Jessica Roberts | Corner Lake Middle Jessica Roberts is an Intensive Reading teacher and Media specialist at Corner Lake Middle who enjoys watching a reluctant reader transform into an engaged reader. She instills a love of reading in her students and celebrates their successes by having them experience self-worth and a sense of accomplishment. Roberts wholeheartedly believes that teachers are world changers, especially during this tumultuous time around the globe. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Roberts made weekly home deliveries to middle schoolers who needed materials and textbooks, and laptop assistance. She also dropped off books, paper assignments and rewards to her LaunchED@Home, quarantined and sick students. Her outreach boosted parent and student engagement and grades. Robert’s extra efforts and perseverance paid off by increasing the iReady reading data by 167% during the 2020-21 academic year. Roberts also provided a student’s family with food after she learned that one of the parents could not work after being diagnosed with cancer.
Alexandra Pittman | Innovation Middle Alexandra Pittman is a seventh-grade English Language Arts teacher at Innovation Middle who credits her students for pushing her to become a more effective and passionate educator. For Pittman, creating a classroom culture of mutual respect and learning are the key ingredients for student success. She also believes that teachers raise education to new heights through innovative lessons and are the lifeblood at every school. Designing fun activities and literature discussions for transitioning her ELA pupils from verbal to written reasoning paid off for Pittman’s seventh graders. Her strategy increased student engagement and Florida Standards Assessments reading and writing scores by 25%, and 68% passed their FSA reading with a three or higher. Pittman grew as a teacher leader by getting involved with the National Junior Honor Society and Student Government Association at Innovation Middle. She also established the school’s mascot, Felix the Phoenix, which energized students’ sense of belonging on campus.
Nancy Welch | Orange Technical College - Orlando Campus Practical Nursing Instructor Nancy Welch takes pride in providing students at Orange Technical College with the knowledge and skills to effectively serve the community in health care settings. She leads by example and believes it takes a village when providing patient care, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Welch is committed to assisting students in the classroom and at clinical sites to become compassionate, empathic and professional licensed-practical nurses. She also is an integral part of the pipeline for ensuring that local health care facilities meet the ongoing demand for highly skilled nurses. Her strategies and essential instruction provide future nurses with an understanding of scientific and technical information, and guidance while pursuing excellence in the nursing field. Welch is a leader in the nursing education field. She has had an opportunity to share her expertise during the Orlando Economic Partnership’s Leadership Orlando in 2015 and Florida Future Educators of America Annual State Conference in Orlando in 2020.
Corin Metz | Thornebrooke Elementary Growing up with a learning disability as an OCPS student inspired Corin Metz to become an Exceptional Student Education teacher. Her seventh-grade English Language Arts teacher gave her the confidence to attend college and pursue her dreams. For nearly 25 years, Metz has given back and helped more than 400 students with learning disabilities flourish academically and socially within OCPS. Metz has created a culture of learning in her classroom as an Autism Spectrum Disorder K-2 teacher at Thornebrooke Elementary. Her classroom is an ASD model within OCPS and has been visited by Icelandic educators and the UCF Center for Autism and Related Disabilities program. Metz also co-founded the Kids Who Care service club. The student organization provides children with an opportunity to be involved at school and in the community. Metz also established a subprogram called Barracuda Buddies that pairs general-education and ESE students together to participate in classroom activities.
Maribel Lopez | Timber Springs Middle Maribel Lopez is a Visual Art teacher at Timber Springs Middle who empowers her students with positivity and fosters the spirit of the arts as an out-of-the-box thinker. She knew teaching would be her profession after witnessing how her kindergarten teacher made a difference in students’ lives. Lopez continues that tradition by inspiring her students to grow their talents. She also instructs art classes with a student-centered approach to learning and focuses on the growth mindset. Lopez is committed to advancing Timber Springs’ art program with collaborative and interactive applications for increasing learning engagement of all students. An example includes her overseeing and providing guidance for the National Junior Art Honor Society’s vibrant wall mural, which features six flowing colors and 11 silhouettes representing the middle schoolers’ scholastic path to graduation. Her students also have displayed their artwork at community events, including the Global Peace Film Festival’s Student Peace Art Exhibit, Orlando Museum of Art’s student exhibition and Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival.

Congratulations Assistant Principal of the Year Finalists
Kenya Nelson-Warren | Evans High Kenya Nelson-Warren is renowned as an outstanding leader throughout OCPS. Her professional path began as an English Language Arts teacher who embraced equity and access in her classroom at Evans High 25 years ago. Her achievements include receiving her school’s Teacher of the Year Award in 2005 and Assistant Principal of the Year Award in 2021. Nelson-Warren also helped Evans High become a "B-rated" school in 2012. As an administrator, she spread her wings as an assistant principal at other high schools in the district before returning to Evans High in 2018. Nelson-Warren helped resolve disciplinary issues by implementing social-emotional learning strategies. Her action plan made a positive impact on students, resulting in a 59% decrease in out-of-school suspensions and 60% reduction in assigned in-school suspension days.
Tabitha L. Brown | Phillis Wheatley Elementary Tabitha L. Brown is a visionary leader who is committed to Phillis Wheatley Elementary’s students and teachers. During her tenure, she has overcome obstacles and worked diligently to assist educators with developing a culture of data-driven instructional strategies and effective planning for closing the achievement gap after joining the school in November 2018. Brown’s other focuses include student learning and differentiated instruction, especially in reading. She also encourages teachers to instruct students with targeted interventions in small groups. Brown and her team’s hard work paid off by improving the school’s Florida Standards Assessments testing scores, increasing math proficiency to 65% and English Language Arts learning gains to 55%. She provides reading instruction to fourth- and fifth-grade scholars, teaches dance to underprivileged girls after school and empowers educators in the Level Up leadership program.
Autherene Opal Leighvard | Pinewood Elementary For nearly 20 years, Autherene Opal Leighvard has championed passionately for OCPS students and fellow educators. She is a dedicated leader who supports social-emotional health and safety, creates a positiveclassroom culture and equips students and teachers with the tools they need for academic success. Since becoming assistant principal at Pinewood Elementary two years ago, Leighvard has enthusiastically gone the extra mile by stepping in and fulfilling additional duties to ensure school operations are running smoothly. Her efforts have included serving food in the cafeteria; disposing of trash on the recess field; mopping floors; teaching classroom lesson plans; and registering students. Leighvard is a compassionate changemaker and collaborator who exemplifies positivity; is adaptable; motivates students to learn; and continuously strives to help faculty, students and staff shine.

Julie A. Helton | Castleview Elementary Julie A. Helton is an adaptive, approachable and authentic leader who has been guiding elementary and secondary students toward achieving academic success for more than 20 years. Her accomplishments include receiving the Orange County Association of School Administrators High School Assistant Principal of the Year Award in 2013 and Orange County School Counseling Elementary Administrator of the Year Award in 2016. She assembled a team of six aspiring educational leaders at Castleview Elementary to review iReady and Florida Standards Assessments data and develop learning strategies that would prepare students for statewide assessments. Perseverance paid off with the 2021 FSA test-score data showing that 75% of the students achieved proficiency in math and reading, and 74% were competent in science. Overall, Castleview was in the top 10% of OCPS elementary schools that made progress in science learning. Previously, an OCPS district-level administrator, she managed a $6 million Title III grant that provided English Language Arts students with supplemental-education services. Helton also helped East River High and Winegard Elementary become "A-rated" schools during her tenure.
Martha C. Chang | Lake Nona High Longtime Florida educator Martha C. Chang is passionate about leading students to success. As Lake Nona High’s principal, she is committed to increasing academic achievements, student safety and school pride. One of Chang’s main focuses is providing students with a rigorous curriculum that challenges students academically in the classroom. She also increased career and technical education opportunities for her students by creating course offerings in horticulture, photography and law enforcement fields. She helped Lake Nona High earn an "A" with the largest point increase of all secondary schools within OCPS during her second year as principal. Chang inspires students to pursue their dreams and have an academic or career plan before they graduate from high school. She also encourages teachers to be their best in the classroom and mentors future educational leaders.
Lukeshia J. Miller | Phillis Wheatley Elementary Lukeshia J. Miller fell in love with teaching others when she was a second grader, and that sentiment continues today. Shaping the lives of children, teachers and community members also has been her mission since she became an OCPS educator 21 years ago. Raising Phillis Wheatley Elementary’s Florida Standards Assessments test scores was one of Miller’s main goals when she became the school’s principal two years ago. She and her team succeeded by increasing the students’ math proficiency to 65% and English Language Arts learning gains to 55%. Before arriving at Phillis Wheatley, she worked with Rolling Hills Elementary teachers and students to increase the school grade from a "C" to an "A" during her first year as principal. As a principal at Apopka Elementary, Miller and her fellow educators helped the school achieve a "B" for three consecutive years and increase science proficiency by more than 60%. She also was recognized by Gov. Rick Scott for improving mathematics achievement during the 2015-16 and 2016-17 academic years.

Davina Chunoo | Gotha Middle Creating meaningful experiences for Gotha Middle students, staff and teachers has been Davina Chunoo’s mission for the past seven years. She also embraces the Daymaker movement by performing intentional acts of kindness and making the school a better place. In her role as secretary, Chunoo has continuously encouraged students to create moments of positivity for themselves and others, and expressed gratitude and appreciation toward staff members. She has been recognized for her unwavering support by receiving the school’s Parent Teacher Organization President Award. Chunoo also provides students with an opportunity to advocate for themselves and experience policymaking firsthand as a student government advisor. Thanks to her assistance, Gotha Middle students had a chance to observe a high school student policy presented during a Senate session at the Florida State Capitol in Tallahassee. The event inspired one of the attendees to apply and be accepted into the State of Florida’s House Page and Messenger Program after watching the government in action.
Rosemary Carsello | Lake Buena Vista High School Secretary Rosemary Carsello’s indomitable spirit, professional demeanor, commitment to excellence and stellar customer service has won her the admiration and praise of parents, staff and district personnel. Her role at Lake Buena Vista High provides her with an opportunity to grow on personal and professional levels and keeps her cognizant of community dynamics. Carsello was designated by the chief of high schools as the point of contact for guidance and support for school secretaries throughout the district. As the school secretary at Olympia High, she ensured that the clerical staff was trained on Skyward, OCPS’ student information system, by developing cross-training and enhancement workshops before it launched online. Carsello, who has worked for OCPS for more than 10 years, is extremely supportive of her colleagues and always has their best interests in mind. She also is caring, helpful and goes above and beyond to assist parents and students.
Kelly Pfeiffer | Maitland Middle Whether it is comforting a sick child, treating an injury, having a breakthrough moment with a student or being a voice to those who otherwise feel unheard, Maitland Middle’s school nurse, Kelly Pfeiffer, strives to make a positive difference. Pfeiffer, who has worked at Maitland Middle for the past five years, is devoted to her students and nursing role on campus. She ensures district health initiatives are met and medical concerns do not affect student success. Her accolades include the Support Person of the Year and COVID Queen awards in 2021, and school SOAR Awards, adopted by other school districts in 2020 and 2021. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Pfeiffer created a document that tracked positive cases, exposures in the classroom, home and other places and quarantined students. The COVID-19 data tracking provided staff and teachers with a wealth of information, kept the campus safe and gave Pfeiffer more time to take care of her students.
Jessica Perez | Phillis Wheatley Elementary For more than a quarter century, Secretary and Bookkeeper Jessica Perez has been serving Phillis Wheatley Elementary students, staff and teachers with care. She has made a lasting impact in the hearts and lives of numerous elementary school students and employees, and received the Employee of the Year Award during the 2016-2017 and 2020-2021 academic school years. Perez enjoys helping others and influences them with her eagerness to solve any problem; inner light; positive energy; warm personality; professional demeanor; and compassion coupled with love. Her kindness and sincerity prompted an applicant to select a role at Phillis Wheatley Elementary over other school positions. Perez also is working toward becoming a certified chaplain and offering emotional and spiritual care in a clinical setting. Her future role will provide her with an opportunity to visit children in a hospital setting and provide them with hope and emotional support.
Joy Hamilton | SunRidge Middle SunRidge Middle’s Exceptional Student Education Program Assistant Joy Hamilton is a compassionate advocate who provides her students with endless support. Her calling and educational journey began when she was a youth counselor during the YMCA after-school program at Sunset Park Elementary more than 10 years ago. Hamilton enjoyed counseling, assisting students with their homework and nurturing children’s social skills, which led to her current OCPS position. Hamilton is her students’ biggest cheerleader, and she helps them find their voice and value in society. Her exemplary leadership came into play when she helped an eighth grader who had disciplinary issues and was not sure if he was going to finish middle school. The student passed successfully, thanks to Hamilton’s assistance and guidance with his coursework. Hamilton is taking courses at Valencia College and working toward obtaining her director credential certificate from the Florida Department of Children and Families.
