STATISTICS AT OHIO STATE

STATISTICS IS A BROAD DISCIPLINE THAT ENCOMPASSES AREAS RANGING FROM DATA ACQUISITION AND ANALYSIS TO STOCHASTIC MODELING OF COMPLEX PHENOMENA TO THE SCIENCE OF DECISION-MAKING UNDER UNCERTAINTY. Founded in 1974, the Department of Statistics has grown over the past 40+ years to become an internationally recognized hub of research in statistical science and statistics education. We contribute to virtually all areas of statistical science, including the development of novel statistical theory and methodology, and engage with modern and emerging areas of interest. Many of our faculty and students participate in interdisciplinary research and make significant scientific contributions beyond the field of statistics.

DEGREE PROGRAMS GRADUATE: • PhD in Statistics The core of the program consists of course work in mathematical statistics and a variety of applied and theoretical courses in various topical areas. • Interdisciplinary PhD in Biostatistics This program is a joint venture between the department and the Division of Biostatistics in the College of Public Health. Students in this program choose between one of two specializations: methodology and public health. • Master of Science (MS) in Statistics This program is flexible enough to provide preparation for a career in applied statistics or it can be composed entirely of the first two years of coursework for the statistics or biostatistics PhD programs. • Master of Applied Statistics (MAS) The goal of the MAS program is to prepare graduate students to enter positions in applied statistics in business, industry and government. • Graduate Minor in Statistics • Graduate Minor in Statistical Data Analysis

UNDERGRADUATE: • Major in Statistics This program prepares students for graduate study as well as for entry-level positions in business, industry and government. • Major in Data Analytics, with the Dept. of Computer Science & Engineering A uniquely interdisciplinary major in partnership with the Department of Computer Science & Engineering and departments across the university that prepares students for jobs in the fast-growing and exciting fields of data science and analytics. • Minor in Statistics This minor program exposes students to basic statistical techniques and methods, and is a valuable asset to enhance most undergraduate majors and their career opportunities.

I really loved the breadth of research interests of professors at Ohio State, the variety of course offerings, and that students get to learn about their own interests through coursework and individual studies before deciding on research directions and advisors. — Matt Yin (Statistics, PhD, 2014)

My experience at Ohio State was absolutely essential to my career success. Data-science has become increasingly important to organizations and I was well positioned to capitalize on the emerging need based on my experience at Ohio State. — Mike Schumacher (MAS, 2005)

STATISTICS ON CAMPUS Our department developed one of the nation’s first bachelor’s degrees in Data Analytics in collaboration with the College of Engineering. We are a partner in administering the NSF-funded Mathematical Biosciences Institute on the Ohio State campus. Our department’s Statistical Consulting Service provides statistical support to members of the university community. We created the Mathematics and Statistics Learning Center with the Department of Mathematics, a resource center for students in undergraduate courses. Our department offers distance education courses at the undergraduate level.

Our environment is collaborative, with research teams tackling substantive questions, many of which transcend disciplinary boundaries and include faculty and students throughout the university. Our research strengths and environment translate into educational programs with strong and comprehensive curricula that train our students for careers in academia, industry and government. — Steve MacEachern, Department Chair
