Opera Theater Transformed It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to SummerFest 2014. Just three years ago, Opera Theater transformed itself from a fall-throughspring company into a summer festival enjoyed by thousands of Western Pennsylvanians, presenting 24 ticketed events over three weeks in the beautiful and intimate surroundings of the Twentieth Century Club. And yet it almost didn't happen. The recent global recession negatively affected Opera Theater as well as every other arts organization, forcing us to contract our operations in order to survive. But by carefully controlling expenses, pursuing new avenues of corporate and foundation support, and launching the SummerFest model, we have not only survived, but thrived. Through the ongoing work of the administrative staff, guided by an active and engaged Board of Directors, we are happy to report:

• • • •

An 86% growth in the general operating budget from 2011 to 2014. A 12% increase in contributed revenue from 2011 to 2014. A 139% increase in ticket revenue 2011 to 2013. A doubling in attendance since 2011.

These statistics, however, only tell one part of the story. We continue to present innovative productions that delight audiences and critics, nurture the best young singers in the country, employ hundreds of local singers, instrumentalists, and theater technicians, and introduce thousands of children to the dramatic power of music drama. But the story is only complete with you — our donors, ticket buyers, volunteers, host families, and friends. Your support has made the past 36 years possible, and we look forward to having you join us this season and for 36 more!

The Story and Settings ACT I The embassy in Paris of the poverty-stricken Pontevedro is holding a party to celebrate the birthday of the sovereign, the Crown Prince. Baron Mirko Zeta is delighted to see his wife Valencienne acting the perfect hostess to Camille de Rosillon. Rosillon in reality is "courting" Valencienne even though she assures him that she is "a respectable wife." Widow Hanna Glawari, whose husband left her a considerable fortune, arrives. Pontevedro is on the verge of bankruptcy, but Zeta hopes that Hanna will come to the country's financial rescue if she is persuaded to marry Danilo, her former lover and one of Pontevedro's most dashing citizens. Zeta tries to convince Danilo to court Hanna "for the Fatherland," but he stubbornly refuses. When a “Ladies' Choice" is announced, Hanna is besieged. Danilo spitefully invites in a bevy of women to distract the men. Although Valencienne urges Hanna to choose Camille as her partner, in a moment of pique, Hanna chooses the only man who ignores her—Danilo. He declines but states that he will give his dance with her to anyone offering a ten thousand franc donation to charity. The other men immediately lose interest, leaving Hanna and Danilo alone to their dance. Intermission ACT II Hanna invites all the Embassy guests to a Pontevedrian-themed garden party at her villa. The entertainment includes the song "Vilya," a traditional legend of a young girl and a huntsman's unrequited love. Baron Zeta hopes that Hanna will marry Camille, but he learns that Camille is in love with a married woman. The gentlemen at the party exchange suggestions on how to handle women, while Camille continues his pursuit of Valencienne. Valencienne gives Camille her fan, on which is written, "I am a respectable wife ." Still he persuades her to join him in the pavilion. Zeta finds the fan, becomes anxious to discover who Camille's "married woman" is and heads for their rendezvous. To save Valencienne from scandal, Hanna slips into the pavilion through a back door. When she is discovered apparently inflagrante with Camille, Hanna explains her “tryst” by announcing that she is engaged to Camille. Hanna provokes Danilo by vowing to live "in the Parisian style ." Danilo angrily relates a parable about a prince who said nothing of his love for a princess who had given her hand to another. When he storms off in anger, Hanna is convinced that he loves her . ACT III Hanna, knowing that all foreigners consider Maxim's the epitome of life "in the Parisian style," decks out her villa to resemble the famous restaurant, Danilo's favorite retreat. Danilo implores Hanna not to marry Camille. She says she never had any such intentions and assures him that she was not in the pavilion with Camille. The baron is shocked to find Valencienne's fan in the summerhouse, but she—“in the best Parisian style”—points out that she had written on it, "I am a respectable wife ." In closing, everyone points out that this operetta is a lesson on the difficulty in understanding women, as well as men, and Danilo ends up with Hanna-happily ever after?!

Director's Note It is sometimes easy to forget that European operetta was largely a reaction against the more serious operatic traditions. Works like The Merry Widow and Die Fledermaus that survive the ordeal of time stem from a direct response to certain social crises at the time. Thus, despite its bubbly glamour, The Merry Widow is a piece that has a thorn in its heart. Instead of following the frolicking tradition, I am more interested in unveiling the vulnerable side of the piece. The story, at heart, is bittersweet. The seemingly happy ending is a compromise. Hanna and Danilo reunite because they once loved and lost each other; but they know that things may fall apart again. Valencienne chooses to leave her paramour and go back to the role of ‘a respectable wife’ because she doesn't want to lose the title and fame that she cherishes so. Through the experience of losing, we realize what we really want, carrying on and accepting each other’s baggage. And that is what makes the operetta so human. Social conventions may have changed, but bourgeois society’s hypocrisy and double standards have not. We still find it difficult to express how we feel sincerely. In my view, ‘joie de vivre’ is not about thoughtless freedom. Instead, it is through recognizing the ephemerality and impermanence of life that you cherish the present moment. I hope you will enjoy seeing The Merry Widow from a more genuine side of the story, and cherish each precious encounter in our stage characters' lives. After all, it is always good to be in love, however brief that might be. –Mo Zhou

Julius Rudel Remembered Opera Theater dedicates our production of Ariadne on Naxos to the memory of Julius Rudel (1921-2014), one of America's preeminent opera conductors. Maestro Rudel, who passed away on June 26, had a close connection to our Artistic Director, Jonathan Eaton, with whom he presided over seven productions, including notable American premieres of works by Kurt Weill and Walther Braunfels at the Spoleto Festival USA. For Opera Theater, Maestro Rudel conducted four productions: the English language premiere of Weill's great opera Die Buergschaft/The Bond, the first revival for many decades of Weill's Lost in the Stars both in Pittsburgh and on tour to the Virginia Arts Festival, Weill's Der Jasager/The Boy who said Yes with Mimi Lerner in the lead role in Pittsburgh and at the New York Japan Society, and Britten's Curlew River, also in both cities. His musical leadership was exemplary, and his insight into Weill's music was inspiring. He will be sorely missed.

Choose Your Partners for the Waltz December 1905! What a month for waltzes! On the thirtieth of that month in Vienna at the Theater an der Wien, Hanna, the merry widow, waltzed herself into the hearts of the western world, while 300 miles away at the Hofoper in Dresden Richard Strauss's Salome waltzed off her seven veils in exchange for the head of John the Baptist, a dance which set tongues wagging for decades to come. The Merry Widow boasts of a more notable ancestry than most operettas. It is based on a play L'Attaché by Henri Meilhac, librettist for Bizet’s Carmen as well as a number of pieces by Offenbach. L'Attaché was seized upon by two prominent Viennese librettists, Leo Stein and Victor Léon, who saw it as the ideal material for an operetta but who turned to Lehár only as a second choice to compose the music. The Merry Widow did not receive great critical support. One of Vienna's most influential critics stated that it was one of the most distasteful pieces he had ever seen. However, as in the case of The Fantasticks, word of mouth carried the day leading to 600 performances and a burgeoning "Merry Widow craze" which spread across the continent and to America. Merry Widow hats became the rage. Soaps, perfumes, cosmetics were sold under The Merry Widow banner, while the operetta itself became the ultimate symbol of the belle Epoque. Its popularity reached imperial circles where the grand duchess Olga, sister of Tsar Nicholas II (both ill-fated) gracefully danced the Merry Widow Waltz with her hands behind her head. On a less exalted level the public enjoyed a plethora of adaptations, recordings dating as

far back as 1907, film versions, a ballet and—the ultimate token of popularity— many parodies. Still, parody can take a solemn turn. In June 1941 the Nazis invaded Russia, determined to overwhelm Leningrad. Between June and December of that year Shostakovich completed his seventh symphony, popularly known as the “Leningrad.” Not without contempt for the Nazis' initiative, the composer incorporated into the first movement of his symphony a distorted and satanical rendition of I'm going to Maxim’s, Danilo's taunting leave-taking of Hanna which concludes the second act of The Merry Widow. It is an unambiguous challenge to the Germans. The conquest of Russia would in no way resemble the instant capitulation of France. Lehár had an ambiguous relationship with the Nazis, honored because of the popularity of his music. In 1941, a number of Lehár concerts were mounted in Paris by the Nazis. Surely Shostakovich had heard of them. SummerFest’s Merry Widow differs to the score heard at the work’s 1905 premiere in that the overture, which introduces the audience to the more familiar melodies of the operetta, was not composed by Lehár until 1940, at which time it was given its first performance by the Vienna Philharmonic in celebration of his seventieth birthday. Finally, we should note the passing of the 20th century's most celebrated Merry Widow, Marta Eggerth, who died on December 26, 2013 at her home in Rye, New York. She was often referred to as "the Callas of operetta." She was 101. Program notes by Jerry Clack, Professor of Classics and Opera Theater Board Member

The Story Act 1 As the overture ends, the stage fills with actors preparing for the evening's presentation. The Narrator emerges singing the production's most memorable number Try to Remember, an invitation to the audience to follow him into the spirit of the spectacle all are about to witness. As the music fades, the narrator introduces the characters in the play: the boy Matt, the girl Luisa, two fathers and a wall. Luisa is lost in fantasies which include Matt saving her from kidnappers (Much More). Soon Matt joins her in an ardent duet (Metaphor) complaining of the wall which separates them. Their fathers appear unexpectedly, admonishing them and sending them off about their chores. However, when left alone, the fathers chuckle, embrace and boast about their grasp of child psychology (Never Say No). They have craftily simulated their dislike for one another, knowing that children always defy their parents. Their disapproval is a guarantee that the two children will fall in love. They decide it is now time to abandon their hostile posture by hiring El Gallo (the Narrator in disguise as a bandit) to abduct Luisa. As for cost of this deception, El Gallo sets the price (It Depends On What You Pay). The lovers agree to meet that evening in spite of the fact that a storm is threatening (Soon It's Gonna Rain), foreshadowing as it were the events to come. For better or worse their tryst is interrupted by an abduction ballet. El Gallo (who employs an aging Shakespearean actor) and his assistant stage an elaborate abduction, complete with sword fights and Indians. Matt is victorious and rescues Luisa (Happy Ending). Intermission Act 2 The romance begins to fade (This Plum Is Too Ripe). The fathers quarrel. Luisa and Matt separate. Matt sets out to see the world. The Narrator comments on his departure (I Can See It). The wall is rebuilt, but as time passes the fathers become friends again, speak sadly of their children and return to their gardens (Plant A Radish). The Narrator once again disguises himself as El Gallo and, so disguised, makes love to Luisa. He promises to introduce her to the pleasures of the world (Round and Round), but then abandons her, giving her a taste of the bitterness of life. Matt returns disheveled and victimized after a series of disastrous experiences. Both the youngsters have suffered disillusionment with the world, but they have both matured. The Narrator explains that they have been reunited in a true and unaffected way (They Were You). He states that now autumn is over and winter has come bringing snow and wisdom. Deep in December, it's nice to remember. Without a hurt the heart is hollow. Deep in December, our hearts should remember. And follow.

assured the show's continuing popularity. Moreover, he encouraged school groups to perform The Fantasticks while the New York production was still in full swing. In a move unheard of at the time, he allowed The Fantasticks to be broadcast as a “Hallmark Hall of Fame” presentation in 1964. The Story and Settings The Prologue In the home of the wealthiest man in Vienna, feverish preparations are underway for the presentation of a new opera, Ariadne auf Naxos. In the midst of the confusion, the composer's music teacher learns that a comic ballet entitled Zerbinetta and Her Lovers is also on the bill that evening. To confound matters even more, the major-domo stuns the entire ensemble by announcing that the master of the house—to allow for a fireworks display at nine on the dot—has ordered that the ballet and the opera be combined and performed simultaneously on the same stage. As Zerbinetta is adept at improvisation, she should have no difficulty in managing such an arrangement. The reluctant composer accedes to the proposal, convinced that his music will win the day, captivated more by Zerbinetta's flirtatious ways than by common sense. Intermission The Opera The curtain rises to reveal Ariadne marooned on the island of Naxos, abandoned by her lover Theseus, whose life she has saved and with whom she has fled after his escape from the Minotaur in the labyrinth on the island of Crete. Nature itself, in the form of three nymphs, shows sympathy for her predicament, but they do not console her. Ariadne yearns only for death as she waits for Hermes, messenger of death, who will lead her to the underworld. As Ariadne wallows in despair, Zerbinetta bursts onto the scene and sneaks in an aria (considered by many as the most difficult aria in the soprano repertory) to calm Ariadne’s laments and to persuade her to look instead for another lover—all to no avail, despite the fact that Zerbinetta and her dance partners illustrate as best they can the pleasures of romantic pursuit. Suddenly the nymphs herald the approach of the god Bacchus who has just escaped from the embraces of the sorceress Circe. Ariadne believes Bacchus to be Death coming to claim her. She approaches him with timidity, but the sight of him awakens her to new life through the miracle of love. She agrees to accompany him to Olympus, rather than to death as she had at first imagined, where she will later be transformed—as enthusiasts of astronomy know—into the constellation Corona Borealis. As they embrace, Zerbinetta saunters across the stage commenting on the fickleness of women while Bacchus and Ariadne, oblivious to everything else, sing of love as the greatest glory of life.

Director's Note We hope you enjoy a transformative experience with Ariadne! If you do, you will be following the journey of its characters, and I believe, the inspiration of its authors. For the opera is about transformations. Of words and music into art. Of comedy and tragedy into beauty. Of a classical legend into a universal love story. The story is about people, but it is also about art—in this case, how the separate arts of music, words, drama, dance and images can merge into a sublimely beautiful art form, opera; and how this alchemy can transform us and sweep us up with Ariadne to the heavens. But hold on a minute—let’s not take ourselves too seriously. We must end by 9:00 pm for the fireworks. Let comedy and tragedy be played simultaneously to save time. The entertainment schedule may call the shots–but somehow that works out even better, and love, truth and beauty rise above it all, and, in a final transfiguration–prevail? Our production suggests several different time periods: we mount a contemporary view of an early 20th century piece that was originally set by its authors in an 18th century world, whose characters watch medieval commedia dell'arte clowns bursting in on a Classical story. The time levels start out somewhat defined and separate; by the end of the opera, the transformations wrought by the music and drama draw us all into the same universal time-space: that of love, and art, transfigured into cosmic light... Ariadne celebrates the transformative power of love and of the art of opera. And we, in the audience, are also raised up and transformed, like Ariadne. -Jonathan Eaton

The Duality of Art and Love Ariadne auf Naxos, with a libretto by Hugo von Hofmannsthal and music by Richard Strauss, is the fourth in a series of operas produced in the earlier days of the 20th century by one of Europe's greatest creative teams. It is a stunning collaboration, containing a rich complexity of words, music, dance and mime.

It becomes clear that Zerbinetta is the human life force and that the vision of Ariadne's and Bacchus' joy (remember that they are nameless actors) is only a musical representation of the way humans feel whenever they fall in love. The idea behind Ariadne is a fine one. However, it is wrapped in a cellophane cover of rococo conceits obscuring the opera's meaning for the unsuspecting

opera-goer. Luckily, the opera is clothed in ravishing music which should convince the listener of the validity of Hofmannsthal's contention even if the play does not. Later, Hofmannsthal attempted to clarify his intentions by stating that with love as with other things, “Transformation is the life of life itself, the real mystery of nature as a creative force. Permanence is numbness and death. Whoever wants to live must surpass himself, must transform himself.“ Program notes by Jerry Clack, Professor of Classics and Opera Theater Board

The Story and Scenes Composer Lukas Foss and librettist Jean Karsavina elected to create an opera in two scenes based on the short story The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County by Mark Twain (1835 -1910). The frog, Daniel Webster, is defeated in a jumping contest because the gambling stranger has filled the amphibian with buckshot. When the deceit is discovered, the stranger is cast out and the town again hails Daniel’s prowess. Setting: Angel’s Camp, Calaveras County, California SCENE 1 – Outside Uncle Henry’s Place Outside Uncle Henry's Place, Smiley brags about what a great jumper his frog, Daniel Webster, is. Uncle Henry and Lulu, his niece, are singing the praises of the frog and its teacher, Smiley. A stranger enters and says he doesn't think Smiley's frog is any different than any other. To prove it, he bets 40 dollars that another frog will outjump Daniel Webster. Left alone with the champion frog, the stranger feeds it some buckshot from Uncle Henry's shotgun. He also reveals that he travels from town to town cheating the men and loving the women. The stranger leaves for Lulu's place; she has promised to cook him dinner. SCENE 2 – In the Town Square Later, all the townsfolk are amazed at the stranger's foolhardiness in betting against Daniel Webster. The stranger enters with Lulu and tells her goodbye, then offers to match wagers with anyone else in town. The locals are stunned when Daniel is unable to make even a small jump. The stranger checks his winnings and leaves while the spectators lament. Suddenly, Daniel begins to vomit buckshot. The stranger is dragged back, relieved of his winnings, and chased out of town as all join in praising Daniel Webster—still the champion jumper of Calaveras County!

The Story and Scenes A NEW KIND OF FALLOUT (working title) An Eco Opera, story by Tammy Ryan (librettist) and Gilda Lyons (composer) Inspired by the works and life of Rachel Carson, A New Kind of Fallout is the fictional story of Alice Front, a newly pregnant 1960s homemaker whose life and marriage are transformed after reading Carson’s seminal book, Silent Spring. Setting: A fictional suburb of Pittsburgh Time: 1962 A contented wife and expectant mother Alice Front evolves into a concerned citizen and enlightened environmental activist when her municipality sprays her neighborhood with a “miracle compound” to eradicate insect pests. Her husband, Jack, an advertising executive and “company man” on the rise at the chemical company that manufactures the pesticide, is at odds with her as his responsibilities to the company clash with Alice’s newly-formed concerns for the safety of their environment, home and unborn child. Alice’s narrative manifests Carson’s universal lesson: that everything in this world is interconnected, not only in terms of “the balance of nature,” but in the balance of a society—childhood friendships, communities, businesses, political alliances, partnerships and the private negotiations of marriage. A New Kind of Fallout explores a pivotal cultural shift in American awareness about humanity’s impact upon its environment by dramatizing a critical moment of change in one woman’s life. The working title is taken from Rachel Carson’s testimony to the U.S. Senate in 1963.

Jonathan Eaton has served as Artistic & General Director of Opera Theater of Pittsburgh since 1999, and has led the company in presenting varied and unusual repertoire as well as reimagined classics. Notable productions have included Weill’s Lost in the Stars conducted by Julius Rudel, a historic revival of Duke Ellington’s Beggar’s Holiday, and most recently Shining Brow performed on the terraces at Fallingwater. Other highlights for OTP include Wagner’s complete Ring Cycle in Jonathan Dove’s reduced orchestration and Weill’s Die Bürgschaft/The Bond, which was chosen to open the Kurt Weill Festival in Dessau Germany in 2003. Jonathan also has directed widely in opera houses throughout North America and Europe. His work has been seen at New York City Opera with Turandot, Carmen, and Cavalleria Rusticana and I Pagliacci, which were televised for nationwide broadcast on “Great Performances Live from Lincoln Center.” He also has directed for the Chicago Lyric, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Dallas, San Diego, Kentucky, Indianapolis and Memphis opera companies, and the Santa Fe and Spoleto festivals. In Canada he has directed for the Canadian Opera and Vancouver Opera; in Britain, he has directed at the Royal Opera Covent Garden, English National Opera, Welsh National Opera and Opera North; in Germany, he has directed for the Hannover, Würzburg and Bielefeld operas and the Bochumer Symphoniker. He also has directed at the Netherlands Opera and the operas of Nantes, Lyons and Nancy. In addition to his work for Opera Theater, Jonathan served as Artistic Director of !SING - DAY OF SONG for Ruhr 2010 Cultural Capital of Europe. He led a series of projects related to singing which involved more than a million people singing in 53 cities, culminating in a staged mega-concert with 58,000 singers in the Schalke football stadium. This project was televised by WDR and web streamed across the world.
