BROADWAY SEASON SPONSORED BY

JANUARY 2-7 • ORPHEUM ORPHEUM-MEMPHIS.COM

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT & CEO Welcome to this performance of what I call a ‘rocket ship musical’, SIX. Why do I call this a rocket ship musical? Because of how fast it went from concept to Broadway! Many shows can take years to make it to Broadway. The currently running Broadway musical by Barry Manilow, Harmony, is a great example – that show, in which the Orpheum Theatre Group is an investor, took more than twenty years from concept to Broadway.

SIX took just four years. That alone is unheard of, but… What makes it even more incredible is that it was written by a Cambridge University senior, Toby Marlow, in 2016 with the goal to premiere it at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2017. Marlow enlisted another student, Lucy Moss, to assist him in the script.

SIX did, in fact, premiere in 2017 at Edinburgh, produced by the Cambridge University Musical Theatre Society. One year from concept to stage! That is extraordinary, but… It then toured the U.K. in 2018, opened on the West End (London’s version of Broadway) and played a few cities in the U.S. in 2019, finally opening on Broadway in February of 2020 — just in time to be shut down by the COVID pandemic. Undeterred, it reopened on Broadway in October, 2021. Today, there are productions of SIX on Norwegian Cruise Lines and in Australia, South Korea, Canada, Hungary, and Poland. Meanwhile the West End and Broadway runs continue, as well a United Kingdom tour. There are currently two companies touring the United States, one of which you are watching this evening. Whew, that is truly a rocket ship musical! In fairness, SIX did have good source material in the lives of the wives of Henry VIII. Their stories are timeless and fascinating. The retelling of this history in musical theatre form demonstrates how wonderful it is to see stories come alive on stage. I believe there is no better way to tell, or receive, a story than in the theatre. SIX proves that belief beyond any doubt. Welcome to this rocket ship musical. I am glad you are here to climb aboard and take off with this show. The ride is terrific, so hang on tight!

GUEST ETIQUETTE

As a courtesy to the performers and patrons, latecomers will be seated at an appropriate break in the performance. No text messaging, photography, or recording. The light from your phone is a distraction to those seated around and above you. Do not talk or whisper during the performance. Be conscientious about the noise you make. You may be distracting or disturbing the patrons around you and the actors on stage. Certain productions may not be suitable for all ages. We recommend taking the time to determine which shows are appropriate for your children. Visit Orpheum-Memphis.com or call (901) 525-3000 if you have any questions. Firearms, knives, or weapons of any kind are prohibited inside the theatre. Help us keep our venues secure — if you see anything suspicious, please tell an usher or other Orpheum Theatre Group representative.
