spouse and close friends. You only see your spouse early in the morning and late at night and have forgotten a few engagements you committed to. Red flags are everywhere. You never have a minute to yourself. Every time you plan to relax, something else comes up and you never have time to do the things that you enjoy.

While unplugging used to be the ultimate solution, it’s just not that easy anymore. With more BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) solutions in the workplace, balancing family and work life can be difficult. Although these scenarios are a part of your everyday situation, there are things you can do to ease the crunch, keep everyone happy and find time for yourself.

Here are a few tips to help you get back on track:

Keep the Family First Everyone needs gainful employment, and keeping your job is important. While necessary to take care of the family, jobs come and go, but your family is always there. Putting that fact into perspective should help you find the time to spend with the kids and your spouse. Arrange a date night, a family night and quick “staycations.” Put these in your calendar as standing appointments. When you are with the family, refrain from checking your email unless it is absolutely necessary. One of the best things you can do for yourself and your family is to leave your work at the office. Here are some fun things you can do throughout the week: • Exercise with the kids (go running, bike riding or to the park) • Have a family cook-off • Select programs to watch together

Set reminders This can be easier said than done and will take some getting used to. Set reminders for everything – checking email, getting up in the morning, taking time to exercise, date time with your spouse, time for the kids and anything else that is important. Do two sets of reminders, one for the office and one for home. Let them overlap so you will be able to see how productive you can be and get everything accomplished, get home on time and enjoy the rest of the day without working late. Prioritize Make a list of the things that are important to you. One by one, eliminate the “fillers.” What you have left is a list of the things that cannot be put on the backburner. These are the things for which you must set reminders and make time. Have “ME” time This may mean you have to get up an hour earlier, or you have to start taking lunch breaks, but everyday take some time just for yourself to reflect and recharge. If you have gotten into the habit of working through lunch, now is the time to eliminate that bad habit and get your life back! These are just a few ways to reassess your obligations, de-stress and put the focus back on you and your family to tip the scales of balance back in your favor.

Choosing the Right School The Many Types of Schools for Your Child Today’s San Antonio parents have more choices than their parents did when it comes to choosing the right schools for their kids. Public school districts have become home to more and more innovative magnet programs, high-tech learning laboratories and partnerships with local colleges. Additionally, private schools have become more accessible with the increase in scholarships and other tuition assistance in recent years. It’s also no longer a matter of children always attending their first day of school in a kindergarten classroom. San Antonio’s nationally recognized Pre-K 4 SA public education program for 4-year-olds expanded from two schools to four this school year. Avance-San Antonio provides early childhood education to children under the age of 3. So does San Pre-K kids learn cooking skills at Sunshine Cottage School for Deaf Antonio’s Mustard Seed Children. “They’re learning immediately from the time they’re born,” says Mustard Seed director Roxy Vasquez. “It’s not about babysitting. It’s a fully engaged curriculum.”

Early, Early Education Vasquez says learning activities at very early ages can produce long-term results. “They just grow and learn so much faster. It’s a more deliberate learning process. It sets them up for success later in life,” she says. The youngest students at San Antonio’s Cottage School for Deaf Children also are provided a “solid pre-literacy foundation” through the school’s Early Childhood Language Adventure Curriculum for kids ages 3 to 5. SA’s Private Schools San Antonio is also home to many secular and religious private schools. On the secular front, for example, the Montessori School of San Antonio offers mixed-age classrooms and a “whole child” education approaches for elementary- and middle schoolage children. The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Antonio oversees 30 schools. Among them is Mount Sacred Heart School, a FRIEND US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazine210

Charter School Choices San Antonio parents can also shop more than 20 tuitionfree public charter schools in the city. Charter schools are expanding their base in San Antonio. KIPP (Knowledge Is Power Program) Schools, which opened the program’s first campus in San Antonio in 2003, last year opened its fifth school. A sixth school will open this summer. Basis School San Antonio has two campuses in San Antonio for grades 5 through 8, and the school plans to serve grades 5 through 12 by 2018. At Basis School San Antonio, middle school students study classes in logic, Latin, algebra and other subjects once considered high school-level courses. “In 5th grade, students last year read Beowulf,” says head of school Tiffany O’Neill. “I read Beowulf as a junior in high school.” Basis students begin studying physics in 6th grade. “By the time our kids get to high school, they already have a jump start on what other high school students are doing,” O’Neill says. “Our campuses are college preparatory. We start with high-level concepts early.” At San Antonio Technology Academy, an open-enrollment charter high school, the focus is on advanced computer skills in addition to traditional courses. “We call our teachers learning engineers, and we call our students scholars,” says Principal Ben Johnson. His school also offers flexible hours to accommodate working students.

On the technology front, the goal is to provide students with computer-training classes that can lead to careers and college. “The thing about computer repair and computer networking is that those are the new woodshop and drafting and architecture classes that used to be prevalent in the school system. These are courses that will help those students get blue collar jobs,” Johnson says. “They’re also gateways to white collar jobs in terms of actually programming the computers.” Students who continue in higher EDUCATING BOYS FOR LIFE SINCE 1886

education will already have a marketable skill when they enroll in college, he says. The school won a major grant for the current school year to provide a tablet computer to every student, as well as to support college readiness programs for students and parents. “We want to give back to the community,” Johnson says.

Redefining School Districts Bexar County’s 15 public school districts, of course, dominate the local education scene by the sheer size of their budgets and enrollment numbers. San Antonio’s largest, the Northside Independent School District, enrolls more than 100,000 students and is the fourth-largest public school district in Texas. These traditional neighborhood schools have embraced innovative approaches to education, including magnet programs that zero in on the needs of students interested in law, the arts, technology, science and other fields. Northside defines its Business Careers High School as a “school within a school” on the campus of Oliver Wendell Holmes High School. The North East Independent School District’s North East School of the Arts is a magnet program at Robert E. Lee High School that focuses on cinema, creative writing, dance, and other arts fields. The 17-year-old program has produced so many professional actors, screenwriters, dancers and directors; The Hollywood Reporter last fall named it one of the country’s top 10 high school-based “launch pads for teenage talent.” San Antonio Independent District (SAISD), which enrolls more than 50,000 students, has magnet programs ranging from the city’s only International Baccalaureate Diploma program, based at Burbank High School, to magnet programs at middle schools. SAISD has 13 in-district charter schools. While girls-only and boys-only schools were once the domain of private schools, SAISD has the city’s only all-girls public school – Our Kids Jan 2015 —Women’s Leadership Academy.

EDUCATION DIRECTORY Some still remember when a high school diploma was the big prize for finishing the 12th grade. San Antonio’s Alamo Colleges district reports that 82 percent of students enrolled in the Early College High School program at SAISD and Judson Independent School District in 2013 earned an associate’s degree or technical certificate in addition to their high school diploma. The program is a partnership with the local community college district. High school students can also earn college credit through Advanced Placement (AP) programs that now are the norm at middle and high schools. Last fall, the Northside and North East school districts were named to the national Advanced Placement District Honor Roll by The College Board. The Northside district has more than 16,000 middle and high school students enrolled in AP courses.

Navigating Choices Gail Saunders of San Antonio, a former classroom teacher and high school principal who now is an independent tutor for private and public school kids, says parents can begin with basic questions when considering where to enroll their children. “Is my child being accepted? Is it financially feasible? Some private schools are so expensive; only the affluent can have access,” Saunders says. Distance is also a factor, she adds. “Is it close?” Time away from structured learning is important, too, Saunders believes. “I’m an advocate for play,” she says. “You can learn a lot through play.”

Saunders welcomed visits by parents of prospective students when she was a principal. Today, she advises parents in search of the best school for their children to visit local campuses. “In my opinion, if you can walk into a school and you feel it’s a happy place, that’s where you begin,” she says. “The child is there eight hours a day. That’s a long time to be in an environment that’s not a positive environment.” Renee Haines is a San Antonio freelance writer.

Yes They Can Finding Fitness Options for Disabled Youth By Bonny Osterhage

Think back to your childhood for a moment. Were you ever picked last when sides were chosen at recess? Were you ever made fun of for your lack of athleticism? Did you ever not make the team? Chances are that you have been “left out” at least once and, if you have, then you remember how awful it feels. For many children with disabilities, however, feeling “left out” is a way of life. And though they may have certain limitations, the capacity to feel is not one of them, and being singled out for being “different” hurts just as much for these children as it does for their able bodied peers. San Antonio has many programs and facilities that address this issue by offering children with special needs a chance to participate in group and individualized sports, or simply get a good workout at a local gym. The benefits to their physical health are great, but greater still are the benefits to their confidence and self esteem.

Kinetic Kids Samuel Stangle was just 18 months old when he was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. In kindergarten, while the other kids were running around at recess, he sat in the dirt and played alone, because the playground was not wheelchair accessible. His mother, Jennifer, recalls explaining to her avid football fan that he would not be able to participate in his favorite sport—a concept that Samuel had difficulty understanding. “He has always wanted to be part of a team and to be involved with his peers,” says Jennifer. “We thought he would never have that opportunity.” Fast forward to today where Samuel, who is now 14-yearsold and a freshman at Clark High School, is a member of both the Junior Varsity tennis team and the track and field team. “He is doing things we never thought he would get to do,” says Jennifer happily. “He has friends and teammates that now know him and watch out for him. It has removed the stigma for him of being ‘different.’” Part of Samuel’s involvement in team sports stemmed from 22

Our Kids Magazine | January 2015

his participation in Kinetic Kids, an organization co-founded by pediatric physical therapist Tracey Fontenot in 2001. “I realized at that time that there were no options for exercise in a social environment for these kids,” Tracey said of her reason for founding the organization that serves children ages 18 months to 18 years. “We wanted to carry on with the physical therapy aspect, but also provide them with the social aspect and the inclusion.” Kinetic Kids began with only a wheelchair baseball team, but has since expanded to include basketball, cheerleading, dance, golf, gymnastics, swimming, soccer, and football. Children are separated into divisions based on disability, and classes are tailored accordingly. “These kids can play sports just like any other kids,” says Tracey. “They just have to have modifications and adjustments.” FRIEND US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazine210

STRAPS Designed for disabled individuals of all ages, The South Texas Regional Adaptive and Paralympic Sports (STRAPS) has been in existence for three years, and offers adaptive recreational and competitive sports for athletes with physical (not developmental) disabilities. Wheelchair soccer, football and softball are available for children of all ages, while the junior wheelchair basketball is designed for junior high and high school students who wish to compete. A power soccer program is in place for those in electric wheelchairs, and a sport called “goal ball” is offered to the visually impaired. “It’s similar to soccer except the ball has a bell in it and you roll it,” describes Wendy Gumbert, STRAPS sports coordinator. All of the STRAPS practices are held at Morgan’s Wonderland and competitions are statewide. “When we started, there were plenty of programs that focused on adapted sports for military, or our wounded service members, but not really any that were open to all community members,” says Wendy. “STRAPS filled that void.” Love, All Disabled kids who prefer individual over group sports have a unique opportunity in tennis because not only can they compete one-on-one, they can compete with the able bodied. “You can’t really put a person in a wheelchair in a group sport like basketball with able bodied teammates,” says Rick Byrd, wheelchair tennis instructor at the Barshop Jewish Community Center. “Wheelchair tennis is an integrated sport in that you can play doubles with an able bodied partner, or play against an able bodied opponent.” Rick who has been in a wheelchair since 1997 due to a rare bone disease, understands firsthand the need for those with physical disabilities to be able to participate in sports. “People in chairs are conscious of the fact that we are ‘different,’” he says. “Participating in a sport creates inclusivity and builds a confidence that extends beyond the playing field.”

Hitting the Gym Not every child wants to play sports, disabled or not. But that doesn’t mean they should lead a sedentary lifestyle. Childhood obesity is a big problem in this country, and what people don’t often realize is that children with physical disabilities are at an even greater risk due to their limited mobility. Gyms like the Tri-Point YMCA offer options for disabled members that range from anti-gravity treadmills to a series of wheelchair accessible weight machines, and personal trainers who are qualified to work with this population. By offering the right tools and supervision, facilities like Tri-Point make it easier for those with physical limitations to stay as healthy as possible. “I had one client who was primarily wheelchair bound, but she was able to walk on our anti-gravity treadmill,” says Chris Ortiz, personal trainer at Tri-Point YMCA. “That was a great moment.” Chris has worked with several disabled youths through the “Get Fit Texas” program. Although implemented by the Epilepsy Foundation, the program provides a 12-week health and wellness program to individuals with a variety of special needs. Through the program, Chris addressed things like range of motion, and maximizing the individual’s ability to move as much as possible. He also addressed an even bigger issue for anyone who is starting an exercise regimen—motivation. “Imagine how hard it is for an able bodied person to stay engaged in exercise, and then imagine that for someone whose mobility is limited,” he says. To help with that, Chris looks for the “carrots,” or the things that make these young people want to succeed. Whether it’s the desire to participate in a sport, the desire to improve their existing performance, the desire to stay healthy, or simply the desire for inclusion, everyone has something that motivates them, and Chris offers positive encouragement along the way. “Everyone has limitations,” he says. “All you can do is work as hard as you can to maximize your body’s complete health and be proud of what you can do every day.” Bonny Osterhage is a San Antonio freelance writer and mother of two boys.

Special Delivery

By Jessica Burshtynskyy

Birth Options for Expectant Mothers For many first time moms, childbirth can seem overwhelming. These first-timers can get some peace of mind by familiarizing themselves with the variety of options available ahead of time so they know what they prefer when their baby’s birth day arrives.

Locations Hospitals have been the most common choice of birthing place in the United States for the past few generations. In the hospital, mothers and their babies have immediate access to emergency care should any problems arise during or immediately after birth. Many factors, including the high rate of Cesarean sections nationally--and speculation as to their necessity, have led some moms to consider other birthing options in hopes of having a less clinical experience and avoiding unnecessary interventions. Birth centers focus on providing the mother with a more home-like birthing atmosphere. Generally, people who work in a birth center have more experience with and support for natural childbirth. Mothers are typically assisted by midwives and doulas in birth centers, although some also have physicians. Should an emergency arise, the mother will be transferred to the nearest hospital. Home births tend to be very controversial and are illegal in some states. Although some studies have shown that in low-risk pregnancies they can be safe, most physicians strongly advise against home births because of the risks associated with having limited access to immediate medical care. Women who select this option appreciate the ability to control more of the experience. Mothers who deliver at home are generally assisted by midwives and can transfer to the nearest hospital in an emergency.

Types of pain relief Pain relief is a personal decision for a woman. And, since plans can change during the actual birth, it is important to be familiar with all the options, whether they are natural or pharmaceutical. Natural childbirth refers to women going through the 24

Our Kids Magazine | January 2015

birthing process without any medical pain relief. Women undertaking natural childbirth typically use various physical positions and breathing techniques to cope with the pain. Some women find that going through labor without medications helps to speed up the labor process while also reducing the need and risk of interventions. Analgesics can be used to temporarily lessen the pain without eliminating it. In some cases, the patient can even have control over the amount of medication they receive. Side effects associated with these types of medicines can include nausea, drowsiness, and difficulty concentrating for the mother as well as temporary effects on the baby’s heart rate. Anesthetics are medicines that can offer complete numbness and can be used either locally or regionally as needed. Regional anesthetics, such as epidurals, are one of the most common forms of pain management used in childbirth. An epidural typically offers complete pain relief while allowing the mother to remain fully awake during labor. The epidural can cause a decrease in blood pressure, fever, severe headaches, soreness, and a small risk of the anesthetic entering the spinal fluid, making it difficult to breathe.

Types of deliveries Before going into childbirth, women should familiarize themselves with the requirements of their insurance companies so they understand what will be covered and can plan accordingly. Vaginal childbirth is how most babies are born. The vaginally-born baby can receive numerous benefits, including both a lower risk of respiratory problems and the picking up of beneficial bacteria during the birthing process. Additionally, most women who deliver vaginally will have a shorter recovery period and lower risks of complications in future pregnancies. There are some risks for problems arising during vaginal childbirth including the risk for tearing in the perineum. Water birth is a form of vaginal childbirth involving the baby being birthed under that which has become an increasingly popular option. They generally take place either in home births or birthing centers, although a few hospitals now offer FRIEND US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazine210

water births. The water is believed to help with pain relief, delivery, and easing the child into the world. There are risks of infection, contamination and the infant breathing in water. Cesarean sections are a common procedure, but they are still major surgery. The mother will typically have either a spinal block, epidural, or general anesthesia. In addition to the risks of the anesthetic, there are also risks of blood clots, adhesions and infection. The pain and recovery from this surgery tends to be difficult; but, for the women and their babies who require these surgeries, they can be lifesaving. Scheduled C-sections - May be prearranged for a number of reasons. If the baby has a known health problem that will be further complicated by a vaginal delivery, the doctors may recommend a C-section. A breech or transverse baby may also be delivered via C-section to avoid complications. In a minority of situations, a first time mother might request a C-section, but these are generally discouraged.

Birthing attendants Obstetricians are the first choice of many women for their prenatal care and delivery. The ob-gyn doctor will be trained in the medical aspects of childbirth. Some women who have low-risk pregnancies, however, prefer working with someone who is oriented more towards natural childbirth.

Maid

Midwives typically assist mothers-to-be in natural childbirth. There are a number of different types of midwives who have received varying amounts and types of education. Some are nurses who have received additional education in childbirth, while others have gone through various agencies and training programs. It is important to always investigate the background of the midwife as well as any local regulations regarding their employment. Doulas are often hired by pregnant women as a means of support during the birthing process. A doula has been trained in helping women through childbirth and advocating for their needs. Doulas are often very knowledgeable about managing pain naturally and can help with birth positions and exercises. Birthing partners can be the woman’s partner or another important person in her life who accompanies her at the birth to provide support and assistance when needed. Giving birth for the first time can be one of the most significant events in a woman’s life. Pregnant women should take the time to review their options and discuss their concerns with their doctors and partners in advance so they can feel prepared when the time arrives. Children’s Vegetable calendar Garden Program

San Antonio’s Botanical Garden is proud to present one of the nation’s oldest youth gardening programs again in Spring 2015. From 8 a.m. to noon each Saturday morning February 21 through June 6, children ages 8-13 can get their hands on horticulture with the help of the Garden’s partner organizations. The Children’s Vegetable Garden Program is an opportunity for kids to grow their own vegetables and ornamental plants with the help of instructors from the Texas A&M AgriLIFE Extension Service and Bexar County Master Gardeners, as well as other volunteer organizations. Each child is allotted a 3.5’x28’ garden plot and can have fun growing different types of seeds, vegetables, and ornamental annual flowers. Youngsters can also earn their Junior Master Gardener certification by participating in fun, hands-on activities each week after they have tended their garden. In order to gain the most from the learning experience and to help ensure successful growing, participants are required to attend all sessions (two absences are allowed). Families are welcome to share the gardening experience with their child. A parent or guardian must stay with their child. Cost is $30 per child or $40 for two children to share a plot. Donations welcome. For more information, email timothy.roan@sanantonio.gov or please call 210-207-3278.
