Faculty led programs abroad must be approved by the Dean of the college of record as well as the Dean of the College of International Studies. All OU students earning credit abroad are required to register with the Office of Education Abroad.

From the 2009 to the 2010 reporting cycle, the number of students participating in an approved, registered forcredit study abroad program increased by 18%. Data is organized in accordance with reporting conventions set by the Institute for International Education’s Annual Report entitled Open Doors. The reporting cycle for each year begins with the fall semester and ends with the summer term. Open Doors calculates undergraduate study abroad participation rates based on the total number of undergraduate study abroad students divided by the total number of undergraduate completions.


In 2009-2010, OU institution research reported that 3,677 Bachelor’s degrees were conferred. Using the 20092010 numbers of reported study abroad participation, 18% of OU undergraduates studied abroad last year. During the 2010-2011 Reporting Cycle, 811 OU students studied abroad on credit-bearing programs that registered through the Office of Education Abroad. Top destination countries include United Kingdom (21% of total), Italy (18% of total), France (14% of total) and Spain (13% of total). Other countries with significant numbers of student participants include China (65 participants), Costa Rica (29 participants), Germany (28 participants) and Peru (21 participants).

PROGRAM TYPES 2010 - 2011 While 811 OU students participated on an approved, credit-bearing study abroad experience tracked by the Office of Education Abroad, there were 19 students who participated in two programs during the 2010-2011 reporting cycle. Therefore, there are 830 total study abroad program participants for the information below on program types, terms and locations.
