Slow start costs Golden Eagles in loss to defending National Champion Bears

Lady Techsters hold ORU scoreless in final 2:32, score winning basket with :12 remaining

WACO, Texas - Oral Roberts University fought hard but suffered a loss on Wednesday night as they were topped by No. 3/3 Baylor, 94-56, in front of 7,767 fans at the Ferrell Center. With the loss, ORU falls to 3-4.

RUSTON, La. - Louisiana Tech’s Whitney Frazier hit a game-winning field goal with :12 left, leading the Lady Techsters to a 61-59 victory over Oral Roberts University. ORU (3-5) had an opportunity to win the game at the buzzer, but Taylor Cooper’s last-second three-pointer was off the mark and the Golden Eagles lost for the fifth time in six games.

Senior Kevi Luper led the Golden Eagles with 19 points, while freshman Taylor Cooper caught fire from threepoint range and added 16. Sarah Shelton held her own on the low block, finishing with 11 points and a teamhigh seven rebounds.

Kevi Luper led the Golden Eagles with 18 points, while Bernadett Balla came off the bench to score 16. Frazier led all players with 21 points.

The defending NCAA Division I National Champions, Baylor (8-1) flexed their muscles on Wednesday night. The Bears shot 56.3% from the floor and outrebounded the Golden Eagles, 44-29.

The Golden Eagles got off to a great start, building an early double-digit lead. A Sarah Shelton layup at the 14:43 mark gave Misti Cussen’s club a 14-4 advantage.

Odyssey Sims led the Bears with 27 points, while reigning consensus national player of the year Brittney Griner tallied 22 points and 10 rebounds. The home team sprinted out to a sizable lead, going up 31-9 at the 12:12 mark. But ORU spent the rest of the half whittling the lead down. A late three-pointer by Cooper capped a 12-5 ORU run and cut the gap to 48-34.

A 19-point night from Kevi Luper was the high point in a 94-56 loss to defending National Champion Baylor

Baylor led at the half, 51-34. Cooper led the Golden Eagles with 13 points at the break.

But the momentum did not last, as Louisiana Tech responded to the ten-point deficit by launching a 32-10 run. A basket by Janay Borum gave the home team a 3624 lead with 6:37 left in the half.

Bernadett Balla came off the bench to score 16 points, nearly leading ORU to a comeback win over Louisiana Tech

The Techsters took advantage of an 8-0 run early in the second half, with a Frazier layup stretching the lead to 50-41 with 14:44 on the clock. But ORU would not go away, methodically getting back into the game. They finally retook the lead with 4:13 left on the clock, when Cooper hit a baseline runner to make the score 57-56.

ORU came out of the locker room hot, scoring the first four points of the half. A layup by Shelton off of a feed from Luper cut Baylor’s advantage to 51-38 with 18:54 to play. But the Bears answered with a 9-2 run, putting the game out of reach. Two Jordan Madden free throws at the 16:39 mark restored the 20-point lead, at 60-40.

ORU tallied points for the final time with 2:32 left in the game, as Shelton scored off of a Jaci Bigham feed to give ORU a 60-59 lead. Neither team scored on their next three possessions, setting up a closing sequence that would cost the Golden Eagles.

Later Sims put the finishing touches on a 12-0 Baylor run, scoring in transition to boost the lead to 78-47 with 11:18 to play.

ORU’s final shot attempt, a three-pointer by Cooper from the left wing, did not fall and Louisiana Tech left the arena with a two-point win. Official Basketball Box Score -- Game Totals -- Final Statistics Oral Roberts vs Louisiana Tech 12/14/12 7:00 p.m. at Ruston, La. (Thomas Assembly Center)
