A Return to the Podium The Men of Oregon continued their resurgence nationally by earning a trophy at the NCAA Outdoor Championships for the first time in three years. The Ducks were buoyed by middle distance national championships from Elijah Greer and Mac Fleet, but also showed a wide range of depth by scoring in the 10,000 meters, 110 meter hurdles, hammer, javelin and the 4x400 meter relay. Greer had one of the most impressive seasons in school history. He became the first Duck to win NCAA 800 meter titles both indoors and outdoors in the same year. In February, he timed the second-fastest indoor 800 in school history, 1:46.73, before going on to take the NCAA indoor title in 1:47.13. That helped Oregon place sixth overall. Outdoors, Greer did not lose an 800 final outdoors during the collegiate season. He won his second straight Pac-12 800 meter title by more than a second, running 1:49.48. He then closed out his collegiate career in impressive fashion, claiming his first NCAA outdoor crown in 1:46.58. He went on to finish fourth in the 800 at the U.S. Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Elijah Greer
Fleet, running outdoors for the first time since 2010, completed his remarkable comeback from foot injuries with a surprising NCAA title at 1,500 meters. He got the season off to a slow start, but did qualify for the NCAA Indoor meet in the mile. Outdoors, his year began to heat up during the championship season. After taking third in the 1,500 at the Pac-12 Championships, he found another gear at the NCAA meet. He impressed by running 3:41.21 in the semifinals, before outkicking the field in a sluggish final to win in 3:50.25. Following the collegiate season, he was the top collegian in the 1,500 at the U.S. Track & Field Championships, and then wen on to run a personal best 3:38.35 (No. 8 in school history) at the Harry Jerome Classic in Vancouver, B.C., in July. Johnathan Cabral, Sam Crouser, Dakotah Keys, Greg Skipper and Parker Stinson were also consistent performers for the Ducks in 2013. Crouser was the Pac-12 champion in the javelin (249-4) and finished third at the NCAA meet. Keys had one of the Ducks’ more impressive performances of the year at the Pac-12 meet, where he won the decathlon by just three points. He also went over 8,000 points - 8,001 - for the first time in his career in winning the 2013 league crown. Skipper, just a freshman, was another Duck who successfully overcame an injury the previous season. He was the Pac-12 runner-up in the hammer (222-6, No. 4 in school history), before taking fourth at the NCAA Championships (219-11).

Cabral proved exceptionally reliable in the hurdles in 2013. Indoors, he won the MPSF 60 meter title (7.77) and finished sixth at the NCAA Indoor meet (7.73, which was the second-fastest in school history). Outdoors, Cabral played a vital role in the Oregon’s Pac-12 title as he was the runner-up in both the 110 (13.52) and 400 meter hurdles (50.50). His 400 hurdle time was the sixth best in school history. Cabral went on to place fifth in the 110 hurdles at the NCAA Championship (13.41). Cabral also ran the nation’s fastest time in the 110 meter hurdles, a wind-aided mark of 13.33 at the Stanford Invitational. Stinson was another important key to the Pac-12 win as the runner-up in the 10,000 meters (28:56.20). He was sixth in that event at the NCAA meet (29:46.45). Earlier in the year at Stanford, Stinson ran a personal best 28:34.71, No. 7 on the UO career list. One of the Ducks’ most memorable performances came in the final event of the Pac-12 meet, where the Men of Oregon captured their first conference title in the 4x400 meter relay since 1934. The team of Kevin Anding, Arthur Delaney, Jack Galpin and Mike Berry won in 3:05.63. That squad would go on to finish third at the NCAA Championships in 3:03.61, No. 4 in school history. Oregon’s diversity was its most dominating factor in winning its seventh straight league crown. Trevor Ferguson epitomized that depth by finishing second in the long jump (24-6.25) and third in the 110 hurdles (14.37). The Ducks also saw a runner-up finish from Berry in the 400, and counted a third place showing from Ethan Powell in the javelin. Others who impressed as first time scorers at the conference level were freshman Matthew Melancon in the 10,000 meters (fourth), Anding in the 400 (fifth), senior Tyler Pinkney in the triple jump (sixth) and senior Miles Walk in the hammer (seventh).

Program of the Year With national titles in cross country and indoor track and field and a third-place finish at the outdoor meet, Oregon was named the national Terry Crawford Program of the Year for the fifth year in a row. The Ducks’ impressive run of national and conference domination continued with electrifying performances in 2013. After winning the 2012 national title in cross country for the first time in 25 years, the Ducks continued their mastery of the NCAA Indoor Championships by claiming their fourth crown in a row. Unlike years past, the Ducks did not have an individual event winner, instead relying on great depth across the track. After winning their fifth straight Pac-12 title, the Ducks then wrapped up the season in impressive fashion by finishing in the top three at the NCAA Championships for an unprecedented fifth consecutive season. The collection of talent for Oregon in 2013 was one of its greatest in recent memory with veterans like English Gardner, Jordan Hasay, Phyllis Francis, Laura Roesler, Becca Friday and Anne Kesselring joining with newcomers Jenna Prandini, Elizabeth Brenner, Jillian Weir and Alexi Pappas, among others.

Gardner was simply awesome in the sprints. She opened 2013 with a runner-up finish in the 60 meters at the NCAA Indoor meet (7.15). Outdoors, she won her second consecutive NCAA 100 meter title in a school and Pac-12 record 10.96. That came after she was disqualified from the event at the Pac-12 meet for a false start. Not to be discouraged, Gardner came back with a vengeance in the 200 meters, taking the league crown in a school-record 22.62. Gardner turned pro after the collegiate season and won the U.S. title in the 100 meters in a personal best 10.85. Hasay finished her brilliant Oregon career with a school record 18 All-America awards. She set UO records in the 10,000 meters (32:06.64), indoor 3,000 (8:57.46) and indoor 5,000 (15:40.30) during the year. The 10,000 time was also a Pac-12 record. She was the NCAA indoor runner-up in the 3,000 meters (9:06.61), was fourth in the indoor 5,000 (15:40.30) and third in the outdoor 5,000 (15:50.78). Kesselring and Friday also wrapped up stellar careers by helping the Ducks win their fifth straight Pac-12 title. Kesselring placed third in both the 800 (2:07.54) and 1,500 (4:15.14) at the league meet, while Friday was the runner-up in the 1,500 (4:14.99). Indoors, both women scored on the distance medley relay, while Friday took sixth in the mile (4:39.23).

Roesler and Francis brought home Pac-12 titles for the Ducks and also factored prominently at the NCAA meets. Roesler won the Pac-12 800 title in 2:06.51 and had a pair of national runner-up finishes. She was second indoors in a school record 2:02.32, and second outdoors in 2:00.98. Roelser was also the top collegian in the 800 at the U.S. Championships in June, timing a personal best 2:00.23 (No. 3 in school history). Francis led the nation in the 400 meters for much of the outdoor season. She opened the year with a fourth place finish at the NCAA Indoor meet in 52.01 (No. 2 in school history) before winning the Pac-12 400 crown in 51.57. That set the stage for her personal best 50.86 run (No. 2 in school history) in a third place showing at the NCAA outdoor meet. Newcomers were very much a factor for the Ducks as well. Prandini was the surprise Pac-12 champion in the 100 meters, timing 11.46, and placed second in the 200 (22.77). She was seventh in the 100 at the NCAA Outdoor meet (11.43) and fifth indoors in the 60 meters (7.38). Pappas, a transfer from Dartmouth, played a key role in the indoor national crown by taking sixth in the 5,000 (15:47.13) and eighth in the 3,000 (9:12.38). Brenner became a rare two-sport All-American by taking eighth in the javelin at the NCAA meet (168-9) after placing third at the conference meet (150-0). Weir was one of the most improved throwers on the team as a sophomore and was fourth in the hammer at the Pac-12 meet (212-3). Oregon’s relays were also impressive in 2013. Oregon’s only win at the NCAA Indoor Championships came in the 4x400 relay, where Gardner, Chizoba Okodogbe, Roesler and Francis won in a school record 3:30.22. At the outdoor meet, the Ducks were fourth in 3:28.24. The 4x100 squad (Francis, Gardner, Prandini, Okodogbe) won the Pac-12 title in a meet record 43.81 and then was fourth the NCAA meet in 43.80. Other performances that stood out from Oregon’s fifth straight Pac-12 title included Okodogbe in the 400 (second), Alyssa Monteverde in the 100 hurdles (fourth), Anne Leblanc in the 800 (fifth), Megan Patrignelli in the steeplechase (fifth), Lauren Crockett in the high jump (fourth), Chancey Summers in the high jump (fifth), Sammie Clark in the pole vault (fifth) and Annie Whitfield in the javelin (sixth).
