LEADERSHIP BRANDON CELEBRATES 40 YEARS OF BUILDING COMMUNITY INFLUENCERS

The Leadership Brandon Program has worked to identify and develop civic-minded leaders in our community with insight and access of community operations through eight months of Leadership Development Days, which include a series of activities, seminars, tours and interactive presentations that nurture business relationships, improve community awareness and strengthen leadership abilities.

“Celebrating the 40th anniversary of our flagship Leadership Brandon Program is an incredible milestone, one that makes me extremely proud to be leading the Brandon Chamber to witness the program’s evolution over four decades shaping leaders, fostering growth and making an impact on our community,” said the Greater Brandon Chamber of Commerce’s executive vice president, Amber Aaron. “I’m also grateful for our Leadership Alumni members, business representatives, nonprofits and agencies that have continued to support the program. Being part of this journey for 20 years as a chamber professional and seeing individuals transform through the program’s ripple efect on both their personal and professional levels is rewarding.”

After the pandemic, the class size has been significantly smaller and some of the key visit sites were unavailable for tours.

“We also have two remarkable leaders: Suzy Gay with SouthState Bank as our class chair and Sunni Moreno with After Glow Aesthetics & Wellness as class co-chair.”

Gay, vice president and commercial relationship manager of SouthState Bank, is thrilled to be the current chair for the 2025 class.

“I am honored to serve as the chair for the class of 2025 and am excited to see the program refreshed,” Gay said. “I believe in the efectiveness of this program and how it inspires positive change and elevates the Brandon community. My hopes for the 2025 Leadership Class of Brandon are to cultivate a dynamic group of individuals who are passionate about driving positive change within our community.”

From counselling to a friendly smile, Sasha Fowler recognizes that not only are the needs of every high school student diferent, but also it often only takes a willing hand to begin making a diference in their lives. In fact, she believes that the key to boosting GPAs and improving classroom attendance is linked to providing a safe and supportive space for students.

While Fowler had begun teaching at Brandon High School in 2017, she founded BLOOM Girls Club Inc. at the school during the 2020-21 school year. BLOOM Girls Club is a nonprofit dedicated to providing female students with community service opportunities, leadership conferences and career-planning sessions, both to recognize and prepare these girls for the next stage of their lives. While the club began with six students, this year the club has 67 girls on its roster.

“Now, BLOOM Girls Club is at a place where we’re doing summer leadership retreats. We are doing three to four field trips a year,” said Fowler. “… We also do monthly sisterhood events, so it’s an opportunity for every girl to really embrace our diversity, our backgrounds, our diferent paths that we’re on and come together and just have a good time.”

To ensure these opportunities remain accessible to its members, the BLOOM Girls Club is hosting its first annual BLOOM Gala on Sunday, May 19, from 5-9 p.m. The event will be held at the Winthrop Barn Theatre located at 11349 Bloomingdale Ave. in Riverview. Admission to the BLOOM Gala includes appetizers, a full dinner, and entertainment. The event is set to include several female guest speakers, one of which is a 2022-23 graduate of Brandon High School and former member of BLOOM; currently a student at the University of North Florida, she will be discussing her own success story during the event.

One senior will also be awarded with a scholarship at this event. Submitted applications were evaluated by Fowler and a panel that included one teacher, one student success coach and one administrator to select a senior club member. Additionally, other awards recognizing community service hours and high GPAs will be presented to members during the ceremony.

Thrilled at all that the BLOOM Girls Club has accomplished during the last four school years, Fowler remains thankful of the role she continues to play in her students’ lives.

DELIVERING FOR BRANDON: MEET BRANDON POSTMASTER ARTHUR GONZALEZ

Meet Brandon Postmaster Arthur Gonzalez. With over 14 years of working for the United States Postal Service (USPS), Gonzalez is proud to be the postmaster and help oversee the continued growth and change in the USPS both locally and nationally.

Gonzalez started working for the postal service in October of 2010 and held various positions in the Tampa area and out of state before becoming postmaster of Brandon in late 2023. Gonzalez completed USPS’ Management Essentials for Field Leadership and graduated from the University of North Texas with an advanced degree of M.B.A. in management and a Bachelor of Science in accounting.

As Brandon’s Postmaster, Gonzalez oversees over 100 employees, 40,500 deliveries and two retail units.

“Never serving in the military, I take great pride in serving the American public as a civilian federal employee. With 14 years of postal experience, I believe that being able to lead by example produces responsible, engaged employees who contribute to the organization with extraordinary commitment and efort,” said Gonzalez.

CENTRAL HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY CHAMBER HOSTS 30TH ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT

The Central Hillsborough County Chamber of Commerce is hosting its 30th annual golf tournament to support the chamber.

“It is one of the largest and most anticipated events the Chamber hosts with the goal of providing networking opportunities, promoting members and local businesses and raising funds for the chamber’s initiatives and community projects,” chamber branding and marketing director Teri Perkins.

The tournament also allows professionals and community members to form relationships and strengthen ties in the community.

“It is a full-day event that includes the Midway of Vendors, the Bryan Hindman Electric Ball Drop, a silent auction presented by Socially Funded, a host of rafe baskets and ending with a delicious dinner provided by the venue,” Perkins said.

The annual golf tournament will take place on Saturday, May 18, beginning at 12 Noon. Golfers can walk through the midway of over 20 vendors, such as Gasparilla Pizza and Growlers, for food samples and other items until 1:30 p.m.

The chamber of commerce will also host the Bryan Hindman Electric Ball Drop. Attendees can purchase golf balls ahead of

the event, which will be dropped on the course. The winner is determined by whose ball drops closest to the hole, winning 60 percent of the funds raised. In previous years, winners have taken home over $1,000.

The shotgun start will take place at 1:30 p.m. and golfers will play until dinner. Perkins said she hopes to host 128 golfers, or 32 teams of four.

Fourteen chamber members will serve on the Golf Tournament Committee, dedicating their time and resources to ensure the event goes well. During the event, around 20 Junior Reserve Ofcers’ Training Corps student volunteers will assist. Chamber staf, ambassadors and other member volunteers will also support the event.

People can also purchase sponsorships, donate swag items or provide rafe baskets for the events.

NEW HORIZONS GROUP HOMES 25TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

In 1992, several parents, teachers and friends of members of the Special Ministries Department of First Baptist Church Brandon identified a need for long-term living facilities for developmentally disabled men and women. A committee was formed to investigate the requirements to undertake this task.

Out of this group, New Horizons Group Homes was born.

New Horizons Group Homes has been part of the Brandon community for 25 years. It will be hosting an anniversary celebration on Saturday, May 25, at Brandon Elks Lodge #2383 from 5-9 p.m. Tickets for the celebration are $40 and can be purchased at the New Horizons o f ce or from any board member. The deadline for purchasing tickets is Friday, May 17. “We will have dinner and dancing,” said Brenda Watkins of New Horizons Group Homes. “We will have a 50/50 drawing and door prizes.”

“We currently have openings for three men,” Watkins said. “Our homes are based on Christian principles and have a family atmosphere where our residents are encouraged to reach their full potential. They have gained a wonderful sense of independence while having 24/7 supervision. Some of our residents work in the community, while the others go to di f erent day programs.”

Smedley explained, “Glover will speak about photography and art, how to use the phone camera to get quality prints and how your image can translate into a painting.”

CUTTING-EDGE DOD LAB AIMED AT PROVIDING MILITARY SOLUTIONS

The University of South Florida (USF) recently opened a cutting-edge lab aimed at providing quick, innovative solutions to the diferent challenges facing the U.S. Department of Defense. Managed by USF’s Institute of Applied Engineering (IAE), the new Rapid Experimentation Lab (REL) provides a unique, collaborative space to rapidly test concepts.

Te University of South Florida recently had a ribbon-cutting for a state-of-the-art facility that is part of a fve-year, $85 million contract with the Department of Defense.

As one of nation’s most research-intensive universities, USF is helping to solve problems throughout society, and the facility is a key part of those eforts.

“Our new lab will further enhance the University of South Florida’s focus on developing technologies and providing innovative solutions that address critical global and national security challenges,” USF President Rhea Law said. “This facility will provide research opportunities for our faculty, handson learning experiences for our students and help grow important partnerships with governmental agencies and private industry.”

The state-of-the-art facility, part of a five-year, $85 million contract with the Department of Defense, is poised to reshape the engineering landscape in Tampa Bay. It aims to streamline the prototyping process by bringing together engineers from a wide range of disciplines under one roof, significantly reducing development timelines.

“The lab provides the necessary infrastructure, tools and collaborative environment to enable the curious and inspired to design, build and test technologies for today

and tomorrow,” said Peter Jorgensen, associate director of engineering for the IAE. “More than just a makerspace, the REL is a playground for mechanical, electronics, sensors, communications and software teams to quickly iterate on designs to solve problems, invent new products and rapidly deliver cutting-edge capabilities.”

The new 8,000-square-foot facility will be utilized not just by USF faculty and student engineers but also partners in the Department of Defense and private industry, who are working to support missions everywhere, including the battlefield, the oceans and space.

The lab houses various equipment, including electrical and mechanical computer design and analysis tools, communications networks to support testing, electronics and circuit boards as well as manufacturing technology. It will allow multiple engineers to collaborate, test and retest an idea or product before presenting it to the Department of Defense for consideration.

The IAE also plans to work with the USF Technology Transfer Ofce to identify startup companies interested in utilizing the lab for development of their own inventions.

STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL SEES STEER SALE SUCCESS AND MORE

That would come as a result of the Mosaic Youth Steer Sale, held on March 9 at the Patterson Co. Livestock Arena in the Charlie Grimes Family Agricultural Center, located at the Florida Strawberry Festival Fairgrounds in Plant City.

In support of their future projects and activities, and for their hard work raising, training and showing steer, this year’s youth contenders reportedly raised more than $1.4 million.

Given the exact number reported, not counting 21 cents, that translates into 1,436,107 nods of approval for local youth, which in turn sets a steer sale record, according to festival ofcials.

In the arena three days earlier, the grand champion and reserve grand champion were named, giving Kiah Swilley, a member of the Durant High School FFA chapter, and Bella Ballard, a member of the Youth Leaders in Production Agriculture Chapter, nights to remember for a lifetime. Ballard exhibited what was to become the overall grand champion steer, while Swilley showed the overall reserve grand champion steer.

According to fair ofcials, the grand champion buyers were Enhanced Healthcare LLC, Drop the Walls Boutique and

Westcoast Enterprises. MNM Construction was the reserve grand champion buyer. In reporting that 115 youth steer exhibitors earned more than $1 million, festival ofcials in a Facebook post told the buyers, “We are overwhelmed with gratitude for your support of these outstanding young people.”

Overall, the 89th Florida Strawberry Festival ended its 11-day run on March 10 with attendance clocking in at 634,779 attendees. As Kyle Robinson, festival president, put it, “this year’s festival was an incredible success.”

Featuring in the mix of expected festival attractions, including local entertainment, school exhibits and blue-ribbon arts and crafts standouts, this year’s festival marked the 50th year volunteers from St. Clement manned the Plant City Roman Catholic church’s “make your own strawberry shortcake” booth.

“Our objective when we started in 1974 was to buy property and pay of the mortgage,” said Kevin McFaul, a church member for some 35 years, who said last year’s eforts reduced the mortgage by about $500,000.

This year’s St. Clement booth, one of three to ofer strawberry shortcake at the annual event, reported sales of 79,618 shortcakes, McFaul said.

“We have a saying in our parish,” he added. “Our church is built on a foundation of God, but paid for with strawberries.”

NxTGeN Futbol, in collaboration with Country Day Montessori Schools, kicked of a new indoor futsal facility at 1202 Bloomingdale Ave. over spring break. Futsal is a soccer-based game played indoors on a hard court, similar to a basketball court, and is played between two teams of five players each, one of whom is the goalkeeper. Unlimited substitutions are permitted. NxTGeN Futbol uses turf and padded walls to avoid injuries to players.

EARLY INTERVENTION FOR BABIES DEVELOPMENT AND FEDERAL HELP

Every baby develops at their own pace. But sometimes developmental delays happen; it could be caused by a condition or a developmental concern. When a baby has a developmental delay, it’s important to get help early. However, it’s difcult to know where to turn for help, and help can be expensive. Early Steps is an early intervention program that is federally and state funded, that ofers free help to caregivers of children from birth to 36 months of age.

Dr. Emily Shaffer-Hudkins, Bay Area Early Steps director, stated of the program, “Early Steps is meant to empower caregivers and parents. It is an educational model and is meant to teach families in the home or classroom how to build on and help your baby to continue developing and hit his or her milestones.”

There are 15 Early Steps programs in Florida. However, the University of South Florida’s Bay Area Early Steps manages both Hillsborough and Polk counties. Early Steps has a variety of services and interventions that can help with a baby’s needs, such as: in-home therapies (speech, occupational or physical therapy), assistive technology and hearing and vision services.

Next, an Early Steps affiliate will call the parent/caregiver to conduct an intake phone call, decide on a family-based support plan as well as discuss an in-person or telehealth evaluation of the baby. If it is determined during the evaluation that there is a developmental delay and the baby needs some help from Early Steps, the coordinator will find and organize coverage of appropriate help for that child. Income is not a factor for eligibility.

The program empowers parents with the knowledge and tools of how to work with their children during daily routines to accomplish their goals. ECHO LOOKS TO THE COMMUNITY FOR VOLUNTEERS FOR STAMP OUT HUNGER

National Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive Day is observed on the second Saturday of May and will be held on May 11 this year. It is the largest food drive in the country and takes place in more than 10,000 cities and towns.

National Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive Day is conducted by the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC). The drive was started in October 1991 as a trial program and took place across 10 cities in the United States. It was highly successful and has continued every year since.

ECHO of Brandon has been a recipient of Stamp Out Hunger for many years, and the local nonproft is looking for volunteers for this event on Saturday, May 11.

The initiative was formed by a union wanting to give back to those in need, whether it be by donating funds to a charity, collaborating during times of disaster or protecting victims of calamities and crimes.

The date for the drive was later moved to the second Saturday of May. The NALC decided that the best time of year for the food drive would be in the late spring. This was because food banks and pantries ran out of food by May, as donations decreased after Thanksgiving and Christmas.

year-round,” said ECHO’s director of emergency services, Savanna Thompson. “Last year, the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive collected more than 65,000 pounds of food donated to ECHO to support families in crisis.”

It was the postmen who mostly saw the obstacles that communities faced. On May 11, the postal carriers both deliver mail and collect food donations. As they deliver orders, bills and postcards, people get to help out by filling their mailbags with nonperishable food donations.

“We need more than 600 volunteers that day to make it happen,” Thompson said. “If you can’t volunteer donate, you will get a bag in your mailbox in the first week of May. Fill the bag with new, nonperishable food and put it out at your mailbox for your mail carrier to pick up on May 11.”

Thompson and the team at ECHO hope members of the community will volunteer for this fun event.

“We hope to have a fun day working hard to help those in need,” Thompson said. “Joining together with USPS to make this happen each year is one of the highlights of my year. We live in an amazing community that all comes together so well to help feed the hungry in our community.”

Center Place Fine Arts and Civic Association is now the new home of Marrow Pro Wrestling.

“We are excited to bring Marrow Pro Wrestling to Center Place,” said Center Place’s executive director, Libby Hopkins. “We are always looking for new and exciting opportunities to bring to Center Place, and Marrow Pro Wrestling is definitely new and exciting.”

Marrow Pro Wrestling will be making its debut at Center Place on Saturday, May 11, at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15.

Marrow Pro Wrestling is managed by promoter, wrestler and Riverview resident Ashley Hartley.

“My love of wrestling started with my dad,” Hartley said. “Over the last 28 years, he has instilled the love of the sport in me. The first thing he taught me was about gigging and taking chair shots and giving chair shots. It has progressed from there and now my 3-year-old son loves wrestling. He calls it ‘boom’ and thinking he can do all the moves.”

Marrow Pro Wrestling was started by Hartley because there are no female promoters in the wrestling industry.

“It’s very rare to find women in a promoter position,” Hartley said. “I wanted to make the men in this business realize that women can do this too. We are just as good, if not

better. It’s important to guard this like my baby and put out a fresh product with the matches.”

Hartley’s father, Byron Bruch, started wrestling in 1985.

“When I started wrestling, there were no women wrestlers,” Bruch said. “Ashley came to me when she was 17 years old when she came to me and said she wanted to get into wrestling. I was concerned when she wanted to do this, but now I have full confidence in her wrestling and promoting.”

It truly is a family affair. Bruch runs the concessions at the wrestling matches while Hartley promotes the events and wrestles as well.

Marrow Pro Wrestling chose Center Place Fine Arts and Civic Association because Hartley loved the venue.

“It was important to me to find a venue that’s indoors,” Hartley said. “I also wanted a venue that the fans would enjoy coming to for a wrestling match. Center Place is an absolutely beautiful building and I loved it when I first came to see it.”

Amy Sams, principal of Southshore Charter Academy, has entered the Honorary Riverview Mayor’s race and is planning to put the ‘FUN’ in fundraising for her charities. This race is a long-standing tradition that benefits local nonprofit organizations as well as brings the community together through hosting family-friendly events. During the month of April, each candidate chooses two charities for which they will host multiple fundraising events. The candidate who raises the most donations is named Honorary Mayor of Riverview. The event is sponsored by the Riverview Woman’s Club.

Sams’ inaugural run for Honorary Riverview Mayor was an easy choice. She hopes that it will raise much-needed funds for ECHO and believes the mayoral race is a great way to increase the connection between Southshore Charter Academy and the community.

Sams’ announcement on her mayoral Facebook page shows her enthusiasm for this race.

“With great excitement, I am proud to officially announce that I am running for Honorary Mayor of Riverview,” said Sams. “This is not a typical mayor’s race as there are no politics involved nor will the winner hold an ofce. Instead, this race is all about the community and charity.”

“We have been partnering with ECHO for several years now for our annual canned food drive,” said Sams. “We see all of the great work they do to support our neighbors, and their success reports of helping families find jobs, housing and vehicles is so encouraging. They have even been supportive to a few of our own families that we have sent their way. ECHO does so much for our neighbors to provide food, clothing and support to find jobs and housing.”

Sams is hoping that her mayoral race will also raise the $10,000 needed to purchase and install bulletproof film for the windows and doors at Southshore Charter Academy.

“Southshore Charter, like all schools, is always striving to strengthen students’ learning by improving safety and security,” said Sams. “All funds raised will go toward those eforts.”

Southshore Charter Academy, located at 11667 Big Bend Rd. in Riverview, is a tuition-free public charter school educating students in grades K-8.

In a time-honored tradition, the Honorary Riverview Mayor’s race is sponsored by the Riverview Woman’s Club and is of to a to an incredible start. Although there is no ‘political’ afliation with this race, the candidates use this forum to raise money for charities close to their hearts.

This year, Shannon Keil, president and CEO of The Regent, has thrown her hat in the ring. Keil resides in Riverview with her husband of 24 years, John, along with their children, Shawn, Kaleigh and Taylor; son-inlaw, Jaime; and grandchildren, Dominic and Alivia. Keil will be raising money for two charities: Mary & Martha House and Black Dagger Military Hunt Club.

Mary & Martha House has helped hundreds of abuse victims escape domestic violence. This charity holds a special place for Keil. Laurie Herring, executive director of Mary & Martha House, passed away in September 2021. Herring and Keil were best friends, so raising money for this charity was certainly a priority for Keil.

“My heart and passion for Laurie, my best friend who passed away three years ago, would push me through the busy season I am in to be successful,” said Keil. “Laurie’s birthday is April 12, and what better way to celebrate her birthday than to raise money for her passion driver, domestic abuse prevention and the Mary & Martha House?”

“They support veterans as they come through the process of reacclimating back to life and assure that Gold Star families are recognized and lifted out of their grief,” said Keil. “They create events and experiences for the veterans and their families here in our community and the surrounding Tampa Bay area that encourage them to come out and experience life again.”

There will be fundraisers, online auctions and events as well as opportunities to support Keil’s race. On Sunday, April 7, from 5-8 p.m. at The Regent, there will be a hand tools and handbags bingo event to raise money for Keil’s charities.

USF is the first university in Florida and among the first in the nation to announce plans to create a college dedicated to AI and cybersecurity.

The vision for the college would be to offer undergraduate and graduate programs aligned with USF’s strategic plan and the state’s Programs of Strategic Emphasis to prepare students for high-demand careers, empower faculty to conduct innovative research that leads to new discoveries or technological advancements, grow industry partnerships and promote ethical considerations and trust throughout the digital transformation underway in society. Research shows that there has been a five-fold increase in the demand for AI skills with jobs in the U.S., while more than 40 percent of organizations experiencing a shortage of cybersecurity professionals say they are unable to find enough qualified talent.

The creation of a new college would leverage USF’s existing strengths and partnerships in AI, cybersecurity and computing, as well as its location in the Tampa Bay region, a hub for technology and defense industries. At USF, there are approximately 200 faculty members currently engaged in

research in related disciplines, which are seeing significant growth in funding awards.

“As AI and cybersecurity quickly evolve, the demand for professionals skilled in these areas continues to grow, along with the need for more research to better understand how to utilize powerful new technologies in ways that improve our society,” USF President Rhea Law said. “Through the expertise of our faculty and our strong partnerships with the business community, the University of South Florida is strategically positioned to be a global leader in these fields.”

The formation of a new college is subject to continued consultation with faculty through shared governance processes and approval from the USF Board of Trustees. In recent months, an internal task force has been evaluating USF’s faculty strengths and exploring opportunities to enhance multidisciplinary collaboration that will help advance USF’s academic and research excellence in AI, cybersecurity and computing.

Holy Elbow Jabs

While working on a new devotional, I struggled to think of an everyday miracle I hadn’t yet used in a reading, a story of God’s faithfulness that fit the (small) word count and made my point. It just wasn’t happening.

Then I felt it. That Holy Spirit elbow jab to my ribcage that means the Almighty is trying to tell me something. But you know, I’m sort of dense. Sometimes it takes more than one jarring jab.

With the first nudge, I felt a ridiculous urge to go into my bedroom. I ignored it. How could that help?

A half-hour later, I stood staring at my bedside table. There was that holy jab again. What in the world?

I opened the drawer. Jab. It was full of junk, books and old papers I hadn’t seen for ages. Was I supposed to clean out a dresser during this crucial writing time? Papa God sure has a weird sense of humor.

I couldn’t figure it out. But I couldn’t walk away either. One tiny pink booklet caught my eye. Cute. I had no memory of it whatsoever.

I opened the cover and gasped. My own handwriting boldly proclaimed across the top of the first page, “God’s Miracles in My Life.” And then at the bottom of that same page, “So I’ll NEVER doubt!” Contained inside were pages of grace notes beginning in April 1990.

Good heavens. Over 30 years of miracles right there at my fingertips. Talk about a direct answer to prayer.

Then as I thumbed through story after story of God working in my life, I shed a few tears. Not just because I had hot proof that He’s been there all along, orchestrating miracles, but also because that little book in my hands was afrmation that He’s genuinely interested in every detail of our lives.

That He heard my pleas, saw my conundrum and responded. That He overtly worked behind the scenes just to prove, well, that He’s always working behind the scenes.

“The Lord will always lead you. He will meet the needs of your soul in the dry times and give strength to your body,” (Isaiah 58:11).

WISDOM, HUMILITY, KINDNESS AND GOODNESS

One of my favorite scenarios involves Rebekah and I together, camped out at the kitchen table one at each end, sipping fresh ground cofee, both working on a writing project — creative juices flowing.

Outside it is raining. Has been all day. But rainy weather is good writing weather, good for ruminating; I like that word.

‘Ruminate’ (a verb, pronounced / ru m ne t/): to think carefully and deeply about something.

“Thinking carefully and deeply.” Oh, yes! America could use a little more ruminating right about now. Ruminating and then its natural companions: self-appraisal, self-questioning and a humble heart. Oh, we love to question other people, especially folk we don’t like or disagree with. But how about turning our questions inward? How about keeping the following questions front and center?

• We are all likely wrong at least half the time, so what can we learn from people we disagree with?

• What should we maybe think through more on our own, rather than blithely swallowing whole and without question?

• Isn’t it time to invest more thought outside our ‘only people who think just like us’ silo? It’s not very healthy in there. Anyway, back at my end of the table I am finishing up a blog post about ‘wis-

dom’ before writing an article about ‘humility’ for our church webpage. It occurs to me that the two words are related. At Rebekah’s end of the table, she is putting together Sunday’s sermon. This week, the key words are ‘kindness’ and ‘goodness.’ Turns out we are very much on the same page. Here is what I am thinking. I’m thinking the New Testament book of James nailed it: “Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.”

The scriptures suggest — no, teach — that we should all work at replacing our dark, angry, negative, hostile ways with more kindness and goodness — along with some humility too.

NUNSENSE TO BE PERFORMED BY PLANT CITY ENTERTAINMENT

Plant City Entertainment (PCE), an all-volunteer community theater in Plant City, will present Nunsense during this month. Nunsense is directed by Jonathan Douglas and has a great cast and crew.

There is a little twist to the Plant City Entertainment production. Douglas explained, “Did I say the nuns are played by male actors? Let the fun begin. Think of it as Mrs. Doubtfire enters the convent.”

Douglas, a longtime actor and director, said, “I have been a member at PCE for over 25 years. I am a member of the

FIVE NEW CHIMPANZEES SWING INTO SPRING AT BUSCH GARDENS TAMPA BAY

On March 8, Busch Gardens Tampa Bay welcomed five new chimpanzees to its existing troop of two, creating the largest troop in Central Florida. The new troop is made up of three males and two females ranging in age from 9-28. They will enjoy a half-acre habitat filled with climbing structures, hammocks and multiple elevations while giving guests full viewing access through various windows into the exhibit.

Several times each day, guests can see Busch Gardens’ keepers working with the new troop in training sessions. These sessions stimulate the chimpanzees mentally while allowing keepers to get to know each animal individually and build their bond. This also helps to prepare the chimpanzees for routine wellness exams.

Chimpanzees are omnivorous frugivores — that means they love to dine on fruits, roots, nuts, leaves, plants, flowers, insects and some meats. At Busch Gardens Tampa Bay, the Nutrition Center prepares over 100 pounds of produce for the troop every day, measuring, hand-cutting and assembling meals customized to each chimpanzee’s specific diet. The keepers make sure that each chimpanzee is presented with the correct meal and provide them with nutritional snacks and browse for them to forage throughout the day.

There will be around 25 students to each teacher. There will also be a variety of crafts for students, including creating banners to represent their values.

“Campers will learn the importance of teamwork and sportsmanship as they work together towards common goals and cheer each other on,” Spano said.

The Musical Theatre Camp encourages students to learn stage character and development, work with a set, act, collaborate and build confidence.

The Music and More Camp costs $230 per week and the Musical Theatre Camp costs $275 per week. There is a $30 onetime registration fee for both camps and a $25 sibling discount. Scholarships and multicamp discounts are also available.

In 1952, Reed Fischbach’s grandparents founded a sleepaway camp called Circle F Dude Ranch Camp in Lake Wales. The camp has been operating since its founding but not always with Fischbach’s family at the helm. The camp was sold in 1999.

If you are looking for a traditional sleepaway camp for your child this summer, consider Circle F Dude Ranch in Lake Wales. Te camp has a long history where lifelong friendships are made.

Now, however, a longheld dream has come true. Fischbach and his sister, Dr. Keely Fischbach, bought back the family camp in February.

Fischbach said, “When I was a freshman in college, I learned that the camp had been sold. It was always on my mind, and it actually pushed me into real estate. It was always a goal to buy it back, and when the opportunity presented itself, my sister and I bought it.”

Fischbach added, “It still does not feel real. It is very special that we will be able to carry on the family legacy.”

While the ownership and operation of the camp may have been out of the hands of Fischbach’s family, it did continue to not only operate but also improve over the years.

directors who work full time year-round. They have 20 to 25 years of experience in running a safe operation.”

Circle F Dude Ranch sits on 500 acres complete with a lake big enough to swim, sail and canoe on it. Circle F Dude Ranch is a traditional sleepaway camp for girls and boys ages 6-16 that is rooted in a classic dude ranch experience.

When asked what this means, Fischbach responded, “The property is a ranch. Western focus is on the hospitality that is shown to the campers and their families. The campers are family.”

It has 44 kid-friendly horses. However, no experience with horses is necessary, and each camper decides how much they want to interact with the horses. ZOOTAMPA UNVEILS NEW AUSTRALIA REALM, STINGRAY SHORES AND WALKING TRAIL LOOP

ZooTampa at Lowry Park has been busy continuing its Year of More with the addition of a new marked walking trail, Stingray Shores and the expansion based of Australia.

The Zoo and the Muma Children’s Hospital at Tampa General Hospital (TGH) teamed up to provide guests of all ages with a walking trail highlighting the best views within the Zoo during their fitness journey. The Zoo’s walking trail is a 1-mile loop situated among nature that connects guests with animal habitats and includes signs every 1/8th mile that help guests follow their progress and stay on track.

Lowry Park’s Stingray Shores is a new interactive habitat that gives guests a chance to touch, feed and even get in the water with the stingrays. The state-of-the-art habitat is home to two species of stingrays, cownose and southern, and features a 30,000-gallon saltwater naturalistic pool that that is low enough for young children to peer and reach into the water yet provide ‘rest zones’ for the animals if they choose to take a break.

Stingray Shores also aims to educate guests on environmental conservation. The area has interpretative signage that provide guests with additional information about helping this important species and ways they can safely share the gulf waters with

the ‘angels of the sea.’

The new habitat was made possible through a gift from Kate Tiedemann and Ellen Cotton. The Stingray Signature Encounter is sponsored by the Tampa Bay Rays.

These future doctors will learn how to use a stethoscope, blood pressure cuf and reflex hammer. They will practice administering first aid, learn how pharmacists play a role in administering medications and create models of parts of the body to learn how they work.”

TAMPA BAY COMMUNITY WATER WISE AWARDS PROGRAM

The Tampa Bay Community Water Wise Awards, sponsored by Tampa Bay Water, UF/IFAS Extension and Florida-Friendly Landscaping™, were created to recognize individuals and businesses committed to conserving our water resources, protecting the environment by using Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ (FFL) principles and including an attractive design. There are nine FFL principles, which include: right plant, right place; water efciently; fertilize appropriately; mulch; attract wildlife; manage yard pests responsibly; recycle; reduce stormwater runof; and protect the waterfront. Many of these principles are used as part of the landscape evaluation process for this awards program.

The University of Florida/Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ teams in Hillsborough, Pasco and Pinellas counties and their county/city water departments evaluate your county’s landscapes using specific criteria, which includes the following and more:

• Landscape Design and Plant Selection: Organic/plant-based mulch is applied 2-3 inches deep throughout the plant beds. Plants with similar maintenance and water requirements are grouped together, no strips of grass less than 4 feet wide.

• Stormwater Runof Prevention: The use of rain collection devices, gutter downspouts and roof runof is directed onto mulched/planted areas, not bare areas in the lawn/landscape which are subject to erosion.

• Efcient irrigation: The landscape exists primarily on rainfall or is watered only as needed with an irrigation system.

Complete your application now, which will take about five to 10 minutes, then submit online at the link above. Attaching a photo or two is helpful. Winning entries will receive a beautiful, handmade mosaic steppingstone for homeowners or a plaque option for businesses. Feedback is provided to all that enter the awards program.
