DESIGNER NOTES

SCENIC DESIGN by Isaac Ramsey:

It is always a challenge designing a musical the second time. As a rule, I try not to recycle too many ideas from a previous design on a specific show, and I had designed Cabaret in 2017 in Georgia. Fortunately, I love to listen to director’s talk about the things that inspire them, and Lenny is excellent at providing all sorts of pathways to find inspiration. In this case it was his vision of how much space the club should inhabit and the color palettes of Dix, Grosz, and Beckman.

I wanted the club to enclose the action of the cavernous theatre–drawing the action further downstage. The trick was also letting it feel large and formerly grand. My idea was to use height as the opening device while keeping the amount of stage space relatively low. The team was drawn to the idea of mirrored spiral staircases as well as a visible band on stage. A set of brick walls and doors completes a downstage portal that allows for book scenes in Cliff’s flat and scenes with Shultz and Schneider. The upstage balcony allows for more dramatic movement as well as a perch for the Emcee to observe and interact throughout the production.

The real joy of designing a production like Cabaret is really how the episodic nature of the scenes lends to so many different interpretations. It was a joy working with such a collaborative team. The directors provided stellar vision to how actors would move through the world. Our lighting designer collaborated throughout the process as to the light bulbs used for the club scenes, and our technical director led the construction and engineering of a large set on a tight build schedule.

DESIGNER NOTES

COSTUME DESIGN by Thomas Martin:

I found the script for Cabaret difficult at first, since it’s pretty bare bones. There are a lot of things that I had to infer or even guess about characters, mostly based off of conversations with the director and choreographer. That being said, the director and choreographer came to our first meeting with a lot of research images and references, including the El Dorado documentary, and many paintings by Grosz, Dix, and Beckman.

The design for this show is very dark, dingy, and gritty, and it progressively darkens throughout the show in an almost menacing way. This mood really sets the reality of the situation these characters are in. In describing the hair and makeup for the ensemble, I used words such as “disgusting” and “gross.” When brighter colors are used, it’s for a very particular reason. The costumes for “Mein Herr” take a more militant look, with peaked caps and leather harnesses.

Movement was also a very big consideration for this production, and it’s fairly dance heavy. I designed costumes that would accentuate and enhance the movements of the dancers, such as the feathers in “Money.” Luckily, the tight and skimpy costumes make movement for our dancers very easy.

LIGHTING DESIGN by Jonathan Spencer:

Cabaret is one of my all time favorite musicals and I am very grateful for the opportunity to join the production here at Otterbein. For me it’s always about the characters and world of the play. This world is so rich and delicious and yet so deeply flawed. We are introduced to the world at its absolute brightest, the excitement of a new place seen through the eyes of a new person and all the freedom that comes from being a stranger. Then we move through the heady days where everything seems possible and each day is one adventure leading to the next. But ultimately the longer you stay in this world, the more cracks are revealed, and as one becomes more attached to its inhabitants the more heartbreaking it becomes.

The world of the Cabaret is flawed. But also filled with personal liberty, expressiveness, love, and art. This is set in stark contrast to the rising politics of the era, with its seductive messages of easy answers based upon overtly racist ideals. We watch the society in this play fall prey to these opportunists with a full understanding of the tragic outcome that awaits them, their victims, and the world. And the ultimate question posed in this play is, unfortunately, one which still haunts us as a society today - “What would you do?”

BIOGRAPHIES

Lenny Leibowitz (Director) is in his tenth year as a member of the Otterbein Theatre faculty. Since his arrival in Westerville, Lenny has directed Our Town, The Pirates of Penzance, Side by Side by Sondheim, The Pajama Game, An Enemy of the People, Guys & Dolls, Oklahoma!, My Fair Lady, Into the Woods, Baby, Clybourne Park, Brighton Beach Memoirs, Top Girls, Fiddler on the Roof, Radium Girls, Hay Fever, and Adding Machine: A Musical. As founding artistic director of Marvell Rep, Off-Broadway, Lenny directed 11 productions, including The Threepenny Opera, which received a Drama Desk nomination for Best Revival of a Musical. Other New York directing credits include the world premiere of Brian Yorkey’s Making Tracks, which ran Off-Broadway at Rockefeller Center’s Taipei Theater. Lenny has directed at some of the nation’s leading regional theatres including the Olney Theatre, the National Players, the Huntington Theatre’s Breaking Ground Festival, and the New Harmony Theatre, where he was artistic director for four years. A Philadelphia native, he made his professional debut as a piano soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra. He received his B.A. from Columbia University and his M.F.A. from Boston University. Member, SDC and AEA.

Dennis Davenport (Music Director, Pianist) is Professor of Music at Otterbein. He teaches in the BFA musical theatre program and in general education for the First Year Experience, Honors, and Senior Year Experience programs. Recent music direction includes I Do! I Do!, Baby and The Pirates of Penzance for Otterbein Summer Theatre. As always at Otterbein, even the orchestra is...beautiful!

Stella Hiatt Kane (Choreographer) is a professor in the Otterbein Department of Theatre and Dance and is the Associate Artistic Director and Director of Dance. She is also the founding Artistic Director of JazzMet. Ms. Kane has been a member of the national companies of Sugar and Bob Fosses’ Dancin’ and a member of the national and international companies of The American Dance Machine. She has made television appearances in productions such as PBS’ Dance in America and The Ann Reinking Special with Ann Reinking, Chita Rivera and Ben Vereen. Ms. Kane has taught for New York’s American Dance Machine/Harkness House and the Actors’ and Directors’ Lab. She has been a visiting guest artist/teacher at several universities including The Ohio State University and New York University and has been a master teacher in residence at the Northern Ballet Theatre in Leeds, England. She has also been a guest choreographer for BalletMet and Columbus Dance Theatre, including the world premiere of Women Leading Her most current Otterbein collaborations have included Baby, A Little Night Music, Something Rotten, The Pirates of Penzance, The Pajama Game and Chicago. Additionally, she recently directed the OST production of I Do, I Do and directed/choreographed the Otterbein University productions of Find Me in the Shadows, The Wild Within and Move Me.

Isaac Ramsey (Scenic Designer) is a theatrical artist, painter, and muralist. This is his second year as Associate Professor of Scenic Design at Otterbein. He is a graduate of Miami University and holds an MFA in Scenic Design from the University of Connecticut. Isaac is a regular presenter at the Southeastern Theatre Conference Convention and is a member of the United States Institute of Theatre technology where he has presented nationally and serves a juror in the Education Commission. His work has been presented across the east coast with companies such as the Connecticut Repertory Theatre, Cake Productions (NYC), and Actor’s Express (ATL). BIOGRAPHIES

Thomas Martin (Costume Designer) is a 2020 Otterbein grad. He grew up in Columbus, Ohio, but has called Avon, Colorado home for the last three years. He has spent the last two summers hiking long distance trails, including completing an Appalachian Trail thru hike last summer. In the winter, he works at a ski resort as a transportation supervisor. He has worked professionally at the Lyric Repertory Theatre, Ohio Light Opera, The Florida Repertory Theatre, and Weathervane Playhouse. At Otterbein, he has designed costumes for Chicago and An Enemy of The People, as well as assistant designing and draping on numerous productions. He hopes you enjoy this production!

Jonathan Spencer (Lighting Designer) is a Lighting and Scenic designer working principally for Broadway, Touring, Regional, and Off-Broadway productions. Having collaborated on over 130 productions and counting, lighting designs include the recent world premier Mr. Hollands Opus at Ogunquit Playhouse. And RENT 20th – 25th Anniversary National Tours which ran for over 1200 performances, The Priscilla Queen of the Desert First National Tour, Off-Broadway: Who’s Holiday (West Side Theatre), Carrie Mae Weems Grace Notes: Reflections for Now (John F Kennedy Center, Yale Repertory, and Spoleto Festival USA) and You Are Mine Own Directed by Atom Egoyan (Spoleto Festival USA). Jonathan teaches lighting and scenic design at the University of Colorado Boulder, and lighting design for the Southern Oregon University Masters of Theater Studies program. Kitty Mader (Sound Designer) is a sound designer and engineer from Avon, Ohio. She received her BFA in Design and Technology for theatre from Otterbein in 2022, and is currently the department’s Lighting and Sound Supervisor. Kitty has worked in renowned theatres such as Weston Theater in Weston, Vermont (Assistant Audio Supervisor), The Great Lakes Theater in Cleveland, Ohio (A2), and the Bard Summerscape Music and Opera Festival in upstate New York (Audio Assistant). She has sound designed many Otterbein productions, including Bright Star (2023), Dance 2022: Find Me in the Shadows, and Black Comedy (2022). Kitty is thrilled to be at Otterbein sound designing again, and she hopes you enjoy the show!

Libby Carroll, she/her, (Stage Manager) is a junior BFA Design/Technology major from Pittsburgh, PA! Her previous Otterbein credits include Black Comedy (Stage Manager), Bright Star (ASM), and The Heidi Chronicles (ASM). Her professional credits include OST’s Baby (Stage Manager), CCT’s The Happy Elf (Rehearsal Stage Manager), and Opera Project Columbus’s Don Pasquale (ASM). She would like to thank Lenny, Stella, and Dr. Davenport for always being a wonderful team to work with. She also like to thank her past and current professors (ESPECIALLY Hannah) for helping her get where she is today, she will be forever grateful. Hannah Hahn (Production Manager) is thrilled to return to her alma mater! Originally from central Ohio, she earned her B.F.A. in Theatre Design/Technology in 2018. Following graduation, Hannah interned with the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, FL before returning home to continue her work in the Columbus art scene. Hannah has worked professionally as a stage manager and event coordinator for several regional theatres including Mason Street Warehouse, Columbus Children’s Theatre, CATCO, Opera Project

Columbus, Opera Columbus, and Weathervane Playhouse. She also worked as Assistant Production Manager in 2019 for the inaugural CAPA Marquee Awards Program, which provides educational opportunities to the greater Columbus area high school theatre programs. In the years since, she has served as an adjudicator, teaching artist, and stage manager for Marquee Awards Showcase. Hannah currently lives in Columbus with her husband, Nick, and their two cats, Spooky & Pippin.

Dawn Horne (Director of Recruitment/Administrator) begins her third year managing Theatre and Dance recruitment programs. Her efforts are supported by an outstanding team of student leaders and volunteers that include the Student Volunteer Recruitment Coordinator and Apprentice, and the Otterbein Theatre and Dance Ambassadors.

Patrick Stone (Technical Director) began his tenure as the Technical Director at Otterbein in the fall of 2014. He holds an MFA from the University of South Dakota and a Bachelors of Arts from Doane College in Crete, Nebraska. He is an ETCP certified Theatrical Rigger. He teaches classes in stagecraft, properties, metal working, technical direction, wood working, and motion scenery. Patrick also enjoys consulting with theatres ranging from professional through junior high school. Patrick is launching an exciting new side project: he is currently Crowd Sourcing funds for an awesome video game. The game itself will be crowd sourced. As a reward for his funders, the first five Gold Level funders get to create the basic concept of the game! This is going to be great, don’t be left behind.

Jeanine Thompson (Theatrical Intimacy Director) is thrilled to be returning to Otterbein as the Theatrical Intimacy Director for Chicago. Her previous work was for the productions of I Do, I Do, Baby, Our Town and A Little Night Music. Jeanine is also an actor, director, creator of new work, and a Professor Emeritus of the Department of Theatre, Film and Media Arts at the Ohio State University. Other shows Jeanine has recently directed the intimacy for include, In The Next Room (or The Vibrator Play) by Sarah Ruhl, also directed by Jeanine; The Country Wife by William Wycherley; Red Velvet by Lolita Chakrabarti; Indecent by Paula Vogel; A Midsummer Night’s Dream; Her Naked Skin by Rebecca Lenkiewicz; Les Liaisons Dangereuses by Christopher Hampton; and Bonnets: How Ladies of Good Breeding are Induced to Murder by Jen Silverman, also directed by Jeanine.

Melinda Murphy (Voice and Movement Coach) teaches Alexander Technique and Feldenkrais Method® in the Otterbein Theatre and Dance Department, with application to movement, voice, characterization, singing, and dance. Melinda is one of the few teachers trained in both methods; she combines them in her private practice in Columbus, and in classes and seminars for performing artists at other Ohio colleges. Since coming to Otterbein, she also trained to teach Fitzmaurice Voice work for its specialized tools for improving the voice and breath. Melinda has coached Otterbein productions since the turn of the century. She has also coached equestrians, figure skaters, musicians, and competitive barbershop quartets and choruses, including the two-time international gold medalist Southern Gateway Chorus.

Mark Mineart (Fight Director, Associate Professor of Performance) has been a successful member of the professional theatre community for over 30 years, working as an actor, director, fight director, and coach. He has appeared on and off Broadway with such stars as Denzel Washington and Kelsey Grammar and has worked at many of the nation’s most

well respected and award-winning regional theatres. Classically trained, he has portrayed many of the great characters of world theatre, among them Cyrano de Bergerac, Macbeth, Long John Silver in Treasure Island, Lennie in Of Mice & Men, as well as George in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf here at Otterbein with friend and colleague Professor Melissa Lusher. He has created roles in almost a dozen world premiere productions by such playwrights as Jane Martin and Eric Cobble, and has had roles written for him by multiple Tony and Drama Desk Award-winner Arthur Kopit. In 2009 he relocated to Frankfurt, Germany and appeared in such films as What A Man and Iron Sky in addition to working as a performance capture artist for the blockbuster video games Crysis II, Bullet Storm, and NCIS: The Game. In May of 2022 Mark directed the European premiere of Peter Sinn Nachtrieb’s The Totalitarians for the English Theatre: Frankfurt, Europe’s preeminent English-speaking theatre. Most recently he directed the world premiere staged reading of Otterbein Professor Jeremy Llorence’s The Great Influencer, and coming up at Otterbein in 2024 Mark will be staging William Shakespeare’s classic comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Melissa Lusher (Dialects Coach) is a tenured Professor of acting, speech, and dialects in the Department of Theatre and Dance, where she also serves as the Director of the BFA Acting Program. She was deeply honored to receive Otterbein’s 2018 Teacher of the Year award. Melissa holds an M.F.A. in Acting from the combined program of Carnegie Mellon University and the Moscow Art Theatre, and a B.F.A. in Acting from Carnegie Mellon. She is a certified teacher of the Michael Chekhov acting technique through the Great Lakes Michael Chekhov Consortium. She has served as a dialect coach at many area universities and theatre companies, including CATCO, Short North Stage, and Actors’ Theatre. Her directorial debut production of Spring Awakening at Otterbein was named one of the Best 10 Productions of 2012 by The Columbus Dispatch. Her production of Chicago at Otterbein was awarded the same honor in 2019. Other Otterbein directing credits include A Little Night Music, A Lie of the Mind, “Master Harold”... and the Boys, Rumors, The Crucible, RENT, The Greeks: The Murders, and No Exit. Favorite acting credits include Martha in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (Otterbein), Barbara in August: Osage County (Otterbein), Goneril in King Lear (Actors’ Theatre), Clytemnestra in The Greeks (Moscow Art Theatre), Marina in Volodya (LaMaMa E.T.C.), Margaret in Richard III (AST), and the titular role in Miss Julie (CMU).

Anna Grywalski (Costume Shop Supervisor) is a costume designer, creator, and teacher. She would like to commend Kate Larson for her continued dedication to and enthusiasm for all things costume. Anna would also like to thank Howie and Alfie for their constant snuggling and support.

Tres Allison (Hans/Max/Loudspeaker Voice/Ernst Ludwig u/s) is a sophomore BFA Musical Theatre major from San Antonio, TX. Tres is beyond excited to be a part of one of his dream shows, Cabaret! Tres’ recent credits include Stanford in Bright Star (Otterbein), Howie Newsome in Our Town (Otterbein), and Emmett in Legally Blonde (NESA). Halle Audette (Lulu) is a sophomore BFA Musical Theatre major and Dance minor from Minneapolis, MN. Halle is so grateful to be back on the Cowan stage! Evan Blust (Ernst Ludwig) is a sophomore BFA Musical Theatre major with a minor in Dance from Trenton, OH. His previous Otterbein credits include Bright Star (Daddy Murphy) and Dance 2022: Find Me in the Shadows (Detective). Other notable credits include Footloose (Ren McCormack), Newsies (Crutchie), and The SpongeBob Musical (Squidward Q. Tentacles). Evan would like to thank Lenny, Melissa, and the entire cast and crew for the opportunity to be in such an iconic production, and to play such a haunting role.

Caroline Bowers (Fräulein Kost) is a junior BFA Musical Theatre major from Washington, D.C. Some of her past Otterbein credits include Lucy (Bright Star) and a Detective in Dance 2022: Find Me in the Shadows. She loves coloring books and her pet fish “PCD”. Sam Bryant (Victor Sept 28-30/Kit Kat Boy Swing Sept 21-24) is a sophomore BFA Musical Theatre major from Raleigh, NC. Sam is so thankful to be a part of this amazingly wild production! Sam was recently in last season’s Our Town, in 11th Hour’s: Red, and can be seen on the Otterbein Mainstage Improv Troupe. Sam can be seen around campus singing to random passersby, taking his pic of the day, and busting out his “special move!” He is so grateful to everyone who has supported him throughout the years!

Kinsey Gray Calderone (Texas) is a sophomore BFA Musical Theatre major and Dance minor from Lexington, NC. Kinsey is delighted to be a part of Cabaret! A ‘22 UNCSA (High School Drama) graduate, recent roles include Ensemble- Baby (OST), Rebecca Gibbs- Our Town (Otterbein), and Business Partners Shadow-Dance 2022: Find Me in the Shadows (Otterbein). Adrian Casto (Assistant Stage Manager) is a sophomore BFA Design/Technology major from West Liberty, OH. He is very excited for everyone to experience this show! Jane Cook (Assistant to the Choreographer/Kit Kat Girl Swing) is a BFA Creative Writing major and Dance minor from Canton, OH. Zsolt Dvornik (Banjo/Guitar) is thrilled to participate in an Otterbein production again, and in a few minutes he will start plucking his Banjo for your entertainment. You’ve got your fair warning now, though it is too late to do anything about it. Zsolt is an active musician, he played behind The Temptations, The Supremes, and Deana Martin on stage, and as a pit musician he played his guitars, mandolin, ukulele and banjo in dozens of musicals before. Some of his favorites were 42nd Street, All Shook Up, Altar Boyz, Catch Me If You Can, Chicago, Crazy For You, Footloose, Freaky Friday, Kinky Boots, Little Shop Of Horrors, Mamma Mia, Newsies, Pippin, School of Rock, Shrek, Sister Act, Sound of Music, Jersey Boys, Hello Dolly, Desperate Measures, and Joseph with an amazing long title. When not on stage or tucked away in a pit, Zsolt is teaching his guitar students at Z Guitar Studio (zguitarstudio.com). Willkommen im Kit Kat Klub, dann setz dich hin und genieße die Show!

LaBron Foy (Bobby) is a sophomore BFA Musical Theatre major from Loganville, GA. LaBron is thrilled to be sharing the pertinent story that is Cabaret. He is so grateful to be a part of this production and thanks God for every opportunity to grow and perform. Luca Fragiotta (Assistant Technical Director) is a senior BFA Design/Technology major with a minor in Film Studies from Lewis Center, OH. Luca worked as the Technical Director for the Weathervane Playhouse this summer and at the Gateway Playhouse in New York last summer. You may recognize him from his Lighting Designer role on Dance 2022: Find Me in the Shadows, and as the Technical Director and House Manager of Black Comedy. Luca is immensely grateful for his family, his roommates, Elizabeth, and Addy, as well as his supportive friends.

Simone Gelety (Fritzie/Dance Captain) is a sophomore BFA Musical Theatre Major and Dance minor from Tucson, AZ. Simone is overjoyed to be in Otterbein’s production of Cabaret. Working with such a fantastic cast and team of creatives has been a dream come true. Previous credits include Dance 2022: Find Me in the Shadows and Our Town – and they couldn’t be more grateful for these wonderful opportunities to learn and grow as an artist. Jackson Gifford (he/him) (Emcee Sept 28-30/Victor Sept 21-24) is a senior BFA Musical Theatre major and Dance minor from Oklahoma City, OK. Regional Credits: Annie (MUNY, STL.); The Sound of Music and Charlie Brown (Parallel 45, MI.); Cinderella and Sister Act (Summer Rep, CA.). Otterbein Credits: Black Comedy (Harold Gorringe), Our Town (Simon Stimson). Jackson is the founder and artistic director of Southern Plains Productions, an award winning site-specific theatre company in Oklahoma City. Additionally, he is the recipient of the 2022 NextGen Artist Award. Love & gratitude to my family & friends. <3

Macrae Harvey (Boy Soprano) is 11 years old and is in the sixth grade at St. Paul School in Westerville, Ohio. His favorite activities include playing soccer and lacrosse, singing in the school choir, and playing the clarinet in the school band. He especially loves video games and math and wants to be a computer programmer someday. Macrae made his solo singing debut in December 2022 with the Newark-Granville Symphony Orchestra.

Benjamin Hoover (Herr Schultz & Intimacy Captain) is a senior BFA Musical Theatre major from Franklin, PA. Ben is no stranger to the Otterbein Stage! Previous Credits include Nick Bottom (Something Rotten!), Michael (I do! I do!), and Major General (The Pirates of Penzance). In the spring he will be on internship in NYC. He would like to thank Lenny & Stella, Jeanine Thompson, His Family, and his fiancé, Grace, for everything. He will never forget his time at Otterbein and the community that supported him there.

Anna Hundt (Lead Carpenter) is a sophomore BFA Design and Technology Major from Milwaukee, WI. Her Otterbein credits include Carpenter for Bright Star, Assistant Stage Manager for Baby!, and Stage Manager for The Great Influencer She is thrilled to be a part of Cabaret, and she hopes you enjoy the show! Ben Huntoon (Trumpet) is in his 23rd season playing trumpet for Otterbein musical theatre productions. He recently retired after 30 years as the Jazz Education Consultant at Stanton’s Sheet Music in Columbus. He also served on the music faculty at Otterbein University for 15 years. Ben received degrees in music from Capital University (B.MusEd) and The Ohio State University (M.A.). As a performer and jazz educator he has appeared on numerous stages and with many artists over the past 40 years. You can hear Ben weekly on Monday evenings at the Clintonville Woman’s Club alongside 20 other world class musicians in Vaughn Wiester’s Famous Jazz Orchestra.

Tomasz Jarzecki (Percussion), originally from Poland, is a Columbus based drummer/ percussionist. A graduate of University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music, where he completed BM and MM in percussion performance. Tomasz is a self-proclaimed “jack-of-all-genres” and likes to perform in various musical settings. From a symphony stage to a country band stand, he’s done it. Tomasz can be seen performing regularly for Otterbein University’s theatre productions, OSU opera productions, Columbus Children Theatre, as well as smaller productions throughout the city. On a national level, he was a percussionist for two national tours of the 2001 Broadway revival of the musical Oklahoma! He has played drums for many local bands, including Juke Joint Saints, Christy Angeletti Band, Ray Massa’s Eurorhythms, In Full Swing Big Band, Clavesonic Latin Jazz Project, Big Rockin’ Blues Band, and others. As of 2023, Tomasz is in his 5th year teaching as an adjunct at Otterbein’s Music department where he has taught Percussion Methods class to BME freshmen students, percussion lessons to both majors and non-majors, and has directed the Otterbein University Percussion Ensemble.

Elise Karlstad (Helga) is a sophomore BFA Musical Theatre major from Stillwater, MN. Elise is excited and grateful to be a part of Otterbein’s production of Cabaret! You may have seen her in last year’s dance concert, Dance 2022: Find Me In The Shadows. She has been a competitive dancer and gymnast as well as a theatre artist her whole life! Last summer Elise won the award of Minnesota’s Triple Threat Competition. She is so thankful for this opportunity and hopes you ENJOY THE SHOW!!

Daniel Keener (Clifford Bradshaw) is a senior BFA Musical Theatre major from Wakeman, OH. His previous work at Otterbein includes Bright Star (Jimmy Ray), Falsettos (Jason), and Something Rotten (ensemble). He is incredibly grateful to be part of such a powerful and important piece of theatre. He would like to thank the cast and crew for a fun and conscientious process, and his family and friends for always supporting him.

Ian Kerber (House Manager) is a senior BA Theatre major and a Psychology minor from Elyria, OH. Previous show credits include Our Town (Assistant Stage Manager), Black Comedy (Wardrobe Lead), Something Rotten! (House Manager) and plenty of more. Ian would like to thank everyone for coming out, and that you enjoy the show! Andrew Kovaleski (Reed 2) is a piano technician and the instructor of saxophone at Otterbein University in Westerville, OH. He is the sole proprietor of Andrew Kovaleski Piano Tuning, LLC which services over 500 pianos annually in the greater Columbus area, including for Otterbein University, Ohio Dominican University, Worthington City Schools, BalletMet, the Westerville Symphony, and many more. Andrew plays alto saxophone in the Black Swamp Saxophone Quartet and has performed in concerto with the Youngstown State University Wind Ensemble, OtterCap Symphony Orchestra, and the Otterbein University Wind Ensemble. He is a Registered Piano Technician with the Piano Technician’s Guild and is the Vice President of its Columbus chapter. Andrew holds a Master of Music in Saxophone Performance from Youngstown State University and a Bachelor of the Arts in Music History from Otterbein University.

Kate Larson (Wardrobe Lead) is a senior BFA Design/Technology major from Cambridge, MN. Kate is really excited to finish up her last semester at Otterbein with some really great productions. She would like to thank Olivia Rossi and Lily Cowie for being such wonderful friends.

Ryan Lewis (Lighting Programmer) is a junior BA Theatre major and Art History & Visual Culture minor from Long Island, NY. Ryan is ecstatic to be involved in this production of Cabaret as the lighting programmer. It is one of his favorite shows after seeing the recent West End production last summer. Ryan’s previous credits include Assistant Lead electrician for Dance 2022: Find Me in The Shadows and he was most recently hired as a staff electrician at The Argyle Theater for its installation of Grease. Alex Munzke (Charge Artist) is a senior BFA Design/Tech major from Shakopee MN. She has worked previously on The Pajama Game, Something Rotten, and Bright Star in a stage management capacity with this being her first big role outside that focus. Julia Murphy (Fräulein Schneider/Dialect Captain) is a senior BFA Musical Theatre major from Indianapolis, IN. Julia is so excited to welcome you to the Kit Kat Club! Her recent credits include: Lizzie (Baby), Ensemble/Dialect Captain (Bright Star), Madame Armfeldt (A Little Night Music) and more. Julia enjoys long nature walks to the song “The Climb” and baking Diva Cookies. Natalie Neville (Co-Props Lead) is a sophomore BFA Design/Technology major and is excited to be a part of Cabaret this fall! She has an educational focus on scenery and props, as well as a love for painting, and currently works in the Otterbein scene shop as a carpenter. Natalie would like to shout out Olivia Rossi and Patrick Stone for helping her through her first big props project. She hopes you enjoy the show!

Jessica Noal (Frenchie) is a BFA Acting major with a Dance minor from Lafayette, CA. Jessica has loved working on this fun, crazy, and impactful show. Her previous Otterbein credits include Black Comedy (Clea), and Bright Star (Spirit/Ensemble). She would like to thank her family, friends, and faculty members for supporting her throughout her four years at Otterbein!

Tom Regouski (Reed 1) is a multiple-woodwind specialist with a Master’s Degree in performance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Tom has originated woodwind parts for musicals including the New York Times critic’s pick Then She Fell, Andrew Lippa’s Unbreakable, and Songs of the Phoenix a song-cycle included songs by Stephen Schwartz, Ingrid Michaelson, and Stephen Sondheim. He has performed with The Color Purple National Tour, The Weston Theater Company and alongside artists such as Kristin Chenoweth, Alice Ripley, and Kate Baldwin. Recently, Tom made his Carnegie Hall debut as a Klezmer clarinet soloist for We Are Here a night of Jewish songs that survived the holocaust.

Josie Rocca (Assistant Lead Electrician) is a senior BFA Design/Technology major from Lewis Center, OH. Otterbein credits include Dance 2022: Find me in the Shadows (Lead Electrician), Something Rotten (ALE), and The Heidi Chronicles (ALE/A1). Josie has also worked with Columbus’ The Davidson, The Lincoln, Ballet Met, Opera Project Columbus, and The Wexner Center for the Arts; and recently returned from her summer internship at The Santa Fe Opera. Josie would like to thank Gabe and Kitty for being the best team she could hope to work with and amazing friends.

Nora Root (Assistant Stage Manager) is a sophomore BA Theatre major and Art minor from Hilliard, OH. Nora has been doing theater from a young age and has particular interests in costumes and direction. She loves art and all the different mediums we can showcase with theater here at Otterbein. Ben Sanford (Emcee Sept 21-24/Kit Kat Boy Swing Sept 28-30) is a junior BFA Acting major from Minneapolis. MN. Ben is honored to be returning to the Cowan stage in his third mainstage production. Other Otterbein credits include The Heidi Chronicles (Chris/Mark/ Steve/Ray), Bright Star (Daddy Cane), and his professional debut in OST’s production of Baby (Danny Hooper). Roberto Silva-Neto (Herman/Sailor/Gorilla) is a junior BFA Musical Theatre major from West Lebanon, NH. Roberto is so excited to be back in Cowan Hall especially with such a strong cast. Claire Stancy (Rosie) is a junior BFA Acting major and Dance minor from Chesapeake, VA. Her previous Otterbein credits include Our Town (Emily), Baby (Pam), A Little Night Music (Fredrika), and Dance 2022: Find Me in the Shadows (Lost Love Shadow). She would like to thank her friends and family for their love and support, Jack for pre-rehearsal coffee, and Ben Sanford for endless inspiration.

Joyce Stonebraker (Synthesizer) was the choir director and department head at Westerville North High School for 30 years. After retirement from WNHS, she worked in the choral dept at Stanton’s Sheet Music in Columbus and as a staff accompanist here at Otterbein for 12 years. Now Joyce is a freelance accompanist, playing for musicals, choir concerts, Solo and Ensemble contests, and local churches in the Central Ohio area.

Eric Stratton (Bass) is a bass player from Westerville, OH. He graduated from Otterbein University in 2019 with a Bachelor of Music in Bass Performance and a Bachelor of Arts in Music. Eric is an active performer in central Ohio, and plays in a variety of musical settings, from theatre and symphonic work to rock and metal music. His musical theatre credits range from community and professional companies such as Short North Stage and Columbus Children›s Theatre. Eric has played several Otterbein University Theatre & Dance productions over the years, including Chicago, A Gentleman›s Guide to Love and Murder, Something Rotten, and Bright Star.

Tony Weikel (Trombone), originally from Buffalo, NY, attended SUNY College at Fredonia where he received a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education and also obtained a Performer’s Certificate. He then attended Duquesne University where he earned his Master of Music degree in trombone performance. After graduation, he spent time freelancing

in the greater Pittsburgh area. He then attended Indiana University where he began a Doctorate of Music degree in trombone. After his time at IU he spent time freelancing in the greater Bloomington/Indianapolis area. He then attended Ohio State University and finished the Doctorate of Musical Arts degree in trombone. While in Columbus, Tony has thrived as educator. He is currently the adjunct trombone instructor at Capital University, and adjunct low brass instructor at Otterbein University and Ohio Wesleyan University. He also has a large private studio comprised of students from school districts throughout the greater Columbus area. He has also given master classes and lectures at schools and universities throughout the Midwest and beyond. Tony is currently second trombone with the Springfield (OH) Symphony and principal trombone with the Westerville Symphony. He has had the privilege of playing with many orchestras during his career, including the Western New York Chamber Orchestra, Pittsburgh Chamber Orchestra, Pittsburgh Opera, Columbus Indiana Philharmonic, Louisville Orchestra, Terre Haute Symphony, Carmel Symphony, Canton Symphony, Columbus Symphony, Ashland Symphony, Richmond (IN) Symphony, and ProMusica. He has also had a very rewarding freelance career in four different cites, playing a vast array of gigs including opera, church services, Broadway shows, and everything in between. Tony has also had success in a variety of chamber ensembles, and is currently a member of Columbus BrassWorks Brass Quintet and the Ohio Trombone Quartet. As a member of the Ohio Trombone Quartet, he has had the opportunity to perform at the International Trombone Festival, play a featured recital at the Ohio Music Education Association Conference, and consistently tour, playing recitals and educational concerts, and giving master classes. Tony has been extremely fortunate to study with many fine trombonists, including Barry Kilpatrick, Carl Mazzio, Scott Parkinson, Pete Sullivan, Peter Ellefson, and Joe Duchi. Gabe Whitnack (Lead Electrician) is a senior BFA Design/Technology major and Film Studies minor from Durham, NC. Some of his previous Otterbein credits include Assistant Lead Electrician for Bright Star, House Manager for Our Town and Lead Electrician for Black Comedy. This is Gabe’s last show as a Lead Electrician at Otterbein, so he’d like to thank all of the wonderful faculty, staff, mentors, friends and family that helped make these past four years so amazing. Shelby Zimmerman (Sally) is a senior BFA Musical Theatre major from Tampa, FL and is unbelievably grateful to be portraying such an iconic, dream role. Her previous Otterbein credits include A Little Night Music (Petra), A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder (Miss Barley), and a tap-dancing egg in Something Rotten! ABOUT THE WRITERS

Joe Masteroff (1919-2018) Born in Philadelphia, Joe Masteroff had only one dream from infancy: to write for the theatre. After the essential lonely childhood and four-year stint in the Air Force, he came to New York to face his future: book writer or book seller? Luckily, luck intervened. Before long he had three shows on Broadway bearing his name: The Warm Peninsula starring Julie Harris, and two musicals, She Loves Me and Cabaret, for which he was the book writer. His other work included the libretto for 70, Girls, 70 and Desire Under The Elms and book and lyrics for Six Wives and Paramour. Thanks to indulgent parents, the New Dramatists, Hal Prince and many others, Joe Masteroff retired and lived in subdued luxury until his death in 2018.

John William Van Druten (1901-1957) was an English playwright and theatre director. He began his career in London, and later moved to America, becoming a U.S. citizen. He was known for his plays of witty and urbane observations of contemporary life and society.

Christopher Isherwood (1904-1986) was a novelist, playwright, screen-writer, autobiographer, and diarist. He was homosexual and made this a theme of some of his writing. He was born near Manchester in the north of England in 1904, became a U.S. citizen in 1946, and died at home in Santa Monica, California in January 1986.

John Harold Kander (1927- ) began his formal musical training began at Oberlin College. While still a student, he composed his first theatre scores for Second Square and “Opus Two” in 1950 and Requiem for Georgie in 1951. He went on to attend Columbia University, before making his Broadway debut in 1962 with a score for the musical A Family Affair. On November 20, 1966 Cabaret opened at the Broadhurst Theatre and ran for 1,166 performances. In 1968 he and Ebb wrote the music for The Happy Time, produced at the Broadway Theatre, and for Zorba, produced at the Imperial Theatre. In 1971 the team wrote music for 70, Girls, 70 at the Broadhurst Theatre. Their next big Broadway success came in 1975 with the help of Bob Fosse and Chicago. Kander and Ebb continued their collaboration with The Act in 1978. They received their second Tony Award in 1981 for Woman of the Year. In 1984 the duo worked on The Rink for the Martin Beck Theatre, which starred Liza Minnelli and Chita Rivera. Success returned to Kander and Ebb with Kiss of the Spider Woman. Kander’s career has not been limited to theater. He has written scores for several films. These include: Something for Everyone (1969), A Matter of Time (1976), Kramer vs. Kramer (1979), Still of the Night (1982), Blue Skies Again (1983), Places in the Heart (1984), I Want to Go Home (1989), and Billy Bathgate (1991). He also collaborated with Ebb for one of their most famous accomplishments, “New York, New York” (1977). The duo also wrote music for Cabaret (1972), Funny Lady and Lucky Lady (1975), and French Postcards (1979). Kander and Ebb also collaborated on music for several television specials.

Fred Ebb (1928-2004) won Tony, Emmy, Grammy, and Kennedy Center Honors Lifetime Achievement Awards for his work as a writer, director, and composer. His collaborations with John Kander, Bob Fosse, Judy Garland, Barbra Streisand, and Liza Minnelli made him a legend in the New York theatre community. Mr. Kander and Mr.Ebb wrote and made famous the city’s unofficial theme song “New York, New York.” Their longtime partnership and distinct style created such classic musicals as Woman of the Year, Kiss of the Spider Woman, Steel Pier, The Act, Cabaret, and the award-winning Chicago, which has become the longest-running American musical in history.
