How to Take a Rubbing


Taking A Rubbing • White paper with black wax block (or large crayon) best choice • Thick paper like grocery sacks are too thick to get a proper rub • Butcher paper with wax side works well with moist stones • Please avoid using pencil, chalk or anything that could rub off



Lay your paper over the entire memorial.


Begin by marking all four edges.


Rub every area where a design or text appears.



Indicate on the rubbing which areas are polished (P) and which areas are sanded (S).


For shape-carved designs, we need a rubbing and a good close-up photograph of design to be shaped.
