About the Cover The Annual Report cover this year celebrates 65 years of The Fund and the work our Scholars do. Seen in the top photo is a group of current Ouimet Scholars with young people from the City of Boston’s Summer Golf Management Program held at George Wright and William F. The bottom photo is the classic shot of Mr. Ouimet with the original group of 13 Ouimet Scholars in 1949. On this page are some of the Franklin Park group photos that have graced the cover over the years. The Fund is proud of coming from that small class of caddies to having helped 5,200 students with over $28 Million in Scholarships awarded since then.

A Message from the President October, 2014 Dear Friends of the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund, We have come a long way since 1949 when 13 Scholars received a total of $4,600 in awards. Sixty-five years later, we transition from a very successful Centennial Celebration and reap great benefit and momentum from investments we made in our people, technology, and social media over the past few years. They have allowed the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund to continue to grow in so many ways, and we are delighted to announce an increase in awards of $100,000 from $1.5 to $1.6 Million. Growth needs teamwork and partners. It starts with our supporting Clubs, their executives, boards, members, and Ouimet Chairs who help and encourage the young Scholars who work there. You participate in developing both the Centennial Bag Tag Program and the Golf Marathon in exceptional ways. On the Ouimet side, I want to give a special thanks to Club Relations Chair, Jim Murphy, Assistant Executive Director Colin McGuire, Events & Club Relations Coordinator Ross Blacker, and their committee – they deserve thanks and congratulations for dedication, and best wishes toward continued success. Speaking of the Golf Marathon, we graciously thank our longtime Board member, Walter Lankau, and his excellent staff in making Stow Acres our home for the past 22 years! The Scholars and other volunteers who participated this year raised $290,000, and to do it they had to play in some pretty nasty weather conditions. The Golf Marathon has now cumulatively raised more than $5 Million for Scholarships since 1992 - a milestone achievement. Since I reported to you last October, our “Investing in Lifetimes” Centennial Campaign, set in motion to assist our inner-city Ouimet Scholars, continues to grow tremendously. As part of the program we have greatly strengthened our inner-city outreach in the past year with special partnerships both in Boston and Worcester that are leading to strong increases in inner-city applicants. We are also excited to announce that we have reached the halfway mark towards our $5 Million goal, adding exceptional donors who are excited to ‘give back’ by establishing new Endowed Scholarships, and also receiving additional commitments from existing donors. Understandably, we realize we still have a way to go, but we are very optimistic that with your assistance, we will surpass our goals. This campaign has been Dick Reilly’s passion since he proposed to develop a Centennial Capital Campaign specifically designed to further assist our inner-city Scholars. With Dick as the Chair, the assistance from our development friends, Duffy Brent and Allen Peckham, our very own Bob Donovan, Executive Director, and Danielle Pourbaix, our Development & Alumni Relations Coordinator, this committee has done a fantastic job. Our goal is to bring our Scholarship awards from $1.5 Million to $2 Million over the next few years to keep up with the ‘unmet need’ of our scholars. The Campaign has grown greatly – we now have 117 Endowed Scholarships approaching $10 Million in the endowment. The yield from those Endowed Scholarships has allowed us to increase our awards and help drive us toward the $2 Million annual goal. Our great success in fundraising and increase in the endowment helps us continue as one of the largest scholarship programs in the

region. With the great commitment of Ouimet Alumnus Jim Moriarty, our Scholarship Chair, our Director of Scholarships, Michelle Edwards, our Database Coordinator, Caroleena Vargas, and their committee, we have enjoyed one of the more successful application and interview years. The great teamwork and newer technology and software improvements enable the entire application process to be online and linked with our database, making it so much more accessible for applicants and current scholars. We also owe thanks to our Finance Manager, Jacquie Gouveia, who has made similar upgrades to help integrate our financial reporting. These important steps now Terry presenting Ouimet Memorial Champion Matt Parziale with a plaque at make everything so efficient for our Scholars, parents, and the Woodland GC in 2013. Board members and volunteers who give their time to assist in the many steps of the scholarship process. Of course, the most heartwarming part of it is the collection of notes of appreciation from the Scholars, parents and grandparents each year. We are so blessed to have many great people who believe in the mission of The Fund, and I must acknowledge a few additional people that have given so much –Scott Adler, who stepped down as Treasurer after many years of service but continues to serve on the Board, Todd Wetzel, for his work with the Ouimet Society Lifetimes and our programs in Worcester; Anne Marie Tobin, who chaired the Scholarship Committee for many years; John MacKinnon, who has been an incredible partner with us providing our Scholars personal development and training under the renowned Dale Carnegie program; Dick Connolly, who continues his incredible guidance, dedication, and support of The Fund; and lastly, a special thanks to my Board of Directors, and our entire staff -you have been terrific to work with, and I thank you for your patience and support. It has been an extraordinary pleasure to serve as President of the Ouimet Scholarship Fund, and I have enjoyed it all so much. I come away with a whole new appreciation as to what it really means to be part of this great organization; but working through the Centennial, I also learned so much more about Mr. Ouimet, and the history. He certainly will always be admired for the greatness of his golf game but as he often said, “ …of all the things I have accomplished, I am proudest of the establishment of the Ouimet Scholarship Fund …”. So, in closing, thank you for your continued support. We still have so much more to do for these young men and women, and if possible, please consider establishing an Endowed Scholarship in your family’s name, or a Lifetime Membership in the Ouimet Society. It will be an “Investment in Lifetimes.” Warm regards,

T

he Richard F. Connolly, Jr. Distinguished Service Award is the Ouimet Fund’s highest award for an individual with The Fund and the presentation of it is normally a highlight at the Annual Banquet.

The Connolly Award was established in 2000 in honor of Mr. Connolly, a Ouimet Scholarship Alumnus, former President, and current Board Member and Trustee who has proudly served the Ouimet Fund for nearly 40 years. For the past 36 years, he has been the Chairman of the Francis Ouimet Memorial Tournament. He has also underwritten the production of the Richard F. Connolly, Sr. Trophy, the Ouimet Memorial’s permanent trophy that is one of the most unique in golf. Mr. Connolly has been the driving force in starting the Francis Ouimet Lifelong Contributions to Golf Award Annual Banquets, and helping arrange the sponsorship of Morgan Stanley Smith Barney and other companies. He has also established an endowed Ouimet Scholarship in his family’s name and helped The Fund in many other ways. The Connolly Award is presented annually in his honor.

Club Relations Program

T

he backbone of the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund’s fundraising continues to be the support from our clubs and their thousands of members who contribute annually. The Ouimet Fund worked diligently in 2014 in furthering its special Centennial Bag Tag Program.

Bag Tag Program

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the nearly 100 clubs who have annually supported our Bag Tag Program. At each club, members make a tax-deductible donation and receive their Ouimet Bag Tag for the season. This has been The Fund’s primary fundraising Ouimet Fund Assistant Executive Director, Colin McGuire (r), presents Wellesley CC’s leadership with their vehicle since 1955. The tradition of the members personalized Francis & Eddie statuette in recognition of being one of 25 clubs to join the Centennial Bag Tag supporting the Ouimet Bag Tag Program has led to Program. substantial Scholarship assistance directly impacting 5,000+ fantastic young Ouimet Scholars. As you may also know, The Fund continues its commitment to award all Bag Tag donations as the first dollars in the annual Scholarship pool.

Centennial Bag Tag Program

Clubs across the state have the opportunity to distinguish themselves among their peers through increased support in the Centennial Club Program. In turn, our Club Relations Committee and staff are also thrilled to increase recognition of these Centennial Clubs of the Bag Tag Program. Twenty-five clubs (shown on following page) have joined with an increased per member donation and a five-year commitment to reach $100. Members receive beautiful “permanent” club name engraved metal tags, a Francis & Eddie statuette for their club, and recognition and priority at Ouimet events and in publications. Coupling the Bag Tag Program with the tremendous growth of the Endowed Scholarship program will be the two pillars for The Fund in reaching toward a goal of $2 Million in annual Scholarships in the near future!

Ouimet Chairs & Club Contacts

The role of Ouimet Chair remains a critical link between our club donors and The Fund. A heartfelt thank you to the Ouimet Chairs who volunteer so much of their time to - among other things - spread the mission, drive our programs, and promote the Scholarship opportunities to their young employees each year. It continues to be a tremendously helpful experience for our committee and staff to meet with Ouimet Chairs and club leadership periodically. Throughout the year, the Ouimet Chairs, the Pro Shop and GM staff, Presidents and other members at the clubs work with the Ouimet Staff and various committees on so many programs. The Bag Tag Program and Golf Marathon implementations, for instance, receives some great “personalization” from these contacts, both in the donation and recognition side of the operation. Over fifty of our supporting clubs prominently hang the provided Scholar Plaques and share the PDF version via club email/website. Some clubs also hold an annual “info night” where young employees, their parents, and members are invited to a presentation and Q&A session with a member of the Ouimet staff or Club Relations Committee. These prove to be great ways to spread the word about the Scholarship opportunities as well as a chance to say thank you to the club. The Fund also provides caddie training materials to those who distribute to their caddie corps each season. Annually, we are also generously hosted by 7-10 different clubs as a site for one of our outings, a Fund board meeting, or our multiple Scholar Applicant Interview sessions. So many volunteers and interviewers come from these memberships and are making a great impact for us. We are tremendously grateful to our supporting clubs and are thrilled to be able to help so many Scholars across the state.

For clubs interested in meeting with The Fund, having a Ouimet presentation at your club, or joining the Bag Tag Program/Centennial Bag Tag Program, please contact Colin McGuire at colinm@ouimet.org.

Ouimet Chair of the Year Award

T

he Ouimet Chair serves in a variety of capacities at the approximately 100 Massachusetts clubs that actively support the Ouimet Fund. Ouimet Chairs coordinate sales of the Ouimet Bag Tags at each club, which is The Fund’s most important fundraising source. They may help in the development of caddie programs, recruit young workers to apply for the Ouimet Scholarship, interview prospective applicants and arrange for their club to be an interview site. Ouimet Chairs may also help in a variety of other fundraising roles, including recruiting members into the Ouimet Society, introducing prospects to The Fund who might endow scholarships or make other major gifts, arranging for their club to participate in the Golf Marathon and the Annual Banquet, or hosting events.

T

Jack McDaniel – 2014 Recipient

he Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund awarded its 2014 Ouimet Chair of the Year Award to Jack McDaniel of Worcester Country Club. The presentation was made at The Fund’s 66th Annual Meeting at Wollaston Golf Club on October 20, 2014. Mr. McDaniel, Founder and Managing Director of iSUN International Group, has been the Ouimet Chair at Worcester Country Club for the past two years, further building on that club’s tremendous legacy of caddie and Ouimet support. Jack has quickly established himself as one of the top Ouimet supporters. In 2013 he put on Jack McDaniel a tremendous post-Marathon campaign to bring WCC to the number one position in fundraising for the Ouimet Marathon. WCC had been seventh the previous year, but McDaniel’s personal contact work brought it to number one, knocking off six-time prior champ Oyster Harbors Club. He is a Ouimet Society Lifetime Member and has aggressively recruited several others in adding to the already impressive total WCC has as part of its stellar WCC Endowed Scholarship. He has offered to mentor other Ouimet Chairs, recruits and is an advocate for WCC Ouimet Scholar applicants. He also hosts/coordinates applicant interview in Central Massachusetts, following up the meetings with personal calls of congratulations to the families and continually makes suggestions to improve the process. “Jack has been a great representative of the Ouimet Fund in many ways. We are thrilled to be able to recognize him and Worcester Country Club for they do. This is the second Ouimet Chair at WCC to receive this honor, as Mike Grilli won in 2008. This Award is a small way of saying thanks for all of Jack’s help and great example of what an individual can do,” said Ouimet Fund President Terry Kennedy.

22nd Annual Ouimet Golf Marathon Oyster Harbors Regains Top Spot

O

yster Harbors Club raised $32,659 to regain its top spot and pace the field at the 22nd Annual Ouimet Golf Marathon held in mid-August at the only home it’s ever known, Stow Acres CC. The club in Osterville has now taken home top honors six of the past seven years. This edition of the Marathon saw it eclipse the $5 Million mark in all-time monies raised and the 2014 installment of the event raised $290,000. In addition to Oyster Harbors, three teams, Worcester CC, The Country Club and Oakley CC all raised over $19,000. Many clubs experienced their all-time fundraising highs due in large part to enhanced communications and the online giving platform in its second year of existence. The weather conditions were anything but ideal as nearly two inches of rain pelted Stow Acres. Both the golfers and the course stood up strongly to Mother Nature. The Marathon is well-established as the top event of its kind in America, a true point of pride for The Fund.

Tough, But Successful Day

“This was an extremely difficult day with over an inch of rain, but everyone kept plugging for the Ouimet Fund. The players and Walt Lankau of Stow Acres are really to be commended for their fantastic efforts. The fact that their fortitude brought us to $5 Million since the beginning of the Marathon makes their work even more gratifying,” Terry Kennedy, Ouimet Fund President said.

Golf Scoring

Kevin Lynch of Tedesco and Ed McMellen of Oakley tied for low pro at seven-under par with scores relative to par being kept for the first 100 holes completed. Ouimet Alum Colin LeStrange ‘06, representing TheHelpU.com was low gross at two-under and has also played the Marathon six times. David Lessner of Lessner’s Loopers was low net at seven-under par in his very first Marathon. Brian Golden, representing Winchester Country Club, teed it up in his 20th Marathon, completing 150 holes. Several other clubs, who had date conflicts or couldn’t make it due to weather, played later at their own sites in calmer conditions. Be sure to contact The Fund if you are interested in accepting the 100 hole challenge in 2015.

Ouimet Society Outings Ouimet Society Outings and Membership Programs

O

nce again, the Ouimet Society delivered a pair of optimal golf experiences to its members, staging an outing at Plymouth Country Club in mid-June and heading north to the picturesque Golf Club at Turner Hill on what amounted to a beautiful fall day in early October. Ouimet Society membership has been supported for nearly 45 years by Annual Members, as well as Lifetime Member donors. As the old adage goes, membership does have its privileges as the aforementioned groups receive a personalized bag tag as well as invitations to special events and outings. Those who take part in these events year after year constantly remark how they are a true highlight of their annual golf calendar, always delivering a true and fair test of golf along with time spent interacting with other strong supporters of The Fund.

Plymouth Country Club

The Society’s year kicked off at Plymouth as nearly 60 players The group of (l to r) Bill Helm, Dr. Tim O’Connor, Ouimet Club Chair Bill Kelleher and Connor Bryant receive their prizes from Danielle Pourbaix, took to the challenging layout. As is the case with all Society outings, Ouimet’s Coordinator, Development & Alumni Relations at the Ouimet Society a student speaker was present in this case Chris Porter, a junior at outing at Plymouth in June. Wentworth Institute of Technology who did his golf service at the host course both as a caddie and pro shop attendant. A number of special presentations were made including an achievement award to Dr. Lee Othon paying tribute to his many years of outstanding and dedicated service. The father and sons team of Jim and Kevin Lynch and Andrew and Steve Sypek claimed the Ellison Trophy.

Golf Club at Turner Hill

The scene then shifted north to Ipswich and the Golf Club at Turner Hill for an early October date. The field totaled nearly 100 as NEPGA pros added their expertise and knowledge to four-person amateur teams. Connor McDonagh-Poh, a senior at nearby Salem State who did his golf service at Holden Hills, was the student speaker. The team of David and Holly Bruce, Joe Onstott and Patricia Campbell and Woodland GC assistant professional Tom Doherty took home the newly-updated MacMillan Trophy. Larry Hamberger, an assistant pro at Bellevue GC fired a one-under par 71 to take home the professional division crown.

The winning team of (l-r) David Bruce, Woodland GC Assistant Pro Tom Doherty, Joe Onstott, Patricia Campbell and Holly Bruce flank Board President Terry Kennedy (center in green tie) and Danielle Pourbaix, The Fund’s Coordinator of Development and Alumni Relations. Francis Ouimet Memorial Tournament Whelan, Carey and Ford Capture Titles

H

istory was made at the 2014 Ouimet Memorial Tournament as Kevin Carey became just the second player to take home the coveted chair in both the Championship and Senior divisions, capturing the Senior Division crown to go along with his champ division victory in 2000. He joins Jack Kearney (1992, 2010) in the exclusive club. Jack Whelan made it two titles in three years in the hotly-contested Championship Division and 15-year-old Julia Ford prevailed in a one-hole playoff over gritty veteran Pamela Kuong to capture the Women’s Division crown. Once again, the OMT featured a field chock-full of experience and skill as nearly half of the men on the MGA’s Player of the Year list teed it up. Eight states were also represented as the event, under the direction of longtime chair Dick Connolly, continues to assert itself as a must-play for top amateurs summer after summer. This year’s installment was played at Dedham Country and Polo Club and Wellesley Country Club before heading to its traditional final-round site, Woodland Golf Club, Mr. Ouimet’s home course. Golf Legend Arnold Palmer once again served at Honorary Chair.

Championship Division

Whelan never looked up at anyone on the leaderboard, sleeping on leads after days one and two. The senior at St. Lawrence University led by three after an opening-round 65, with a pack of five chasing all in the clubhouse with 68’s. On day 2, Whelan shot a one-over par 71 for a two-day total of 136 and a one-shot cushion over Dedham Golf and Polo’s Patrick Frodigh and by three shots over a four players, notably Woodland’s Alex Jeffers who recorded a double eagle on Wellesley’s 17th, holing out a 3-wood from 264 yards. The final day saw Whelan, with his father Bill on the bag, play well early and hang on late, withstanding charges from veterans Herbie Aikens, Doug Clapp and Mike Dunham as well as Frodigh, the only player to card two rounds in the 60’s and Hatherly’s T.J. McNulty, who briefly held a share of the lead, to win by two. “I stayed patient and hit it well all week,” Whelan said. “This is a great event with lots of history and it’s great to see my name among the winners once again.”

Cynthia Wilcox, a Ouimet Director and daughter of Eddie Lowery, presents the Lowery Trophy to Senior Division winner Kevin Carey.

Alpine (RI) Country Club’s Alexis Florio fired a 78 to finish a single shot away from the proceedings. Ford and Kuong headed to Woodland’s par-4 first with Ford making par against Kuong’s double-bogey to capture the win. “This wasn’t a great summer for me so to come here and win is pretty special. This is a great tournament and I like playing it every year,” Ford said.

Battling a pinched nerve in his neck, Carey took advantage of two early birdies to claim victory over Nunez by two shots, besting Crawford and fellow Dennis Pines Golf Course representative Joe Walker by six. “I wouldn’t miss this for the world,” Carey said. “There was such a strong field this year and the golf courses were great. THE OUIMET TROPHIES The Ouimet Memorial Tournament began in 1968, one year after the death of Mr. Ouimet. The trophies for the Francis Ouimet Memorial Tournament are amongst the most unique in American golf and are kept on permanent display in the William F. Connell Golf Museum.

Connolly Trophy

The trophy for the Championship Division was inspired by the Silver Club display at the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, Scotland. The putter in the center belonged to Francis Ouimet. Ouimet’s opponents used the flanking clubs, or ones similar to those shown, when he won the historic playoff for the 1913 U.S. Open. On the left is a Harry Vardon type brassie and on the right is a Ted Ray “Mills-type” putter. All were gifts to the Ouimet Fund by Dr. Gary Wiren. The silver golf balls hanging from the club are inscribed with the year of each tournament and the champion’s name. The Champion is also presented with a silver ball and a stand on which to display it, and a photographic reproduction of the trophy with the dates, courses and his daily scores inscribed. The trophy was donated to the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund by Richard F. Connolly, Jr. in memory of his father, who died in 1991. Richard F. Connolly, Jr. is a Ouimet Alumnus who served as President of The Fund from 1981-84. He has been Chair of the Ouimet Memorial since 1979.

Lowery Trophy

The Ouimet Memorial Tournament started a Senior Division in 1999 to celebrate The Fund’s 50th Anniversary, and named it after Eddie Lowery, Mr. Ouimet’s caddie in the legendary 1913 U.S. Open. The permanent trophy is a magnificent 21-inch bronze reproduction of the famed picture of Francis Ouimet and Eddie Lowery. Renowned sculptor Bob Pack of Houston, Texas, through a special licensing agreement with the Ouimet Fund, designed it. Mr. Pack contributed the statue for which a seveninch permanent base was made. The annual winner of the Lowery Division is presented with a nine-inch version of the statue, which Mr. Pack also sculpted.

Women’s Division Trophy

Ouimet Memorial Champions Jack Whelan (Championship Division), Julia Ford (Women’s Division) and Kevin Carey (Lowery Senior Division) proudly display the fruits of their labor following the 47th annual event.

The Ouimet Memorial Women’s Division was begun in 2004 under the guidance of then Ouimet President and seven-time WGAM champion Anne Marie Tobin. The trophy is a classic center piece glass bowl on a wooden base and the winner receives a smaller version.

Centennial Campaign Off to a Great Start Inner-City Program Reaches Half-Way Mark

T

he Ouimet Fund’s inner-city program made great strides in 2014 with expanded outreach programs in Boston and Worcester, a tripling of Boston Scholars and two more endowed scholarships dedicated exclusively to inner-city students. This was very gratifying to the dedicated Committee which has coordinated the Centennial Campaign: Investing in Lifetimes. Its goal has been to expand our financial resources by a minimum of $5 Million in order to reach an annual Scholarship total of $2 Million awarded, with an increase in inner-city awareness and aid. With a fantastic response from Friends of The Fund, the Campaign is well over the half-way mark at nearly $2.7 Million raised, 22 new Endowed Scholarships created and an increase in total annual scholarships of $100,000 to $1.6 Million.

To reiterate our opening statement, here is a look at our goals and progress: • Expand Scholarships for Inner-City and Minority Youth – We have gone from three Scholars in Boston to nine with two new inner-city endowed awards. • Increase Annual Scholarships – We have increased our annual awards by $100,000. • Increase Endowed Scholarships – We have added 22 new endowed awards since the Campaign began, and endowed scholarships now account for 27% of our total awards.

Peter Jacobsen spoke to the guests at a Ouimet Fund cocktail reception at Quail West Golf and Country Club in Naples, Florida focusing on the Campaign.

Campaign Leadership

As part of the Centennial Campaign, the Ouimet Fund has built on its 19-year Boston program by strengthening partnerships with inner-city organizations, and reaching out to Richard Reilly (Chair) high schools, social agencies and guidance counselors. Eddie Lowery Bequest Society Make a Lasting Impact

I

n 2013, as part of its Centennial Campaign, the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund formally created the Eddie Lowery Bequest Society. This new group puts a focus on a new form of giving for the organization. The Society is pleased to recognize, as members of The Eddie Lowery Society, those individuals who have made a future commitment to The Fund through an estate gift. Planned (or bequest) gifts naming the Ouimet Fund as beneficiary through a will, trust agreement, life insurance policy or other deferred gift such as a 401(k) provide a vital resource for our Scholarship aid. If you would like to learn how you can include the Ouimet Fund as part of your estate plan and join this very special group of supporters, please contact The Fund’s Executive Director, Bob Donovan, at bobd@ouimet.org.

We are pleased to recognize and thank the following members of The Eddie Lowery Society: • Duffy Brent • Gloria O’Brien and the William G. O’Brien Scholarship Fund • Dorothy B. Holt Trust • Bob Jordan and the Mix-Jordan Scholarship Fund

Ouimet Museum Room Gets a New Look

D

id you know that a recreation of Francis Ouimet’s home library in Wellesley, Mass., lives on the grounds of TPC Boston? Since 2002, the William F. Connell Golf House & Museum has been home to the home to the Ouimet Fund, many of state’s top amateur golf organizations, the PGA Tour’s Deutsche Bank Championship and the Ouimet Museum Room. The recently revamped Ouimet Room within the Massachusetts Golf Museum displays many photographs, mementos, publications and special merchandise from Francis Ouimet’s great life and golf career. It also features videos, a display of the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund and its history since 1949. Special memorabilia from “The Greatest Game Ever Played” book and movie based on Mr. Ouimet’s historic 1913 U.S. Open victory & lifelong friendship with his 10-year-old caddie, Eddie Lowery, also lives here. In September, a new display was unveiled and dedicated as a remembrance of the many activities and programs The Fund conducted in celebrating Ouimet 100, the Centennial observation of his important 1913 U.S. Open victory and 1914 U.S. Amateur title. The Ouimet Room and Museum is wheelchair accessible and is open from 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM Monday – Friday and admission is complimentary.

The Denny Goodrich Honorary Ouimet Alumnus Award

T

he Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund renamed its “Honorary Alumnus Award” after Denny Goodrich when he retired from the Ouimet Fund’s Board of Directors in 2009 after 37 years of service. Mr. Goodrich, of Dedham Country and Polo Club, was the inaugural recipient of the award in 2003 and also the Ouimet Fund’s Richard F. Connolly, Jr. Distinguished Service Award’s awardee in its debut year of 2000. For 13 years, he served as the Vice Chair of the Ouimet Fund’s Annual Banquets. He was Ouimet President from 1990-1992. “Denny is the epitome of a Ouimet Alum, and this is a very small way to always remember all he has done for The Fund. His contributions have been immense,” said then Ouimet Fund President Richard J. Barrett when the award was re-named in his honor in 2009.

Peter Maich – 2014 Recipient The Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund’s Alumni Committee awarded its 2014 Denny Goodrich Ouimet Honorary Alumnus Award to Peter Maich, a long-time Ouimet Director who has supported the organization in many ways. Mr. Maich has been one of our longest continuously serving Ouimet Board Members since 1995. He has also been Chair of the Ouimet Annual Banquet since Arnold Palmer was the honoree in 1997, was Ouimet Development Chair for several years helping the original campaign, and has also served on the Ouimet Society, and other committees. As Banquet Chair, he developed many sponsorships including that of his former company, The TJX Companies. He has created an endowed scholarship in his late father’s name and assisted The Fund in various other ways. He was the 2005 recipient of The Fund’s Richard F. Connolly, Jr. Distinguished Service Award. He is a member of Wollaston and Cohasset Golf Clubs. Peter has been a tremendous Ouimet supporter and dedicated champion over the years. He and Denny Goodrich worked on so many Ouimet Fund programs, and they both symbolize the best a Peter Maich volunteer can be. Peter’s presence and input at board meetings throughout the years has been second to none and his leadership has been an asset across all areas of our organization. “We are greatly honored to recognize him,” said Terry Kennedy, Ouimet Fund President. The Award was presented at the Ouimet Annual Meeting at Wollaston Golf Club.

About the Award

The “Honorary Alumnus” designation seeks to acknowledge that there are many people who have been important to the Ouimet Fund and/or the game that either did not need assistance or did not apply for assistance when they went to college. Each year, the Alumni Committee conducts a nominating process with the Ouimet Directors, Trustees and Alumni Committee including requesting basic information and a paragraph or so on the Honorary Alumnus Award Recipients merits of the individual being nominated. The 2003 Denny Goodrich “service to golf” or great 2004 Dick Foley involvement with the game 2005 Jimmy Noris could be as a volunteer, as 2006 John MacKinnon their career, or possibly as a 2007 Jack Neville competitor. The candidate 2008 Jim & Lois Gaquin must have been generous 2009 Dave Adamonis, Sr. in their support of the 2010 Mike Haberl, Rick Johnson & Ed Walsh Ouimet Fund, either by 2011 Walt Lankau contributing financially or 2012 Phil Psaros by volunteer or exceptional 2013 Bob Travers, Jr. professional service. 2014

Student Support & Activities

T

he Ouimet Fund offers its Scholars three special participatory programs. Here’s a look at these opportunities:

Scholars Take Their Place Underneath The Straps

Another Deutsche Bank Championship, another year of the collaboration between The Fund and the event as current Scholars, Alumni and friends seized the opportunity to serve as caddies for the 12th year in succession. All in all, 35 Scholars and Alums comprised over one-third of the overall caddie corps, traversing the fairways of TPC Boston alongside PGA Tour standouts Billy Horschel, Brandt Snedeker and Adam Scott under sunny skies and gentle breezes. The Fund also received spots to show its Public Service Announcement on Golf Channel and NBC throughout Championship weekend.

Dale Carnegie

For the 16th year, Ouimet Scholars served as scorekeepers at the New England Chapter of the NFL Alumni’s Golf Classic held in early August at Indian Ridge CC. NFL Alumni New England Chapter Head, Dave O’Brien is seen far left with the Ouimet Scholars.

The 12th Annual Ouimet Dale Carnegie “Generation Next – Effective Leadership and Communications” course was again generously contributed by John MacKinnon, President of Performance Training, and coordinator of Dale Carnegie Training in the Boston area. Approximately 30 Ouimet Scholars graduated from the eight-week program. Mr. MacKinnon, a Ouimet Society Lifetime Member from Charles River CC, developed a program and donates free admission (a value of over $1,500) to Ouimet Scholars. Each year, graduates of the course report that it was one of the most beneficial they have ever taken. The Fund wishes to thank Mr. MacKinnon, Terry Carleton and Bentley University for contributing the meeting space.

Scholars Keep Score at NFL Alumni Event

Once again, for the 16th year, a group of Ouimet Scholars volunteered as scorers at the NFL Alumni/New England Chapter’s Annual Golf Outing contested at Indian Ridge CC in Andover. Scholars had the unique opportunity to ride alongside NFL living legends. Chapter representative Dave O’Brien again collaborated closely with The Fund to make the day a success. Abby Tobin ‘14, the recipient of the Chapter’s “Team Spirit” Scholarship and recent graduate of Wheaton College spoke at dinner on her involvement in golf and the award being instrumental in achieving her goals.

2014-2015 Ouimet Scholars

O

n the following pages we proudly list the 2014-2015 Francis Ouimet Scholarship recipients who represent the $1.6 Million in Scholarships awarded this year. Please note, there are some still-open cases as we go to press, which may not be listed. We believe that the Ouimet Scholarship program sees such incredible graduation results because of two main factors. First, the financial investment in the young men & women increases their ability to afford the tuition and remain enrolled. Secondly, the Scholars have a strong work ethic, having grown up working in golf at a young age, surrounded by leaders and role models at the clubs. In short, the Scholarship works because THEY work!
