Give a Gift that Benefits You and OSU! Take advantage of the new Charitable IRA Rollover now through 2007

C

ew legislation passed by Congress as part of the Pension Protection Act provides an exciting new option for

philanthropic giving to Ohio State: Make a gift from your IRA during the years 2006 and 2007 and exclude the amount of that gift from your gross income. Can you benefit? • You must be 70½ years of age or older; • The transfer must be made directly from an IRA to a qualified charity; • The amount cannot exceed $100,000 per taxpayer per year; and • The gift must be made outright in 2006 or 2007. Previously, gifts from an IRA caused some donors to pay more in income tax than if they hadn’t made a gift. Now, outright gifts from an IRA up to $100,000 per year can be made directly to qualified charities without tax complications. Carole Anderson, PhD Interim Dean

d e a n ’ s

m e s s a g e

Dear Friends,

As I write this letter, my first quarter as the Interim Dean of the College of Dentistry is coming to a close. I have been on a steep learning curve for the past three months and, I must admit, it has been an exciting ride. The opportunity of attending the Ohio Dental Association meetings, the Alumni Reunion and, of course, the annual Tailgate, has been a wonderful experience, as I was extremely impressed by the content and presentation of all of these events. In addition, I valued the conversations I had with faculty as the College held its annual retreat in September. I have been genuinely impressed by the warm welcome afforded me at all of these events. Without exception, faculty, alumni, staff and community professionals and leaders have been gracious in welcoming and demonstrating enormous support for the College. On the home front, I have appointed two faculty task forces. One task force is looking at the roles and responsibilities of the various types of faculty appointments such as tenure track, clinical and auxiliary. The additional task force is looking at the structural details of the College. Both of these came about as a result of discussions that I had with various groups of faculty. I expect both task forces to come forward with recommendations before the end of the calendar year.

In addition, I have been filling key leadership positions in the College. Dr. John Nusstein has been appointed Head of the Section of Endodontics, Dr. Henry Fields has been appointed Head of the Section of Orthodontics and Dr. Peter Larsen has been appointed Head of the Section of Oral Maxillofacial Surgery and Oral Pathology. The College is fortunate to have these highly qualified individuals willing to take on these administrative duties. With these appointments, a permanent leadership team is now in place. This was an important step to enable us to work together to move the College priorities forward. Many of you have asked me about the status of the new building for the College of Dentistry. The first cost estimate for the building was approximately $270 million, which was not financially feasible or justified. Three different scenarios were then developed, each with a different total cost. The University has asked that the College spend, this year and next, to develop a scaled down project that is more realistic and feasible. We will do this. We are working hard to assemble the needed resources to renovate the preclinical laboratories. We are close to our goal, and will proceed in a way that allows us to move our equipment when we have the new building. Also, we will continue to discuss the feasibility of launching a building fund, while we continue to

the ohio state university college of dentistry

develop the various alternatives. So, stay tuned for further developments. Another major challenge for the profession is a severe faculty shortage. We will be looking at new ways to restructure, commission and attract well qualified individuals into academic careers. This is a daunting task at a time when state support is diminishing, but we will try our best to make attractive and competitive offers. In short, my overall goal during this transition period is to ensure that the College is in the strongest possible position to recruit the very best qualified permanent dean. I thank you all for your wise counsel and continuing support. Please contact me if you have questions or concerns at anderson.32@osu.edu.

Best Regards, Carole Anderson, PhD Interim Dean

celebrating the dream Dream - an aspiration or ambition Imagine a day where a group of eager and excited students celebrates the dream of beginning their dental and dental hygiene academic careers. A dream not only celebrated by students and their families, but by administration, faculty and staff as well. September 18th was exactly such a day - a day when dental and dental hygiene students participated in the College of Dentistry WHITE COAT CEREMONY at The Ohio State University. This ceremony marked the beginning of the professional educational experience for the members of the Dental Class of 2010 and the members of the Dental Hygiene Class of 2009. The event, attended by nearly 700, was held in the ballroom at the Ohio Union. Speakers included Dr. Karen Holbrook, President of The Ohio State University, who took time out of her extremely busy Welcome Week schedule to address the entering classes. College of Dentistry speakers included Dr. Carole Anderson - Vice Provost and Interim Dean, Dr. Joen Iannucci Director of Admissions, Michele Carr - Director of Dental Hygiene and Paul Allen - Student Government President and a member of the Dental Class of 2007. The speakers’ remarks ranged from inspiring to witty, serious to lighthearted. Each offered sound advice and words of wisdom on what it takes to succeed in the professional setting.

As a special part of the event, each student received a white coat and was officially welcomed to the College of Dentistry. Six faculty members Dr. Canise Bean, Dr. Mike Beck, Dr. David Padgett, Dr. Anne Hague, Ms. Bev McClure and Ms. Wendy Moore - assisted the students with the ceremonial donning of the white coats. Parents, spouses and other family members beamed with pride as their respective loved one was introduced on stage. After the official introductions of the Dental Class of 2010 and the Dental Hygiene Class of 2009, the ceremony ended with each class reciting their respective oath and pledge.

The event was organized by Dr. Joen Iannucci along with members of the Office of Admissions and the Office of Academic Affairs. In her remarks, Interim Dean Carole Anderson said of the event, “This looks nothing like the Union, and that is saying a lot, if you know what the Union usually looks like,” indicating that the affair being held there looked absolutely first-class. Dr. Anderson was not exaggerating, as it was an elegant event. The ballroom was decorated beautifully in muted tones of burgundy with ivory and black accents. Ferns, gorgeous flowers, fall foliage and spectacular buffet tables adorned the room. Classical string music, provided by a trio of musicians - including Dr. Robert Rashid, a professor at the College - filled the air from the balcony during the ceremony. All in attendance truly enjoyed celebrating the dream of our new dental and dental hygiene students - a dream that begins with a white coat and continues for a lifetime . . .

Tailgate Time! OSU College of Dentistry Alumni Reunite to Rekindle Relationships By Jaron Terry, APR Scarlet and gray was the color scheme at the 2006 Dental Alumni Tailgate on the first weekend in September. More than 600 Alumni and friends gathered in the Grand Ballroom at the Ohio Union to enjoy traditional fare, listen to OSU Athletic Director Gene Smith and catch up with old friends, all while anticipating the soon-to-be Buckeye victory over Northern Illinois. Dr. Rich Menke (back row third from right) lead the “Molar Marauders”in their 35th reunion. In remembrance of classmates who have passed on, they are endowing the Dental Class of 1971 Memorial Scholarship.

“The Reunion Weekend really is the highlight for many of our Alumni,” says Colleen C. Garland, who is the newly appointed Director of Developmental and Alumni Affairs for the College. “The Alumni Reunion All Dental Class Dinner and the Tailgate not only give everyone a chance to reconnect and interact with classmates they may not have seen in a long time, but they also provide a forum for making new friends from other classes,” she adds.

“We have a great class whose members really wanted to do something special,” says Rich Menke, DDS. Dr. Menke, who served as senior class president in 1971 and today is in practice with Central Ohio Endodontics in Dublin and Worthington, Ohio, recalls that his all-male graduating class realized after their fifth-year reunion in 1976 that they wanted to extend their time together and do something different.

The OSU College of Dentistry honors all classes in five-year increments, annually, beginning with the 10-year reunion. Each class plans its own reception, usually held just before the Dinner, which is attended by all classes. “Although some Alumni celebrating their 50th reunion attend the Tailgate weekend, many have already marked this important life milestone in the spring, in conjunction with the Post College Assembly,” Garland notes.

“We began that fall to organize something special. With 144 in our graduating class, we pulled together a committee that assembled an entirely new event,” he says. Committee members included Drs. Craig Wright, Bill Reuter, Bill Allen, Jan Larson, Bob Dilley and Chic Conroy. The committee procured a block of 80 tickets to the OSU vs. Duke game and arranged an authentic tailgate party, which was held September 12, 1981, at the Drake Union, near the river. That evening during dinner the group was entertained by the “Prosthodontic Players.”

History Lesson This year the class of 1996 celebrated its first reunion with a strong showing, as well as unbounded energy and enthusiasm (see cover photo). Also enjoying the Tailgate was the Class of 1971, which is credited with germinating the idea for the Tailgate by hosting the first pre-game brunch at its 10th reunion in 1981.

“We still meet on a regular basis and reminisce about some of the fun we’ve arranged over the years, including having an airplane pull a trailer that read ‘Congratulations, Molar Marauders ‘71’ at our graduation,” Dr. Menke chuckles.

Giving Back In addition to the social activities of Reunion Weekend, each class generally participates in a class Giving Project. “The types of giving are as varied as the classes themselves, ranging from scholarship programs to community sponsorships to participating in the Pre-Clinic Campaign,” says Garland. “Everyone finds something that is important to them and that supports the future of dentistry,” she adds. Matthew J. Kirlough, DDS ’96, who is a member of the Board of Governors, agrees. “The heartbeat of our continuing existence as the profession of dentistry is in the quality of those who come after us. Who can take better care of the future of dentistry than dentists themselves,” asks Dr. Kirlough, in discussing why he feels it is important for practicing and retired dentists to give something back to dental education.

10

“The College really makes it easy for alumni to do something meaningful, because there are so many funds to choose from and they will accept donations toward class projects year-round,” adds Dr. Kirlough who is in practice at Metro Health Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio. When classes battle, dental students win! Matt Kirlough, DDS ‘96 (left) and Richard Cronley, DDS ‘76 (right) helped lead their class fund drives. So far, the class of 1981 is leading.

ODA Booth Features Tailgate

Ohio State Joined a Legion of Dental Professionals at the ODA Annual Session

To our faithful alumni: It has been brought to our attention that a number of alumni were given unsatisfactory service by the Dental Charter Bus provided during the Reunion Weekend. We would like to apologize to those of you who relied upon this for your transportation and were disappointed. Please know that we take seriously your concerns and have passed them on to the appropriate campus leaders. Thank you so much for making us aware of this issue and helping the College do all it can to make your reunion experience the best it can be.

Dental professionals from all over Ohio came to the Greater Columbus Convention Center on Aug. 24 through 27 to see “What’s New” in dentistry at the ODA Annual Session. Presented at the session are a number CE courses and lectures, and booths filled with representatives from over 200 dental companies. The Ohio State University College of Dentistry set up several booths at the convention for attending OSU Alumni to visit. “We gave out popcorn and raffled off prizes to Ohio State Alumni,” said Tom Dauber (pictured at top left with Rachel Childress). “We gave away t-shirts and books, and Archie Griffin signed a few posters for us. Everyone seemed to be having a good time.”

Oral Health America Awards $1,000 to Coach Trident Gum and Oral Health America (OHA) launched a promotional campaign this summer in order to promote Trident’s new gum “Splash.” The campaign included water balloon tosses in selected areas, and outreach to community dental clinics. Trident’s “Splash” donations were made through OHA to nine organizations throughout the United States. The OSU Dental H.O.M.E. Coach was one of the lucky recipients receiving a donation of $1,000. With the start of another school year, the H.O.M.E. Coach staff is busy once again, providing care to under-served children in Columbus Public Schools.

OHIO STATE COLLEGE OF DENTISTRY PERIODONTIST . RECOGNIZED FOR HIS WORK IN THE CLASSROOM Lewis J. Pay IT Forward In my few short weeks with the OSU College of Dentistry, I have been both pleased and proud to learn how important the tradition of giving back is here. Nothing illustrates this more clearly than an incredible gift I received my first day on the job.

Colleen Garland has been named Director of Developmental and Alumni Affairs Garland comes to OSU from Denison University in Granville, OH, where she served for more than nine years, most recently as Senior Developmental Officer. She has extensive experience in major and planned giving, working with volunteers and capital campaigns. A native of New Orleans, LA, Ms. Garland earned her BA degree in Organizational Communications from The Ohio State University in 1988. After college, she married a fellow buckeye and has two children ages nine and eleven. Garland is an active volunteer with the National Philanthropy Day celebration and conference in Columbus. She currently serves as president-elect of the board of the Central Ohio Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals.

Dr. Al Reader, Professor and Program Director for Endodontics stopped by with pledges from all four of his first year Endodontic residents. These young men and women each agreed to make gifts of $25,000, with payments beginning after their graduation. This is an incredible statement about the importance of their education and their willingness to “pay it forward” for future The next few pages generations of dental allow us to applaud and students. I believe it also demonstrates Dr. Reader’s recognize all donors who commitment to teaching made gifts to the college students to become great people, with integrity and in fiscal year 2006 character, as well as great (July 1, 2005-June 30, dentists. I know you’ll join me in applauding Dr. 2006). The impact of Reader and his colleagues these gifts cannot be for planting the seed of philanthropy early in the overstated. lives of these students. Faculty shortages, the need for new facilities, and a desire to increase our diversity are just a few of the challenges facing your College. Personal philanthropy can help us tackle these and other issues and we are grateful for your support. We have much to be proud of and I am honored to be part of your team. Please accept my thanks for your involvement and support of your College. I look forward to getting to know many of you over the coming months and years and welcome your phone calls (614/688-3943) or e-mails (Garland.44@osu.edu). Warm Regards,

Dear Friends and Alumni,

REvenue

There are four main revenue streams that feed into the College of Dentistry: state funding, revenue from our student clinics, philanthropic support from Alumni, corporate sponsors and friends, as well as federal and private grants that come in to support the many research initiatives of the College. As you can see by the charts that which detail our expenditures, we are at just about break even. Much of the unspent philanthropic support is being saved for donor designated purposes, such as our Preclinic Campaign, which is still underway. Over the past five years we have seen an overall positive trend in research and philanthropic funding for the College of Dentistry.

expenses

While the Trends chart shows a slight drop in giving for fiscal year 2005, in 2006 we have begun to head back in the right direction with a nearly $200,000 increase. Gifts to the College are directed by the donors and 100 percent of those funds go exclusively to support the projects for which they are intended. While fiscal year 2006 proved to be less fruitful than 2005 for our research dollars, the College has made some strategic investments that should help 2007 be our most successful year yet.

Trends

These dollars play a crucial role in the life of the College, enabling our students and faculty to have the resources they need to successfully fulfill our academic mission. Thank you for your support,

Darrell Young Executive Assistant Dean of Business and Administration

Lt. Rasha Hanna, DDS ’02

profilES

Ohio state College of . Dentistry Alumna Bridges . Cultures for Country By Jaron Terry, APR

“It was an amazing experience, definitely among the highlights of my career, so far,” says OSU College of Dentistry alumna Lieutenant Rasha Hanna, DDS ’02, of her 2004 deployment in Iraq with the United States Marine Corps. Lt. Hanna and her colleagues - physicians, Marine Corps ground unit, Marine Corps pilots, and related support personnel - were sent to Iraq attached to the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU). “I was attached to the Marine Service Support Group, which serves as part of a structure capable of setting up anywhere to take care of all medical needs for the Marines and sailors serving on the front lines there,” she explains. 34

“I would not trade that experience for anything, but admit that I’m not eager to return,” says Lt. Hanna, whose service in Iraq had been unexpected.

Circuitous Route After having earned her Bachelor of Science in Zoology from Miami University (Ohio), Lt. Hanna, who knew as early as middle school that she wanted to go into dentistry, entered the OSU College of Dentistry with a Health Professional Scholarship from the United States Navy. “I was always awed by my childhood dentist’s office and later had a really good experience with my orthodontist,” she recalls. “Because I’ve always loved working with my hands and get a lot of satisfaction from helping people, dentistry was very attractive as a career.” Immediately upon achieving her DDS in 2002, Hanna was assigned to active duty in Okinawa, Japan, with the 3rd Dental Battalion, where she provided dental care for enlisted personnel, commissioned officers and their dependents. “Working in eight clinics there, I saw a wide range of dental problems – everything from repairing teeth that had been broken in a late-night bar brawl, to providing comprehensive care that included prosthodontics, oral surgery, endodontics and pediatric dentistry,” she says. Receiving her commission as an officer of the U.S. Navy, Lt. Hanna was somewhat surprised when she found herself attached to a Marine unit. “I had no idea that one could be designated ‘greenside,’ which is the term for Navy personnel who wear the Marine Corps uniform,” she explains. Lt. Hanna (far left) provides dental care in the field.

Prior to her deployment to Japan, Lt. Hanna had completed combat courses and field training exercises in Austin, Texas. She also served humanitarian missions in the Philippines, in an exercise called Balikatan, to care for civilians. This later interaction proved to be invaluable once she arrived in Iraq. “I had not expected to be sent to Iraq, but was glad to be asked to take over a MEU surgeon position that needed to be filled there,” she explains. “That

experience - as an administrative officer tracking Marine combat casualties - was really good for me, as it helped me stretch as a professional, taking on duties that were a bit beyond my training. I briefed the MEU commander twice a day about the patients’ progress, as well as operational details of the field surgical units.” She also had helped establish the ADAL (Authorized Dental Allowance List) supplies to provide dental care to 6,800 Coalition and Foreign National Forces in Camp Ripper, Iraq.

Humanitarian Mission Lt. Hanna soon found herself tapped for yet another task that required her to stretch – this time reaching back to call upon her own childhood “training” to meet a need. She was asked to serve as a key member of a civil affairs team, which was the first FIOCAT (Female Information Operations Civil Affairs Team) to interact with the women and children of Iraq. “Our purpose was to go into girls’ schools and spread the message that U.S. Forces are there to do a good thing,” she asserts. “We distributed school supplies and assessed what other needs existed.” Although her role on this team was primarily medical, she did care for some emergency dental situations among the civilian population. “The Iraqi people are so friendly and welcoming. The minute I spoke, the women and children adopted me as their ‘sister,’ because they recognized that I speak their tongue - Arabic - but with an Egyptian accent,” she explains.

36

Lt. Hanna was uniquely qualified for this mission because she grew up speaking both Arabic and English. Raised in Steubenville, Ohio, by her Coptic Orthodox (Christian) parents who had immigrated to the United States from Egypt in the 1980s, Lt. Hanna, who was born in Kuwait, had become a naturalized citizen of the United States while a child.

“It was so rewarding to care for our fighting Marines and the memories I have of the smiling faces of the beautiful women and children will stay with me all my life.”

Lt. Hanna with students of a primary girls school . in Bagdad.

Richly Rewarded “It truly was a gift to have been part of the FIOCAT operation, as well as the 3rd Dental Battalion,” she says. “It was so rewarding to care for our fighting Marines and the memories I have of the smiling faces of the beautiful women and children will stay with me all my life,” she adds. Lt. Hanna was rewarded for her service in other ways, as well. She was awarded the prestigious LTJG Weeden E. Osborne Memorial Award, which honors a dental officer who exhibits superior leadership while serving with the Fleet Marine Force. The citation, which reads: “Lt. Hanna’s inspirational leadership and technical expertise contributed significantly to operational readiness,” is signed by Commandant of the Marine Corps, General Walt Hagee. Today, Lt. Hanna is serving as a general dentist at Naval Amphibious Base in Coronado, California. She recently was designated Lieutenant Commander Select, a promotion she is to receive within the year.

Ohio State Dental alumni: making a difference around the world Called to Duty in Beirut Recent Ohio State graduate, Julie Burris, DDS ’05, kept her head during a Non-Combatant Evacuation Operation (NEO) in the Middle East. In July, during the 2006 Israel-Lebanon conflict, President Bush assigned a task force to evacuate and protect American citizens in Beirut, Lebanon. Lt. Burris, Dental Officer of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, was assigned to the NEO aboard the USS Whidbey Island - the first ship designed to interface with a Landing Craft, Air Cushion (LCAC). Stationed about a mile off the coast of Beirut, the Whidbey Island did the bulk of its evacuation on July 21 and 22, using LCAC to transport 817 U.S. citizens to the ship. Prior to the NEO, the ship contained 750 personnel. Now with over twice its standard quota, the ship found itself challenged to accommodate the influx of new people. Lt. Burris, along with the rest of the crew, gave up her rack and, in order to get her usual amount of sleep, began practicing “hot racking,” a process where all aboard sleep and eat in shifts. Lt. Burris completed a General Practice Residency earlier this year at Parris Island, South Carolina, and was deployed soon after. Nevertheless, she has been enjoying the travel and the opportunity to do a job very few ever have the privilege to experience.

Lt. Andrew Bookwalter, Spreads the Word About Oral Health On U.S. Naval Base, Camp Lester - in Okinawa, Japan - Naval dentist Lt. Andrew Bookwalter, DDS ’03, participated in February’s National Children’s Dental Health Month. Dentists on the island planned events to help spread the word about good dental hygiene. One of the bigger projects for Navy dentists is traveling to all of the schools on Marine camps throughout Okinawa to speak with students about oral hygiene. Each presentation is adjusted to the age group’s specific needs. “For the high-school presentations, oral hygiene is discussed along with the effects of tobacco and diet

Fa ll 2006

on dental health,” said Bookwalter, division officer of the dental clinic at the U.S. Naval hospital in Okinawa. “High-school students also learn about dentistry as a career field. “In middle school, we talk mostly about hygiene, with some mention of career opportunities and the effects of tobacco and diet,” Bookwalter said. “In the elementary schools, hygiene is the focus.” Pictures of not-so-healthy teeth and gums are used to warn students of the dangers of bad dental hygiene. This is especially effective in keeping the attention of younger students.

What is the ACDE? ACDE stands for the Association for Continuing Dental Education. The logo is often found inside CDE or CE program packets sponsored by The Ohio State University. The ACDE was founded in 1991 as two regional associations merged to provide a single forum for cooperative, collaborative and mutual support among directors of university-based CDE programs. The Associations mission is to provide the highest quality of continuing dental education to university-based professionals by creating opportunities for leadership, collaboration and professional development. On August 5 though 8, Continuing Dental Education providers from Dental Schools across the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico traveled to Denver, Colorado, for the annual meeting of the ACDE. At each meeting, CDE providers share ideas, experiences and upcoming trends. This year’s meeting focused on changes with in the ADA, effects of corporate commercial CE providers on university-based CE providers, and the need for ethical standards in CE. A certified speaking professional of Joy of Communication, Ms. Joy Millis was there to lead a discussion on, “How to grow and maintain a client base.” Later, Dr. Pam Zarkowski and Ms. Durinda Mattana, University of Detroit Mercy, led the group as it developed a new strategic plan for the Association. The Current ACDE Officers Are: Treasurer: Carol Trecek Marquette University Dental School Past President: Sue Felton University of North Carolina School of Dentistry President: Lynda Young University of Minnesota School of Dentistry President Elect: Durinda Mattana University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry Vice President: Lonnie Robinson The Ohio State University College of Dentistry Secretary: Janet Gibbs New Jersey Dental School of Dentistry So remember, next time you enroll in a continuing education program, look for the ACDE logo. You know, if your school is a member of ACDE, its mission is to provide high quality programs with superior educational value. The College is a proud member of the ACDE organization and several others. The Ohio State University College of Dentistry is also ADA Cerp recognized, Ohio Dental Board Approved and certified for AGD Pace Fellowship, Mastership and Maintenance credit.
