Game #2 • Sept. 6 44 10

OREGON UTAH STATE

Eugene, Ore. (58,778) Autzen Stadium 67 degrees, mostly sunny

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Already down a quarterback, No. 21 Oregon’s depth got tested in its opener against Washington on Saturday night. Justin Roper, named the starter one week prior to the season opener after Nate Costa was injured and had season-ending surgery, went down with a concussion early in the Ducks’ 44-10 victory against the Huskies. That had Oregon turning to junior college transfer Jeremiah Masoli, who threw for 126 yards and two touchdowns to finish off the win. “It took a series or two,” Masoli said. “The first series I had a couple overthrown balls and you know, some miscues with the receivers, but a couple series is all it took to get back on our feet.” Roper completed 7 of 11 passes for 114 yards, a touchdown and an interception before he left in the second quarter. His only previous start came in last season’s Sun Bowl, when he threw four touchdown passes in a 56-21 victory over South Florida. Roper was pressed into service last year when Dennis Dixon and Brady Leaf went down with injuries late in the season. Oregon’s defense held the Huskies to under 100 rushing yards for the third straight game in Autzen Stadium before putting game away with 23 unanswered points in the fourth quarter. Freshman Chris Harper followed Masoli on Oregon’s depth chart, and came in for a handful of snaps in the second half. He scored on a 2-yard keeper with 46 seconds left in the game. “We weren’t planning on playing Masoli as much as we did, but we did have a plan to play Chris Harper,” Bellotti said. “I’m proud of them. They weren’t perfect, but they made things happen.” Senior running back Jeremiah Johnson eclipsed the 100-yard rushing plateau for the first time in his collegiate career in only his second starting assignment. “We were just trying to mix it up and give them a different look,” Masoli said. “When Roper went down, we weren’t sure what we were going to do.” Washington’s dual-threat quarterback, Jake Locker, completed 12 of 28 passes for 103 yards and ran for 57 yards. Eugene, Ore. (58,060) Autzen Stadium 71 degrees, sunny

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Justin Roper returned from a concussion and helped No. 18 Oregon to a school-record 688 total yards in a 66-24 rout of Utah State on Saturday. LeGarrette Blount ran for 132 yards and two touchdowns for the Ducks, taking on the bulk of the rushing duties after Jeremiah Johnson left with a shoulder injury on the Ducks’ first series of the game. Injuries forced the Ducks to take a look at their untested quarterbacks last week. The easy victory over the Aggies gave the team some leeway to experiment with them on Saturday. Roper, who left the game early in last week’s victory over Washington and didn’t practice with the team until Wednesday, started and completed 13 of 18 passes for 173 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for a score. The Ducks (2-0) used backup Jeremiah Masoli, a junior college transfer, in the second quarter. He finished 7-of-11 for 67 yards. Freshman Chris Harper also got some work, completing four of six passes for 40 yards and a touchdown. It was much more relaxed than last Saturday’s 44-10 victory over the Huskies, with Blount and Terence Scott each scoring a pair of touchdowns, as seven different Oregon players reached the end zone. The Ducks yardage surpassed the 667 they gained against Brigham Young in 1989. Utah State (0-2), which opened with a 27-17 loss to UNLV, has won just one of 46 games against a ranked opponent. The Aggies have lost all four of their meetings with the Ducks. Utah State Oregon

West Lafayette, Ind. (54,666) Ross-Ade Stadium 88 degrees, cloudy and windy WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — LaGarrette Blount ran 3 yards for a touchdown in the second overtime to give No. 16 Oregon a come-from-behind 32-26 win. Oregon (3-0) trailed 20-3 early in the second quarter, but tied the game late in the third, before Purdue’s Chris Summers missed a 44-yard field goal at the end of regulation that prevented the upset. Oregon got the ball first in overtime, and quarterback Justin Roper was stopped on a third-and-2 at the Purdue 17. Matt Evensen made a 33-yard field goal to give Oregon its first lead, 26-23. On Purdue’s first play of the first overtime, Curtis Painter threw down the sideline for Greg Orton, and Oregon’s Walter Thurmond was called for pass interference to give Purdue the ball at the Oregon 10. Summers made a 22-yard field goal to force a second overtime. Painter fumbled on the first play of the second overtime, but Justin Pierce recovered for the Boilermakers. Summers was forced into a 47-yard field goal, and he missed wide right to set up Oregon’s winning drive. Adding to the suspense was the Ducks’ starting quarterback injuring his knee on his final carry of the first OT, prompting true freshman Chris Harper into the game to engineer the winning drive. Blount finished with 12 carries for 132 yards and two touchdowns. Kory Sheets ran 29 times for 180 yards and two touchdowns for Purdue (1-1), which lost its 15th consecutive game against a ranked team. Trailing by 14, Oregon got back in the game when Jairus Byrd returned a punt 87 yards to make it 20-13 with 4:41 left in the third quarter. Oregon broke another big play, with Blount rumbling 74 yards up the middle. to get into scoring range. Roper kept on a fourth-and-1 at the Purdue 16 and went 11 yards, and Blount finished the drive with a 5-yard run that tied the score at 20 with 11 seconds left in the third quarter. Summers made a 27-yard field goal to give Purdue a 23-20 lead with 7:30 to play, but Evensen answered with a 38-yarder to tie the score at 23 with 5:06 left. Eugene, Ore. (58,713) Autzen Stadium 60 degrees, mostly sunny

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Kellen Moore threw for 386 yards and three touchdowns in his first road start and Boise State upset No. 17 Oregon 37-32 Saturday as the Ducks’ quarterback troubles continued. Jeremiah Masoli, a junior college transfer who was projected as Oregon’s third-string quarterback going into the season, started but left the game in the first half with a reported concussion. The Broncos (3-0) took advantage of the Ducks’ offensive struggles. Moore, a redshirt freshman, was composed in completing 24 of 36 passes. Vinny Perretta had three catches for 91 yards and a touchdown. Oregon (3-1) planned on using both Masoli and true freshman Chris Harper at quarterback after starter Justin Roper injured his left knee in the Ducks’ 32-26 double-overtime victory at Purdue the previous week. But Masoli and Harper combined to attempt only six passes in the first half as Boise State took a 24-6 lead. Then came more bad news: Masoli did not return after halftime. He appeared on the sidelines wearing his jersey with shorts. Harper’s troubles continued in the second half and Oregon gave freshman Darron Thomas a try. The Ducks had hoped to redshirt him. Thomas led a late charge, completing a trio of touchdown passes in the final 11 minutes, to pull Oregon within five points of the visitors. However it was unable to recover Tim Taylor’s onsides kick as the Broncoes ran out the clock. The Ducks went into the game ranked fourth in the nation in rushing with an average of 323.3 yards per game. They were also ranked fourth in total offense, with an average of more than 562 yards. Pullman, Wash. (33,927) Martin Stadium 77 degrees, sunny

Los Angeles, Calif. (82,765) L.A. Memorial Coliseum 66 degrees, cloudy

PULLMAN, Wash. (AP) — Jeremiah Johnson and LeGarrette Blount each ran for three touchdowns and Oregon thrashed Washington State 63-14 on Saturday in front of the Cougars’ homecoming crowd. Jaison Williams caught two touchdown passes as Oregon (4-1, 2-0 Pac-10) rebounded from last weekend’s loss to Boise State that knocked the Ducks out of the Top 25. Washington State (1-4, 0-2) has lost to all four major college teams it has faced, beating only Portland State of the FCS last weekend. The Cougars managed only 271 yards as they continue to struggle under new coach Paul Wulff. Earlier this season, they lost 66-3 to Cal for the worst margin of defeat in team history. The outcome was somewhat predictable as Oregon came into the game averaging 43 points per game, while WSU’s defense ranked near the bottom of all teams by allowing 39 ppg. Oregon, averaging 300 rushing yards per game, ran for 346 yards and had 507 yards of total offense. Blount had 98 yards on 15 carries while Johnson finished with 89 yards on 10 carries. The Ducks scored on their first three possessions to put the game away early. On the opening possession of the game, WSU quarterback Marshall Lobbestael was stripped of the ball by Brandon Bair and Nick Reed recovered for the Ducks on WSU’s 28. Johnson ran it in from the 7 for a 7-0 lead. On the ensuing kickoff, WSU returner Chris Ivory fumbled and it was recovered on the 22 by Oregon’s Jairus Byrd. Quarterback Jeremiah Masoli fired a strike to Williams in the end zone and Oregon had a 14-0 lead just 3 minutes into the game. Blount ran 13 yards up the middle for a touchdown on the Ducks’ third possession. Oregon Washington State

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Mark Sanchez threw for 332 yards and three touchdowns Saturday night and No. 9 Southern California stormed back from a stunning loss to rout No. 23 Oregon, 44-10. The Trojans (3-1, 1-1 Pac-10) shook off a defeat at Oregon State that knocked them out of the No. 1 ranking, and dominated the Ducks (4-2, 2-1), who had been considered the better of Oregon’s two Pac-10 schools. Sanchez, coming off a so-so performance in the 27-21 loss, completed 19 of 28 and did not throw an interception. He threw to seven different receivers, with Joe McKnight catching five passes for 86 yards, and Patrick Turner grabbing five for 77 yards and a TD. The Trojans also used a committee of five runners, led by C.J. Gable’s 49 yards on 10 carries, and Stafon Johnson’s 43 yards on seven carries. Oregon’s Jeremiah Masoli, pressed into duty by injuries and making his second college start, completed 18-of-29 for 156 yards, with one interception. USC’s defense, which allowed Oregon State’s Jacquizz Rodgers to run for 186 yards and two scores the previous game, held the Ducks’ tandem of Jeremiah Johnson and LaGarrette Blount to a combined 45 yards - all by Johnson. Blount was held to 0 yards on nine carries. Trailing 10-3 midway through the second quarter, USC reeled off 24 points before halftime, then tacked on another touchdown in the opening minutes of the third quarter. Taking advantage of blown coverage by the Oregon secondary in the second quarter, Sanchez connected on scoring passes of 34 yards to a wide-open Damian Williams in the left flat and 63 yards to Ronald Johnson several steps beyond the final defenders. David Buehler’s second field goal of the game, a 36-yarder 40 seconds before halftime, had put the Trojans up 20-10, before an Oregon turnover set up still another USC touchdown before the intermission. OREGON ARIZONA STATE

Eugene, Ore. (58,728) Autzen Stadium 52 degrees, partly cloudy

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Oregon quarterback Jeremiah Masoli ran for 170 yards and a touchdown in the Ducks’ 31-24 victory over UCLA on Saturday night. Masoli, who entered the season as the third-string quarterback, also completed five of 19 passes for 42 yards and a score for

the Ducks (5-2, 3-1 Pacific-10). Kahlil Bell and Derrick Coleman each ran for a touchdown for the Bruins (2-4, 1-2), hit late in the game by a scary injury to receiver Terrence Austin, who had to be carted off the field at Autzen Stadium. Instead, Oregon stayed with Masoli, who had a 5-yard TD run in the first quarter and kept the Bruins’ defense off balance the entire game. In addition to leading a tandem of Oregon’s 100-yard rushers, Masoli came within 3 yards of equalling the school’s most rushing yards ever by a quarterback. But Oregon was generally lackluster until the waning moments of the first half. Matt Evensen missed a 42-yard field goal and had a 50-yarder blocked. The Bruins weren’t any more inspired. The closest they came to scoring early was a missed field goal by Kai Forbath, a 47-yard attempt that went wide left. Bell, who injured his left ankle in the opener and aggravated it last weekend against Washington State, was hit late in the first half and had to be helped off the field. Oregon made it 14-0 with 22 seconds left before the half when Masoli hit Chris Harper—who has played at backup quarterback this season—with a 24yard scoring pass. UCLA scored its first touchdown on the road so far this season on Coleman’s 1-yard run, but Oregon answered with LeGarrette Blount’s 6-yard scoring run to make it 21-7. Oregon cornerback Jairus Byrd was called for pass interference on what had looked like an interception of Craft in the end zone, and Bell subsequently ran 2 yards for the score to make it 21-14. The Ducks finally put the game away on Blount’s second score of the day via a 69-yard run. UCLA Oregon

Tempe, Ariz. (69,406) Sun Devil Stadium 79 degrees, clear TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Jeremiah Johnson and LeGarrette Blount ran for two touchdowns apiece and Oregon routed Arizona State 54-20 Saturday night to remain in a tie for the Pac-10 lead. Quarterback Jeremiah Masoli ran for a touchdown and threw for another for the Ducks. He gained 85 yards in eight carries and completed 17-of-26 for 146 yards. Johnson ran 43 yards for a touchdown on Oregon’s first possession and added a 6-yard TD run early in the third quarter. Blount had a 10-yard scoring run in the second quarter and an improbable 19-yard touchdown run in the third. Blount rolled on top of two would-be Arizona State tacklers on his second score, then got to his feet and scampered to the end zone. Oregon (6-2 overall, 4-1 Pac-10) amassed 537 yards, 304 on the ground. The Sun Devils (2-5, 1-3) lost their fifth in a row. Masoli played the first three quarters, staking the Ducks to a 44-13 lead, before Justin Roper connected with Chris Harper for a 62-yard TD with 5:27 to play. It marked Roper’s first appearance in five games after recovering from a knee injury. The game was barely two minutes old when Oregon took the lead for good. On third-and-2, Johnson burst free over right tackle on a 43-yard touchdown run. The Sun Devils blew an opportunity on Oregon’s next possession, when Masoli and Johnson botched a handoff and Morris Wooten recovered for Arizona State at the Ducks’ 8. But on third-and-goal from the 11, Jarius Byrd intercepted Rudy Carpenter’s pass in the end zone and scrambled out to the 2. Late in the first quarter, Masoli ran 28 yards to the ASU 3, then scored from there on the next play. The Ducks would score two more times before the half to grab a 23-6 advantage, before adding three more TDs in the third period. Oregon Arizona State

Berkeley, Calif. (61,432) Memorial Stadium 61 degrees, heavy rain

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) — Memorial Stadium was a quagmire even before kickoff, and the synthetic turf looked more like a duckfriendly marsh by halftime. Coaches Jeff Tedford and Mike Bellotti both thought it was the worst rain they’d seen in many years. Yet the Golden Bears splashed around in all that water much more adeptly than the 23rd-ranked Ducks, who made enough mistakes to lose their spot atop the Pac-10 standings. Marcus Ezeff recovered Oregon’s fumble on a punt return to set up Shane Vereen’s 2-yard touchdown run with 8:57 to play, and Cal persevered through the rain for a 26-16 victory to set up a showdown with Southern California the next week. Cal (6-2, 4-1 Pac-10) won this lively rivalry game for the fourth time in five meetings despite floundering on offense for most of the final three quarters. Two Ducks turnovers allowed the Bears to make mercifully short scoring drives—about the only kind possible in such awful weather. Cal’s big plays on defense and special teams decided it. Linebacker Worrell Williams returned an interception 50 yards to the Oregon 3 to set up Nyan Boateng’s TD catch 18 seconds before halftime, and Jairus Byrd’s fumble on a fair catch attempt doomed Oregon’s otherwise solid defense again. Throw in a safety on a horrible punt snap, a bobbled extra-point hold and a missed field goal, and the Ducks (6-3, 4-2) knew the blame for this wasted opportunity rested only on their own rain-soaked shoulder pads. Both teams made mistakes caused by the wet balls and slick field. Oregon long snapper Zach Taylor launched a punt snap 38 yards through the back of the end zone for a safety in the first quarter, while Cal’s Nate Longshore fumbled the snap on a field-goal attempt. But Longshore also stepped in for injured Kevin Riley and passed for 136 yards for the Bears, who stayed in the thick of the conference race with their fourth win in their last five games. Riley incurred a concussion on a vicious hit when he failed to slide for a first down late in the first quarter, but the oft-booed Longshore got the home crowd on his side with a steady performance. EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — LeGarrette Blount’s 3-yard touchdown run with six seconds left gave Oregon a 35-28 victory over Stanford on Saturday. Down 28-27 when Stanford scored with 2:18 left, Oregon efficiently drove the field— a series highlighted by quarterback Jeremiah Masoli’s 25-yard carry— and left no time for Stanford to answer after making the two-point conversion. Masoli completed 11 of 21 passes for 144 yards and a touchdown for Oregon (6-4, 5-2 Pac-10), while Blount ran for 90 yards and two scores. Stanford (5-5, 4-3) remained in need of one more victory to become bowl eligible for the first time since 2001. The Cardinal close out with USC at home before visiting California. Cardinal running back Toby Gerhart, who was injured for all but one game last season, is closing in on becoming Stanford’s first 1,000-yard rusher since Tommy Vardell in 1991. But Gerhart injured his upper right hamstring early in the game and finished with eight carries for 21 yards, giving him 931 yards for the season. Tavita Pritchard completed 15 of 22 passes for 138 yards and a TD for Stanford. With conditions alternating from sudden downpours to bursts of brilliant sunshine, Oregon went ahead early on Morgan Flint’s 37-yard field goal and Masoli’s 5-yard touchdown pass to Jeff Maehl. After Stanford’s Aaron Zagory converted a 39-yard field goal attempt to make it 10-3, Jeremiah Johnson ran 41 yards to score for Oregon. Pritchard found Josh Catron with a 5-yard scoring pass to narrow it to 17-10 for Stanford. The Cardinal tied it with a fake field goal, when holder Bo McNally ran eight yards for the score. Oregon pulled ahead before halftime with Flint’s 26-yard field goal. Zagory had a 20-yard field goal to tie it again after the break. But Oregon answered with Blount’s 38-yard touchdown run in pouring rain to take a 27-20 lead. Stanford Oregon

Eugene, Ore. (58,369) Autzen Stadium 52 degrees, overcast

E UGENE, Ore. (AP) — Jeremiah Masoli threw for a career-high 298 yards and accounted for five Oregon touchdowns, leading the Ducks to a 55-45 victory against Arizona. M asoli rushed for three TDs and threw for two more, all in the first half. The Ducks (8-3, 6-2 Pac-10 Conference) then withstood Arizona’s second-half rally from a 48-17 deficit. Oregon’s sophomore quarterback completed 21 of 26 passes, including all 11 of his attempts in the second quarter, against an Arizona (4-2, 6-3) defense that came into the game ranked second in the league in total defense. But it was Oregon running back LeGarrette Blount who sealed the victory with a 40-yard touchdown run with 3:38 to play after the Wildcats had scored 28 straight points to cut the Ducks lead to 48-45. Blount, who tied the school’s single-season record with his 15th touchdown of the season, finished with 75 yards on nine carries. Arizona’s Keola Antolin rushed for 87 yards and four touchdowns and tight end Rob Gronkowski had 12 catches for 143 yards and a touchdown. Willie Tuitama threw for 328 yards and two touchdowns, but also was victimized by a pair of interceptions. The Ducks debuted their new “lights out” all-black uniforms and helmet, and that was the way they performed in the first half. Masoli scored on the third play of the game, running 66 yards on an option-keeper to put Oregon up 7-0 just 42 seconds in. Less than a minute later, Patrick Chung stepped in front of Tuitama’s pass and returned the interception 31 yards for the score. Arizona Oregon

Corvallis, Ore. (46,319) Reser Stadium 62 degrees, sunny

ORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) — Oregon exploded C for a pair of touchdowns in the final minute of the first half while its offense accounted for a school-record 694 yards of total offense to shatter its in-state rival’s Rose Bowl dreams with the Ducks’ first Resar Stadium win in 12 seasons. The Ducks’ 65 points represented their most points ever scored in a Pac-10 game in the highest scoring encounter in the Civil War’s 112-year history. Just as frustrating for the Oregon State faithful was freshman running back sensation Jacquizz Rodgers watching solemnly on the sideline wearing his No. 1 jersey over his street clothes due to a shoulder injury. The No. 19 Ducks (9-3, 7-2) foiled the Beavers and snapped their six-game winning streak as they avenged a Civil War loss last year at Oregon. Big plays proved to be Oregon State’s undoing as they allowed the winners to score three offensive touchdowns of 45 yards or longer, while the defense returned interceptions of 40 and 70 yards for scores. Jeremiah Masoli completed 11 of 17 passes for 274 yards and three touchdowns for the Ducks, who benefitted from a pair of 100-yard rushers for the second game of the year. Jeremiah Johnson ran for 219 yards -- the most ever by one player in the Civil War -- including runs of 83 and 79 yards. LeGarrette Blount countered with 112 yards on the ground and his 16th rushing TD of the year, which established a school single-season pinnacle. Oregon Oregon State

Mike Bellotti with the Holiday Bowl Trophy

HOLIDAY BOWL San Deigo, Calif. (59,106) Qualcomm Stadium 60 degrees, cool and clear SAN DIEGO (AP) — Now this was a Holiday Bowl. Oregon quarterback Jeremiah Masoli ran through and over Oklahoma State’s defense for three touchdowns and threw for another to lead the No. 15 Ducks to a 42-31 win over the No. 13 Cowboys in a wild, record-setting Holiday Bowl on Tuesday night. Masoli, who quickly moved up from No. 3 on the depth chart this season due to injuries, scored on option keepers of 1, 41 and 17 yards in the third quarter, then threw a 20-yard scoring pass to Jaison Williams in the fourth quarter. Masoli ran over OSU free safety Quinton Moore on his 41-yard jaunt. There were big runs, big passes and big hits in a game showcasing two of the nation’s most prolific offenses, both of which feature the spread option led by running QBs. Oregon gained 565 yards and OSU had 469. The Holiday Bowl has a history of wild finishes, and this one had five lead changes in the second half. Oregon’s LeGarrette Blount put an exclamation point on the victory with a 29-yard touchdown run during which he hurdled Moore and stiff-armed cornerback Perrish Cox with 3 minutes to play. Oregon finished 10-3, the fourth time it’s had double-digit wins in Mike Bellotti’s 14 seasons as coach. Oklahoma State finished 9-4 under Mike Gundy, the winning quarterback for Oklahoma State in the 1988 Holiday Bowl. Trailing 17-7 at halftime, Oregon came back on Masoli’s first two scoring runs to go ahead 21-17 by midway through the third quarter. Oklahoma State’s Kendall Hunter answered with his second TD of the game, from 4 yards, before Masoli scored again. The Cowboys took their last lead, 3128, when Robinson scored on a 1-yard run early in the fourth quarter. Masoli’s TD pass to Williams gave the Ducks the lead for good, 35-31. Masoli gained 106 yards on 16 carries. He completed 18 of 32 passes for 258 yards. Oregon’s Jeremiah Johnson ran 12 times for 119 yards, including a 76-yard TD that eclipsed one of Barry Sanders’ Holiday Bowl records. Blount’s 74 yards on seven carries gave him 1,002 yards for the season. He and Johnson became the second duo in school history to each have 1,000 or more yards. Johnson finished with 1,201 yards. Oregon and Oklahoma State each erased records from that Holiday Bowl 20 years ago, when Sanders, the Heisman Trophy winner, ran for 222 yards and five TDs in a 62-14 romp over Wyoming. Johnson’s 76-yard touchdown run in the first quarter eclipsed Sanders’ 67yard TD in 1988 as the longest run from scrimmage in the Holiday Bowl. Johnson took an inside handoff and seemed bottled up, but worked his way to the left sideline, where he picked up three blocks on his way to the end zone. Oklahoma State wide receiver Dez Bryant set Holiday Bowl records with 13 catches for 167 yards, among them a 33-yard TD that gave the Cowboys a 10-0 lead in the first quarter. The 13 catches were a career high for Bryant. The old Holiday Bowl records were 11 catches by BYU’s David Mills in 1984 and Texas’ Roy Williams in 2001, and 163 yards by Oklahoma State’s Hart Lee Dykes in 1988. Oklahoma State quarterback Zac Robinson took a few big hits yet threw for 329 yards, completing 27 of 50 passes, and ran 16 times for 54 yards and a score.

2009-10 PAC-10 Bowl line-up The Pacific-10 Conference has agreements with six bowl partners. The lineup is led by the Rose Bowl, which is the destination for the Pac-10 champion, unless said champion is ranked No. 1 or No. 2 in the final Bowl Championship Series rankings. If that were the case, the Pac-10 champion would play in the BCS National Championship Game in Miami, Fla. Regardless of the disposition of the Pac-10 champion, a second Pac-10 team may be selected for an at-large berth in the Bowl Championship Series in any given year and other Pac-10 bowl partner arrangements provide for that occurrence. In addition to the Rose Bowl, Pac-10 bowl partners include the Pacific Life Holiday Bowl, Brut Sun Bowl, Maaco Las Vegas Bowl, Emerald Bowl and SDCCUPoinsettia Bowl.

ROSE BOWL SELECTION

If a Conference team is ranked No. 1 or No. 2 in the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) ranking system it shall participate in the National Championship Game designated by the BCS. If that is not the case, the following procedures will determine the Pacific-10 Rose Bowl Representative. The Pacific-10 Rose Bowl representative shall be that member’s team with the best won-lost percentage record in Conference games. If, however, the records in Conference games of two or more members are identical, determination of the Rose Bowl representative shall be as follows: A. Two-Team Tie The winner of the game between the two teams shall be the representative. B. Multiple-Team Ties (1) When three or more teams are tied in Conference play, if one has defeated all others, it shall be the Rose Bowl representative. If that is not the case, a comparison of the tied teams’ records against the other tied teams shall be made and the team having the best record against the other tied teams shall be the Rose Bowl representative. If two or more teams are still tied after this comparison, the appropriate two-team or multiple-team tie-breaking procedures shall be repeated among those teams still under consideration. (2) If more than two teams are still tied after the process above is completed, each remaining tied team’s record against the team occupying the highest position in the final regular season standings shall be compared, with the procedure continuing down through the standings until one team gains an advantage. When arriving at another group of tied teams while comparing records, each team’s collective record against the tied teams as a group shall be used. If at any point in the process the multiple-team tie is reduced to two teams, the two-team tie-breaking procedure shall be applied. If more than two teams are still tied after comparing their records all the way through the Conference standings, the team among the tied teams with the highest ranking in the final BCS standings shall be the Rose Bowl representative. If a tie remains, the teams most recently earning Rose Bowl or Bowl Championship Series automatic selection shall be eliminated.
