PK PARK

2014 OREGON BASEBALL

PK PARK

PK Park opened on Feb. 27, 2009 to a soldout crowd and a thrilling 1-0 victory over the 2008 defending College World Series champion Fresno State Bulldogs.

Creating one of the most ADA compliant stadiums in the country, the park is fully accessible with ramps and seating at both the concourse and field level.

PK Park embodies the excitement and ambition of the Ducks’ newlyresurrected baseball program.

The park has specially designed lighting structures. From the ground level, it is 47 feet 10 inches to the top of the facility, enhancing the intimacy for the Oregon baseball team and spectators.

Fans won’t have to miss a single pitch at PK Park, which is designed around a single, open concourse that provides incredible views to the entire playing field. Continuing the tradition of the University’s top-quality athletic facilities, designers also incorporated festival areas between PK Park and Autzen Stadium, offering fans a place to gather and celebrate the Ducks’ success. PK Park is equipped with a full home locker room and players’ lounge, as well as a state-of-the-art video board. A newly designed press box features four radio/television broadcast booths, an audio/visual game operations booth, and a large press area. There are also eight fully-loaded luxury suites with indoor and outdoor seating.

Eugene architect firm Cameron, McCarthy, Gilbert & Scheibe was the lead landscape architectural firm on the first phase of construction, with Larry Gilbert leading the project. FieldTurf The field will be made of an all-weather base-ball specific FieldTurf, with clay mounds and bullpens. FieldTurf is the leading provider of collegiate baseball synthetic turf and has been installing similar products at college ballparks around the country. Play Development Area (PDA) Opened in January 2013, the indoor PDA features four full batting cages that can be separated into eight cages. The facility cages are also retractable allowing infield to be taken inside the PDA.

JAQUA CENTER

2014 OREGON BASEBALL

The John E. Jaqua Center for Student Athletes at the University of Oregon explores the limits of transparency and connectivity to provide the UO’s student-athletes a place to gather as a community focused on study and learning. The challenge of creating a tranquil environment where students feel connected to natural landscape elements and daylight was heightened by the chosen location: a busy intersection between campus and the city of Eugene, on the site of a former parking lot at one of the major campus entrances. PROGRAM This new 40,000sq state-of-the-art academic learning center accommodates the NCAA-mandated academic services for the tutoring of 520 student athletes. It contributes to the retention and success of these athletes as well as the recruitment of new athletes. The first floor of the building is open to the public with a café, auditorium, and atrium for public events and heritage space that recognizes past, present and future student athletes at the University. The first floor also includes staff offices and shared tutor areas for student-athlete/general student body group sessions. The two floors above are for the exclusive use of Oregon’s studentathletes and staff and require secure access. The facility includes a 114-seat auditorium, 35 tutor rooms, 25 faculty/advising offices, conference room, flexible classroom, computer lab with 54 computer stations, graphics lab, 3 8

www.GoDucks.com

teaching labs, library, separate lounges for students, tutors and staff, and 40 study carrels configured to accommodate two student-athletes per carrel, enough for all freshmen. DONOR The facility is the result of a generous gift from Phil and Penny Knight to encourage academic achievement along with athletic performance. The building is named after John E. Jaqua, who was a varsity athlete at Pomona College, war hero, adored father/grandfather and longtime supporter of the University of Oregon. Jaqua’s legacy is meant to awaken every generation to look itself in the eye and be the best it can be, and his namesake represents a challenge to student-athletes to fulfill their promise. Donor recognition in the facility is subtly treated, as names are etched into glass on an entry wall panel. DESIGN CONCEPT Authenticity to the University of Oregon student experience was a key design driver. As is the celebration of the success of student-athletes in the pursuit of knowledge and athletic achievement, an atrium forms the “heart” of the building. The atrium walls are infused with graphic displays that relay the heritage of athletics at the University. It also includes a scoreboard-inspired wall listing upcoming tutorial appointments.

JAQUA CENTER

JOHN E. JAQUA ACADEMIC CENTER Through the seamless integration of art, environmental graphics and architecture, the facility serves as a pantheon of student athletic achievements. For example, the “A Few Who Just Did It” wall celebrates the post-graduate academic achievements of notable former student-athletes, including the faces of author Ken Kesey, Nike co-founder Phil Knight and Ann Bancroft (the first woman to cross both the North and South Poles), engraved in 8x8 square oak blocks. Other elements include floor engravings of Academic All-American honorees, a color and sandblasted glass wall celebrating Pac-12 All Academic recipients and stair well that contains the names of more than 4,000 lettermen that graduated from the University between 1945 and 2009. Directly off the entrance to the atrium is the café, which features a four-sided gas fireplace, surrounded by a leather lounge seat suggesting the shape of the

University’s signature “O.” On the far side of the atrium is the auditorium/lecture hall which contains 114 leather chairs, in Oregon’s signature yellow, each individually wired for power and Internet capabilities. A student lounge area on the second floor is set on axis with the katsura maple tree in the garden below. This axial move was carefully planned in order to provide a sense of being at the tree top while in the space. Several ‘beanbag-like’ sofas are arranged throughout the room offering student respite. A custom rug covers the floor with a large supergraphic of a traditional University slogan used as part of its rivalry with the Oregon State Beavers, “When ducks fly beavers….” The image across the rug depicts several ducks flying through the air as a beaver scurries away on the ground. Walls are covered in white oak and a TV is placed within a band of black glass that makes a graphic ‘stripe’ along one edge of the room.

STEVE STOLP

Steve Stolp is the Executive Director for Services for Student-Athletes at the John E. Jaqua Learning Center. Stolp advises Baseball, and Men’s Basketball in addition to directing the unit and its programs. He has a PhD in Education from UO. Advising Services In addition to helping students with class scheduling and degree choices, advisors encourage and mentor student-athletes throughout their college experience. It is SSA’s philosophy to foster an honest and open learning environment in which students learn to become more self-reliant. Tutorial Program Tutoring is available for all student-athletes. SSA tutors are hand picked and trained to work with student-athletes. Appointments are available during evening and day times to accomodate student-athletes’ busy schedules. Study Table Program Study tables are available during normal operating hours, evenings and Sundays. All students have access to quiet study tables and computer workstations. Students with laptops can connect to the campus network through wireless access points. Under Prepared and At-Risk Services SSA’s team of learning specialists provide high level support for at-risk students and students with learning disabilities. Learning specialists also coordinate incoming academic screening as well as LD testing and accommodations with the Office of Disability Services. Math and Science Lab The Math and Science Lab is open Monday through Friday, 10am to 2pm, for drop-in help with math and science courses of all levels. Computer Services SSA houses several student computer labs with full access to productivity software, Internet and printing services. In addition, the graphics lab provides services for drawing, image editing, scanning and color printing. The IT Consultant is available to support students with problems on their personal computers or general computer questions.

PAC-12 CONFERENCE

2014 OREGON BASEBALL

conference of champions

The Pac-12 Conference truly is the “Conference of Champions,” as it owns 28 baseball national championships since 1947, more than any other conference. The Pac-12 also claims 37 first-team All-Americans over the past 31 seasons (Baseball America), 11 national coaches of the year (NCBWA, Baseball America and Sporting News) and 15 national players of the year (Baseball America, Baseball Coaches’ Association and Sporting News).

The powerful and prestigious Pac-12 Conference has historically dominated college baseball. There has been a Pac-12 representative in all but four (1996, 1991, 1989, 1962) NCAA College World Series fields since the championship began in 1947. In 37 of those championships, a Pac-12 team has finished either first or second. USC has more NCAA titles than any other school in the nation with 12 and Arizona State is fourth with five. Four other Pac-12 schools have claimed at least two national titles, including Arizona (four), California (two), Oregon State (two) and Stanford (two). In 2013, UCLA became the seventh different Pac-12 team to earn a title as they captured the CWS National Championship for the first time in program history. USC is second only to Texas in College World Series wins with 74 to the Longhorns’ 82. The Trojans have 21 appearances, placing behind Texas (34) and Miami (23), and tying with Arizona State. The Pac-12 has also placed 187 players on the All-College World Series teams over the 45 seasons in which it has had a participant, including 22 MVPs, more than any other conference.

finished second (its third national championship game in four years). In 2004, Arizona advanced to the CWS for the first time since 1986. Arizona State made its 19th trip to Omaha in 2005, while Oregon State returned to college baseball’s biggest stage for the first time since 1952. In 2006, the Beavers returned to the College World Series for the second-consecutive year, where they won their first national title, Oregon State’s second NCAA title in school history. The following season in 2007, OSU returned to the CWS as an at-large bid and did the unthinkable as it captured its second-consecutive national title, becoming the first team seeded in the lower half of the NCAA Tournament field to win the CWS in the 20 year-history of the event. In 2008, Stanford made its way back to the CWS after a four-year absence. The Cardinal went 2-2 in its 16th CWS and finished in a tie for third place. In 2009, Arizona State advanced to the CWS for the 21st time in program history and went on to finish in third place. In 2010, both Arizona State and UCLA represented the then-Pac-10 in the CWS, with the Bruins making their first appearance in the finals. In 2011, Cal made a magical run to the CWS just nine months after the school announced the program would be cut for monetary reasons. The Golden Bears finished in a tie for fifth place in the program’s first CWS appearance since 1992. In 2012, Arizona went 10-0 in postseason play to capture the national championship for the fourth time in school history. Last year, UCLA became the second-consecutive Pac-12 team to earn the national title, also going 10-0 in postseason play. The Pac-12 has now won four of the last eight College World Series National Championships, further solidifying the rich history of excellence in Pac-12 Baseball.

Some of Major League Baseball’s most prominent players have passed through this Conference. Big leaguers who got their starts in the Pac-12 include: Barry Bonds (ARIZONA STATE) – Major League Baseball’s only seven-time MVP and all-time home run record holder; Randy Johnson (USC) - four-time Cy Young Award winner and 2001 World Series co-MVP; Dustin Pedroia (ARIZONA STATE/Boston Red Sox) - 2007 AL Rookie of the Year and 2008 AL MVP; Tim Lincecum (WASHINGTON/San Francisco Giants) - 2008 and 2009 NL Cy Young Award winner; Barry Zito (USC/San Francisco Giants) - 2002 American League Cy Young Award winner; Jeff Kent (CALIFORNIA) - 2000 National League MVP; Troy Glaus (UCLA/Atlanta Braves) - 2000 American League home run leader; Aaron Boone (USC) – son of Bob Boone and a third-generation major-leaguer; Mark Prior (USC/San Diego Padres); Paul Lo Duca (ARIZONA STATE/Florida Marlins); Xavier Nady (CALIFORNIA); Trevor Hoffman (ARIZONA); and Mark Hendrickson (WASHINGTON STATE/ Baltimore Orioles). Players such as these have left their marks on the Pac-12, helping to sustain the nation’s marquee baseball Conference. Through the years, the Pac-12 has also spawned some of the best to ever coach the game. Rod Dedeaux’s tenure at USC (1943-45, 1951-86) – in which his Trojans claimed 11 NCAA titles – stands as one of the greatest coaching accomplishments to date. Former Sun Devil skippers Bobby Winkles (1959-71) and Jim Brock (1972-94) brought three and two national crowns to Arizona State, respectively. Former Arizona coach Jerry Kindall (1973-96) won three championships with the Wildcats, and current coaches Mark Marquess (Stanford) and Pat Casey (Oregon State) currently own a pair of NCAA titles. USC was also honored by Baseball America in its Feb. 1, 1999 issue, in which it named the Trojan program as the top collegiate baseball program of the 20th century. In recent years, Pac-12 baseball has continued to enjoy much success on the national level. In 1993 and 1994, Arizona State made back-to-back trips to the CWS, the only Pac12 team to do so in the 90’s. Five Southern Division squads ventured to NCAA regionals, with Stanford and UCLA making it all the way to the CWS in 1996. In 1998, four schools made it to the NCAA regionals, while USC and ASU advanced to the CWS and the Trojans won their 12th title. Quack Cave

CUTTING EDGE SOCIAL MEDIA COMMAND CENTER Launched in August, the Quack Cave, powered by Postano™, is the innovative social media visualization platform. The Quack Cave enables its student volunteers to review, moderate and share the 150,000+ posts generated by fans every football game. This has allowed the school to facilitate increased social sharing and national buzz around the Duck brand. While the Quack Cave has initially been focused on supporting football, it is expected that the command center will expand within its role as the hub of Oregon social media engagement. “The Quack Cave has delivered on each and every one of our objectives, and the technologies that we have invested in, such as Postano™, have enabled our student volunteers to fully leverage the content and energy being created by Duck Fans nationwide, and facilitate increased interaction within the community. We look forward to utilizing the Quack Cave’s proven capabilities to further enhance and support all of the school’s athletic endeavors going forward,” said Craig Pintens, Senior Associate Athletic Director for the University of Oregon Athletic Department.
