Wake up, danger awaits!

The Golden Cockerel Composed by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov Libretto by Vladimir Belsky After the poem “The Fairy Tale of the Golden Cockerel” by Alexander Pushkin Jonathan Shames, Artistic Director and Conductor William Ferrara, Stage Director/English translation

8 p.m. Sept. 19, 20, 21 3 p.m. Sept. 22

Reynolds Performing Arts Center Old King Dodo lies awake all night worrying about a surprise attack on his kingdom. One day, a mysterious wizard appears and presents Dodo with a magic rooster that can see for thousands of miles and will crow whenever danger threatens. The delighted King sets the cock on a spire, and the entire kingdom settles down for a long nap. Before long, the cock sounds the alarm, and Dodo sends his less-than-enthusiastic sons off to war. The king goes back to sleep, but soon the cock crows again, and Dodo and his arthritic old Senators reluctantly gather their rusty armor and go off to war themselves. Pushkin’s silly political satire may turn out to be a “wake-up call” for us all! Presented in English. This production is suitable for all audiences.

Enjoy this Tony Award-winning musical, old chum, come to the cabaret!

Cabaret Book by Joe Masteroff, Music by John Kander Lyrics by Fred Ebb Directed by Lyn Cramer Music Direction by Paul Christman

8 p.m. Oct. 4, 5, 11, 12 3 p.m. Oct. 6, 13 Elsie C. Brackett Theatre

Welcome to the infamous Kit Kat Klub, where the garish Master of Ceremonies, expatriate entertainer Sally Bowles and a raucous ensemble take the stage nightly to tantalize the crowd to leave their troubles outside. But, as life in preWorld War II Germany grows more and more uncertain, will the decadent allure of Berlin nightlife be enough to get them through these dangerous times? Masteroff, Kander and Ebb created the musical for the stage based on John Van Druten’s 1951 play I Am a Camera, which was adapted from Christopher Isherwood’s novel Goodbye to Berlin. Cabaret opened on Broadway and in London in 1966, with Broadway revivals in 1987, 1998 and 2014. The original musical garnered eight Tony Awards, an Outer Critics Circle Award, and a New York Drama Critics Circle Award. The 1998 Broadway revival received four Tony Awards, three Drama Desk Awards, and 3 Outer Critics Circle Award. This production contains adult content.

Oklahoma Festival Ballet will enchant audiences with Tchaikovsky’s beloved fairy tale ballet, a holiday favorite!

The Nutcracker Choreographed by Willam Christensen Directed by Michael Bearden

8 p.m. Nov. 22, 24, Dec. 5, 6, 7 3 p.m. Nov. 24, Dec. 7, 8 Elsie C. Brackett Theatre

Once every four years, this magical ballet is brought to stage by the Oklahoma Festival Ballet. Tchaikovsky’s magical score tells the story of Clara, who receives a nutcracker doll during the family’s Christmas Eve celebration. She dreams of a Nutcracker Prince, his fierce battle against the Mouse King and their voyage to the Land of Sweets and the Kingdom of the Sugarplum Fairy. From near and far, characters come to entertain her. Soon the adventure fades away and Clara awakes in her living room wondering if it was all a dream. The School of Dance at OU is honored to present the first American full-length version of this timeless classic. The first performance was in 1944 by the San Francisco Ballet, choreographed by its artistic director and Balanchine student, Willam Christensen. Elegant, expansive and brimming with faultless mastery of technique, this ballet is a must-see production. Young dancers from Norman and the OKC metro area will comprise the children’s cast for this historic production.
