From the Superintendent... Jeffery S. Haase Taking Time to Celebrate the Successes

• As the Class of 2022 completes their education with Otsego Public Schools, I would like to thank our entire staff. The staff of OPS routinely go above and beyond, but like never before during the last two years. This graduating class is a great group of students who are well equipped for their post-secondary education, career-ready opportunities or the military. On behalf of the Otsego Public Schools Board of Education, I would like to wish these graduates much success in their future. As we begin our summer break, I would like to identify and celebrate some of the many accomplishments from the past year: • We never closed school or moved to remote learning. • 29 seniors graduated with distinction (GPA greater than 4.0). • Otsego Public Schools graduated 12 students with an Associates Degree, at no cost to them or their family, through the Early College of Allegan County. Additionally, 17 students were accepted into the program. • Otsego Virtual Academy launched

and maintained an enrollment of 70 students. The anticipated enrollment was 30-50 students. Alamo, Dix Street, Washington Street, and Otsego Middle School were all awarded National Showcase Schools through Capturing Kids’ Hearts. Numerous athletic teams earned conference, district and regional titles. The Boys Cross Country team brought home the state championship. The High School Marching Band set a new school record, earning 26 trophies throughout the school year. The high school musical returned to the stage; “Wizard of Oz” was performed for two weekends with big crowds. Solar arrays have been installed and are operating on all campuses. Work continued on projects from the May 2020 Bond, including installation of playground equipment at each elementary building, and LED lighting was installed at all elementaries and the Middle School. Construction of the Aquatic Center has begun, with completion expected in August 2023.. An updated District Strategic Plan was finalized. The Superintendent Student Advisory Council was created for Middle and High School students and has been meeting regularly.

Nationally Recognized for Capturing Kids’ Hearts Capturing Kids’ Hearts recognized Alamo, Dix Street, Washington Street and Otsego Middle School as National Showcase Schools for 2021-22. This designation acknowledges the work and effort our staff puts into CKH to create a positive culture focused on putting relationships first. CKH is a national program that Otsego partnered with more than 10 years ago. CKH provides training and tools to help staff and students create a welcoming, empowering, and positive environment. This is the 3rd year that Dix Street and OMS received this designation, the 2nd year for A few students and staff gather for a quick celebration Washington Street and the 1st for on the day of the announcement at DSE. These accomplishments are significant, should be celebrated and are the result of the collaboration between students, families, staff and the community. Thank you for your continued support of Otsego Public Schools. Please note that the 2022-23 school year will begin prior to Labor Day. Otsego Public Schools applied for a Pre-Labor Day Waiver in January 2022 through the Michigan Department of Education, which was approved and will be effective for the next three years. The first student day will be August 15th and the first three weeks of school will be four day weeks, with the district being closed for school on Fridays. Otsego Public Schools will again have two Intersessions, one will be October 21-24 and the other is scheduled for February 13-17. I plan to survey parents/guardians next year to gather feedback regarding our school calendar, as we plan for the 2023-24 and 2024-25 school years. Please look for further information in the Fall. I trust the summer will provide many opportunities for you to spend with family, friends, and enjoy favorite warm weather activities! Thank you for your continued support of Otsego Public Schools.

Congratulations, retirees!

Best wishes to this year’s retirees! Tonya Jazayeri spent 18 years at Otsego as a Speech Pathologist. Herve Dardis spent 22 years at Otsego as the high school principal. Dave Noyes spent 25 years at Otsego teaching science.

Reflection and Preparation

As the 2021-2022 school year comes to a close it makes us reflect both on the year we are finishing, the new school year ahead of us and, of course, what happens in the middle - summer. This school year we have been able to add additional temporary, grant-funded employees to help fill the learning gaps of any COVID learning loss that may have occurred for students. We have also increased support in the social emotional department as well to support students and families. We have found this to be immensely beneficial as we are trying our best to move student achievement in a positive direction. We have seen our students come back full time and flourish this year and have enjoyed them and their excitement for school. Our virtual program also welcomed students back and has given families partaking in this educational

programming what they needed. We have invited approximately 175 students to summer programming to fill learning gaps and reduce the summer slide. We will host an elementary, middle and high school program this summer. As we look to fall, we are very excited to kick off work groups on our Board of Education’s new strategic plan. The plan is student-centered and future-oriented for our students. We believe some great new programs, systems, and experiences will begin to take shape for our students at OPS and we can’t wait to roll up our sleeves and get started! I wish all of our OPS families a relaxing, fun-filled summer. Please read to your children, encourage them to read books on their own, and find ways to learn new things over the summer together.

Rotary Steps Up for Summer Reading Hundreds of books are now in the home libraries of dozens of Otsego students thanks to the Otsego Rotary. They received a grant to help with summer literacy and matched it to purchase $3,000 in books for elementary students. This program is called “Step Up to Summer Reading.” Several students, in grades K-3, got to “shop” for seven books from a wide selection. Rotary members handed out the shopping bags, helped students find good-fit books and were able to spend some time reading with them, as well.

Concerts were back in full swing this year and it was music to our ears! The traditional collage and pops concerts were phenomenal at the high school and the middle school bands and choir performed beautifully. Finally, the OMS & OHS bands added one more concert to their schedule this year to highlight a new genre. Starting in January, students could join the Jazz Band which met after school once a week. OHS Robotics, Destination Imagination Take World Stages

The OHS FIRST Robotics team made history by competing in their first FIRST Robotics Championship tournament held in Houston in April. They ended their run placing 33 out of 75 teams. “It’s super cool to be part of a history-making team for Otsego. We’ve never had a team make it so far in the state competition, let alone qualify for worlds,” said senior Ben Bickel.

The Alamo Destination Imagination (DI) team had an epic season, taking 2nd place at the Global Finals in May. The team, made up of five Alamo 5th grade students, met after school starting in October to choose a challenge and prepare for competition. They chose the Fine Arts challenge in which they had to create a skit with props and costumes. Their plot had to include a problem and solution and lots of creativity. DI is a great way to learn teamwork, communication and problem solving.

To make it to the World Finals, they had to place in the top 64 in Michigan to qualify. For Michigan, that means they’re in the top 5-7% of teams; Michigan has 450 teams. Before that, they compete in two regional competitions where they earn points through their tournament play to earn a spot at state.

They placed 1st at State in both their performance and in an instant challenge. At the Global Finals in Kansas City, they felt they had done well, but didn’t know how well. Their name and 2nd place finish flashed on the big screen at Municipal Arena and they went crazy with excitement! “It was so exciting running down the aisle to the front stage,” says the DI coach Terry Webber. “ Webber has coached DI teams for years and has made it to Global Finals nine times; this their first Global placement.

Otsego High School launched their very first FIRST Robotics team in 2014. Each year, the team gets stronger and performs better and they’re confident they’ll make it back to the championship. Otsego has Robotics teams in both middle school and high school. The OMS Robotics season is in the fall.

What is it? Preschoolers Explore Nature Around Them! Nature and technology come together on the nature trails at Learn ‘n Grow Early Childhood Education Center! Students used image recognition technology on the Seek App to identify the plants and animals around them.

On another hunt, preschoolers made chipmunk houses and found tadpoles in our ponds that they continued to observe in their classrooms.
