HAVE FUN WITH US THIS SUMMER! Indian Trace Elementary School students Charles Horowitz (front row, left), Dylan Cook, Alessia Cook, Sydney Novaro, Kai Hayen, Noah Rabinovitch (second row, left), Madeleine Jones and Kelsey Cook, along with parent volunteer Tracey Cook, display the letter, certificate and flag the school received from members of the military for its generous donation.

S

tudents at Indian Trace Elementary School learned a valuable lesson in humanity. With Halloween and Veteran’s Day falling so close together, students were encouraged to donate their “unwanted” Halloween candy to send to American troops serving overseas. In addition, students made and wrote cards thanking the troops for their service. Around 50 boxes were mailed out in November to soldiers connected to families or teachers at the Weston school. While many of the classes received emails of thanks, parent volunteer Tracey Cook recently received a special package. She helped spearhead this project, inspired by her brother-in-law who is serving in the U.S. Navy. Cook received a letter of thanks from the men and women of the Air Force Special Operations Command, along with an American flag carried onboard aircraft during a sortie in support of the Global War on Terrorism, which she gave to the school. In the letter, the military officers praised the students on their generous donation. “Your willingness to share your Halloween candy demonstrates a spirit of selflessness that is commendable. Your letters and gifts remind us all of why we have volunteered to defend our country.” Not only did the students’ gesture bring cheer to the American servicemen and women, but also to children living in war-torn regions. The officers wrote that they shared the Halloween candy with children from a local orphanage. The flag and letter are now on display in the school’s office for all to admire and remember the generosity of the Indian Trace students. This project was such a success, the PTA is now working with students to collect comfort items requested by the troops, such as water “flavoring” packets, small travel pillows and socks.
