elcome to the inaugural edition of the PRAISE REPORTER News Magazine for the Baton Rouge area. The PRAISE REPORTER was introduced in Columbus, Ohio in 2006 and has won several awards. The PRAISE REPORTER is designed to report events and topics of interest to the Christian community. The focus of the PRAISE REPORTER will be to report the many positive aspects of our community including the accomplishments of local people of all ages and denominations. Being a FREE bi-monthly faith-based publication will give us a great opportunity to showcase newsworthy people and events happening in Metro Baton Rouge and surrounding areas. Our intent is to allow the religious community to speak to itself, not to tell readers what to think, but to inform them and share good news about the great communities were we live, work and worship. Now don’t let the words FREE and faith-based make you smile too big. We sometimes tend to devalue a product when it has the words FREE, CHRISTIAN, CHURCH OR FAITH-BASED. Although it is a FREE publication, it is not CHEAP by any means. All who are involved in the production of this publication have made great and costly efforts to see that the information contained within these pages are helpful and informative. It is by the grace of God and the combined talents of the PRAISE TEAM that has made The PRAISE REPORTER possible. Our intent is to serve the religious community by encouraging the best efforts in the community rather than focusing on negative

By Stephanie Anthony BATON ROUGE, LA —Baton Rouge legislators and citizens gathered on the steps of the capitol regarding the proposed closure of the Baton Rouge General Midcity Hospital Emergency Room. Almost before the diverse crowd could finish the Amen for Pastor Ralph Moore’s invocation Senator Yvonne Dorsey-Colomb was at the mike laying out the problem with closing the only emergency facility for people in the heart of the city pointing out if you work downtown, live or work for Exxon or business in the chemical corridor you are in a “Jindel Death Zone”. The District 14 democrat called the plan to shut down the last critical care facility in central Baton Rouge “bad government”. “We know that if Mr. Jindal gets sick he has a helicopter at his disposal”, she pointed out. Republican Governor Bobby Jindal has refused Medicare Expansion causing millions to be without insurance coverage. One colleague of then legislator Bobby Jindal reminded those present at the rally that he had helped push LaChip through in 1998. It is a Medicaid expansion program for children. Newlywed Representative Edward Ted James was on hand for what he considers and emergency situation. The lawyer and McKinley High School grad wishes Earl K. Long had not been shut down before he was elected to office. The District

Andrus pastor of Saint Paul Catholic Church came to the mike to declare “The gospel demands justice”, “He went on to point out in no uncertain terms that in the case of heart attack or a stroke every moment counts. His voice thundered in the crowd, “Our Lives Matter”! A long time Baton Rouge native recounted when she was taken to Baton Rouge General Emergency room in the 1950s stricken with polo. How her disabled son was rescued in the emergency room with an overdose and how most recently her mother had an accident and was treated at B.R. General ER. Sharon Weston Broome served as moderator of the rally and although the Baton Rouge delegation has not thus far been included in the conversations for solutions they have individual suggestions including having major corporations like Exxon donate annually to “the general”. Another suggestion was to readjust the state contribution to the B.R. General emergency room to be on par with its contribution to Our Lady of the Lake. A stop gap suggestion was to extend the shutdown date beyond 60 days. Several participants want to have all urgent care clinics to operate 24 hours a day until the crises is over. Most agreed the best long term solution was to have the governor accept the federal “Obama Care” expansion.

Child Missing Since 2012 Returned Home

ecently, a 16 year old girl that had been missing from Columbus, Ohio since 2012 was found alive in a West Virginia hotel with a 50-year old man and her 1-year old child. Neighbors reported that the girls mother still had a missing children’s poster in her car hoping one day that her child would be found and returned home. If you are ever at a loss for what to pray for, you can always choose to pray for missing children. Some are missing due to abduction and others are runaways. Either way we believe that they can be brought home safely.

What to Do If Your Child Is Missing • Contact your local law enforcement IMMEDIATELY! Often the first 24 hours are the most critical for locating a missing child. • If the child is missing from home, begin by thoroughly searching the house. Be sure to check any places a child could crawl, hide, and possibly fall asleep.

n the name of Jesus I command you Satan to “Back the hell up.” How many times have you felt like saying this? Recently a colleague and I were expressing our frustration with the “enemy’s” efforts not only to place obstacles in our way but to literally destroy our dreams, and ultimately us. I often find myself in conversations with other believers who make the statements; “If it ain’t one thing, it’s another” or “Every time I turn around something else comes up.” I too am guilty of those “Throw my hands up” statements. But on this day, I found myself saying “Satan back the hell up” translation; “Go back to the pits of hell from whence you came”. James 4:7, “Submit yourselves therefore to God,

• If your child disappears when you are away from home -- at a shopping center, for example -- notify the manager of the store and the security office. Request assistance in finding your child. Then telephone the police immediately. • If your child has run away, contact friends of the child; chances are good they’ve confided their plans to a friend. This information should be provided to law enforcement.

• When talking with law enforcement, try to stay calm. Identify yourself, and give your location. Ask that an officer be sent to take a report on your missing child. • Be prepared to give descriptive information on your child including name, height, weight, and date of birth. Also provide information on specific identifiers such as eye glasses, braces, pierced ears, and a description of the clothing your child was last seen wearing. • Listen carefully to the instructions of the police and respond to their questions. • Request that your child be immediately entered into the National Crime Information Center’s (NCIC) Missing Person File. This will assist other law enforcement agencies in identifying your child if they are located in another community. An NCIC entry for a missing child is required by state and federal law. • Contact the Louisiana Clearinghouse for Missing and Exploited Children by calling 1-800-434-8007. but resist the devil and he will flee,” along with numerous other scriptural references support my command to Satan to “Back the hell up.” In trying to determine if the title of this editorial is appropriate for a Christian publication, I began to “Talk it up.” “Back the hell up; take your hands off of me. . . I’m God’s property...”Back the hell up”, don’t you get it?” “No weapon formed against me shall prosper.” (Isaiah 54:17). ”Back the hell up”…..”Get thee behind me Satan.” (Matthew. 16:23). “Back the hell up” …..”Nothing shall separate me from the love of God.” (Romans 8:3139). Other scriptural references support my powerful word….”Back the hell up”... All of this began to pour out the more I talked it out….Don’t you get it Satan”? ”I belong to God.” So back the hell up in the name of Jesus.

The more I self-talked, the more support I found to give my hard times, shortcomings and broken dreams a change of address. You don’t live here anymore.” Car trouble, illness, injury, financial ruin, home invasions, death of loved ones….you name it, “You don’t live here anymore.” So what do you do? “You speak to that mountain, and tell it to be cast into the sea;” Mark 11:23…..”Back the hell up.” We can rant and rave, argue with people, and literally “curse them out.” Of course not you. We even invite them to go to hell. But when it comes to the one who should be sent there because that’s where he belongs, we shy away from telling him (Satan) to “Back the hell up.” In trying to reach our destiny, far too often we find ourselves backed into a corner. Challenge after challenge

causes us to move even further back, eventually ending up in a corner like a trapped animal. The only thing between you and your blessing is Satan himself. You see him, you recognize him…so what do you do? Tell him to “Back the hell up…” So the next time you are faced with a challenge, or difficulty for which there seem to be no way out, pray let God handle it and tell Satan, “In The Name Of Jesus, back the hell up!” Kerwyn Fealing is one of the most recognizable and sought after voices in the area. “The Golden Voice” has more than two decades in Gospel radio and is the owner of Fealing Good Productions; specializing in voice-over, event hosting, graphic design and ministry marketing. PR•NATIONALNews America’s Most Bible Minded Cities: Shreveport #5, Baton Rouge #18

H

ollywood has been betting big money that America still loves the Bible. From Noah to Exodus to the forthcoming Last Days in the Desert, a fictional look at Jesus’ temptation in the desert, Scripture has returned to the screen. But what is America’s relationship with the Bible? In the annual “Bible-Minded” cities report, Barna Group explores how Bible engagement plays out regionally in the United States. The study, based on interviews with 62,896 adults over a 10-year period, shows how people in the nation’s 100 largest media markets view and use the Bible.

What Is a Bible-Minded City?

Each year, in partnership with American Bible Society, Barna Group ranks the nation’s top media markets based on their level of Bible engagement. Individuals who report reading the Bible in a typical week and who strongly assert the Bible is accurate in the principles it teaches are considered to be Bible-minded. This definition captures action and attitude—those who both engage and esteem the Christian scriptures. The rankings thus reflect an overall openness or resistance to the Bible in various cities of the nation.

The Top Bible-Minded Cities in 2015

As in past years, the South—the “Bible Belt” of America—still has the most Bible-minded cities in the country. All of the cities in the top 10—where at least 46% of the population qualifies as Bible-minded— are southern cities. However, after three years of having the most Bible-minded city

in America, Tennessee has ceded the top spot to Alabama. The most Bible-minded city in 2015 is Birmingham, AL, with 51% of its population qualifying as Bible-minded. Tennessee still holds the second and third spots with Chattanooga (50%) and the Tri-Cities (50%). Knoxville, TN—the most Bible-minded city in 2013—dropped out of the top 10 list altogether in 2015 and is now ranked eleventh with 42% of its population qualifying as Bible-minded. Other cities in the top ten include Roanoke/Lynchburg, VA (48%), Shreveport, LA (46%), Springfield, MO (46%), Jackson, MS (46%), Charlotte, NC (46%), the Greenville SC and Asheville, NC area (46%) and Little Rock, AR (46%).

The Least Bible-Minded Cities in 2015

The bottom 10 cities are primarily divided between the northeast and the west. New York City—the country’s largest media market—entered the bottom ten for the first time this year. The Big Apple is ranked 91st on the 2015 list, with only 17% of its residents being Bible-minded. The least Bible-minded city in 2015 is once again Providence, RI, where only 9% of residents are Bible-minded. Other cities in the bottom ten include the Albany, NY area (10%), Boston, MA (14%), the San Francisco, CA area (15%), Cedar Rapids, IA (15%), Las Vegas, NV (15%), Hartford, CT (16%), Buffalo, NY (16%), Phoenix, AZ (17%) and Salt Lake City, UT (17%). Stop texting and driving Baton Rouge The life you save may be your own! By Mydra L. Kelly, Freelance writer/reporter I am super excited to be a part of the Gospel praise reporter! So I was thinking, what do I want to say to my fellow brothers and sisters in the city? You know I was about to get all deep and philosophical when I heard “keep it simple”, and here is a message that needs to be heard...Stop texting and driving before you kill somebody! Yeah, that’s like a rheama word huh? Well, really if you are like me, moving through the city trying to get from place to place to get things done; man it has been scary to watch people on these cell phones. Now being the progressive young business woman myself that I am, trust me I know that your cell phone can be your lifeline, but unfortunately people, it may also be your death sentence if you do not learn to practice safety and use wisdom while driving. The other day I was on the I-10 heading across town and this guy was holding up traffic. When I got a little bit closer I realized he had a cell phone in his hand, texting! Can you believe that? On the interstate in mid-day traffic. Who does that? Well let me answer that question for you... Black, White, Latino, other, young and old. That’s right. I was beside a senior the other day and she couldn’t go when the light turned green for texting in senior time, “slow motion” and this is what the cars behind her were in too. I must confess that I blew my horn and almost gave her a heat attack trying to urge her to put down that cell phone and drive! Lord forgive me. Now don’t get me wrong, I am always happy to see elderly people keep up with the times, but now that you’ve made it to your promised age don’t snatch away mine! I want to make it to get my discounts too. This is unbelievable I tell you people and something has to be done about it. For many years I worked with organizations that campaigned against drunk driving, but I tell you this texting stuff is way more prevalent and dangerous. I want you to do me a favor; when you put down the paper and get back into your car, pay attention. Just see how many people you witness texting and driving on a ten minute journey. I promise you that it is scary. Why one day I even saw a young woman face-timing at the red light. She had her phone propped up on the steering wheel talking to her girlfriend as she looked at her face while driving. Really! She was not that cute. Are you kidding me? There is nothing, and I do mean “nothing” that important, that it

cannot wait for you to talk about until you get to a place where you can do it without putting other peoples lives in danger. Listed below are some of those dangers:

DANGERS OF TEXTING WHILE DRIVING Statistics provided by the National Traffic Safety Administration demonstrate that almost 5,000 traffic fatalities occur each year in the United States as a result of distracted driving. More so, nearly 400,000 injuries occur as a result of drivers failing to pay attention to the roadway. As a result, the United States Department of Transportation has demonstrated three ways which distracted drivers are commonly affected. The common categories include: • Cognitive: A driver is not focused on operating the vehicle, rather their mobile device • Manual: A driver takes their hands off the wheel to send and receive texts • Visual: The driver takes their eyes of the road to text Clearly these actions cause an individual to become distracted while driving, which is explains the great number of injuries and deaths caused by texting and driving. As a result of texting while driving, there have been many injuries and deaths. (taken from the website of Simeon & Simeon Law Firm) Other Stats tell us that over 3,000 accidents last year were caused by distracted driving; namely texting or emailing while driving, and approximately 387,000 injuries and deaths nationally were the result of this negligence. We have really gone too far. Now come on...we have not always had cell phones. What did you do before iphones took over the world? You went where you had to go and whatever and whoever could not contact you waited until you got to a

place where you could see or talk to them. It was okay and we all survived. We need to rewind just a little bit. People hear me when I tell you, it can wait. Whatever it is it is, it is not that important that you put yours and other peoples lives in jeopardy to read it, tweet it, or whatever. Please everybody put

down the phones and just drive why don’t you. Some of you already got your license out of a cracker jack box and you’re driving by a thread already, so the cell phone is making you an even more dangerous driver. Stop it! Come on Baton Rouge let’s help each other out. Pray and plead the blood before you get in your cars, and if you see someone texting and driving report them to the authorities. Get there license and get them off the road before the accident they cause becomes the next big thing on Face book or you tube, and honey it don’t matter how many hits you get if you’re dead. God wants us to love our neighbor as ourselves. Now I hope you love yourselves and all, but if you don’t , love me and the people who have purpose and need to be here to do work for the Kingdom. God wants us to be responsible and caring people. Are you your brothers keeper? Yes Baton Rouge you are. People I’m begging you, please put down the phones and stop texting and driving. Turn on your radio, get a word or get your praise on, but whatever you do put down that cell phone and leave texting and driving alone. Trust me it can wait until you get home.

PR•MINISTRYSpotlight

BR Ministries Helps the Homeless this Easter By Celeste M. Payne Praise Reporter Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me. Matthew 25:34-36 Compared to states around the country, Louisiana has a very low rate of homelessness. The 2014 Annual Homeless Assessment report reveals that Louisiana had 4,606 homeless people which is a significantly low rate of less than 1% of the population compared to larger states like New York, Florida and California whose homeless are more than 6% of their populations. This however, does not relieve us of our duty to minister to the homeless. According to the Capital Area Alliance for the Homeless website, there are more than 900 homeless people in Baton Rouge at any given time. Jesus was our example of compassion. He taught us that every person, despite their social status is worthy of not only His care, but the care of the saints. This includes the homeless and all those in need. Recently, I had the opportunity to meet an amazing couple who serve the Lord through ministry to the homeless. Pastors Russ and Debby Gutreaux founders of Fire House Ministry display an uncompromising zeal to win the lost and help the homeless in Baton Rouge, La. Recently, they gave out hundred of coats to the homeless which was very needful considering the recent rollercoaster dips into frigid temperatures here in Louisiana this winter. As Easter approaches, God has inspired them to reach out again. On April 4, 2015 Fire House and other ministries will be going under the bridge in Baton Rouge to the feed the homeless at the April Homeless Outreach “Easter Blessings for the Homeless.” Pastors Russ and Debby in conjunction with The Edge Church and other ministries across the city will be asking for donations for this April outreach. The word of God declares that “whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will repay him for his deed.” We challenge you to ask God what you can do to assist in this ministry effort. As you help meet the needs of other, God will make sure that you lack nothing. They are in need of donations such as women clothing, water, food and other supplies. Casey J PR — The last few days have been mind boggling for the 28-year old elementary school teacher Casey J. Hobbs. Between teaching her students during the day and doing radio interviews before and after classes; Casey J spent her evenings rehearsing with her band and fine-tuning the music for her first live album recording “The Truth” which took place this past Friday to a capacity audience at The Fresh

Start Church in Duluth, GA where she serves as the worship & arts pastor. Now, she opens a new week with the good news that her radio smash “Fill Me Up” has taken over the #1* slot on Billboard Magazine’s Gospel Airplay chart last month. “It’s just amazing the things that God is doing,” the bubbly self-proclaimed Flower Child says. “This is a dream come true. Another dream come true was the

completion of Casey J’s live recording. The twelve-song set of anthems “The Truth” (Marquis Boone Enterprises/Tyscot Records) releases April 21, 2015. She wrote or co-wrote six of the tunes including the rousing track “I’m Yours” and the worship ballad “Have Your Way,” a duet with singer Jason Nelson. She sang a touching hymn with her grandmother and a load of music that kept the crowd on its collective feet most of the night. Gospel luminaries such as Vashawn Mitchell, Micah Stampley, Ted Winn, Ruth La’Ontra, Marica Chisholm, Darlene McCoy (also a Radio One on-air personality) and Danetra Moore were in attendance alongside executives of the label’s worldwide distributor Taseis Media Group/Warner Music Group. They were all buzzing about how refreshing the session was and anticipate great things for the forthcoming album. “That Casey J is something incredible,” said Tobago who owns the DBS Sounds music store in Riverdale, GA. “I enjoyed her performance, heck I mean ‘The Experience’ because that is what it was. There’s something mesmerizing about her. Her beautiful smile and anointed spirit is captivating. I cannot wait for Casey J’s album.” Visit http://www.caseyjmusic.com for more news and information. Spice Up Dinner with Shrimp FAMILY FEATURES — Preparing the same old meals week after week can make dinnertime dull. Add some spice to your menu with the fresh flavor of a new protein – nutrient-rich Gulf shrimp. Shrimp is the most popular seafood in the United States. In fact, the average person consumes more than four pounds each year with 83 percent of U.S. shrimp coming from the Gulf Coast. Because of its firm texture and mild flavor, shrimp is actually the perfect substitute when you are looking for an alternative protein. From grilling to serving on salads, incorporating shrimp into your diet is a great way to add some variety and low-calorie nutrition. The nutrient-rich environment found in the Gulf of Mexico results in high-quality seafood with superior flavor and a variety of essential nutrients. Shrimp is lower in calories than many other protein sources, is low in saturated fat and is a good source of vitamins D, B-12, selenium, iron and zinc, which helps ward off diseases such as heart disease. Grilling is an excellent option for preparing shrimp because it allows you to experiment with all different kinds of sea-

sonings and flavors, such as this recipe for marinated shrimp that is a unique take on the traditional taco. Remember that seafood such as fish and shrimp are best grilled over a moderately hot fire and on a surface that has been well oiled or in a barbecue basket. Shrimp is done when the flesh becomes pink, firm and slightly opaque. Look for more recipes to spice up your dinner plans at www.eatgulfseafood.com and learn how to prepare Gulf shrimp on the Gulf Coast Seafood YouTube channel. Sock Style (NAPSI)—Until recently, men’s socks were limited to black, navy or white. Today, a stroll down the hosiery aisle reveals bold designs and countless colors. The once basic sock is now the ideal accessory for imparting flair, color or personality to a wardrobe. “The sock has replaced the tie as the canvas for sartorial self-expression,” said Trish McHale, head of marketing for Gold Toe Socks. “Socks are fashion statements and more men are putting an exclamation point to that fact.” Since 1934, Gold Toe has adapted to fashion’s fickle nature. Today, its “G” collection is the brand’s answer to the needs of a younger and more fashion-forward consumer. “This year, we’re seeing more modern and abstract geometrics—and a lot more color,” said Matthew Mull, sock designer. “But the desire to be different can lead to creative trendsetting style—and to fashion missteps.” Here are a few tips to blend bold and brash socks into your wardrobe:

• Socks should be a reflection of your personality, not a wild exaggeration. • Step into style slowly if you’re unsure. Start with updated classic patterns like rich plaids, herringbones and geometrics. • The style or weight of your socks should complement your shoes. Heavier socks are more casual; thinner socks are more upscale and dressy. • There are no rules for matching socks, but the most stylish men match them to their pants. • The key is to be savvy and dress for the occasion. Stick with the brand you trust. “The traditional dress sock will always be essential, but brighter and more creative styles certainly have made socks the perfect accessory that they have become,” said Mull. The Gold Toe brand has continued to thrive these past 80 years by combining durability and comfort with fashion. To learn more about sock style, visit www.facebook. com/goldtoe.

B y S amantha G erman A new year means tax season is just around the corner, but be careful when doing your tax returns...because making one small mistake could land you an audit by the IRS. “Well that’s why I like to come to the professionals. Hopefully that will never happen. Nobody likes to be audited. But, I’ve been coming to Sue for over 12 years. So, that will never happen to me,” said Juanita Goncalves. The risk is even higher for people making more than 200-thousand dollars a year-with one in 30 tax filers getting audited. Sue Von Zwehl -- a tax advisor at H&R Block -- has been filing people’s taxes for decades. She says electronic filing is the best way to prevent mistakes. “Doing a return on the computer, either yourself or through a professional is truly, honestly the only way to go these days,” said Von Zwehl. Not only will that help eliminate human error, it will also cut back on your chances of getting audited. Some of the most common problems are ba-

sic math mistakes. Typos or even adding an extra zero where it shouldn’t be could spark a serious investigation. Something as simple as putting the wrong digit on your social security number can trigger an IRS audit, but tax professionals say these mistakes can easily be avoided. “Take a breath. Take a moment and

“Doing a return on the computer, either yourself or through a professional is truly, honestly the only way to go these days,” said Von Zwehl. try and be sure that you have all your income on that tax return,” said Von Zwehl. Tax advisors say keeping good records is crucial when doing your taxes. They also recommend slowing down and making sure you dot your I’s and cross all of your T’s when filing, because one tiny mistake could lead you in a huge heap of trouble with the IRS.

Be Smart About Your Heart: Control the ABCs of Diabetes By Griffin P. Rodgers, M.D., M.A.C.P., director, National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK)

(NAPSI)—Here’s what we know: more than 29 million Americans have diabetes, up from the previous estimate of 26 million in 2010. We also know that one in four people with diabetes is unaware that he or she has the disease. If left undiagnosed or un treated, diabetes can lead to serious health problems, including heart attack and stroke. That’s why the National Diabetes Education Program (NDEP), a joint program of the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, wants people with diabetes to understand that having diabetes increases their chances for heart disease. The good news is that people with diabetes can lower their chances of having diabetes-related heart problems by managing their Diabetes ABCs. These include: • A for the A1C test (A-one-C). This is a blood test that measures a person’s average blood sugar (glucose) level over the past three months. • B for Blood pressure. • C for Cholesterol. • S for Stop smoking. If you do smoke, you can call 1-800-QUITNOW for free assistance. If you have diabetes, your ABC goals will depend on how long you have had the

disease and any other health problems you may have. The important message to remember is that taking care of your diabetes can also help you take care of your heart. Simply put, we want you to Be Smart About Your Heart: Control the ABCs of Diabetes. So what can you do if you have diabetes? Talk to your doctor and develop an action plan that is right for you. Here are key points to remember, as well as some questions to ask your doctor: • Goals for blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol are different for each person and should be based on your diabetes and health status. • Ask your doctor: • What are my blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol numbers? • What should they be? • What actions can I take to reach my ABC goals? • Your action plan should also include weight management through healthy eating, regular activity, and taking medications as prescribed. We also know that 86 million Americans (more than one in three U.S. adults) have prediabetes, a condition where blood sugar levels are higher than normal—but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. Having prediabetes puts you at high risk for type 2 diabetes. It also puts you at risk for a heart attack and stroke. If you have prediabetes, research has shown that you can delay or prevent the development

of type 2 diabetes by making simple but important lifestyle changes. For instance, losing just 7 percent of your body weight (which is about 15 pounds if you weigh 200 pounds) and being more physically active by walking 30 minutes a day for at least five days a week can reduce your chances of developing type 2 diabetes by more than half (58 percent). Whether you have diabetes or prediabetes, there are similar lifestyle changes that can go a long way to prevent or delay health problems. For example: • Choose healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables, fish, chicken and turkey without the skin, dry beans and peas, whole grains, and low-fat or skim milk and cheese. • Drink water instead of juices or sodas.

• When eating a meal, fill half of your plate with fruits and vegetables; one quarter with a lean protein, such as beans, or chicken or turkey without the skin; and one quarter with a whole grain, such as brown rice or whole wheat pasta. • Every day, write down what you eat and drink and the number of minutes you are active. • Review your meal and activity plans every day. This will help you reach your goals. The National Diabetes Education Program offers many re sources to help people with diabetes take important steps to stay healthy and prevent diabetes-related heart problems.
