PATIENT PARTICIPATION AT THE OTFORD MEDICAL PRACTICE There have been huge changes in the way that the NHS is managed and funded. The voice of patients at GP surgeries across the county is now even more vital in ensuring that the services provided really do meet the needs of local communities. At the Otford surgery, there are now 2 active patient groups: 1. An online group, now called the Patient Reference Group (PRG). If you would like to join this group, please see the practice website www.otfordmedicalpractice.nhs.uk 2. A small group of patients (the Patient Participation Group or PPG) meets face to face with staff to promote cooperation between patients and the practice. This PPG group is keen to represent patient views as fully as possible. It will also have a role in providing input to the West Kent Commissioning Group (CCG), which now holds the funding for NHS services, and to the Care Quality Commission (CQC). The CQC is the independent regulator of all health and social care in England (GP practices, hospitals, care homes, home-care agencies and dental practices). The main ways in which patients can make suggestions or comments to the PPG:

The pog blog - a remedy for something

In the last month, amongst other things, I’ve been on holiday, sold my car (hello people I sold it to!), bought a new one, discovered that the window wipers and lights are on different sides to the old one, adopted a dog for a day and had a stupid cough. The latter resulted in the following blog post: ‘Yesterday I coughed into the ear of a colleague almost consistently for half an hour. The colleague in question was in America and we were on a teleconference, so it wasn’t quite as bad as it sounds - but it clearly annoyed her as much as me. Later she sent me an e-mail saying: Home remedy for cough: It tastes a bit nasty but it works wonders - add ginger, honey, turmeric ( 1/3 teaspoon) to boiling water and drink away. You can put two/three spoons of honey ( it just makes this concoction bearable), ginger (a small chunk about half an inch will do), 1/3 teaspoon of turmeric( otherwise it gets very strong - both color and taste wise). Sincerely, Queen of Home Remedies :o) I thanked her, told her if I died it was up to her to explain to people and got the response: My tip also comes with a Surgeon General’s warning: try at your own risk. :o) Feel better Today I thought I should try it out. I was fed up with the cough and I was really touched that someone I’ve never met would take the time to try to help me. It wasn’t like I’d really die… …I nearly died. It does work, I admit. But only in the sense that you stop breathing for what feels like a good 10 minutes so you

can’t cough. And then you can’t move for a few hours for fear of being sick. Honestly, I think it has helped a bit. If I did it again, it would probably help more, but I really can’t face it. I think it’s safe to say that this remedy may help something. I’m just not sure what that something might be. If you want to read more, I’m still blogging at http://thepogblog.wordpress.com. And if you see a car with window wipers going when it’s not actually raining….that will be me. I was probably trying to flash you a ‘thank you’…. Helen HOSPICES OF HOPE.

Shipbourne Farmers’ Market: September

The concept of a Farmer’s Market is that stallholders are the producers of what they sell. Farmer’s Markets offer these small local producers a retail outlet to sell what they have raised, grown and/or made. Without such markets many of these small producers could not make a living from the land. Stallholders should not be re-sellers of someone else’s product Ten Year Anniversary Year. Our anniversary market in May was a great success. We are now planning a very special anniversary dinner not only to raise funds for St Giles’ and Agricultural charities, but to highlight the quality and variety of produce available at the market. Albert and Michel Roux will be coming back to Shipbourne (Albert used to be the Head chef at Fairlawne and Michel went to Shipbourne school for a short time). They have taken up our challenge to create ‘a meal to remember’ by only using produce from the Farmers’ Market. Their head chef visited the market last month and he was impressed by the quality of the produce sold by our 20 local food producers. What’s available in September The warmth of the last few months provided a welcome reprieve for farmers and growers after the challenging conditions of the first four months of the year. All the promise of the summer’s long growing season is now delivering. It’s the time to enjoy an abundance of game, wonderful seafood, and here in the Garden of England, all the finest apples and dessert pears for which this area is justly famous. It looks as though the cold winter and warm summer will make it a great season for fruit so make sure you try as many local varieties as possible. You can still find the end of the summer berries but also the richer hued autumn fruit, such as plums and gages are in abundance. Fish and seafood are plentiful this month. The changing season and the return to school also herald a longing for richer more comforting meat dishes so make a vow to try game this year, particularly venison. It’s the perfect locally sourced free-range meat – minimum food miles, low in cholesterol and full of useful vitamins. Lean and tender, it suits short cooking methods such as frying and grilling. Ask our game suppliers Keiron and Wendy for recipes. If watching budgets remember that cheaper cuts of meat such as belly pork, shin of beef and lamb shank all taste particularly good and are all available at Annabells’s stall our farmer and butcher. For lighter meat, try guinea fowl. Cook in the same way as a small chicken, maybe roast wrapped in streaky bacon, and enjoy the flavour, which is richer than chicken and subtly gamey. With tomatoes, courgettes, sweetcorn, peas, cauliflowers, runner beans and onions all plentiful and cheap right now this might be the month to try making your own chutneys and pickles. You don’t have to make huge amounts – just a jar or two can be very satisfying and you might just get the bug. Winter squashes and pumpkins are starting to arrive and come in an amazing array of shapes and sizes all with different flavours and textures – try in soups, curries, gratins and risottos. Tree fruit are at their best and juiciest so don’t miss plums, damsons and greengages. They are wonderful for eating and using in preserves, ice creams, pies, and, if feeling very adventurous, even your own liqueurs and wines. (For recipes the Women’s Institute

Life saving equipment goes up in Sevenoaks and Sundridge Residents can feel safer with the installation of defibrillators outside Sevenoaks District Council’s Argyle Road offices in Sevenoaks and its Dunbrik Depot in Sundridge. The two Public Access Defibrillators - more commonly known as PADs - are available for any member of the community to use, alongside effective CPR, in the event of a cardiac arrest due to a heart attack or heart failure emergency. Training is not necessary to use the life saving devices. Anyone can use the defibrillators as they are fully automated and voice control instructions talk you through exactly what to do. Sevenoaks District Council invested in the equipment to support South East Coast Ambulance's ‘Start a Heart’ campaign to promote and install defibrillators at as many locations as possible across the South East, to make this region the safest place to live, work, travel and visit. As well as providing the defibrillators, the Council has worked in partnership with Emergency Medical Care and Training Services (EMCATS) to provide training for 70 people in their use, as well as learning basic skills in first aid and CPR. Cllr Roddy Hogarth, Sevenoaks District Council's Cabinet Member for healthy living, comments: “We’re keen to let everyone know where their local defibrillators are located. Evidence clearly shows that early defibrillation alongside CPR significantly increases the survival rates of patients suffering a cardiac arrest. This is why I am happy to see defibrillators being installed at our offices at Sevenoaks and Sundridge as this equipment could potentially save lives.” As an Ambulance Technician, Michael Whitcombe from EMCATS knows first hand the benefits of early defibrillation: “It's thought that a patient's chance of survival falls substantially for every minute that they don’t receive a shock from a defibrillator and effective CPR, and I have been very pleased to see how proactive Sevenoaks District Council has been in running this initiative.” This Council is also working in partnership with the Sevenoaks District Seniors Action Forum, local organisations, parishes, villages and owners of public buildings to explore opportunities to install other PADs in cardiac hot spots across the District. Steve Plater, Vice-Chair of Sevenoaks District Seniors Action Forum, says: “We strongly support the campaign for widespread deployment of PADs, and A&P Garden Services

have just won a Big Lottery Fund grant to purchase six more across the District. We hope this will inspire local community groups to further develop the PAD infrastructure, making their areas ever safer for residents and visitors.” To find out more call the Council on 01732 227000, or to see what else the Council is doing to promote health in the District visit www.sevenoaks.gov.uk/health.
