By Stephanie Anthony BATON ROUGE, LA —Baton Rouge legislators and citizens gathered on the steps of the capitol regarding the proposed closure of the Baton Rouge General Midcity Hospital Emergency Room. Almost before the diverse crowd could finish the Amen for Pastor Ralph Moore’s invocation Senator Yvonne Dorsey-Colomb was at the mike laying out the problem with closing the only emergency facility for people in the heart of the city pointing out if you work downtown, live or work for Exxon or business in the chemical corridor you are in a “Jindel Death Zone”. The District 14 democrat called the plan to shut down the last critical care facility in central Baton Rouge “bad government”. “We know that if Mr. Jindal gets sick he has a helicopter at his disposal”, she pointed out. Republican Governor Bobby Jindal has refused Medicare Expansion causing millions to be without insurance coverage. One colleague of then legislator Bobby Jindal reminded those present at the rally that he had helped push LaChip through in 1998. It is a Medicaid expansion program for children. Newlywed Representative Edward Ted James was on hand for what he considers and emergency situation. The lawyer and McKinley High School grad wishes Earl K. Long had not been shut down before he was elected to office. The District

Andrus pastor of Saint Paul Catholic Church came to the mike to declare “The gospel demands justice”, “He went on to point out in no uncertain terms that in the case of heart attack or a stroke every moment counts. His voice thundered in the crowd, “Our Lives Matter”! A long time Baton Rouge native recounted when she was taken to Baton Rouge General Emergency room in the 1950s stricken with polo. How her disabled son was rescued in the emergency room with an overdose and how most recently her mother had an accident and was treated at B.R. General ER. Sharon Weston Broome served as moderator of the rally and although the Baton Rouge delegation has not thus far been included in the conversations for solutions they have individual suggestions including having major corporations like Exxon donate annually to “the general”. Another suggestion was to readjust the state contribution to the B.R. General emergency room to be on par with its contribution to Our Lady of the Lake. A stop gap suggestion was to extend the shutdown date beyond 60 days. Several participants want to have all urgent care clinics to operate 24 hours a day until the crises is over. Most agreed the best long term solution was to have the governor accept the federal “Obama Care” expansion.

Child Missing Since 2012 Returned Home

ecently, a 16 year old girl that had been missing from Columbus, Ohio since 2012 was found alive in a West Virginia hotel with a 50-year old man and her 1-year old child. Neighbors reported that the girls mother still had a missing children’s poster in her car hoping one day that her child would be found and returned home. If you are ever at a loss for what to pray for, you can always choose to pray for missing children. Some are missing due to abduction and others are runaways. Either way we believe that they can be brought home safely.

What to Do If Your Child Is Missing • Contact your local law enforcement IMMEDIATELY! Often the first 24 hours are the most critical for locating a missing child. • If the child is missing from home, begin by thoroughly searching the house. Be sure to check any places a child could crawl, hide, and possibly fall asleep.

From Noah to Exodus to the forthcoming Last Days in the Desert, a fictional look at Jesus’ temptation in the desert, Scripture has returned to the screen. But what is America’s relationship with the Bible? In the annual “Bible-Minded” cities report, Barna Group explores how Bible engagement plays out regionally in the United States. The study, based on interviews with 62,896 adults over a 10-year period, shows how people in the nation’s 100 largest media markets view and use the Bible.

What Is a Bible-Minded City?

Each year, in partnership with American Bible Society, Barna Group ranks the nation’s top media markets based on their level of Bible engagement. Individuals who report reading the Bible in a typical week and who strongly assert the Bible is accurate in the principles it teaches are considered to be Bible-minded. This definition captures action and attitude—those who both engage and esteem the Christian scriptures. The rankings thus reflect an overall openness or resistance to the Bible in various cities of the nation.

The Top Bible-Minded Cities in 2015

As in past years, the South—the “Bible Belt” of America—still has the most Bible-minded cities in the country. All of the cities in the top 10—where at least 46% of the population qualifies as Bible-minded— are southern cities. However, after three years of having the most Bible-minded city

in America, Tennessee has ceded the top spot to Alabama. The most Bible-minded city in 2015 is Birmingham, AL, with 51% of its population qualifying as Bible-minded. Tennessee still holds the second and third spots with Chattanooga (50%) and the Tri-Cities (50%). Knoxville, TN—the most Bible-minded city in 2013—dropped out of the top 10 list altogether in 2015 and is now ranked eleventh with 42% of its population qualifying as Bible-minded. Other cities in the top ten include Roanoke/Lynchburg, VA (48%), Shreveport, LA (46%), Springfield, MO (46%), Jackson, MS (46%), Charlotte, NC (46%), the Greenville SC and Asheville, NC area (46%) and Little Rock, AR (46%).

The Least Bible-Minded Cities in 2015

The bottom 10 cities are primarily divided between the northeast and the west. New York City—the country’s largest media market—entered the bottom ten for the first time this year. The Big Apple is ranked 91st on the 2015 list, with only 17% of its residents being Bible-minded. The least Bible-minded city in 2015 is once again Providence, RI, where only 9% of residents are Bible-minded. Other cities in the bottom ten include the Albany, NY area (10%), Boston, MA (14%), the San Francisco, CA area (15%), Cedar Rapids, IA (15%), Las Vegas, NV (15%), Hartford, CT (16%), Buffalo, NY (16%), Phoenix, AZ (17%) and Salt Lake City, UT (17%). The Glory Center was the site of the first annual Gloryland Black History Musical. On Friday, February 27 choirs from the area came out to share their musical gifts. Attendees were blessed with soul stirring renditions of Negro Spirituals, hymns and songs of faith. Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church, Greater Mount Olive Baptist Church, Greater New Bethel Baptist Church/Marcy Fishers & Friends and The Gloryland Sanctuary Choir all made stellar presentations. One of the highlights of the evening was The Story Behind The Glory/Moments

in Black History. At Gloryland during Black History Month the ministry focuses on history makers from our communities our families and the local Body of Christ. Two attorneys, a cardiologist, a nurse, a pharmacist and a pastor composed the lineup of those recognized for their accomplishments and their community involvement: Attorney Michael R D Adams, Attorney Erika L. Stop texting and driving Baton Rouge The life you save may be your own! By Mydra L. Kelly, Freelance writer/reporter I am super excited to be a part of the Gospel praise reporter! So I was thinking, what do I want to say to my fellow brothers and sisters in the city? You know I was about to get all deep and philosophical when I heard “keep it simple”, and here is a message that needs to be heard...Stop texting and driving before you kill somebody! Yeah, that’s like a rheama word huh? Well, really if you are like me, moving through the city trying to get from place to place to get things done; man it has been scary to watch people on these cell phones. Now being the progressive young business woman myself that I am, trust me I know that your cell phone can be your lifeline, but unfortunately people, it may also be your death sentence if you do not learn to practice safety and use wisdom while driving. The other day I was on the I-10 heading across town and this guy was holding up traffic. When I got a little bit closer I realized he had a cell phone in his hand, texting! Can you believe that? On the interstate in mid-day traffic. Who does that? Well let me answer that question for you... Black, White, Latino, other, young and old. That’s right. I was beside a senior the other day and she couldn’t go when the light turned green for texting in senior time, “slow motion” and this is what the cars behind her were in too. I must confess that I blew my horn and almost gave her a heat attack trying to urge her to put down that cell phone and drive! Lord forgive me. Now don’t get me wrong, I am always happy to see elderly people keep up with the times, but now that you’ve made it to your promised age don’t snatch away mine! I want to make it to get my discounts too. This is unbelievable I tell you people and something has to be done about it. For many years I worked with organizations that campaigned against drunk driving, but I tell you this texting stuff is way more prevalent and dangerous. I want you to do me a favor; when you put down the paper and get back into your car, pay attention. Just see how many people you witness texting and driving on a ten minute journey. I promise you that it is scary. Why one day I even saw a young woman face-timing at the red light. She had her phone propped up on the steering wheel talking to her girlfriend as she looked at her face while driving. Really! She was not that cute. Are you kidding me? There is nothing, and I do mean “nothing” that important, that it

cannot wait for you to talk about until you get to a place where you can do it without putting other peoples lives in danger. Listed below are some of those dangers:

DANGERS OF TEXTING WHILE DRIVING Statistics provided by the National Traffic Safety Administration demonstrate that almost 5,000 traffic fatalities occur each year in the United States as a result of distracted driving. More so, nearly 400,000 injuries occur as a result of drivers failing to pay attention to the roadway. As a result, the United States Department of Transportation has demonstrated three ways which distracted drivers are commonly affected. The common categories include: • Cognitive: A driver is not focused on operating the vehicle, rather their mobile device • Manual: A driver takes their hands off the wheel to send and receive texts • Visual: The driver takes their eyes of the road to text Clearly these actions cause an individual to become distracted while driving, which is explains the great number of injuries and deaths caused by texting and driving. As a result of texting while driving, there have been many injuries and deaths. (taken from the website of Simeon & Simeon Law Firm) Other Stats tell us that over 3,000 accidents last year were caused by distracted driving; namely texting or emailing while driving, and approximately 387,000 injuries and deaths nationally were the result of this negligence. We have really gone too far. Now come on...we have not always had cell phones. What did you do before iphones took over the world? You went where you had to go and whatever and whoever could not contact you waited until you got to a

place where you could see or talk to them. It was okay and we all survived. We need to rewind just a little bit. People hear me when I tell you, it can wait. Whatever it is it is, it is not that important that you put yours and other peoples lives in jeopardy to read it, tweet it, or whatever. Please everybody put

down the phones and just drive why don’t you. Some of you already got your license out of a cracker jack box and you’re driving by a thread already, so the cell phone is making you an even more dangerous driver. Stop it! Come on Baton Rouge let’s help each other out. Pray and plead the blood before you get in your cars, and if you see someone texting and driving report them to the authorities. Get there license and get them off the road before the accident they cause becomes the next big thing on Face book or you tube, and honey it don’t matter how many hits you get if you’re dead. God wants us to love our neighbor as ourselves. Now I hope you love yourselves and all, but if you don’t , love me and the people who have purpose and need to be here to do work for the Kingdom. God wants us to be responsible and caring people. Are you your brothers keeper? Yes Baton Rouge you are. People I’m begging you, please put down the phones and stop texting and driving. Turn on your radio, get a word or get your praise on, but whatever you do put down that cell phone and leave texting and driving alone. Trust me it can wait until you get home.

BR Ministries Helps the Homeless this Easter By Celeste M. Payne Praise Reporter Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me. Matthew 25:34-36 Compared to states around the country, Louisiana has a very low rate of homelessness. The 2014 Annual Homeless Assessment report reveals that Louisiana had 4,606 homeless people which is a significantly low rate of less than 1% of the population compared to larger states like New York, Florida and California whose homeless are more than 6% of their populations. This however, does not relieve us of our duty to minister to the homeless. According to the Capital Area Alliance for the Homeless website, there are more than 900 homeless people in Baton Rouge at any given time. Jesus was our example of compassion. He taught us that every person, despite their social status is worthy of not only His care, but the care of the saints. This includes the homeless and all those in need. Recently, I had the opportunity to meet an amazing couple who serve the Lord through ministry to the homeless. Pastors Russ and Debby Gutreaux founders of Fire House Ministry display an uncompromising zeal to win the lost and help the homeless in Baton Rouge, La. Recently, they gave out hundred of coats to the homeless which was very needful considering the recent rollercoaster dips into frigid temperatures here in Louisiana this winter. As Easter approaches, God has inspired them to reach out again. On April 4, 2015 Fire House and other ministries will be going under the bridge in Baton Rouge to the feed the homeless at the April Homeless Outreach “Easter Blessings for the Homeless.” Pastors Russ and Debby in conjunction with The Edge Church and other ministries across the city will be asking for donations for this April outreach. The word of God declares that “whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will repay him for his deed.” We challenge you to ask God what you can do to assist in this ministry effort. As you help meet the needs of other, God will make sure that you lack nothing. They are in need of donations such as women clothing, water, food and other supplies. (NAPSI)—Here’s what we know: more than 29 million Americans have diabetes, up from the previous estimate of 26 million in 2010. We also know that one in four people with diabetes is unaware that he or she has the disease. If left undiagnosed or un treated, diabetes can lead to serious health problems, including heart attack and stroke. That’s why the National Diabetes Education Program (NDEP), a joint program of the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, wants people with diabetes to understand that having diabetes increases their chances for heart disease. The good news is that people with diabetes can lower their chances of having diabetes-related heart problems by managing their Diabetes ABCs. These include: • A for the A1C test (A-one-C). This is a blood test that measures a person’s average blood sugar (glucose) level over the past three months. • B for Blood pressure. • C for Cholesterol. • S for Stop smoking. If you do smoke, you can call 1-800-QUITNOW for free assistance. If you have diabetes, your ABC goals will depend on how long you have had the

disease and any other health problems you may have. The important message to remember is that taking care of your diabetes can also help you take care of your heart. Simply put, we want you to Be Smart About Your Heart: Control the ABCs of Diabetes. So what can you do if you have diabetes? Talk to your doctor and develop an action plan that is right for you. Here are key points to remember, as well as some questions to ask your doctor: • Goals for blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol are different for each person and should be based on your diabetes and health status. • Ask your doctor: • What are my blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol numbers? • What should they be? • What actions can I take to reach my ABC goals? • Your action plan should also include weight management through healthy eating, regular activity, and taking medications as prescribed. We also know that 86 million Americans (more than one in three U.S. adults) have prediabetes, a condition where blood sugar levels are higher than normal—but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. Having prediabetes puts you at high risk for type 2 diabetes. It also puts you at risk for a heart attack and stroke. If you have prediabetes, research has shown that you can delay or prevent the development

of type 2 diabetes by making simple but important lifestyle changes. For instance, losing just 7 percent of your body weight (which is about 15 pounds if you weigh 200 pounds) and being more physically active by walking 30 minutes a day for at least five days a week can reduce your chances of developing type 2 diabetes by more than half (58 percent). Whether you have diabetes or prediabetes, there are similar lifestyle changes that can go a long way to prevent or delay health problems. For example: • Choose healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables, fish, chicken and turkey without the skin, dry beans and peas, whole grains, and low-fat or skim milk and cheese. • Drink water instead of juices or sodas.

• When eating a meal, fill half of your plate with fruits and vegetables; one quarter with a lean protein, such as beans, or chicken or turkey without the skin; and one quarter with a whole grain, such as brown rice or whole wheat pasta. • Every day, write down what you eat and drink and the number of minutes you are active. • Review your meal and activity plans every day. This will help you reach your goals.
