Spring/Summer2016

PG. 4 F OCUS ON R ESEARCH Plus Annual Giving Report

From the Dean Dear Colleagues: We open this issue of our Dental Journal with stories about our research programs, including those that involve and engage students and those that are led by our faculty. Each program demonstrates the importance of our research that distinguishes our college from other dental schools in the country, while also attracting students and faculty to join Ohio State. This opportunity to discover new knowledge and share it with others helps to ensure that our profession continues to move forward. These endeavors also create partnerships with our other health science colleagues so we can work together to find ways to better care for our patients. Expect to be impressed when you read about our students who are using their talents and abilities in dental school and afterwards. Many are helping to organize events that make dental care more accessible for underserved children in Columbus through the Give Kids a Smile program. Some are winning trophies that let everyone across campus know that our students have artistic ingenuity and imagination. Others are helping to bring new digital technology – e.g., an electronic health record -into our college. And we have one recent graduate who has earned a position on the university’s Board of Trustees, while others are practicing in Ohio’s dentally underserved communities. We definitely have students who make us proud. Near the center of this issue, you’ll find pages that recognize our generous alumni and friends who have supported the college this past year. Interspersed among the names of our contributors are quotes from students who express their thanks for the support they have received through scholarships sponsored by our donors. And there are other quotes from the donors themselves who tell what prompted them to give their resources to help make our college a better place to care for patients, educate students, and conduct research. Paying it forward is clearly a tradition that our graduates believe in, and how grateful we are that this is true! For our alumni, we have many updates and lots of great news. Some stories tell about our graduates from long ago, and other stories feature our “newly minted” dental hygiene and dental graduates. Our recent graduates and those from decades past all have one thing in common -- they are Buckeyes who love the dental profession and their alma mater. And to make certain that we honor our alums who are no longer with us, this issue includes a special section for our “friends remembered.” In each issue of our Dental Journal, we proudly showcase some of our newly hired faculty members. They come from institutions around the country, and they include basic scientists with funded research programs, as well as clinicians with keen, inquisitive minds and substantial expertise. Given the highly competitive nature of faculty recruitment today, we are so pleased to have secured each of them. Their presence as new members of our college community says a great deal about our institution as a place that attracts outstanding members of our profession. In closing, I urge each of you to stay connected with our college. To make that easier, we’ve included a list of receptions for alumni and friends that we’re hosting in the coming months -- literally from coast to coast. Please consider joining us for these events! As you read our Dental Journal, you will see many of the accomplishments we have made in recent months. I hope you find it as impressive, enjoyable, and inspiring as I did! O-H-I-O!

A HEIGHTENED PERSPECTIVE

Students at the College of Dentistry have learned scientific method and the rigors of research methodology since the 1970’s through the college’s Student Research Program. Now, student research is gaining prominence with the creation of a new position designated to formally manage the program. In 2015, Scott Schricker, PhD, an associate professor in the Division of General Practice and Materials Science, was appointed as the college’s first assistant dean for student research.

“Our college has long encouraged students to engage in research, and encouraged faculty to actively participate in training them to think like scientists,” said Dean Patrick M. Lloyd. “Formalizing our Student Research Program will strengthen this rich experience for our students and ensure that exploration remains an essential part of their development, whether they plan to pursue a career in clinical practice or in academics.”

focus on research Long committed to helping students realize the benefits of research, Dr. Schricker is excited about the opportunity to continue the good work of his predecessor, Faculty Emeritus William Johnston, PhD, who retired last year. "Conducting research gives students a broader perspective on dentistry," said Dr. Schricker. "In clinical work they’re trying to solve the problem that’s in front of them, while in research they’re looking at a broader range of problems. It can make them more aware of how they approach their work. It allows them to go deeper into why things are happening.”

The Student Research Program allows students to work in a faculty mentor’s lab for up to 255 hours in a year. Dr. Schricker collaborates with students to match them with mentors based on their interests in clinical or laboratory research in areas such as microbiology, pathology, immunology, neuroscience, and materials science. With their mentors, dental students develop a proposal for a research project that they submit for approval. Students apply after spring break, and most participants start during summer semester.

Students who are accepted into the program are eligible for a variety of scholarships and fellowships from the Student research also contributes to college, endowed donor funds from advancing the field of dentistry. “It the American Association for Dental makes people take a more scienceResearch, as well as internships and based approach to their practice,” said Dr. Schricker. “That’s the hope for research programs with the National Institutes of Health. it. Ayanna Williams ’18, spent last summer researching the mechanisms by which the stress response enhances inflammatory processes. She understands the important connection between the research she is doing now and her future as a dental professional. “Participating in the summer research program has allowed me to contribute to the future of dental medicine. I appreciated being mentored by faculty and thinking critically about my work, which will make me a better dentist.”

In addition to learning research techniques, students gain valuable writing and presentation skills. Students are required to present their work at the college's annual Research Day and undergraduate students have the additional opportunity to present at the Denman Undergraduate Research Forum. Students also have opportunities to present at national meetings, such as the American Association for Dental Research (AADR), the American Association for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS), and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD). Dr. Schricker said these presentations are an important component of conducting original research. “Presenting allows the student researchers to complete the project, synthesize the data, and defend their hypothesis,” Dr. Schricker said. “It’s also a way to showcase what they’ve been doing. Many of these students complete their work evenings and weekends. Presenting allows them to say to others, ‘This is the really cool work I’ve been doing. This is what I’ve been learning this whole time.’” Dr. Schricker himself has mentored students in his materials lab and has published papers with mentees as co-authors. “It has been a really good experience,” he said. “When you find a student who is enthusiastic, it’s great for everyone. Good work gets done, and they get an in-depth understanding of dental materials.” One of Dr. Schricker’s goals as assistant dean is to raise awareness of the program and increase participation. Currently 26 students are conducting research through the program; Dr. Schricker would like that number to grow.

“We’re always trying to get more students involved,” he said. “The challenge is that the dental curriculum is extremely demanding, so research is in addition to their other responsibilities. You have to find students who are willing to go above and beyond.” Projects can take anywhere from months to years—and can lead to new projects. Many students revel in the opportunities. “When you have an inquisitive student, he or she can just keep going,” said Dr. Schricker. “There is always the next question to be answered.” ■

A M AT T E R O F TA S T E : Susan Travers, PhD and Joe Travers, PhD find motivation and taste go hand in hand

Taste may seem like a fairly simple phenomenon, but in reality it is a powerful motivator that can affect how we act and ultimately the quality of the life we live. “We all have a taste system, and it contributes to our everyday enjoyment of life,” said Susan Travers, PhD. “It impacts what we eat and how much we eat. In turn what we eat and how much we consume has major implications for diseases such as cancer and diabetes as well as our dental state.” Susan and her husband, Joseph Travers, PhD, are professors in the College of Dentistry’s Biosciences Division who have worked together for nearly 40 years researching taste. At Ohio State for the last 30 years, the duo has focused on how the nervous system processes orosensory signals from the mouth, how those signals interact with visceral signals sent by the gut, and how taste impacts behaviors. Their body of work includes numerous peerreviewed papers in addition to book chapters and invited presentations. Like everything in our nervous system, the physical process of tasting involves electrical signals. Taste receptors within clusters of cells on the tongue and palate are connected to nerves that connect to the brain stem, which is a continuation of the spinal cord. When a receptor detects a specific taste—bitter, salty, sweet, sour or umami—it sends an electrical signal to the brain stem that from there goes to other regions in the brain involved with discernment, motivation, and basic oromotor functions like chewing and swallowing.

The taste receptors in our mouth, however, aren’t the brain’s only source of input during feeding. It also receives messages from the vagus nerve, the largest cranial nerve. One that runs from the brain stem to the abdomen and sends signals to and from every major organ. When the vagus nerve senses the abdomen has reached capacity, it sends a message to the brain that we are “full” and the signals from our taste receptors become dulled. Food becomes less interesting, and we stop eating. The gut’s “full” message isn’t necessarily the final word on appetite, though. Instead, it may just apply to a specific taste, and other taste receptors can still pipe up. After filling up on a hearty meal of savory tastes, for example, we can find a sweet dessert still sounds good. On the other hand, visceral and taste signals may collude after a gut-wrenching experience with food poisoning to create a lasting aversion to a particular food. In December 2015, the Traverses published their first paper on the implications of gastric bypass surgery on taste. “Gastric bypass is more complex than just making the stomach smaller,” Joe says. “There’s a real change in appetite and profound

swallow the stimulus,” Susan said. Scientists initially assumed those sweet receptors were the only ones, but many have come to suspect that there are additional mechanisms that detect glucose and other simple sugars. By examining neural responses to sweet stimuli in mice that are missing the known sweet receptors, Susan’s new study may help determine the presence of a different mechanism that triggers the body’s anticipatory insulin response.

Drs. Joe and Susan Travers, seen here in their lab at the College of Dentistry, have worked together for nearly 40 years researching taste.

changes in the peripheral and central nervous systems. It impacts food preference and other behaviors.” The study, which they co-authored with colleagues at Florida State University and University College Dublin, examined how a high-fat diet and gastric bypass surgery affect the excitability of neurons that sense taste and signal satiety. It found that a high-fat diet kept potassium channels within the satiety neurons more open than usual, and the cells subsequently became less excitable. After surgery, however, those effects reversed. “A high-fat diet renders the satiety system less excited—it just doesn’t deliver the kick,” Joe said. “What was exciting was to see that in the group that got surgery, the excitability returned to a normal state.” While the “how” of gastric bypass surgery’s many effects is still unknown, scientists in different fields are identifying the “what.” “We’re examining the brain stem and what we've found is that when you're on a high-fat diet there are cellular changes in that region,” said Joe. “But our findings are only part of the story. Other researchers studying the brain are finding changes in reward circuitry. We’re talking about a long-term upregulation of the nervous system.” In a new project that started this year, Susan is collaborating with Alan Spector, PhD, from Florida State University to study mice whose sweet and amino acid receptors have been removed. Their goal for the NIH-funded study is to determine whether or not there are other types of sensors for these tastes that have yet to be identified. The body’s sweet receptors, which were discovered roughly a decade ago, trigger major responses from the endocrine system. “When you put a simple sugar in your mouth, you will have a release of insulin before you even

8 the ohio state university dental journal

The implications of the Travers’ work are far-reaching, potentially extending into other areas of neuroscience. Several years ago, with support from an NIH program for high-risk, highreward projects, they began using an exciting new technique called optogenetics, in which light-sensitive genes are inserted into specific types of neurons. Later, in the presence of optical stimulation, only those cells respond. The technique allows the Travers to study the role of particular populations of neurons in defined brain circuits and, in turn, their effects on behavior. Ultimately, optogenetics has potential for practices such as deep brain stimulation, which uses electrical stimulation to treat conditions ranging from Parkinson’s disease to multiple sclerosis to major depression. In Joe’s opinion, the fact that the sensory function of taste can be involved in so many aspects of health and behavior makes studying taste a lifelong interest. “These are just a handful of qualities to it, and it’s limited to one behavior—a behavior that is so fundamental to life,” he says. “It’s just fascinating.” ■

SMALL TOWN

DREAMS Just like Eva Gabor’s character Lisa Douglas on the classic sitcom “Green Acres,” many urban dwellers balk at the idea of relocating to a slower-paced rural area. Knowing this, and keenly aware of the critical need for additional dentists in some of Ohio’s most rural counties, Patrick M. Lloyd, dean of the College of Dentistry, has been committed to recruiting students from areas of Ohio that are federally designated as Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs). He knows that students who call those areas home are most likely to return following graduation.

the family, friends, and towns they know. They understand the needs in their communities,” said Dean Lloyd.

“There is a tremendous benefit to recruiting students from counties in Appalachia, as well as counties in other parts of the state that are in great need of dentists, because those students are more likely to return home to

Enter first-generation college student Jake Venoy, '16 DDS, who, having just graduated this spring, is returning to southeast Ohio to live and work in Vinton County. Dr. Venoy was born and raised in neighboring Meigs County, in Pomeroy, a small village of fewer than 2,000 residents located on the banks of the Ohio River. Both Vinton and Meigs Counties have a shortage of dental professionals.

back to the area. It’s home. It’s where my family still lives. I enjoy the slower pace of life.” Because Appalachian counties are among the most economically distressed counties in the state, Dr. Venoy felt it was critical to join a practice that routinely accepts Medicaid patients so he can help the people who need him most. He received his wish when he was asked to join Hopewell Health Centers, an integrated health care agency that provides affordable dental, behavioral, and primary health care in counties throughout southeastern Ohio. Pictured above: Jake Venoy ‘16 DDS Pictured right: Dean Patrick M. Lloyd chats with Mitchell VanHoose ‘15 DDS during Dean Lloyd's visit to the Dental Clinic in Coshocton, Ohio.

Like Dr. Venoy, Class of ‘15 graduate Mitchell VanHoose, DDS, had his heart set on joining a small-town practice. When he started searching for a practice opportunity during his fourth year at the College of Dentistry, he applied only to rural areas. He was thrilled when he was asked to join Muskingum Valley Health Centers, a community-owned non-profit health care center with offices in four counties. “I knew I wanted to go into community dentistry,” said Dr. VanHoose. “I wanted to give back.” Dr. VanHoose spends part of his week providing dental care to children at a clinic in Coschocton County and the remainder of this time at a family practice in nearby Muskingum County. The clinics focus on providing children and adults in Southeast Ohio with full-service, affordable health care. Most of their patients are on Medicaid and the practices use a sliding fee scale to accommodate patients without insurance. For Dr. VanHoose, his adopted home reminds him of his hometown in eastern Kentucky. “I tell everyone I love my job,” said Dr. VanHoose. “I love working with these patients.” As for Dr. Venoy, he cannot stop smiling when he talks about the future. He, his wife, and his young daughter, Sylvie, are going home. “All of my family is happy that I’m going to be nearby,” said Dr. Venoy. “I’m just glad to be going back by the river. And I’m glad to be going to a place where I’m needed.” ■

A DREAM CAREER

Eileen (Guider) Hoehn Fallon ’46 DHY is Among Ohio’s First “Home Grown” Dental Hygienists

Photo top left: In 1946, Eileen Hoehn Fallon (first row, far left) was one of 17 students who graduated in the first dental hygiene class at the College of Dentistry. Photo top right: Eileen Hoehn Fallon ’46 DHY shares photos of her class with Dean Patrick M. Lloyd.

When Eileen Guider graduated from Columbus, Ohio’s North High School at the height of the Great Depression in 1935, little did she know that her new job as an assistant to College of Dentistry faculty member George McClellan, DDS would be the start of an incredibly fulfilling career. “I always wanted to go to college but I couldn’t afford to go, so I entered the workforce,” she said. “When Dean Wendell Postle started Ohio’s first dental hygiene program at the college in 1944, Dr. McClellan said, ‘I’ve taught you everything I can. You should enter the Dental Hygiene program.’” Unfamiliar with the profession, Guider—who is Eileen Hoehn Fallon today—responded: “What on earth is that?” Despite her initial unfamiliarity with the program, Mrs. Hoen Fallon soon learned quite a bit about dental hygiene. She went on to graduate from the College of Dentistry’s first dental hygiene class in 1946. After graduation, she joined a private practice in Mansfield, Ohio, where she practiced for 20 years before securing a teaching position at a new dental hygiene school in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Mrs. Hoen Fallon relocated to North Carolina with her husband and helped launch the new program. Over the next 11 years, she taught, continued to raise her four children, and earned

a bachelor’s and master’s degree. When she finally retired in 1982, she was director of the program she helped build—and she was still telling her students that the skills they were learning came by way of her education at The Ohio State University College of Dentistry. Today, Mrs. Hoehn Fallon, who was widowed and remarried after she retired, is almost 98 years old. Nevertheless, her excitement for the profession is still as fresh and youthful as that of a new student just entering the dental hygiene program. “I think dental hygiene is a marvelous profession,” she said. “Look at where I was able to go with my two-year program. I wish I was 50 years younger and could start all over again.” ■

A LASTING IMPRESSION Native Ohioan and part-time College of Dentistry faculty member Michael Masonbrink, ‘71 DDS discusses why he and his wife, Kaylin—also a native Ohioan and Ohio State graduate—made the decision to establish two legacy scholarships to support future generations of dental students. Q: What were your early experiences at Ohio State? A: My role models were my parents. I became a passionate Buckeye in the late 1960’s through my father’s allegiance to his undergraduate alma mater, Ohio State. I decided my junior year of high school to pursue dentistry. This career would allow me to use my hand skills in a professional environment. My time at Ohio State was during a period of social and political unrest on campus and all over the country over the Vietnam War...but, in spite of this difficult time, I felt even then that someday I wanted to return to Ohio State. In my junior year, I was fixed up on a blind date with the perfect girl who was a May Queen candidate. Her name was Kaylin Rogers. Kaylin and I married and, following my discharge from the U.S. Air Force in 1973, we returned to Ohio and established a dental practice in Canton.

The cost of a dental education can impact a student’s future…I am concerned that it will adversely affect even the choice to pursue a dental career.

Teaching is in my DNA, with parents and my wife earning degrees in education. Returning to my alma mater was a life-long goal. It allows me to give back to my profession and share my experiences of 39 years in private practice. Q: How are things different now than they were when you were a student? A: The culture of dental education is much more student friendly today. I love the camaraderie between the students, as well as the faculty/student relationship. I value the personal relationships with students; learning how they 12 the ohio state university dental journal

decided on dentistry as a career, their family background, their community, and their future goals. Sharing advice, dental perspectives, encouragement, praise, admonition, and above all support is a view shared by all our faculty. I look back fondly on the instructors who influenced my career in a positive fashion and I hope that I can have that same impact on today’s students. The most glaring difference between my education and today's is the huge impact of student debt. The cost of a professional degree has compounded. When I was in school I could cover the costs by working full time in the summer and part time during the school year, but the undergraduate and dental school debt of this generation is stifling. Q: What made you and Kaylin consider establishing legacy scholarships? A: Our oldest son, Monte, graduated from the Ohio State College of Dentistry in 2004 and completed his specialty training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in 2006—also at Ohio State. Our second son, Brent, received a college degree in computer systems analysis and our daughter, Shauna-Lyn, received her B.A. and M.S. in social work. My wife, Kaylin, returned to school and received a second degree in dental hygiene in 1998. Thus, we know the value and the cost of a college education. Even with student grants, scholarships, and loans, the cost of a dental education today can impact a student’s future—either where they practice, whether to seek immediate employment or continue in a specialty or GPR program, partnerships,

solo practice, and teaching. I am concerned that it will adversely affect even the choice to pursue a dental career. Dentistry is a challenging career, sometimes frustrating and stressful, but also well respected and rewarding. Kaylin and I have decided to create scholarship funds to benefit today’s dental students to help with their greatest need, financial support. We see the opportunity to gift legacy scholarships as the most beneficial way to give back to our profession and alma mater. This choice will extend our helping hand to future generations and reward students for hard work. We also hope that by example our gift will encourage all dental professionals, as well as this current generation, to “pay ahead” and reinvest in our dental students. This choice was more abundantly clear after returning to Ohio State to teach. To sum it up, boxing great Mohammed Ali was quoted as saying “If a man’s perspective on life is the same at 50 as it was at 20, then he has lost the value of 30 years of living.” ■

(We chose to) extend our helping hand to future generations and reward students for hard work.

Power of Generosity Two years after Richard Veler ’46 DDS graduated from the College of Dentistry, his first gift to his alma mater was a $10 contribution. In that era, $10 was not a small sum of money. In fact, according to the website "measuringworth.com," ten dollars in 1948 was worth about $100 now. While that amount may still seem like a small gift from a young dentist who was just starting his private practice in post-war Toledo, Ohio, the fact that Dr. Veler and his wife, Betty, wanted to give something back is what really matters. And it’s what sets them apart. When the Velers' multi-million estate gift was announced in August of 2009, their expressed intention to ‘give something back’ was made known. They established the Richard C. Veler, DDS and Betty G. Veler Scholarship endowment that provides financial support for dentistry students who demonstrate "merit, need, and outstanding moral and ethical character." Addressing the first-ever gathering of the college’s Veler Scholars during a dinner held in their honor at the Faculty Club last fall, Patrick M. Lloyd, dean of the College of Dentistry, praised the Velers for their generosity. “The Velers did more than give back. They set a standard and, in a single act of generosity, they followed in the footsteps of some of our country's great givers and philanthropists who, throughout the course of their lives, have given away millions of dollars so they could make the world – or at least their corner of it – a better place." Dean Lloyd added, "with the gift of their estate to our college – the largest single gift in the history of this college – Richard and Betty Veler made a difference that will always be remembered.“

Velers' generosity, compassion, and commitment to dentistry inspires me daily to pay it forward by better serving those communities in need.”

Joseph W. Pittman, ’13 DDS, who traveled to the dinner from North Carolina where he was completing his certificate in orthodontics at the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry, spoke of the many ways the Veler Scholarship influenced him. “The impact of this scholarship has been threefold for me,” said Dr. Pittman. “I now look forward to a lower monthly student loan payment, and this affects how I am planning for the future. I have the freedom to explore some practice opportunities that have low initial dividends but greater potential for growth. Second, I am even more of a diehard Buckeye and a proud alumnus of the College of Dentistry. This scholarship shows the college's commitment to invest in their students. The last reason is the one that has impacted me the most. The Veler Scholarship has been a

challenge. In dental school when I saw opportunities to take the easy way out, or ways to avoid tough jobs as class president, being the Veler Scholarship recipient pushed me to go above and beyond the already high expectations of a dental student. This is an incredibly selective group and one I want to make proud. I am now more motivated to strive for excellence professionally and personally because I represent the investment that has been made in me.” First-generation college student Jared Ellinger ‘18, who at the time of the gathering was the most recent recipient of the Veler Scholarship, spoke of his desire to extend a helping hand to others in need. “One of the biggest challenges facing dentistry today is lack of quality care to underprivileged communities. The

Dean Lloyd closed the dinner by challenging the Scholars to follow the Velers' example of making a difference for future generations of dental students. “Because of the many laudable characteristics and qualities that made you deserving recipients of Veler scholarship awards, you are already uniquely positioned to follow in the Velers' footsteps. You understand the transformational power of generosity.” ■

A REASON TO SMILE Give Kids a Smile Helps and Inspires

“Give Kids a Smile has been an invaluable experience in my dental school career, and it has had a great impact on how I will practice in the future,” said Becca Bartlett ’17, who served as the chief organizer for the last two events. Becca and her leadership team plan and publicize the event and secure volunteers, donations, and patients. “It is rewarding to not only be able to touch the lives of so many children and families, but to also have a hand in inspiring future dentists to aid in lowering the barriers to care for children and populations in need.”

Most dental professionals and students who have participated in a Give Kids a Smile day will likely agree that the event is crucial for children who might not otherwise receive the dental care they need. But as the volunteer students who participate in the College of Dentistry's event are learning, Give Kids a Smile can have an important impact on them personally. For many, the experience is creating or reinforcing a commitment to serve the community after graduation.

Faculty advisor Erin L. Gross, DDS, PhD, MS, an assistant professor in the college’s Division of Pediatric Dentistry, says the Give Kids a Smile event helps students understand there are many families with truly limited means who don’t know where to turn when they need dental care. “We can tell students about children who are lacking care, but it’s something the students understand better when they have the opportunity to talk to these kids, hear their stories, and learn more about their families,” said Dr. Gross.

Students understand better when they have the opportunity to talk to these kids, hear their stories, and learn more about their families.

“They become inspired to break down the barriers that keep young children away from the dentist, and they come to understand that it is our job to take care of the people who need us the most.” Since Give Kids a Smile started at the college in 2012, faculty-supervised students have provided free, comprehensive dental care to more than 900 underserved children, some of whom have never seen a dentist before coming to the event. “One of my favorite parts of Give Kids a Smile is when my classmates or other dental students come up to me after the event and say what an amazing time they had and that they cannot wait for the next event,” said Becca. “Some students have never provided care in this type of charitable setting, and I love to see some of them truly fall in love with service.” ■

USHERING IN A NEW ERA WITH EHR For most institutions, each year has a predictable rhythm. This is especially true for educational institutions where exams, annual ceremonies, and semester breaks are carefully scheduled. During the second half of 2014 and throughout 2015, however, the College of Dentistry’s normal routines received a well-orchestrated jolt when a group of 58 laser-focused staff, faculty, and students led the college through a major technological implementation. After more than a year and a half of planning, several days of formal classroom training, and countless hours of coding, testing, and upgrading the college’s computer network infrastructure, some 18 task forces ushered in an era of technological advancement for the college on January 19, 2016, when students, faculty, and staff greeted the New Year with an Electronic Health Record (EHR) system—axiUm. “This is a historic moment for the college,” said Fonda G. Robinson, DMD, associate dean for clinic administration and patient care. “An electronic health record will enable our college to enhance our standard of care, including improved coordination among clinics with increased operational efficiencies.” More than 168,000 patient records were converted from the college’s practice management software—Windent—to axiUm, a change that impacts how providers and staff conduct scheduling, clinical charting, financial reporting, and treatment approvals. Clinical personnel are still getting acclimated to the system, but 2016 is clearly shaping up to be a transformative year for the college. “It's been exciting to see students, staff, and faculty work together to bring digital radiography and a new electronic dental record into Postle Hall," said Dr. Robinson. "Their efforts will enable our college to offer a more contemporary education. What a benefit this is for our students and our patients!” ■ 20 the ohio state university dental journal

Kasich has appointed recent College of Dentistry graduate and current Orthodontic resident Lydia Lancaster, ’16 DDS as the graduate/professional student member of The Ohio State University Board of Trustees for a term of two years, beginning May 16, 2016 and ending May 13, 2018.

It is with gratitude, enthusiasm, and immense Buckeye pride that I embark on this journey." The Ohio Legislature enacted inclusion of students on the Board of Trustees on April 26, 1988. Since that time, the Board has included two-non-voting student trustees: one undergraduate student and a graduate/professional student. Dr. Lancaster is the first student from the College of Dentistry to serve on the Board since 1988. ■

staff, the college will continue to make progress toward its goals and those of the university.” Dean Lloyd’s reappointment follows a review by a sevenmember committee of college faculty and university leaders. Their review included a study of the college’s strategic plan and the dean’s self-assessment; surveys of its faculty, staff, and senior administrative leaders; responses from individuals at other institutions of higher learning and in the local community; and interviews with the dean’s leadership team, as well as Dean Lloyd himself. “Throughout the past four-and-a-half years, our ranks at the College of Dentistry have been enhanced with gifted and hard-working recruits. Our educational programs and clinical operations have experienced innovation and upgrading, and our research programs are flourishing,” said Dean Lloyd. “I am looking forward to spending the next five years working with students, staff, faculty, alumni, and friends to create an even better place to care for patients, educate students, conduct research, and advance the profession.” ■

D E N TA L A L U M N I S O C I E T Y PRESIDENT'S LETTER

Dental Alumni, What is good for The Ohio State University College of Dentistry is good for the State of Ohio. In the last issue of The Ohio State University Dental Journal (Volume 3, Issue 1, Fall 2015) I mentioned what a great time it is to be a Buckeye dentist and how momentum was at an all-time high. Well, it’s gotten better! The Dental School administration, faculty, and staff are ecstatic about the progress toward a new facility that will ultimately make an impact on the entire profession. Being the only state dental school in Ohio, the College of Dentistry produces the majority of dentists providing dental care in the state and this is a chance to upgrade the educational experience to an unprecedented level and elevate the dental health of the entire state. It is our time to be a priority at Ohio State so that we can better address the oral health care needs of Ohio and lead the profession forward. Having been born and raised in Ohio and having attended The Ohio State University College of Dentistry (Class of 1980), I have a sense of the overwhelming pride and affection people in the state have for The Ohio State University. As a Dental Alumni Society (DAS) member, I feel this is an important moment for our alumni that does not come along very often. It is a chance to be involved and to make an impact for future generations of dentists in the state of Ohio. The Dental Alumni Society mission statement states: ‘This society is formed to promote the advancement of The Ohio State University and its College of Dentistry and fellowship among its alumni, faculty, staff and students.’ The DAS and all alumni can help make this project ‘the best damn dental school in the land’ (tbddsitl), but we cannot do it alone, we need to do it together. What a great time to be an Ohio State Buckeye!
