SEASON PREVIEW

It didn’t take long for head coach Paul Westhead to implement his new uptempo style of play with the Oregon Ducks. Hired in March 2009, Westhead was given the opportunity and the task of turning around a program that had finished the season 9-21, while averaging a program-low 56.6 points per game. The only coach in history to win a championship in both the NBA and WNBA, Westhead made it clear this year’s version of the Ducks would operate his well-known run-and-gun style that was made famous during his five-year stint with the Loyola Marymount men’s program. While this may be Westhead’s first attempt at coaching a women’s program in the college ranks, he showed obvious success translating the fastbreak offense from the men’s game to the women’s game while winning a 2007 WNBA championship with the Phoenix Mercury. Running his powerful offense, the Mercury averaged 89.0 points per game and won a franchise record 23 games en route to its first title. The Ducks schedule is good to them early on as Oregon will play eight of its first nine games at home. Oregon will also have familiar opponents from a year ago in Montana, Portland, Georgia Tech, Wyoming and Utah. The Ducks first test will come at Big Sky champion Montana on Nov.22, and later that month when hosting the World Vision Invitational which includes 2009 WNIT participants Wisconsin and Portland State.

Oregon’s fitness will be assessed when the team hosts three games in a five-day span with Portland, Boise State and Long Beach State coming to McArthur Court. But undeniably the program’s biggest test of the season will be ending its non-conference season with three road games at Georgia Tech, Wyoming and Utah. Last season, the Ducks were 1-2 against those clubs at Mac Court, and Georgia Tech and Utah look poised to make postseason NCAA Tournament runs once again. Pac-10 Conference action begins with Washington on New Year’s Day. It will mark the final time the squads will play one another at historic Mac Court, as Oregon looks to make the transition to Matthew Knight Arena for conference play in one year’s time. While Oregon’s transition from one building to another will be of historic significance, the student-athletes will be focusing on their transition on the basketball court. The Ducks have 10 returners on the roster – all of whom are new to Weshtead’s speedy offensive attack. The good news is that with those 10 returners, including four starters, returns 84 percent of Oregon’s scoring and 83 percent of the Ducks’ rebounding from a year ago.

GUARDS Oregon’s experience rests with its guards as seniors Micaela

Cocks and Taylor Lilley take the floor for their final collegiate seasons, respectively. The duo will be asked to spearhead Westhead’s up-tempo philosophy as Oregon is eager to return to postseason play for the first time since Cocks’ and Lilley’s freshman campaigns. Similar to last season, when Cocks and Lilley are on the floor, they are interchangeable at both guard positions as both have an eye for the open pass and the knack to knock down an outside jumper. If any player is ready for the physical devotion it takes to run the fastbreak offense, it’s Cocks. She is returning to the floor after putting together her best season yet as a junior. The New Zealand native led the Pac-10 averaging 2.3 three-pointers per game, and was named Pac-10 Third Team after averaging 13.5 points per game to lead the Ducks. She was the only Oregon player to start all 30 games, averaging an astonishing 36.9 minutes per contest. A now-healthy Lilley should also help this guard combination excel this year. As Lilley battled both shin pain and concussions during her junior season, she still managed to play in 22 games, average 10.0 points per game, and lead the Ducks with 70 assists. Known for her sharp-shooting, Lilley also has the capability to run the point and make the critical final pass. She is currently knocking on the door of setting a new Oregon all-time threepoint field goal record. With 146 three-pointers in her career,

17 OREGON WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

SEASON PREVIEW she needs to sink 44 this year to become the Ducks’ all-time leader. “Taylor and Micaela are the leaders of this team,” Westhead said. “Taylor has the ability to hit a shot from almost anywhere on the floor, and this system should really benefit her. Micaela, also a tremendous shooter, has really embraced the system and has been a fabulous director of the attack.” A piece of the puzzle that was desperately missing from Oregon’s backcourt a year ago returns to the floor to play in a system that seems like it was made for her. Sophomore redshirt guard Nia Jackson is closing in on 100-percent health after recovering from a torn left ACL suffered in September 2008. Jackson will return to the floor with some much-needed speed, quickness and an instinct for the fastbreak system Westhead has installed. As a freshman, Jackson ignited interest coming off the bench as a spark plug offensively and a pest on the defensive end, but injuries derailed her rookie season. The Seattle native looks to be completely healthy for the first time since December 2007, and could possibly turn what was a dominating duo into a potent trio. “Nia can really help us this season,” Westhead said. “She is quick down the court, can hit the open jumper and her penetration can create some open shots for her teammates. Right now we just need to focus on her conditioning and getting 100 percent healthy, but I am happy with her progression over the last few months.” Oregon will also look to add two newcomers to the backcourt in juniors Candyce Flynn and Kristi Fallin. Flynn, capable of handling point guard duties, comes to UO from Rend Lake College in Ina, Ill. The Cleveland, Ohio native received all-region and all-conference honors after averaging 14.3 points, 5.1 assists and 2.8 rebounds per game. “Candyce is doing well learning her point guard duties and the speed game,” Westhead said. “This system is different than anything she has experienced before.” With Cocks and Lilley roaming the three-point line, Oregon brought in one more sharp-shooter to spread the floor. A State Farm All-American finalist out of Umpqua Community College, Fallin led the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges averaging 23.0 points per game and was named the NWAACC Southern Region Player of the Year. She left the Riverhawks as the program’s all-time three-point leader, knocking down 208 in just two seasons. “Like we anticipated, Kristi continues to impress us with her three-point shot,” Westhead said. “She will have the opportunity to impact some games this season.” WINGS Upperclassmen Lindsey Saffold, Victoria Kenyon and Tatianna Thomas will help Oregon on the wing. Saffold, voted by her teammates as the 2008-09 Defensive Player of the Year, returns for her senior season. An athletic presence on the floor, Saffold led the Ducks with 16 blocks while averaging 3.6 points and 3.2 rebounds per game. “Lindesy’s athleticism can really help us on the break,” Westhead said. “Whether it’s getting to a defensive rebound or breaking down the floor for an open look on the wing, she will have chances this season to provide some support.” Thomas initially saw her role increase with the squad a year ago. Now a junior, Thomas will look to return to her early-season form of 2008-09. Through the first seven games of her sophomore campaign, Thomas averaged 4.6 points, 2.9 assists and 2.9 rebounds per game.

First year head coach Paul Westhead has implemented his fastbreak and uptempo offense during the offseason. The system promises to bring an exciting brand of basketball to McArthur Court and women’s basketball’s loyal fans.

Many of Thomas’ early assists came through feeding Oregon’s post players, a skill that should prove useful in the fastbreak offense. “Tatianna’s athleticism and ability to drive to the basket suits our system,” Westhead said. “I expect Tatianna to contribute this season on both ends of the floor.” Also entering her third season is junior Victoria Kenyon. Another Duck which saw her playing time slowly decrease after the season’s first eight games, Kenyon was averaging 4.0 points and 2.8 rebounds per game early on. The native of Australia has played several different positions in her first two years, and this season should find a role as a trailing forward in the new offense, setting up open shots for Kenyon’s accuracy. “Victoria’s shooting ability can really compliment the new offense,” Westhead said. “She can shoot from almost anywhere on the floor, and as a trailing post that will create opportunities.” Sophomore Jasmin Holliday was one of two freshmen a year ago to make a significant impact for Oregon. The Chino Hills, Calif., native was a Pac-10 All-Freshman Honorable Mention selection, and was voted by her teammates as the season’s most improved player. During her rookie year, Holliday showed explosive athleticism, leading the team in scoring on

18 OREGON WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

SEASON PREVIEW four occasions and reaching double figures seven times. She even increased her scoring in conference play, averaging 6.8 points and 3.9 rebounds per game while shooting 51.0 percent from the floor in the Pac-10. “Jasmin has been slowed in fall workouts and practice by a hamstring injury,” Westhead explained. “But we expect that once she is fully healthy, Jasmin will play an important role this season. If she can run the floor with us, Jasmin should create a lot of opportunities for our team.” An unexpected newcomer to join the team is freshman Laura Stanulis. A four-sport athlete out of Sunset HS in Portland, Ore., Stanulis earned a spot on the roster during walk-on tryouts. A two-time all-Metro league selection in high school, Stanulis has played all over the floor for Oregon in early practices and has shown the ability to knock down the open jumper. “Laura was very much a pleasant surprise,” Westhead said. “She has proven she definitely belongs.” Somewhat of an unknown commodity is freshman Aliyah Green. The rookie is still recovering from a right ACL injury suffered during her senior season at Jefferson High School in Portland. Green continues her strength and conditioning regimen as she builds toward returning to the court for live action sometime this year.

“We are waiting for Aliyah to get to full strength so we can get her on the court and see what she might bring to the table,” Westhead said. POSTS The biggest change on the floor might come for Oreogn’s post players: sophomore Amanda Johnson, and juniors Nicole Canepa and Ellyce Ironmonger. For Johnson, a Pac-10 All-Freshman Honorable Mention a year ago, the system may give her different opportunities. Johnson averaged 7.9 points per game last year, while also leading the Ducks in rebounds (163) and steals (42). She was the first freshman to lead UO in both categories in 20 years. Known for her hard work on the court, Johnson will have the ability to get down the floor, but also should have the chance to grab defensive rebounds and spring the initial attack with her confidence to move the ball to open teammates. “Amanda is an intelligent basketball player, and that should help us with decision making when we are running the break,” Westhead said. “She has the ability to get down the floor and find an open spot, or spur our attack with her rebounding abilities.”

after rebounds, the task will heavily fall on UO’s veteran posts. Canepa averaged 4.2 rebounds per game as a freshman, but an injury-plagued sophomore season cut that number nearly in half. Healthy and in the best shape of her collegiate career, Canepa has the opportunity to use her post skills in the fastbreak system as the lead or trailing forward. “Nicole has worked very hard in the offseason to get in shape for the fastbreak system,” Westhead said. “Her skills will come in handy under the basket for rebounds as well, and if we don’t score early in the attack, Nicole is someone we can go to in the post.” Ironmonger has started just 17 games during her two years with the Ducks. The native of Australia has a bit of a different skill set then Canepa, possessing the ability to shoot from the perimeter and giving the Ducks another option as the trailing forward in the fastbreak system. “Ellyce’s catch-and-shoot abilities will really be put to good use in the fastbreak offense,” Westhead said. “A post that can stop at the perimeter on the break and nail an open jumper is just another weapon that should help us this year.”

The same can be said for Canepa and Ironmonger. And while it will be the responsibility of all the players on the floor to go
