“Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.” – W.B .Yeates For the past decade OROT has been able to kindle and nurture the flame of a Jewish day school education for children of diverse learning needs thanks to supporters like tonight’s honorees, Arden and Ira Saligman. Through their generosity, the OROT program can continue its work at Perelman Jewish Day School, Politz Hebrew Academy, and Torah Academy. The Saligman’s, as well as all of our supporters, host school administrators, and mainstream teachers, have come to understand that you can light a fire under every child but cannot use the same match! With the use of specialized strategies and techniques the OROT teachers enable diverse learners to receive a quality Judaic and general studies education in the warm and loving day school environment. On behalf of the OROT program we thank the Saligmans for their support, and pay tribute to them for helping to strengthen special needs education in Philadelphia’s Jewish day schools. OROT is thrilled to honor Arden and Ira Saligman at our 2010 annual event. The Saligman’s are wonderful people and outstanding members of the Jewish Community, with involvement in numerous organizations. Arden is a Penn graduate and has been involved in Maternity Care Coalition, the Shipley School, the Benchmark School and Radnor Elementary Parent/Teacher Organization. She has raised funds for the Museum of Natural History as well as the University of Pennsylvania. Ira is a graduate of George Washington University, Emory University and served in the United States Navy. He is a member of the Jewish Federation Real Estate Board, the Jewish Federation Housing Board, JEVS Human Services, he is Chair of the Federation Investment Committee as well as a Cub Scout Troop Treasurer and Den Leader. The Saligman’s live in St. David’s with their three children, Van, Lila and Gill. OROT is very fortunate to have their support and we are very grateful for the opportunity to recognize them as this year's honorees.

Words can’t express the feelings Arden and I have to be honored by OROT. OROT is a program whose mission sounds so simple and obvious, but takes unbelievable effort and planning to execute. The program is truly special because it provides children with learning differences the opportunity to attend and participate in a traditional Jewish day school. If not for OROT the options for these wonderful kids would be limited to a full time special needs program or a potential miserable and damaging traditional educational experience. OROT not only benefits the children who need more specialized educational programs but it gives the rest of the student body a chance to learn and grow by being with OROT students. Our world is large and diverse, and having special needs is another dimension of diversity. We would like to acknowledge and thank the people who make OROT possible. The efforts of the staff are truly exceptional. Every child in the program has different needs for which a curriculum must be designed, monitored and adjusted throughout the year. The staff and teachers’ dedication ensures the students do not fall through the cracks. Arden & Ira Saligman
